Marcus Mariota’s
“electric debut”
probably a sign
of things to come

One quarterback comes off a superb opener,
the other off a mediocre performance.
The switch heading into Thursday night’s
Broncos-Chiefs matchup in Kansas City is that
the Chiefs’ Alex Smith had the big game, and
Denver’s Peyton Manning struggled.
The Chiefs manhandled the Texans in
Houston with Smith going 22 of 33 for 243 yards
and three touchdowns in the first half. His passer
rating against J.J. Watt and company was an outstanding 118.6.
In the Broncos’ 19-13 home victory against
Baltimore, Manning was 24 for 40 for a meager
175 yards and no touchdowns with one interception and a 59.9 rating.
“I’m sure offensively I speak for a lot of guys
that we certainly want to play better. I feel like
that Thursday probably couldn’t come soon
enough,” Manning said.
Nor could it come quickly enough for the
Chiefs, who are eager to build off their impressive start by further establishing their credentials against Denver (No. 3, AP Pro32). The
Chiefs (No. 9, AP Pro32) are 3-point favorites,
yet another change to recent trends in this AFC
West series, which dates back to the AFL when
the Chiefs were the Dallas Texans.
“I think for us the one thing is win the division,” Smith said. “That’s the focus, right? ...
We’ve got a chance against the division champions at our place, so it starts with this week.”
Indeed it does.
CHIEFS, 24-23
KNOCKOUT LEAGUE TIP:
Green Bay survived last week at Chicago.
This week’s choice to win outright — remember,
no repeat picks in a knockout pool — is
INDIANAPOLIS.
No. 18 Atlanta (plus 2) at No. 22 New York
Giants
Tom Coughlin, Eli Manning and Ben McAdoo
won’t have brain freeze at the end of this one.
BEST BET: GIANTS, 27-20
No. 26 Houston (plus 3) at No. 16 Carolina
On the theory that the Texans will be better
prepared and far sharper and intense than last
week.
UPSET SPECIAL: Texans, 19-17
No. 21 New York Jets (plus 7) at No. 14 Indianapolis, Monday After that stinker in Buffalo, the
Colts will be ready for their home opener.
COLTS, 26-16
No. 5 Seattle (plus 3 1-2) at No. 2 Green Bay
Hard to believe the Seahawks will start 0-2.
Then again, the Packers owe them big time for
NFC title game.
PACKERS, 24-17
No. 1 New England (pick ‘em) at No. 8 Buffalo
Anytime you get the Patriots not giving points,
jump on it, even against Rex’s strong defense.
PATRIOTS, 21-17
No. 4 Dallas (plus 5) at No. 17 Philadelphia
Eagles probably should have won last week
and Cowboys probably should have lost. Does
that make this justice?
EAGLES, 30-27
(Continued on page B4)
Nice start, Marcus Mariota. Good luck in that encore on
Sunday against Cleveland.
History says you might need it, at least this week.
Mariota’s electric debut against NFL draft classmate Jameis
Winston looked a little like Manning vs. Leaf 2.0, with Mariota
confidently flicking four touchdown passes while posting a nota-typo 158.3 passer rating, the NFL quarterback’s version of a
perfect game.
Statistically, there’s nowhere to go but down. Just how far
down? Well, Mariota hopes not too far.
“I mean I just got to continue to play my game and focus on
what I have to take care of,” he said.
Mariota is probably talking about the Titans, but just in case he
was also taking your fantasy team into consideration, no offense
Marcus, but savvy owners will probably stick you back on the
bench for a bit, though probably only for a bit.
Reality tends to come quickly for quarterbacks who turn their
first four quarters in the NFL into something out of a Madden
video game.
Courtesy of STATS, a look at some of the top opening week
rookie performances in league history, what happened in Week 2
and beyond:
FRAN TARKENTON
Week 1: A scrambling quarterback before being a scrambling
quarterback was cool, Tarkenton was a fresh-faced 21-year-old
when he entered the first game in Minnesota Vikings history on
Sept. 17, 1961, against the Chicago Bears. Tarkenton threw for
250 yards and four touchdowns and ran for another score in a
37-13 win.
Week 2: Nightmarish. The Dallas Cowboys picked off
Tarkenton twice and held him to 8 of 24 passing for 117 measly
yards in a 21-7 Minnesota loss.
It got better, right? It did. Eventually.
The Vikings went 2-8 in Tarkenton’s 10 starts in 1961, though
it was the beginning of a Hall of Fame career that saw Tarkenton
lead Minnesota to three Super Bowls (all losses) and retire as the
league’s all-time leader in passing attempts, completions, yards
and touchdowns. Hey, that’s incredible. Or so we hear.
JIM KELLY
Week 1: Kelly was a “rookie” in name only when he arrived in
Buffalo in 1986 after the Donald Trump-led USFL shuttered. He
torched the New York Jets for 292 yards and three touchdowns. The
Bills lost 28-24, but Kelly’s performance served notice the sad-sack
Bills were headed back toward respectability after years adrift.
Week 2: On the road in Cincinnati against a pretty good Bengals team, Kelly hit 13 of 22 for 228 yards with a score and two
picks, and Buffalo fell in overtime.
It got better, right? Way better.
The Bills went 4-12 in 1986, with seven of the losses coming
by seven points or fewer. Two years later Buffalo was rolling
behind the “K-Gun” offense and the Bills were playoff fixtures
on their way to becoming perennial Super Bowl runners-up. Like
Tarkenton, the lack of a Super Bowl win didn’t keep Kelly out of
the Hall of Fame.
ROGER STAUBACH
Week 1: The 1963 Heisman Trophy winner walked out of five
years of naval service and straight into the Cowboys’ huddle for
the 1969 opener against the St. Louis Cardinals (football, not baseball. Yes, there was such a thing). Staubach hit Lance Rentzel for a
75-yard score in the first quarter and finished 7 of 15 for 228 yards
while adding a touchdown on the ground in a 24-3 win.

