LIRN® Quick Reference
What is LIRN?
The Library and Information Resources Network, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation formed in
1996, is a consortium of educational institutions that have joined together for cost effective access to
information resources.
What does LIRN do?
LIRN provides group purchasing and centralized management of electronic information resources for
its members along with hosted proxy and custom federated search services. The LIRN virtual library
provides students at member institutions with millions of full text resources to support their studies.
Access to these resources is managed through an authentication gateway. The LIRN technical team
can also provide consulting and other electronic services.
Where is LIRN?
LIRN is a multi-location, virtual organization. The business office is located in Largo, Florida; the
gateway servers are housed in a commercial data center in Tampa, Florida; and the officers, trustees,
and technical staff are at various locations around the U.S. More information, including phone

How does LIRN communicate?
LIRN conducts its business primarily via electronic means: email, the web, newsletters, social media,
and regular board teleconferences. Members and friends are encouraged to dial in and join the
teleconferences, which are typically normally held 10-11 a.m. ET on the last Thursday of the month
unless otherwise announced. The teleconference dial in number is 1-888-693-8686 and the
conference ID is 7939950604. There is an annual business meeting of LIRN members in the spring.
Meeting announcements, agendas, and directions are posted on social media and our web site. There
are also outgoing only mailing lists for announcements and newsletters to LIRN member librarian,
technical, and administrative contacts.

Who are the LIRN members?
As of May 31st, 2012, there were 184 LIRN member institutions at 635 locations; primarily
independent colleges and universities, which range in size from less than 100 students to multicampus institutions with thousands of students. LIRN members are featured on our web site:

What does LIRN membership cost?
Pricing for the 2012-2013 academic year remains the same as for the previous year. There is an
annual membership fee of $750 and a per student fee to subscribe to LIRN services. Subscription fees
are $7 per student for the Core Collection, with optional Business, Medical, and Career modules
available at $2.50 per student for each module. Fees are typically pro-rated for new members who
join during the academic year. Contact the LIRN office for details.
What services are available with a subscription?
LIRN offers a Core Collection, which may be combined in various ways with the optional modules to
meet the needs of our members.

LIRNSearch:
LIRN has partnered with a leading vendor to provide federated search services to its members.
LIRNSearch is included with the Core Collection and Optional Modules 1 and 2 at no additional cost.
LIRNSearch allows your students to search your LIRN provided resources concurrently or in groups
of products. An optional premium federated search service is also available to member institutions.
LIRNSearch+ combines your LIRN provided resources with your locally purchased products in one
customizable federated search environment. Pricing depends upon the products to be included. If

Hosted proxy:
LIRN provides a hosted proxy server service to its members. Pricing is tiered depending on the
number of resources to be proxied, and includes a license, a managed virtual server with a unique IP

New and trial products:
Members who subscribe to the Core Collection will automatically receive any new products which may
be added to the Core during the academic year. LIRN may also offer free vendor trials to members
and request their feedback as we evaluate potential new products.
Other Products:
LIRN is able to offer discounted pricing for some products that are not included in our formal
packages. Please contact the LIRN office to find out what is available or to request that we investigate
a product you are interested in purchasing.
Training:
Links to LIRN and vendor training materials may be found under the Training tab on our website. In
addition, our vendors conduct training sessions throughout the academic year. LIRN will provide
certificates of attendance to these training sessions for professional development purposes.

Statistics and admin console:
Members are given login credentials for the iLIRN admin console where they can view
statistical reports, upload a logo and information specific to their institution, and choose
custom settings for their students, including the default View of the post login menu.
Gateway Views:
There are several available views of the LIRN post login menu that support different
learning styles, including Alphabetical, Basic, Classic, Simple, and Subject product
arrangements. A library can choose an appropriate default View for their students that
matches their instructional practices using the iLIRN admin console. A user can also
temporarily change the View during a browser session to suit their individual tastes.
