A collaborative program that will
bring together members of the
UConn Jewish community in
partnership with another campus
organization in a spirit of creativity and tzedakah. Students make
fleece blankets during this program
that will go directly to individuals in
need this winter.

Jewish LGBT Youth Initiative
Jewish Federation
JCRC, JT Connect, the Mandell
JCC and Keshet are partnering to
create a “safe space” environment
for LGBT Jewish teens and friends.
Staff will work with this group to answer questions, plan programming
and work through issues that are
unique to the LGBT teen population.
The new department of Hillel International, Hinenu, offers some of the
best contemporary Israeli artists,
writers and speakers. This semester,
Trinity will bring in the humanitarian group IsraAID, Assi Azar (LGBT
TV personality) and a female
entrepreneur/activist. Mishloach Manot

UConn Hillel
Students will spend an afternoon
prior to Purim fulfilling the mitzvah of
“Mishloach Manot,” or sending small
gifts and sweets to friends in celebration of the holiday. This is a fun way
for members of the UConn Jewish
community to connect with the holiday and Jewish tradition as well as
remind students that Hillel is here for
them on campus.

As interest in creative food culture
expands exponentially, this new
program teaches the culinary and
cultural routes that Jews have taken
throughout time. Through food,
memoirs and experiences, students
will explore what has connected the
Jewish people.

Taste of Israel
University of Hartford Hillel
Taste of Israel connects students to
Israel with food, music and interactive art. The first annual Taste of
Israel was awarded an “Outstanding
Program” Award at the Student Affairs
award ceremony in Spring 2015.

Family Fun with Mr. G
Lunchtime Learning Series
Mr. G, a two-time Parents Choice
Award winner and a leading international figure in children’s music, will
perform a family concert open to the
entire community. Mr. G has won a
Latin Grammy and his album ‘Bugs’
was picked as a top CD by Parents
and People magazines.
A new series that will be offered
2-3 times per year will provide an
opportunity for community members
to explore a wide variety of topics in
the areas of Jewish history, arts and
culture.

Traveling Exhibits:
Israel & Cuba
Jewish Historical Society
JHS would like to bring two exhibits
to the community. “The Many Faces
of Israel” is a photographic documentary about the people of Israel, past
and present. “Cuban Jews” is a pictorial history of the Jewish people of
Cuba. Both exhibits provide a unique
look at two fascinating communities.

Teacher Training
Singing, dance and the arts are a big
part of the Schechter education. New
stage lighting is needed so the school
can showcase the fantastic work of
its students.

Creating a strong connection between science, protecting the earth
and Jewish learning is a centerpiece of the Schechter curriculum.
One way students are engaged in
this is through gardening. Supplies
are needed as part of a year long
program that includes planting of
potatoes, herbs and flowers.

In order to add greater personal meaning to the holiday, the school would
like to publish collected thoughts of
students as a supplement to the traditional Haggadah.

Hebrew High School of New England
As part of their history curriculum,
students participate in the Yeshiva
University Model UN. The two day
event in New York is an outstanding
opportunity for students to see how
international policy is created by actually participating in the process. The
Yeshiva Model UN has an additional
focus on issues facing Israel.
Commission on Jewish Education and
Leadership
PJ Library and CJEL will provide
teachers with books, curriculum, online resources and training on how
to implement PJ materials into their
classrooms.

Currently the music room keyboard at
HHNE is not functional. A new portable keyboard is necessary to grow
the music program. The electronic
piano offers portability and the inclusion of other synthesized instruments
to the program.

which will make sitting and standing safer and more comfortable for

Never Forget: A Special Seder

In collaboration with the JCC, Voices
of Hope and the Greenberg Center,
JFS will sponsor a Seder for Holocaust
survivors and others who are isolated
or alone. Rabbi Lazowski will lead,
using his Hagaddah which relates enslavement and release in Egypt to the
experience of the Holocaust.

Every day residents spend hours sitting and socializing in the lobby and
atrium areas. As a result, the sofas
have become worn from many years
of heavy use. At least three new
sofas are needed so residents can
continue to comfortably enjoy one
another’s company.

Furniture in the Long Term Care
Visiting Room was last replaced
in 1989. The visiting rooms allow
families ample space to reconnect
with their loved ones in a home-like
non-clinical atmosphere. New furniture will provide improved seating
space for comfort, safety and warmer
aesthetics.

In an effort to be fully welcoming and
to provide support and information for
LGBTQ clients, JFS needs a variety of
specialized games, books, DVDs and
other resources. Many clients cannot
afford to purchase these items and
they are often not available at public
libraries.

School will have the opportunity to
tour the museum, have lunch with an
historian and hear from a Holocaust
survivor as part of an effort to educate and create bridges between our
communities.

The next few years will likely be
the last opportunity to hear actual
testimony from Holocaust Survivors/
Liberators. Training their children
to continue their work is paramount
in Holocaust education. A series of
five workshops are in development
to train this next generation how
to share the stories and lessons
of the Holocaust with schools and
community groups.

Children’s Reading Partners (formerly
HJCL) is expanding its Elementary
Express reading mentoring program
to include an after school program in
Hartford. By adding an after school
option, anybody who works full time
can volunteer and provide invaluable
reading support to at-risk students.
