PASEO SPONSOR'S INSTRUCTIONS It is the responsibility of the SPONSOR to see that these forms are completed correctly and given to the candidate’s sponsoring parish priests. Candidates for Paseo must be baptized Christians who are free from significant emotional or psychological problems. Paseo is not meant to be a conversion experience, but rather is intended for those who are already committed to Christ and who seek a means to grow in and share their faith. Candidates must be baptized communicants. If candidates are married, both husband and wife should attempt to attend during the same weekend, though that is not required. Be sure to tell your candidate that this application is not for a specific weekend. There may be a waiting list, according to the demands for the weekend. Those who submit their applications first are placed in a weekend first. If your candidate is married, you should have a separate application form for each spouse. Have your candidate complete the application form on Page 2 and return it to you. Be sure that all items on the candidate's application are complete and accurate and then complete the sponsor's commitment (Page 4). It would be helpful if the sponsor would also complete the top two lines of the Sponsoring Parish Priest's Recommendation (page 6). Give all three parts of the application material (Candidate Application, Sponsor's Commitment, Sponsoring Parish Priest's Recommendation), to the candidate's priest (not the sponsor's priest) for approval. It is the responsibility of the Candidate's Paseo Lay Rector to forward the application. If possible, sponsors should be from the candidate's parish. Married Candidates' applications should be submitted together. Your sponsor will forward your application to the Paseo Lay Rector. You should understand that this application is not for a specific weekend. After your application has been received, you will be notified of a specific date and location for your Paseo weekend. What is Paseo? Paseo is a Lay ministry movement within the Anglican community. It is one of several “Fourth Day” movements patterned after the Catholic Cursillo. Cursillo has its roots in the Spanish Catholic church, hence the several Spanish words used in the event. “Paseo” is Spanish for “stroll” or “walk.” We chose Paseo as the name for our program because it is a journey more than a course of instruction, a walk with Jesus where the Holy Spirit reveals the power and the love of God in new ways to us, and helps us to live as Christians spreading His Gospel. Paseo is a powerful instrument for renewal as well as Christian leadership development and encouragement in the Church. Paseo begins on a Thursday evening and ends the following Sunday. During those three days the participants (Pilgrims) listen to talks given by priests and lay people, and participate in small table discussions, while worshiping, singing and playing together. The staff of the Paseo is composed of Priests and lay people. The Priests, who are the spiritual directors for the weekend, and the lay people who make up the Paseo team spend weeks working and praying together in preparation for the event. The talks include topics like Grace, Laity in the Church, Piety, Study, Sacraments, Leaders, and Christian Community. These talks and the associated activities are linked together in a carefully constructed sequence to build on one another step by step, so it is important that you plan to stay for the full three days in order to garner the full benefit of the program. During the weekend you are on God’s time, and so we’ll ask you to surrender your watches and alarm clocks, your cell phones and PDA’s, IPods and MP3 players. If you have a medication schedule we’ll make sure it’s on time. If any world shattering events occur that you need to know about we’ll tell you. We will have an emergency contact point should anyone really need to get you, but your sponsor and the Paseo community will do all in its power to ensure your house and your children and your kin and your pets thrive during your absence and that you can concentrate on your Paseo experience without external worries or distractions. There will also be some surprises during the weekend. These are along the lines of presents under the Christmas tree, so we won’t tell you about them in advance ! The “Fourth Day” follows the Paseo… that is, the rest of your life on earth. In the Paseo movement, the community spirit is continued through active Christian leadership in dayto-day life, in small group reunion meetings, periodic regional meetings and in sponsorship and participation in Paseo weekends as staff or in support roles. All of these activities are available to encourage spiritual improvement and Christian life. Join us on a Paseo weekend soon. You will rank it high in your life experiences.
