Wi-Fi hot spots and a casual atmosphere make the Hat Rack a comfortable (and popular) place to dine. This lively spot has gourmet coffee and other great options to drop in for a snack or a hearty meal. The Commons Cafeteria The Commons is Stetson’s main dining location. It offers students a wide variety of selections for meals in an “all you care to eat” environment. There are several different stations, including a grill area, a fresh salad bar and a deli with made-to-order sandwiches. The menus at the Commons change throughout the week and can be viewed online at stetson.edu/dining-services. Coffeehouse/Outtakes Convenience Store The Stetson Coffeehouse offers a central location, great ambience, comfortable furniture, books, games, TVs, great snacks and Starbucks coffee. Students like the Coffeehouse’s late hours, and everyone enjoys hanging out and relaxing with friends. For people short on time, the nearby Outtakes convenience store has a wide selection of snacks, beverages and personal products. Stetson competes at the highest level: in Division I of the NCAA and as a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference. Stetson has 18 intercollegiate sports. The university also offers Club Sports and Intramural Sports to promote and develop the athletic interests and skills of students. Stetson boasts many top-notch fields and facilities on and off campus, including: Edmunds Center, home to Hatter Basketball and Volleyball; the Softball complex Patricia Wilson Field; the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center; Soccer and Lacrosse fields; a training center for SU’s Rowing Team on Lake Beresford; Melching Field at Conrad Park, home of Stetson Baseball; and Hatter Football at Spec Martin Memorial Stadium. For schedules or tickets, go to gohatters.com. 12 duPont-Ball Library The duPont-Ball Library, the oldest federal depository in Florida, was built in 1964 and was extensively renovated in 1999. It houses more than 330,000 books and bound periodicals, with approximately 245,000 federal documents in paper format. The library offers a large number of computers and more than 100 databases to help students with their research. 7 Visit stetson.edu/maps Elizabeth Hall Elizabeth Hall is the most easily recognizable building on the university’s campus with its iconic crownlike white cupola on top, patterned after Independence Hall in Philadelphia. The building accommodates numerous academic departments, including Mathematics, Computer Science, and Communications Studies. It is also home to the Lee Chapel and the Beckerath organ. 54 Gillespie Museum The Gillespie Museum, Stetson’s Earth-science museum, has a collection of 20,000 mineral, rock and fossil specimens — one of the oldest and largest in the Southeast — and has developed over the past 50 years into a center for environmental education. (See Rinker Environmental Learning Center.) 11 Hand Art Center The Homer and Dolly Hand Art Center, on the Palm Court (Quad) features two galleries: one to exhibit selections from Stetson’s extensive collection of art by American Modernist artist Oscar Bluemner (1867-1938) and the other to display works from the university’s permanent collection or for special shows by the Stetson community. 61 Hollis Center The Hollis Center features a fitness/cardio room, solar-heated swimming pool, student lounge area, dance studio, game room and meeting rooms/classrooms. The center is also home to the Wellness and Recreation Department and Rinker Field House, which has an NCAA-sized basketball court and spectator seating. 15 Lynn Business Center The Eugene M. and Christine Lynn Business Center is Stetson University’s and Florida’s first LEED-certified building. The School of Business Administration building features state-of-the-art technology, a 144-seat auditorium and the groundbreaking Roland George Investments Program. Student-directed, this investments program is one of the nation’s first and largest in terms of real dollars under management. 72 Meadows Alumni House Honoring alumnus Gary A. Meadows, the Meadows Alumni House is a welcome center where Stetson alumni and community gather for formal and informal seminars, receptions and meetings. 8 9 Presser/McMahan Halls As one of the finest undergraduate music schools in the country, students are educated by artist faculty, using cutting-edge music technology that provides firstclass performing opportunities in symphony orchestra, band, choirs, opera, musical theater, jazz, chamber music and solo. Around Around Founded in 1876 by Henry DeLand, the city is proud of its heritage, rich history and culture. With a population of 27,000, DeLand is a thriving college town offering visitors many possibilities and the hospitality only an intimate Southern city can provide. Located only 25 minutes from Daytona Beach and about 40 minutes from Orlando, DeLand is central to numerous attractions. There are many other beaches along the east coast from Flagler and Ormond Beach to New Smyrna Beach that all ages can enjoy. Approximately one hour north of DeLand, spend the day in the nation’s oldest city in St. Augustine. Or, travel one hour south and find Disney, Universal Studios, SeaWorld and Kennedy Space Center. For the shopper, take a look around at one of the area’s several outlet malls. DELAND The vibrant downtown community features myriad choices in shopping and entertainment throughout the year, including special events and festivals. It is brimming with artisan shops, boutiques and restaurants suited for all tastes and budgets. The historic Athens Theatre is a popular destination for special shows and art-house film showings. At the airport, the internationally famous Skydive DeLand offers instruction and the experience of a lifetime for those seeking a bird’s-eye view; it’s also a great place for spectators to visit. DeLand has something for everyone. 13 Rinker Environmental Learning Center The RELC is a space constructed to complement the Earth- and environmentalscience mission of the Gillespie Museum. The space is used by local students, environmental groups and Stetson students for presentations, demonstrations, meetings, lectures, workshops and special events. Located behind the RELC is the student- and community-involved “Hatter Harvest” garden. 17 45 Residence Halls Stetson offers 13 residence halls, nine fraternity and sorority houses, and two apartment complexes. There is a wide selection of housing options to fit the needs of any student, whether they are coming in for their first year or finishing up their senior year. Students typically begin living with a roommate using a communitystyle bathroom, but as they earn more credits, there are more opportunities for independent-style options, such as suite style and apartment living. The residential experience is enhanced through many special-interest and living-learning community options, including the Wellness House, the First-Year Experience, the Women’s Leadership Community and the Honors House. We also offer genderneutral and pet-friendly housing for our residents. More information about the living options can be found at stetson.edu/housing. 5 Sage Science Center Sage Science Center is home to Stetson’s Biology, Chemistry and Physics departments. The building was recently renovated to include exhibition spaces for undergraduate research, larger laboratory study areas and state-of-the-art technology. 10 Sampson Hall Built in 1908, Sampson Hall is one of the most architecturally significant buildings on campus. Partially funded by grants from Andrew Carnegie and Elizabeth Stetson, the building includes classrooms for Art, Modern Languages and American Studies. It also houses a Language Learning Commons and student art studios. Need THE AREA DIRECTIONS? Even closer to Stetson are parks that offer camping, picnicking, swimming, scuba diving and canoeing, such as Hontoon Island and the Manatee Refuge in Blue Spring State Park. There is also The Old Spanish Sugar Mill, located at DeLeon Springs State Park, where you can griddle your own gourmet pancakes. Throughout the parks, you’ll see an abundance of wildlife and bald cypress swamps on the St. Johns River.
