Science + Tech Workshop Series for K-5 Educators A Walk Down Sensory Lane Join KQED this summer for a K-5 educator series on integrating outdoor learning, technology and using our senses to help inform us about our world. Explore ways to engage students more deeply to connect with nature in their own local place. SMELLSCAPES science + tech trainings for grades k-5 educators Join KQED Education and San Francisco Botanical Garden for an olfactory experience. Explore the science of smell in nature. Take a smell walk and discover the fragrant world of botanicals. Capture the smells and map it. Yes, a smell map! day one I MEDIA & TECH JULY 8 mon @ KQED (2601 Mariposa St, SF) 9 to noon 10 wed @ SF Botanical Gardens 9 to noon 12 INFORMATION REGISTER @ www.tinyurl.com/ sensorywalk Participants are eligible for a stipend. Tune in to ‘The Sweet Smell of Science’ and other media stories from PBS and KQED to inspire learning. Take a walk through the SF Botanical Gardens with a guest naturalist and learn about the smells in our natural world. Are insects attracted to certain fragrances? Which parts of the flower are more fragrant? Let our nose guide our discoveries. Use a simple mapping tool to embed smell information & photos. Learn to create a smell map and identify the smelliest and most fragrant parts of your schoolyard! 3 The Science Lab is generously supported by The Verizon Foundation and The Isabel Allende Foundation. SOUNDSCAPES science + tech trainings for grades 2-5 educators How can listening to soundscapes help us better understand our ecosystem? Join KQED Education and a guest field naturalist for an acoustical exploration. Discover the sounds of the natural world, gather audio, and learn to map sound data. day one I MEDIA & TECH JULY JULY INFORMATION 17 wed 22 mon @ KQED (2601 Mariposa St., SF) 9 to noon @ Contra Costa County Office of Ed 9 to noon **www.tinyurl.com/ sensorywalk 18 thur 23 tue @ Golden Gate Park 9 to noon Mt. Learn to use a recording device to capture sounds and use as data for a sound investigation. Take a sonic walk outdoors with a guest field naturalist. Use a simple mapping tool to embed recorded audio files and/or photos. Record the sounds and learn about the acoustical environment. By creating a sound map, students develop a sense of place and can hear the sounds of a location. 2 The Science Lab is generously supported by The Verizon Foundation and The Isabel Allende Foundation. PHOTOSCAPES science + tech trainings for grades k-5 educators AUGUST Join KQED and a guest naturalist in search of geometric designs and patterns in our natural world. Start to see fractals, spirals, and spheres everywhere and see the world with a new lens. Snap a collection of photos and turn it into a useful teaching tool with slideshows. Thursday @ Golden Gate Park from 9 to noon day one I MEDIA & TECH 5 Monday @ KQED 9 to noon 8 9 INFORMATION REGISTER @ www.tinyurl.com/ sensorywalk Participants are eligible for a stipend. Use your own camera or learn to use an iPod Touch. Upload your photos and explore editing images using Pixlr. Meet at an outdoor location and walk with a guest scientist in search of different types of geometric patterns in nature. Snap your own collection of photos as a way to document observations and use as evidence to explore science concepts. Create a slideshow of your collection by using quick & easy slideshow programs, as well as iMovie. Use your slideshow as a teaching tool and show students how to create one for their own multimedia project. 4 The Science Lab is generously supported by The Verizon Foundation and The Isabel Allende Foundation.
