East Lake High School Summer Reading 2015 Reading is an integral part of the curriculum of East Lake High School. To keep our students in the habit of reading and to support the curriculum of the school year, the follow summer reading books and assignments are required. All students at East Lake are to complete the readings and assignments before the first week of school. Teachers will be collecting the work assigned and it will be a substantial grade. Listed below are the books for all English classes except the AP courses; please see the separate lists provided for AP. While ISBN numbers are provided, students are not required to buy these editions of the books; they may read books from public libraries, electronic editions or older editions – as long as they read the titles listed. These books were chosen thoughtfully to both challenge and engage our students; if for some reason your family finds a title objectionable, please contact the school for an alternate title. All students are required to read two books and complete two reading logs – instructions and examples are included with this document. ALL COURSES REQUIRE TWO BOOKS TO BE READ THIS SUMMER. Questions? Contact your child’s teacher. If you have questions over the summer, please contact Mrs. Jennifer Anderson andersonjen@pcsb.org Class/Course English 1 Regular Book Title The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian The Hot Zone Author Sherman Alexie ISBN 9780316013697 Richard Preston 978-0385479561 The Sword of the Rightful King Jane Yolen 978-0152025335 The Hot Zone Richard Preston 978-0385479561 English 2 Regular Night Every Day Elie Wiesel David Levithan 978-0-374-50001-6 978-0307931894 English 2 Honors— Into the Wild Jon Krakauer 978-0385486804 Every Day David Levithan 978-0307931894 The Things They Carried (paperback) Ask Me No Questions An Unfinished Season Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass Black Like Me A Hope In the Unseen All the Light We Cannot See A Thousand Splendid Suns InvisibleMan Tim O’Brien Marina Budhos Ward Just Frederick Douglass John Howard Griffin Ron Suskind Anthony Doerr Khaled Hosseini Ralph Ellison 978-0618706419 978-1416949206 978-0618568284 978-1629100081 978-0451234216 978-0767901260 978-1476746586 978-1594483851 978-0679732761 1984 George Orwell 978-0451524935 One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Ken Kesey 978-0451163967 Comp 1 1984 George Orwell 978-0451524935 Comp 2 Brave New World Aldous Huxley 978-0060850524 English 1 Honors English 3 Standard English 3 Honors English 4 Standard Choose 2 of the following books English 4 Honors FOR BOTH SUMMER READING BOOKS: Create a reading log about the book as you read. Complete the log by choosing five ( 5 )quotes from the text that cover the book’s entirety, responding to each quote with a personal thought or observation and five (5) scenes in the book which made an impact on you or were pivotal to the plot of the book; be sure to include important imagery and details. Remember, teachers have access to Sparknotes, too, so choose your own material! Example of Quote Log The Great Santini by Pat Conroy PAGE/ CHAPTER 41/4 Sally Jones: Reading Log 7/15/14 WHAT THE BOOK SAYS . . . WHAT I THOUGHT . . . “He longed for a sense of place, of belonging and of permanence. He wanted to live in one house, grow old in one neighborhood, and wanted friends whose faces did not change yearly.” I can’t imagine what it must have been like to move every single year. I have lived in the same house my entire life, from kindergarten until now. To have to grow accustomed to new places, new rules, and to make new friends every year would be really tough. Example of Scene Log Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card PAGE/ CHAPTER 33-34/4 Sally Jones: Reading Log 8/1/14 SCENE IN THE BOOK . . . IMPORTANCE/IMPACT . . . When Ender arrives at Battle School, he has just broken the arm of Bernard, another Launchie who had tried to hurt him on the transport ship. He asks why Colonel Graff didn’t help him when he was being harassed, why Graff started the rift between the students in the first place, and Graff says he is not Ender’s friend. This scene was important because it was the beginning of Ender’s separation from the other boys. I learned that Graff was setting Ender apart on purpose and Ender begins to feel afraid of the adults around him, as well as the other Battle School kids. When you return to school, your reading log, with 5 quotes and 5 scenes, will be due within the first week of classes. You may also be asked to complete other tests or assignments on your summer reading books. The summer reading assignments will be a substantial portion of your grade for the first grading period, so please take this assignment seriously. Reading logs are to be typed or neatly hand-written in blue or black ink. Any typed logs must be printed prior to turning in the assignment. Plagiarism from websites or other students will result in a 0 for the summer reading assignment.
