LIBRARY & INFORMATION RESOURCES NETWORK MARCH 2014 LIRN® Quick Reference THE LIRN CONSORTIUM The Library and Information Resources Network, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation formed in 1996, is a consortium of educational institutions that have joined together for cost effective access to information resources. LIRN provides group purchasing and centralized management of electronic information resources for its members along with hosted proxy and custom federated search services. The LIRN virtual library provides students at member institutions with millions of full text resources to support their studies. The LIRN technical team can also provide consulting and other electronic services. LIRN has almost 200 member schools at over 700 locations in the US and abroad. LIRN’s headquarters are in Largo, Florida and our gateway servers are housed in a commercial data center in Tampa, Florida. Members and friends may join LIRN teleconferences, which are typically normally held 10-11 a.m. ET on the last Thursday of the month. The LIRN annual business meeting is held in the spring. LIRN AUTHENTICATION GATEWAY, ADMINISTRATIVE CONSOLE & USAGE REPORTS LIRN provides a customizable access page for your school and an administrative console that allows you to run LIRN Access Reports, Subscription Services Reports, and Search Statistics Reports. You can also run Gale Customer Reports for your school. LIRNsearch® LIRNsearch® is a proprietary federated search engine that allows members to search across all or selected LIRN resources. LIRNtitles® LIRNtitles® allows researchers to locate and link to publication titles in LIRN databases. TRUSTED LIRN CONNECTION LIRN can provide school’s with a trusted connection to LIRN resources to post on password protected sites. INTERNET RESOURCES The LIRN Core Collection includes several high-quality resources on the Web, including Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Internet Public Library, and PUBMED. All three are all searchable as part of LIRNsearch®. OPTIONAL LIRN PRODUCTS & SERVICES PROXY HOSTING A LIRN hosted proxy runs on a dedicated virtual server and includes a unique IP address and a customer specific server name in the lirn.net domain. Each proxy server supports SSL security for user authentication and for database products that require HTTPS connections. The LIRN Tech Team will do the implementation, manage the server and product configurations, and provide support and maintenance. BOWKER’S BOOK ANALYSIS SYSTEM Rather than doing a title by title look up, this system allows libraries to upload their MARC records and compare their collection against Resources for College Libraries for purposes of assessment, acquisitions, or weeding.