over the Astros. Texas has 5 HRs in 14-3 win
over Astros, stretch West lead
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Prince Fielder
hit two of Texas’ season-high five homers
and drove in five runs in the AL West-leading
Rangers’ 14-3 victory over the Houston Astros
on Wednesday night. After taking over first place
with a 6-5 victory Tuesday night, Texas increased
its advantage over Houston to 1 1/2 games going
into the series finale Thursday night
Fielder’s RBI single in the first put the
Rangers ahead to stay. The slugger pulled both
of his homers into the second deck in right field,
leading off the third and then capping an 11-pitch
at-bat in the sixth with a three-run shot that made
it 12-1. Mike Napoli, Rougned Odor and Bobby
Wilson also homered to help Texas win its third
straight game in the series.
Martin Perez (3-5) gave up one run over seven
innings while allowing 10 base runners — nine
hits and a walk. The left-hander struck out three.
Dallas Keuchel (17-8) was the loser.
BLUE JAYS 9, BRAVES 1
ATLANTA (AP) — David Price allowed one
run in seven innings, Russell Martin hit a homer
and drove in four runs, and Toronto beat Shelby
Miller and Atlanta to protect its AL East lead.
Price (16-5) gave up six hits and had nine
strikeouts. He improved to 7-1 since coming to
Toronto in a trade with Detroit, and lowered his
ERA to 2.42. The Blue Jays stayed three games
ahead of second-place New York.
Toronto had 12 hits as it returned to its customary high-scoring pace after managing only a
combined two runs in two straight losses. Martin
hit a two-run double in the four-run first and added
a two-run homer off Ryan Kelly in the ninth.
Miller (5-15) didn’t make it through the fourth
inning. He is winless in 22 straight starts, the longest streak for any pitcher in a season he was an
All-Star. The right-hander has lost 14 consecutive decisions since his last win on May 17.
YANKEES 3, RAYS 1
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Prized
rookie Luis Severino rebounded from his worst
start, Greg Bird homered and drove in two runs,
and New York beat Tampa Bay.
Severino (4-3) allowed one run and six hits in
5 2-3 innings. The right-hander gave up a careerhigh six earned runs over 2 1-3 innings in an 11-5
loss Friday to Toronto.
After Bird had a second-inning RBI double,
Chase Headley put the Yankees up 2-0 with a
run-scoring single in the sixth. Bird, also a rookie,
made it 3-1 on his ninth-inning shot.
Justin Wilson, Dellin Betances and Andrew
Miller, who pitched the ninth for his 34th save,
combined for 3 1-3 scoreless innings for New
York. Chris Archer (12-12) was the loser.
CUBS 3, PIRATES 2, 12 INNINGS
PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pinch-runner Quintin
Berry raced home on Anthony Rizzo’s sacrifice
fly in the top of the 12th inning, and Chicago
slipped by Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh rallied to tie it in the eighth against
Jake Arrieta, spoiling his bid to become the first
20-game winner this season. Arrieta allowed two
runs, one earned, and six hits, but failed to pick
up a win for the first time since Aug. 4.
Chris Denorfia singled off Vance Worley (4-6)
to start the 12th, and was replaced by Berry, who
advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on
Austin Jackson’s single. Starling Marte tracked
down Rizzo’s sinking liner to left field but had no
shot at Berry. Hector Rondon (6-4) worked two
innings to help Chicago pull within three games of
the Pirates for the top spot in the NL wild-card race.
MARLINS 6, METS 0
NEW YORK (AP) — Adam Conley slowed
New York’s pursuit of the National League East
title with a career-high seven innings for streaking
Miami. Facing a makeshift lineup of all righthanders, Conley (4-1) allowed three hits and struck
out six as Miami beat New York for a second
straight night to secure its fifth straight series win
— matching a franchise record set in 2003 for
most consecutive series won in one season.
Martin Prado and J.T. Realmuto homered off
Bartolo Colon (14-12).New York’s lead over
Washington was cut to 7 1/2 games.
NATIONALS 12, PHILLIES 2
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jayson Werth hit
two homers, Bryce Harper also went deep and
Gio Gonzalez tied his career high with 12 strikeouts in Washington’s victory over Philadelphia.
Werth and Harper each had four home runs
in the three-game sweep that extended the
Nationals’ winning streak to four. Gonzalez
(11-7) allowed two runs on five hits with a pair
of walks in seven innings. Darin Ruf homered for
Philadelphia. The Phillies have dropped seven of
10. Alec Asher (0-4) was tagged for four runs on
seven hits in five innings.
DODGERS 2, ROCKIES 0
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Alex Wood pitched
one-hit ball for eight innings on only 78 pitches
and retired his last 19 batters, leading Los Angeles
past Colorado. Wood (10-11) struck out five and
walked none in the game tha took just 2 hours,
8 minutes. Kyle Parker’s clean two-out single to
right-center field in the second was the only hit
against the 24-year-old left-hander, whose only
complete game in 64 big league starts was on April
17, 2014, when he pitched eight innings in a 1-0
loss at Philadelphia while with the Atlanta Braves.

The SEC West survivor series begins.
Sure, the power of the Southeastern Conference has been overplayed, but there are still a bunch of really good teams in the western
division and they often play intense, entertaining games. Hate the
SEC if you want, but you are only spiting yourself by not enjoying it.
No. 2 Alabama tries to avenge last season’s loss at Mississippi
when the No. 15 Rebels come to Tuscaloosa on Saturday. Under
Nick Saban, the Crimson Tide has won seven of eight games against
teams that it lost to the season before — by an average of 21 points.
No. 18 Auburn gets a shot at redemption at No. 13 LSU after
dodging what would have been a historic upset. “No, it makes no difference to me whatsoever,” LSU coach Les Miles said, dismissing
last week’s Auburn struggles against FCS Jacksonville State.
Consider the SEC West a double-elimination tournament.
The winner has had one loss each of the last three seasons as the
strength of the division has spread. The losers of Saturday’s games
aren’t out, but they are likely out of mulligans.

