Vaughan Road Academy has established an excellent reputation for providing students with opportunities to acquire skills and knowledge in a safe and positive learning environment. Our balanced academic curriculum includes programs in the arts, business, the pure and applied sciences, mathematics, communications, the social sciences, cooperative education, health and physical education. We emphasize research and study skills, as well as critical thinking skills. Our standards are high. We have clear and well-articulated expectations of our students in the area of attendance, performance, and achievement. School uniforms, the Empowered Student Partnerships (ESP) Safe Schools Program, student leadership programs and supports, a student/parent/school contract, and community service are important features of our school program. Our mission statement and fundamental principles clearly outline our commitment to our students, their families, and to the community. We have a number of unique programs at Vaughan Road Academy. The INTERACT program is a unique program for students who have heavy outside commitments in dance, theatre, music, or athletics. Students in the Interact Program have the same team of teachers during their high school experience. Individual, flexible timetables are created to accomodate the students' outside schedules. The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is a rigorous pre-university course of study for highly motivated secondary school students and is offered in the last two years of high school. The Pre-IB program is offered to selected students in grades 9-10, in preparation for the IB diploma program in grades 11 and 12. ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Pre-IB and International Baccalaureate Diploma Program INTERACT Program for students whose involvement in dance, theatre, music, and athletics requires a flexible timetable Cooperative Education: students earn World of Work credits Empowered Student Partnerships (ESP) Safe Schools Program A variety of student leadership initiatives, extra-curricular programs, clubs and teams in the arts, athletics and academics. $ 706 % Total number of students: Gender: Female Male 361 345 51% 49% ♦ Primary language other than English: 282 40%* ♦ Students born outside of Canada: Students living in Canada for 2 years or less Students living in Canada for 3 - 5 years 37 63 5% 9% ♦ +' " Howard Goodman (416) 395-8403 ' Jeffrey Hainbuch (416) 394-3041 !!"# ♦ * Calculation does not include students for whom language information is missing. These assessments are based on clear expectations for all learners, consistent with those described in The Ontario Curriculum. The primary purpose of student assessment is to improve learning. Assessment has the greatest potential to improve learning when it is an integral part of classroom activities. Teachers assess student progress towards achieving the expectations on an ongoing basis by using strategies such as projects, class presentations, homework assignments, classroom observations, portfolios of student work, and tests. Schools use assessment information and information from other sources to make informed decisions for school improvement planning. Schools identify areas of strength as well as areas that require improvement. Input is obtained from a variety of sources such as student assessments, teacher feedback, parent feedback, and community surveys. In this way, schools monitor, celebrate and improve their efforts in providing a supportive and challenging learning environment for all their students. + , % ,8 , 9 School/Community Clean-up Day in local parklands University and College Visits Arts/Music nights International Trips & Leadership Camping Weekends International Reading Festival Competitive Sports Teams & "Fun In Athletics" Program School Clubs: ESP, Math, Model UN/Parliament, Art & Design, Debate, etc Career Fair Math & Science, Computer Contests and French Speaking Competitions Submission to Urban Voices Poetry Anthology Holiday Basket and Coin Drive School Newspaper and Yearbook Student Leadership Programs Student Tutoring Programs Peer Mediation Program Vaughan Road Academy School Year: 2009-2010 33,9 % % ' )). ,**) % ,**)0 ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ Parent-Teacher Interviews.
