He lived on Earth in the future. Ender stood out because he was really smart. His older brother, Peter, was jealous of him. He was mean to Ender. Ender was also teased in school. One day at school boys started to pick on Ender. Ender kicked one of the boys and hurt him. Ender was upset. Ender did not want to be mean like Peter. Ender went home and saw his sister, Valentine. She was much nicer than Peter. Ender loved her. Peter was mean to Valentine and Ender. Ender did not want to be mean like Peter. Chapters 3‐4 People in the military had been watching Ender. They knew how smart and tough he was. The morning after the fight, someone knocked at the door. It was the captain of the Battle School, named Graff. Graff invited Ender to join the Battle School on a spaceship. The Battle School trained kids to fight aliens. Ender went to Battle School. Ender did not know if he wanted to go to Battle School because he would have to leave his family. It would also be hard work, but Ender decided to go to Battle School. He wanted to protect people from the aliens. Ender went to Battle School. Ender and many other boys took a space shuttle to the Battle School. Ender was nervous. Graff told the boys that Ender was the smartest one there. They started to pick on him and Ender got upset. He grabbed one of the boys and broke his arm. Ender did not mean to hurt him so badly, but he was trying to protect himself. He was afraid that no one would be his friend. Graff did not want Ender to have friends because he wanted Ender to be the best student at the school. Ender went to Battle School. Chapters 5‐6 Ender and the boys arrived at the Battle School. He shared a room with the other boys. No one would talk to Ender. At night, the other boys cried because they missed their families. Ender missed his family, but he did not cry. Ender learned about battles. Ender took classes and played video games to learn about battles. He was very good at the battle games. He learned how to win by watching other boys play. Ender beat two older boys. He felt good when he won. Ender learned about battles. The boys also practiced fighting battles in a room with no gravity. It was called the battle room. Teams used it to practice fighting. They wore spacesuits that made it hard to move. It was very different from moving on Earth. Ender and the other new boys went to the battle room for the first time. Ender learned about battles. Ender and his friends practiced floating and shooting lasers. Ender moved faster than the other boys. He also learned very quickly that the lasers froze people. This helped him do well. After the other boys found out Ender did well in the battle room, they stopped teasing him. Ender learned about battles. Chapters 7‐8 After learning about the battle room, Ender was ready to join an army. The armies practiced fighting each other in the battle room. Ender was placed in the Salamander army. The other boys were older and bigger than him. The commander, Bonzo, did not want Ender in his army because Ender was so small. Ender joined an army. There was also one girl in the Salamander army. Her name was Petra. She wanted to help Ender train. In the battle room, she taught him how to shoot the lasers. Ender joined an army. Bonzo would not let Ender fight in the Salamander army’s battles. Bonzo told Ender to just float in the battle room. Ender knew he could help them, so he froze a soldier from the other army. Even though Ender helped, Bonzo was mad at Ender for using the laser. Bonzo traded Ender to the Rat army. Ender joined an army. Ender’s new leader in the Rat army was Dink. He thought Ender was smart and could be a good soldier. Ender froze lots of soldiers from the other army in battle. Ender taught the Rat army new ways to fight. Ender joined an army. Chapters 9‐10 At the Battle School, Ender became a leader in the army. Ender was sad because fighting all the time made him feel like Peter. He wanted to be nice like his sister, Valentine. Ender was the best soldier in the Battle School. Back on Earth, Valentine missed Ender. The captain of the Battle School, Graff, visited her. He wanted her to write a letter to Ender to help him feel better. She told him that he was not like Peter. Ender was the best soldier in the Battle School. Ender became a commander of his own army. It was called the Dragon army. He was a tough commander and he taught his soldiers everything he knew. Being commander made Ender feel lonely. Ender was the best soldier in the Battle School. One of his soldiers was named Bean. Bean was very small and smart, just like Ender. He learned quickly. Ender was tough on Bean, just like Graff was tough on Ender. Ender was the best soldier in the Battle School. Chapters 11‐12 The Dragon army had their first battle. They fought differently than the other armies. This helped them win. The other commanders did not like Ender because he was better than them. They won all of their battles. No one could beat them. Ender was the smartest commander. Ender was happy with and proud of his army. They trusted each other and were good friends. Ender’s army was the best. Graff made the battles harder and harder for Ender’s army. In one battle, they had to fight two armies at once. This made them very tired, but they still won every battle. Ender’s army was the best. One of the armies they beat was Bonzo’s army. Bonzo was very upset when he lost. He wanted to hurt Ender. Ender was afraid of Bonzo. Bonzo tried to hurt Ender, but Ender protected himself and won the fight. Ender was sad that he hurt Bonzo. Ender’s army was the best. Ender finished Battle School. Graff wanted him to go to Command School. Usually, boys did not go to Command School until they were 16 years old. Ender was only nine. Ender needed a break, so he went back to visit Earth. Ender’s army was the best. Chapter 13 On Earth, Ender stayed in a house by a lake. He floated on the water and relaxed. Valentine visited Ender there. It had been a long time since they had seen each other. Ender told her that he did not want to go to Command School. He was tired of hurting people. Valentine told Ender that he should go fight the aliens. Ender took a break on Earth. Ender agreed with Valentine. He went to Command School with Graff. The Command School was on a different planet. Ender took a break on Earth. Chapters 14‐15 Ender played a new game at Command School. It let him practice being a commander of a group of soldiers. Ender was very good at the game. Ender learned that he had to kill the queen alien to destroy all of the aliens. Ender had to destroy the aliens. Ender started playing the game with his friends from the Battle School. He could not see them. They were on different spaceships. It was Ender’s job to tell the other boys what to do. They practiced together a lot. They were all very tired from fighting. Ender had to destroy the aliens. One morning Ender was told that he would take his final test at Command School. Lots of people came to watch him. Ender used the biggest weapon to destroy the queen alien’s planet. The planet and all the alien spaceships disappeared. Ender thought that his teachers would be upset. He thought he cheated by using the biggest weapon in the game. Ender had to destroy the aliens. When he turned around the adults were clapping and cheering. Graff thanked Ender. Ender did not understand why they were so happy. Graff told him that he was not playing a game. He was really fighting the aliens, and he won! He saved the Earth and all of the people from the aliens. The queen’s planet and all of the aliens were gone. Ender was upset. He was tricked into destroying the aliens. Ender had to destroy the aliens. Since the aliens were gone, people wanted to live on their planets. Ender and Valentine move to one of the old alien planets. They started a new life there.