Carroll says that Lynch’s mom
just looking out for her son
RENTON, Wash. (AP) — Pete Carroll thinks Marshawn
Lynch’s mom is just looking out for her son.
The Seattle coach brushed aside comments made by Delisa
Lynch in a Facebook post criticizing the organization and calling
for offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell to be fired. Her comments
came after her son was stopped on a fourth-and-1 run play in overtime in the Seahawks’ 34-31 loss in St. Louis on Sunday. “I heard.
I haven’t seen the actual comments,” Carroll said Wednesday.
“Mom looking after her kid, there ain’t nothing wrong with that.”
Delisa Lynch posted her comments late Monday night. Delisa
Lynch wrote that Bevell is the “worst play caller ever,” and that
the run play on fourth-and-1 against the Rams was called only to
justify the fact Seattle did not call a run play from the 1-yard line
in the Super Bowl when Russell Wilson’s pass was intercepted
by New England’s Malcolm Butler. She added that the Seahawks
staff “loves” Bevell “more than a win.”
“There is a lot of passion with our following and the 12s and
with the family members and all. ... It’s just something I’m sure
she has strong feelings and I don’t blame her for having strong
feelings. She’s a mom,” Carroll said.
After practice Wednesday, Bevell said he had not spoken with
Lynch about the comments from his mom.
Stolen Red Sox World Series
ring found during drug raid
QUINCY, Mass. (AP) — Police conducting a raid at a suspected drug dealer’s home south of Boston made an unusual discovery — a stolen 2004 Red Sox World Series ring.
Quincy police had been watching the home for several months,
and on Tuesday they executed a search warrant after witnessing
a drug deal. Capt. John Dougan says they found a “significant”
number of oxycodone pills, money-counting machines, police
scanners, $9,000 in cash and the ring.
Dougan says the ring belongs to a team employee, not a player
or coach. The Red Sox broke an 86-year World Series championship drought in 2004.
The man who lives in the home and two men to whom he allegedly sold pills are expected in court Wednesday.
Dougan says it’s unclear how the ring ended up in the home.
Sentencing reset for ex-NFL
player Sharper in Vegas sex case
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Sentencing has been reset to Dec. 17 for
former NFL star Darren Sharper in a felony Las Vegas attempted
sex assault case made part of a four-state plea agreement.
Defense attorney Richard Schonfeld said Wednesday that prosecutors didn’t oppose the delay during a Sept. 3 hearing in Clark
County District Court.
Sharper is expected to appear by video from Louisiana, where
he’s jailed after pleading guilty in June to three rape charges.
Sharper pleaded guilty in March in Las Vegas to attempted
sexual assault. A plea deal calls for the 39-year-old Sharper to be
sentenced to 38 months to eight years, but serve the Nevada time
concurrently with sentences from California, Arizona, and state
and federal courts in New Orleans.
Those sentences are expected to amount to about nine years.
High school student removed
from team after helmet incident
LINDEN, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey high school football
player who was captured on video apparently hitting an opposing
player with that player’s own helmet was removed from the team
on Wednesday while police investigate the incident.
“The brutal action taken by this young man is simply unacceptable and will not be condoned,” Linden School Superintendent
Danny Robertozzi said in a statement.
The school board is pursuing the “severest disciplinary measures permitted under law,” Robertozzi said.
However, the board said it cannot lawfully comment on the
specific disciplinary action taken.
The student’s name was not released because of his age.
Linden High School played Immaculata High School at home
on Friday night. Videotape showed the Linden defensive lineman
apparently pull the helmet off his opponent and hit the player on
the forehead with it. The Immaculata player stood up after the hit.
A referee penalized the Linden player for unsportsmanlike conduct, but did not remove him from the game.
The Immaculata player was taken to a hospital, where he
received 10 stitches for a contusion.
Robertozzi said his player’s action on the field “is contrary to
the type of sportsmanship Linden requires from its student athletes.” The school board will stress to all its athletes that such
“egregious conduct” will not be tolerated, the superintendent said.
Linden Police Capt. James Sarnicki said the police department’s juvenile bureau investigation was ongoing.
Immaculata said it received an apology from Linden school
officials. Immaculata beat Linden 26 to 6.

17 of their last 22 games. Jorge De La Rosa (9-7)
went the distance, allowing six hits over eight
innings with five strikeouts and a walk.
GIANTS 5, REDS 3
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Giants pitcher
Jake Peavy homered through the low-hovering
mist for his first long ball in more than nine years,
leading San Francisco past Cincinnati.
Peavy struck out eight in six-plus innings on
the mound and connected for his third career
home run in the fourth against reliever Collin
Balester. It was Peavy’s first since July 26, 2006,
at Dodger Stadium with the Padres.
That gave Giants pitchers nine home runs this
season, most since hitting 10 in 1934. The 1924
staff also had nine.
Peavy (7-6) won his third straight start and
fourth consecutive decision. He became the fifth
San Francisco pitcher to go deep this season,
matching a major league record. Madison
Bumgarner has five.
Ehire Adrianza had an RBI double and a runscoring triple as the Giants chased starter Michael
Lorenzen (4-9) after three innings.
Santiago Casilla retired Brandon Phillips on a
bases-loaded grounder for his 34th save.
CARDINALS 5, BREWERS 4
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Tommy Pham homered twice and tripled, Matt Carpenter added a

