TRANSFER CURRICULUM GUIDE Long Beach City College ============================================================================================ ENGLISH CAREER INFORMATION English is the study of the written word and involves the study of literature and writing. The curriculum in English is designed to help the student acquire an understanding of literary heritage, develop an appreciation of language, and strengthen communication skills. Academic coursework for an English major should consist of contemporary American literature, modern poetry, medieval studies, Shakespeare, playwriting, creative writing, linguistics, strong communication and persuasion skills, and command of grammar and vocabulary. A bachelor’s degree in English provides a student with skills for a variety of positions in business, research organizations, education, publishing and financial institutions. Some of the career opportunities include advertising, bank officer, editor, financial planner, freelance writer, teacher, journalist, public relations specialist, and speechwriter. Salaries vary widely depending on the field you choose to work in, but professors earn an average salary of $51,000, while some top-level professors earn in excess of $100,000.
