Board authorizes new budget Child Nutrition goes online
It’s been a year filled with tough
decisions for the Bethel school
Board. But, after months of hard
work, a new operating budget is
finally in place.
In a 3-2 decision this month,
the board approved a budget that
makes significant reductions in
staff for the 2011/12 school year.
The changes were needed to
offset major funding reductions
at the state level, including the
elimination of monies to reduce
class size, I-728 (student achievement funds) and I-732 (cost of
living adjustments).
Throughout the budgeting
process, the Board has strived to
preserve educational programs
and services.
Over $7 million was reduced
from this year’s budget. Cuts include reductions to department
and school budgets, eliminations
of several classified, teaching and
administrative staff positions,
and a one-year closure of Clover
Creek. The purchase of new science curriculum and technology
were also placed on hold.
Starting this school year, families can submit their application
for free and reduced priced meals
online. The online application is
available at https://emealapps.
bethelsd.org and in the Child
Nutrition Services section of the
district website. Printed copies
are also available for families
without Internet access. For more
information, call Child Nutrition
at (253) 683-6912.
Next month, CNS will offer a
special meal to celebrate “Taste
of Washington Day.” On Sept.
29, Child Nutrition Services will
serve a menu of items grown in
our state. The menu includes:
Glazed Chicken Drumsticks, Herb
Roasted Potatoes, Whole Wheat
Rolls, Washington Grown Fruit
and Vegetable Bar, Caramel Apple
Crisp, and Dairy Fresh Farm Milk.
Nutrition education activities
for students will provide information about where this meal was
grown. For more information
about farm-to-school programs,

Summer learning helps keep kids focussed
Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools Jennifer Bethman assists a student during a help session for the Summer Math Experience.
Never stop learning. That’s the
goal of this year’s summer enrichment programs.
Research shows students can
lose up to three months of learning during summer break. So this
year, the district challenged secondary students to participate in
a summer math experience and
reading program.
For seven weeks, students
were invited to download or
pick-up math packets for Math
70, Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 at
the Educational Services Center.
Help sessions were offered to
keep kids on track.
Hundreds of students participated in the program. Packets
will be used to determine math
placement when classes resume
next month.
Beyond the summer math experience, all students in grades 7
through 12 were required to read
a novel selected for their specific
grade level. All secondary stu-
dents will be assessed on their
assigned summer reading
book in the fall.

IN BRIEF
GK wins math awards
It’s all in the numbers for Graham-Kapowsin High School. This
summer, GK senior Sean Phenisee placed third
at the Richard E.
Lomax National
TrigStar Awards.
The win follows
back-to-back
Sean Phenisee titles at the state
and school level.
Altogether, Phenisee has earned
about $1,600 in the TrigStar contest.
At the national event, GK teacher David Andersen also received
a Teaching Excellence Award and
$250 prize.
TrigStar is an annual high
school mathematics competition sponsored by the National
Society of Professional Surveyors
that focuses on the practical applications of Trigonometry.
New Comcast program
Local holiday charity needs community help
A beacon of holiday help may
be fading. Without more community support, the Spanawaybased ‘Mom & Pop Shop’ could
close its doors for good.
Local volunteer Donna Saling
has been operating the program to support needy families
since 2007. Each year, she pulls
together thousands of donated
items for children throughout
the Bethel community. Then, just
a few days before Christmas, the
‘shop’ opens so families can make
the holidays a little brighter for
their kids.
In the past, the program has
been supported through a combination of grants and community donations. But as economic
times have gotten tougher, it has
been increasingly difficult to keep
up with the needs of so many
families.
”Our grants are down. We have
never had so little to operate on,”
said Sailing. “We are also not getting support from the National
Guard this year. They have provided a huge amount of toys in
the past.”
The ‘Mom & Pop Shop’ supports about 500 kids, but right
now there are only enough supplies for 30 to 50 children. So,
Saling is turning to businesses,
community members, clubs and
churches for assistance. The shop
is especially in need of plush toys,
books, electronics and stuff for
teens.
“Anyone who could do a toy
drive for us would be a tremendous help,” said Sailing.

O
nce again, district
students and staff
have outdone themselves
and have brought Pride to
our community.
Liberty Jr. fights cancer. Students and staff joined pro athletes earlier this year for a 5K walk to benefit the Ben Towne
Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation. The school raised several hundred dollars for the charity. For more details on
the foundation, visit www.bentownefoundation.org.
Cougar Mountain Jr. High athletes were the recipients of this year’s Tingstad Award. The award is given for
outstanding athletic and academic success. Teams earn points based on their final standings. One half of the
award is based on athletic success. The other half is based on academic success. Grade point averages are calculated for each school’s student athletes. Pictured with the Tingstad Award are Cougar Mountain’s athletes
of the year Madison Rimestad, Blake Schwartz and Max Karyavyy. Photo courtesy of Lori Chambers.
Energy Education Manager Michael Knaack displays a hand-truck
full of honors for energy conservation, given out by the U.S. Department of Energy. Eighteen Bethel area schools recently received
ENERGY STAR plaques. Ten Bethel schools scored 90% or above on
the ENERGY STAR test and the district averages about 79%, overall.
Kudos for a job well done. The Lakewood Kmart recently named the district’s Transition LAB students their employees of the quarter. Store staff went all out to thank the students
and their job coach, Mike Doiron, for all of their hard work. Kmart manager Hritie Haile and her staff served up pizza and cake to show their appreciation. Photo by TerriLea Parsons.

The program is open to any
Pierce County student in grades

Central Pierce Fire and Rescue
staff tested their skills during a
mock exercise at Clover Creek
Elementary School.
Over a two-day period, crews
practiced ventilations and rescue
missions on the site.
The exercise started on the
roof, then moved to smoke-filled
classrooms as crews searched for
possible victims.
“This is something that we only
get an opportunity to do maybe
once every five years,” said Assistant Chief Bryan Pearson. “It’s
huge for us. We just don’t get to do
this very often.”
Construction crews are in the
process of demolishing Clover
Creek. A replacement school will
open in September 2012.