Pham’s two-run shots came in the second and
the fourth off Wily Peralta (5-9).
Carpenter led off the third with his 22nd home
run and 74th RBI of the season, both team highs.
Jaime Garcia (9-5) won for the third time in
his last four starts and improved to 6-1 in nine
starts since Aug. 1, helping the Cardinals go 8-1
over that span.
Trevor Rosenthal struck out the side in the

overall.
Owens (3-2) gave up six hits over 7 2-3
shutout innings. The 23-year-old lefty struck out
four, walked none and reduced his ERA from
5.25 to 4.33.
Pedroia hit a two-run drive off Mike Wright
(2-5) in the third and a three-run shot against
Jorge Rondon in the fourth to stake Boston to a
9-0 lead.
INDIANS 5, ROYALS 1
CLEVELAND (AP) — Francisco Lindor was 3 for
4 with a home run and four RBIs to lead Cleveland past Kansas City.
Lindor had a solo homer in the first for his
100th hit since being called up from the minors
June 14, added a two-run single in the second and
an RBI single in the fourth.
Danny Salazar (13-8) took a three-hit shutout
into the seventh before Mike Moustakas started
the inning with a home run. The right-hander
allowed one run and struck out six in seven
innings. Danny Duffy (7-8) allowed four runs in
2 1-3 innings for the Royals. They have dropped
nine of 12.
TIGERS 7, TWINS 4, 12 INNINGS
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Ian Kinsler’s twoout RBI single preceded a two-run homer by J.D.
Martinez in the top of the 12th inning, pushing
Detroit past Minnesota in a game delayed by rain.
Martinez’s 37th home run came off Brian
Duensing (4-1). The Twins remained 1 1/2 games
behind Houston for the second AL wild card.
Ian Krol (2-3), the ninth Tigers pitcher, got the
last nine outs for the win. He stranded the two
runners he inherited with nobody out in the 10th.
Jefry Marte had a two-run single in a fourhit ninth inning against Kevin Jepsen, his first
squandered save in eight attempts with Minnesota. Then the Twins got one back in the bottom
half on a tying double by Trevor Plouffe.
Eddie Rosario homered and had a go-ahead
RBI single in the eighth for Minnesota.
MARINERS 3, ANGELS 1
SEATTLE (AP) — Jesus Montero continued
to get the best of Los Angeles’ Jered Weaver, hitting a three-run homer to help Seattle hand the
Angels their third loss in four games.
Montero hit a line drive into the bullpen in left
field with two outs in the fourth inning. He has
five career homers and six hits overall against
Weaver (7-11).
Hisashi Iwakuma (8-4) allowed one run
and struck out a season-high nine in six strong
innings.
David Murphy homered for the second
straight game for the Angels.
PADRES 4, DIAMONDBACKS 3
PHOENIX (AP) — Matt Kemp hit a three-run
homer to back Andrew Cashner and San Diego
beat Arizona.
Cashner (6-15) allowed seven hits and three
runs, striking out six and walking two in seven
innings. He had lost 13 of his previous 17 decisions since April 24.
Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit a solo homer off
Cashner in the sixth to cut the Padres’ lead to
4-3. Craig Kimbrell got the final four outs for his
37th save.
Robbie Ray (4-12) was the loser.
CANTON, Ohio (AP) — Brett Favre is back in the news — no,
he’s not attempting another comeback.
Favre was among the 108 modern-day nominees for the Pro
Football Hall of Fame class of 2016 announced Wednesday night.
The NFL’s career leader in nearly every passing category when he
retired after the 2010 season and winner of the 1997 Super Bowl
with Green Bay, Favre leads a strong list of first-time nominees.
That group includes Terrell Owens, one of the league’s most
prolific and dynamic receivers for most of his 15 pro seasons, and
Alan Faneca, an elite blocker who made six All-Pro teams at guard
in his 13 seasons.
Other first-year-eligible nominees are safety Lawyer Milloy;
running backs Brian Westbrook and Clinton Portis; place-kicker
John Carney; and linebackers Keith Bulluck and Mike Vrabel.
Already nominated by the seniors committee are Ken Stabler and Dick Stanfel. The 2016 contributor candidate is former
49ers owner Edward DeBartolo, Jr. The nominees consist of 93
players (51 on offense, 33 on defense, 9 from special teams) and
15 coaches. They will be trimmed to 25 semifinalists in November
and, from there, to 15 finalists in January. Voting will culminate
Feb. 6, the night before the Super Bowl. While there is no set
number for any class of enshrinees, the selection process bylaws
provide that between four and eight new members will be selected.
Favre, of course, is the headliner. A three-time league MVP, he
retired with 508 touchdown passes, 71,838 yards and 186 victories. Of course, he temporarily retired twice late in his career, and
finished up with Minnesota for two seasons following 16 in Green
Bay and one with the Jets. He spent his rookie season as a backup
in Atlanta before being dealt to the Packers, where he helped revitalize the franchise.
The polarizing Owens played for five franchises, making AllPro five times. T.O. led the league in TD receptions three times,
retiring with 153, and perhaps in feuds with his quarterbacks,
many of whom he felt didn’t target him enough.
Asked about aiming for the Hall of Fame, Owens told NFL
Network: “I still don’t, never realized it, never a dream of mine,”
Owens said. “I never thought I would play beyond the collegiate
level. Everything I did playing in the NFL, I look back and marvel
at it. I am a very competitive person, once I get my mind on something, I go full-bore into it.”
Faneca anchored Pittsburgh’s offensive line for a decade, winning a Super Bowl. He also played two years for the Jets and one
for Arizona.
Finalists from 2015 who are on the ballot are place-kicker
Morten Andersen; coaches Don Coryell, Tony Dungy and Jimmy
Johnson; running back Terrell Davis; linebacker-defensive end
Kevin Greene; wide receiver Marvin Harrison; safety John Lynch;
tackle Orlando Pace; and quarterback Kurt Warner.

Timothy Bradley announces
Nov. 7 bout with Brandon Rios
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Floyd Mayweather Jr. insists he is
retired. Manny Pacquiao faces a long road back from shoulder
surgery. There is a vacancy on top of the welterweight division
this week, and Timothy Bradley is the most probably worthy candidate to fill it. A victory over Brandon Rios on Nov. 7 would
boost Bradley’s candidacy for unofficial 147-pound supremacy.
Just don’t expect the WBO champion to campaign for any honors
he can’t win in the ring.
“I don’t like to say that I feel like I’m the best welterweight in
the world,” Bradley said Wednesday in downtown Los Angeles
while announcing his next bout. “I feel like I’m one of them, but
I would like to beat all the guys in the division before I say that. I
haven’t faced everybody, but I know that I can fight these guys. I
know I can beat all the guys in the welterweight division.”
Bradley (32-1-1, 12 KOs) will defend his title against Rios at
the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas on an HBO telecast.
The undercard will be headlined by vaunted featherweight champion Vasyl Lomachenko in his sixth professional fight against
little-known Mexican featherweight Romulo Koasicha.
The main event is another chance for Bradley to show off his
combination of technical skill and scrapping instincts against Rios
(33-2-1, 24 KOs), who has never shied away from a good brawl.
Bradley has enlisted veteran trainer Teddy Atlas to prepare him
for Rios, seeking a fresh start and new information after parting
ways with longtime trainer Joel Diaz.
NYC teacher arraigned in US
Open drone-crashing incident
NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City high school science
teacher who authorities say was piloting a drone that plummeted
into empty seats and caused a scare at the U.S. Open tennis tournament has been arraigned on reckless endangerment charges.
Daniel Verley was arraigned Wednesday in the drone crash
that occurred on Sept. 4 during a women’s singles match.
According to the criminal complaint, Verley wanted to get
photos of the globe statue at Flushing Meadows Park, near the
tennis center. The drone buzzed diagonally over the court in Louis
Armstrong Stadium before plummeting into the seats during the
next-to-last game of a second-round match. No one was injured.
His attorney did not respond to a request seeking comment.
Whitecaps beat Olympia 1-0 in
CONCACAF Champions League
VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Kianz Froese
scored in the first half and the Vancouver Whitecaps beat Honduras’ Olympia 1-0 on Wednesday night in CONCACAF Champions League play.
The 19-year-old Canadian midfielder poked a shot home in
the 42nd minute that goalkeeper Noel Valladeres could only get a
piece of before it looped up and over a helpless defender.
The Whitecaps (1-0-1) moved into a tie with the Seattle
Sounders (1-1-1) atop Group F heading into their game next week
in Seatte. Olympia is 1-2-0.
Malone’s funeral on Saturday in Houston
HOUSTON (AP) — Basketball Hall of Famer Moses Malone
will be remembered at a funeral service on Saturday in Houston.
Malone, a three-time NBA MVP, died Sunday at age 60.
The funeral will be at noon CST at Houston megachurch Lakewood. The church is in the same building where the Houston
Rockets played during Malone’s time with the team from 19761982 when it was called The Summit.
Florida holds off naming
starting QB for SEC opener
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida’s starting quarterback
remains a mystery heading into the team’s Southeastern Conference opener. Coach Jim McElwain said Wednesday he hasn’t
settled on a starter for Saturday’s game at Kentucky. Sophomore
Treon Harris and redshirt freshman Will Grier split snaps during
the first two games, with each getting a start.
Harris has completed 19 of 27 passes for 269 yards and two
touchdowns. Grier has completed 26 of 35 for 317 yards and four
scores. Grier also has an interception and a fumble.
McElwain says he doesn’t have a timeline for picking one, either.
“The team has settled into it,” he said. “Here’s the good thing: both
guys are really studying the game plan. ... That mindset is you prepare yourself as a starter because you’re going to get a ton of reps.”
Jaguars TE Thomas practices
in limited role, remains out
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville Jaguars tight end
Julius Thomas has been cleared for limited practice. He still won’t
play for at least a few more weeks.
Thomas was on the field Wednesday for the first time since
breaking a bone on the back of his right hand in the preseason
opener Aug. 14. He had surgery Sept. 1, and the Jaguars have targeted Week 4 for his return. But that could be optimistic considering coach Gus Bradley said Wednesday that Thomas will return
to the hand doctor in two weeks, adding “I think we’re just waiting
to see what we find out in the second evaluation.”
Thomas signed a five-year, $46 million contract, including
$24 million guaranteed, to be the centerpiece of Jacksonville’s
receiving corps.

Bills spill their dislike of
AFC East rival Patriots
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Defensive tackle Marcell Dareus and the Buffalo Bills
really don’t like the New England Patriots. And
they’re not afraid to say it.
“Don’t nobody like the Patriots,” Dareus
said. “Let’s just be honest about it now. Put it out
there.”
Safety Aaron Williams referred to his dislike
as being personal.
“I just don’t like New England,” Williams
said, fully appreciating his comments will likely
wind up being bulletin-board material.
“They’re a great football team, don’t get that
twisted at all,” he said, before adding: “It’s just
the way they carry themselves.”
Now, Williams said, it’s time for the Bills to
start backing up their emotions on Sunday, when
the Super Bowl champions travel to Orchard
Park for an early-season AFC East showdown
between two 1-0 teams.
The Bills have good reason to carry ill will
toward New England after serving as the Patriots’
personal patsies for much of the past 15 seasons.
It’s a span in which Buffalo has gone 3-26. That
includes a mean-nothing 17-9 win in last year’s
season finale, when playoff-bound New England
rested most of its starters after the first half.
This year, the Bills vow, will be different
in their latest bid to end what now stands as a
15-season playoff drought — the NFL’s longest
active streak. To do so, they know they need to
unseat the Patriots, who have claimed the division 11 times since 2002.
“I definitely think this is the most talented
team I’ve been on,” seventh-year center Eric
Wood said. “So with that, I would assume it
would make it our best team we’ve brought
against them.”
Buffalo opened with a 27-14 win over Indianapolis last weekend. And the team is coming off
an offseason in which it restocked its roster with
high-priced talent on offense, and returned one of
the league’s top defense’s.
The Bills are further emboldened by the hiring
of brash-talking coach, Rex Ryan, who was never
afraid of taking a jab at the Patriots during his
previous six-year tenure with the New York Jets.
“I respect them probably as much as any team
in the league, but I don’t fear them, I can tell you
that much,” Ryan said, referring to New England
on Wednesday. “We don’t fear anybody. In fact
we’re looking forward to it.”
Ryan didn’t come close to repeating what he
said during his first season as Jets coach in 2009,
when suggesting he had no intention of kissing
Patriots coach Bill Belichick’s Super Bowl rings.
And yet, Ryan made it clear that beating
Belichick would be more meaningful than most
any other regular-season win.
“It is a personal challenge because you want to
go against the very best,” said Ryan, whose Jets
went 4-9 against the Patriots, including a playoff
victory in 2010. “I’d much rather have a win and
compete against a first-ballot Hall of Fame coach
in Belichick than a slappy coach.”
All the talk from Buffalo hardly resonated in
New England.
“It doesn’t matter to me,” star quarterback
Tom Brady said. “The games are won by what
you do over the course of the week and how
you go about your preparation, so that you can
be prepared for the game on Sunday. He’s a
great coach. He’s obviously got them confident. They’re ready to go — sounds like they’re
already ready to go.”
Belichick and Brady are aware that Ryan’s
arrival has generated a big buzz among Bills fans,
who roared through much of the opener against
Indianapolis.
The crowd might be even louder at Ralph
Wilson Stadium on Sunday, though Belichick
isn’t overly concerned.
Noting that the Patriots can take the crowd
out of the game by getting off to a fast start,
Belichick said: “They will be as loud as we
allow them to be.”
A New England-based reporter posted Belichick’s comment on his Twitter account. The Bills
retweeted the comment on their team’s account
with the note: “That’s cute.”
“The game’s at our place on Sunday, let’s see
what happens,” Ryan said. “If they beat us they
beat us, but we don’t concede anything. We’re
not beat just because they get off the bus, like
some teams.”
NOTES: CB Corey Graham practiced on a
limited basis while still being monitored for a
concussion. His playing status is uncertain. ...
The Bills will honor former GM Bill Polian, who
will receive his Hall of Fame ring on Sunday.

Happy Birthday: You’ve got what it takes to push your way to the top. Relentless courage and sheer
determination will help you achieve goals you could only dream about in the past. Stand tall and use any
adversity or challenges you face as your driving force. Take charge and don’t let anyone deter you from
doing what you want to do. Your numbers are 8, 14, 24, 26, 31, 34, 42.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Follow through with your plans. Don’t let boredom set in, causing you to
abandon a project or pursuit that has the potential to alter your life or a relationship that’s important to you.
Believe in your abilities and finish what you start. ✸✸✸
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Look at the big picture. Now is not the time to try to do the impossible.
Try to set up a realistic exercise routine that will help strengthen you mentally, physically and emotionally.
Avoid jealousy and possessiveness. ✸✸✸
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Do your own thing. Don’t meddle in other people’s affairs. Chitchat is fine,
but criticizing or telling others how to do things will work against you. A low-key approach will bring the
highest returns. ✸✸✸
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Accept what’s going on around you and you will avoid barriers. Learning
to take whatever comes your way and making it work for you is an art that can help you turn any negative
situation into a positive. ✸✸✸✸✸
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Minor adjustments will be all it takes to make things work in your favor. Make a
point to shorten your to-do list and do whatever you can to make the self-improvements that will add to
your appeal. Love is on the rise. ✸✸
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Learn from your experiences. Use your ability to keep a secret to your
advantage. A relationship issue will become clear once you step back and look at the motives behind the
problem. Assess the situation and make adjustments. ✸✸✸✸
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Decide if you need to make changes in order to reach the happiness you
dream about. If things aren’t going well at home, speak up. You have plenty to offer and shouldn’t settle
for less than you deserve. ✸✸✸
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): You’ll have trouble making a decision when it comes to emotional matters.
Take a step back and sit tight until you feel grounded enough to make suggestions that are feasible. An
unusual proposal will be made. ✸✸✸
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Love, adventure and travel are all featured, but don’t go over budget
or let indulgence take over. You’ll be tempted to follow someone who isn’t the best influence on you physically, emotionally or financially. Think before committing to something you may come to regret. ✸✸✸
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Tweak the way you do things and you’ll attract interest in yourself and
your latest idea. Investing in something that brings you joy and can save you money is favored. Distance
yourself from indecisive people. ✸✸✸✸
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Control your emotions and do what needs to be done. Actions are
favored over talks. Show how much you care and what you are willing to do in order to make things work
for everyone involved. Love the one you are with. ✸✸
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Let your mind wander and ideas will pop into your head that will help you
move in a direction that suits you. Rely on your imagination and insight and keep things simple, original
and affordable. ✸✸✸✸✸
Birthday Baby: You are dedicated, unique and sensitive. You are popular and proactive.

SAPPHIRES PASS AS DIAMONDS IN CASE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY
DEAR ABBY: Last year I gave my new (at that time) girlfriend, “Alyssa,” a pair of earrings for her birthday.
They were in a box from a department store marked “fine jewelry.” She loved them and became emotional in
expressing her gratitude. I thought it was because it was the first piece of jewelry I had ever bought for her.
When she opened the box I explained that they were her birthstone -- sapphires -- but WHITE sapphires.
In her excitement she must have missed that part. The earrings are large -- maybe one carat apiece. Yesterday I overheard my granddaughter ask Alyssa if they were real diamonds, and Alyssa told her yes!
I kept my mouth shut when she said it, but now I understand why she was so excited when she first saw
them. She cherishes the earrings and has told me numerous times she will never take them off. I want to
make this right, but I’m afraid she’ll feel embarrassed because she must have told her girlfriends and family
I gave her diamond earrings -- which I didn’t. Abby, what do I do? -- LOVING BOYFRIEND IN VIRGINIA
DEAR BOYFRIEND: You should straighten this out with your girlfriend, but do it privately. After that, let
her disclose the fact that her diamond earrings are really sapphires at her discretion -- or not.

DEAR ABBY: My husband’s daughter and her husband are in their early 40s. When they invite us to visit
them, there is never any preparation or advance planning. They provide no clean sheets or towels. If they
order out, they expect us to pay.
When they visit us, they leave beer cans in the bookcases, devour all snacks without asking, etc. Their
house smells strongly of pet odors. If we opt to stay in a hotel, they are offended.
Every occasion revolves around drinking alcohol, and lots of it. I’ll have one drink, so they won’t say I
am uptight and feel uncomfortable around me. My husband is intimidated by his strong-willed daughter,
and wishes this just would all go away.
There have been many, many more incidents and overall generally narcissistic and rude behavior.
My husband wants a relationship with his daughter. What to do? -- JUST WANTS TO RELAX
DEAR JUST WANTS: You either grin and bear it -- and that includes laundering your own sheets and
towels when you visit -- or send your husband to visit his daughter alone.

DEAR ABBY: A very good friend of mine had a facelift. I’m out of the country, so I have only seen pictures of her. I don’t think it looks good at all. It looks fake and, in my opinion, has ruined her looks.
What should I say when I see her or when she asks me directly what I think of it? I hate to lie, but I don’t
want to hurt her feelings. -- HONEST FRIEND
DEAR HONEST: Sometimes people can be “too” honest, so be diplomatic if you are asked directly. Tell
her you always thought she was beautiful -- inside and out -- and thought she looked great before, but if
she’s happy with the result, that’s what’s important.

At 1-0 like last
season, Titans
wary of repeat
performance…
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Tennessee Titans are in an
all too familiar situation, a case of deja vu they can’t wait to end.
Just like 2014, the Titans went 2-2 in the preseason and opened
the season with a big win on the road. Now they want to ensure
their rout at Tampa Bay doesn’t end up being half their win total,
which was the case last season when the Titans finished 2-14 after
a surprising season-opening win at Kansas City.
Left tackle Taylor Lewan wants his teammates so focused on
avoiding a repeat of 2014 that he made sure rookie quarterback
Marcus Mariota was aware of the similarities while they watched
the 42-14 win in Tampa Bay from the sideline in the fourth quarter.
Lewan also talked to coach Ken Whisenhunt as soon as they got on
the plane. “I think everyone’s very wary of what happened last year,”
Lewan said Wednesday. “I mean we’re a different team. We’re
establishing a different culture about us, and we’re ready to play this
football game. ... We just have to continue to keep growing.”
Making the Titans even more cautious is their opponent
Sunday. They set the wrong kind of NFL mark last season against
the Cleveland Browns, blowing a 25-point lead that was largest
ever by a home team in losing.
Right guard Chance Warmack said that ranks in the category
of something a person never forgets, especially the fourth-and-1
they didn’t convert with a chance to run out the clock to seal a win.
Instead, the Titans were left at 1-4 and finished the season with 10
straight losses. “I’m not going to say it haunts you throughout your
career, but you definitely remember things like that,” Warmack
said. “Going into Cleveland just want to put yourself in the best
situation possible.”
These Titans are very different from last season with 18 new
players on the roster, including seven starters. The biggest change
is at quarterback where Mariota is coming off a nearly impeccable
debut. Mariota had a perfect passer rating of 158.3 against Jameis
Winston and Tampa Bay while throwing four touchdown passes.
It was the kind of win Mariota enjoyed frequently in college at
Oregon, and the rookie called it a confidence booster for one game.
“I wasn’t here last year, but a lot of the guys continue to talk
about how they won the first game and it didn’t work out so well,”
Mariota said. “So these guys are really motivated. They know they
can’t take all the credit in the world right now. We’ve just got to
focus on what’s at hand and take it one day at a time.”
Mariota also has heard a little bit about the loss to the Browns.
“That’s why these guys in the locker room are motivated and
hungry to redeem it,” Mariota said.
This franchise hasn’t started 2-0 since 2008 — its last playoff
appearance. So Whisenhunt can just point back to last year if he
sees anyone not focused enough. “That certainly helps, but that’s
where we are as a football team,” Whisenhunt said. “We really
haven’t done anything. I like our approach. I like the way that guys
have handled it, and hopefully we’ll keep doing it.”
Notes: TE Delanie Walker said his right wrist was sprained.
He did not practice Wednesday along with CB Jason McCourty
(groin), NT Sammie Hill (right knee), CB Cody Riggs (knee) and
RB Antonio Andrews (hamstring).

Week 2: Apparently Dallas coach Tom Landry was unimpressed. Staubach didn’t start another game the rest of the season
after ceding the job to veteran Craig Morton.
It got better, right? Roger that. (Cue groans).
Staubach finally took over full-time in 1971. Eight years and two
Super Bowl titles later, Staubach retired as arguably the best quarterback of the 1970s and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1985.
ROBERT GRIFFIN III
Week 1: Oh the fall of 2012, a simpler time when RG3 was the
reigning Heisman Trophy winner and perhaps the most exciting
player in football. The sixth pass of his career went 88 yards to Pierre
Garcon for a touchdown, and he threw for 320 and two scores in all
as the Redskins stunned New Orleans on the road, 40-32.
Week 2: Griffin was solid against the St. Louis Rams, going 20
of 29 for 206 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 82 yards and
two scores, but the Rams rallied for a 31-28 win.
It got better, right? Uh, not really.
Griffin was Rookie of the Year in 2012, but shredded his right
knee in a playoff loss to Seattle. He hasn’t been the same since
because ... it’s the Redskins.

New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski runs after catching a pass against the Pittsburgh
Steelers in the second half of an NFL football game, Thursday, Sept. 10, 2015, in Foxborough, Mass.

Unsung tight ends have big
opening weekend in the NFL
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — A big, dynamic tight
end is a mismatch nightmare for NFL defenses.
Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham are too
quick for a linebacker and too big for a safety.
“ When you have a tight end you can count on
to catch the football, especially in the red zone,
it’s huge,” Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians
said. “It gives the defense another guy to worry
about. You have to pick who you are going to
single cover and if you are going to double cover
one of them.”
A new crop of sure-handed, athletic tight ends
surfaced in a big way in Sunday’s season openers.
“It’s a special position,” Cincinnati coach
Marvin Lewis said. “The way football is going,
it seems like kids aren’t gravitating as much to
running back, they’re going to receiver.”
Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Tyler Eifert and
Darren Fells may not be familiar names around
the league, but they soon could be.
Arizona safety Tyrann Mathieu, who stands
5-foot-9, is as good as anyone at defending the
big guys, but says it’s a huge challenge.
“It’s tough to get around their bodies,” he
said. “They’re just so good at boxing you out and
keeping you from the flight of the football. You
just have to play ball-hawking football and just
be extra competitive.”
Seferian-Jenkins was a rare bright spot for
the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in their 42-14 loss to
Tennessee. Slowed by injuries, the 2014 secondround pick out of Washington caught five passes
for 110 yards. His two touchdowns matched his
total for all of last season. His yards receiving
in one game were almost half of his total of last
year (221).
“I wasn’t here last year,” Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter said, “but Austin
looked like he was moving towards the type of
player that we all want him to be.”
The Bengals expected big things from Eifert a
year ago, but he injured his elbow in the opener
and never played again. He emphatically showed
he was back with his nine-reception, 104-yard
performance in Cincinnati’s 33-13 win over Oakland on Sunday.
Perhaps no one has a more interesting story
than Fells. The 6-foot-7, 281-pound Arizona tight
end played basketball at Cal-Irvine, then spent
five years playing hoops in Belgium, Finland and
Argentina before deciding to switch to football.
Fells toiled on the Cardinals practice squad
in 2013, then played in 10 games last season,
catching just five passes for 71 yards.
“It was like trying to learn Chinese coming in
here,” he said. “All the coaches were talking and I
had no clue what they were talking about. Having
to pick up the language first, then the playbook
was second after that. It took a lot of time.”
Fells’ biggest challenge was learning to block.
Catching came easier, thanks to all those years of
basketball.
After a strong preseason, and with other tight
ends struggling with injuries, Fells won the
starting job.
In Arizona’s 31-19 opening win over New
Orleans, he caught four passes for 82 yards, the
most yards receiving in game for a Cardinals tight
end since 1989. With fellow tight end Jermaine
Gresham delivering a crushing block that cleared
two defenders out of the way, Fells gained 48
yards on one play. His fingertip catch of Carson
Palmer’s 17-yard pass for a touchdown clinched
the victory with 1:33 to play.
“He knew he had to step up and make plays,”
Palmer said, “and to see him do what he did and
exceed expectations was huge.”
Not unexpectedly, Gronkowski and fellow
veteran tight ends Jared Cook and Heath Miller
had big days.
So did Travis Kelce, who may not be a household name but should be. He had six catches for
106 yards and two scores in Kansas-City’s 27-20
win over Houston. For Chiefs fans, his performance was not unexpected: Kelce led the Chiefs
with 67 catches for 862 yards last season.
“It’s one of those things where I want to have
all the eyes on myself, so other guys can shine
when I’m on the field,” Kelce said. “Taking coverages, taking defenders away from other guys so
they can get open. It’s going to be fun what we
can really accomplish here.”

Everything is awesome about
Lego Vatican on view in Philly
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The city’s science museum
already was hosting a blockbuster exhibit of Lego sculptures and
preparing to unveil a huge display of Holy See treasures for the
pope’s visit when administrators got a serendipitous inquiry.
Would they like to see a model of the Vatican that a priest
built entirely of Legos?
“It’s amazing,” said Larry Dubinski, president and CEO of
The Franklin Institute, where the plastic brick structure is now on
view in downtown Philadelphia. “People are in awe.”
The Rev. Bob Simon spent about 10 months constructing a
mini St. Peter’s Basilica out of a half-million Legos. His architectural feat includes a Lego pope on a balcony overlooking the
crowd in St. Peter’s Square, which itself is made up of about
44,000 Lego pieces resembling cobblestones.
A colorful cast of Lego characters populates the piazza,
including a nun with a selfie stick and a bespectacled figurine
of Simon. All told, the display measures 14 feet by 6 feet and
weighs about 100 pounds.
“It was daunting,” said Simon. “It was an exercise in patience,
and I was thrilled with the way everything came out.”
Simon said he built his first, rather crude, Lego model of the
Roman Catholic church’s headquarters when he was in seventh
grade. Today, he serves as pastor at St. Catherine of Siena church
in Moscow, Pennsylvania, about 100 miles north of Philadelphia.
He’s been to the real Vatican five times.
To create the model, Simon used an image from a book cover as
a guide. The hardest part was creating the round basilica dome from
square bricks, he said. Although he looked for hints by watching
YouTube videos, “I hardly understood what I was watching.”
Yet he persevered. Using Lego life preservers to replicate the
dome’s windows — one of many ways he repurposed various
shapes — he delicately built the structure without glue.
Denise Brownell, visiting the museum from Phoenix, was
duly impressed.
“It’s just such a perfect replica of the real thing,” said
Brownell. “It’s just awesome.”
Simon started the project a year ago in an empty room in his
rectory. He finished in time to bring it to BrickFair, a Lego convention held over the summer near Washington, D.C., where it
received many accolades. A friend then suggested The Franklin
Institute might be interested.
Simon’s creation is being displayed alongside “The Art of the
Brick,” an exhibit of Lego sculptures, and “Vatican Splendors,”
which opens Saturday. The latter includes art, vestments and
religious relics from the Holy See.
There are no plans for the pope to see the Lego Vatican while
he’s in Philadelphia. But Simon hopes to see Francis: He will
participate in the papal Mass on Sept. 27.
