FEBRUARY 2005 Volume XXIII No. IV THE TALON By Ariel Elias Staff Writer Around roughly 12,000 years BC, tattooing has existed. Some of the earliest tattoos were originally found in Egypt and spread to civilizations in Greece, Arabia, Persia, China, and Crete. The roles tattoos play vary among everyone who has one (or more than one, for that matter). Example: For women in Borneo, tattoos play a role of tradition in which their specific skills are symbolized on their arms and their chances of marrying off increase depending on the skills they have. PRINCIPAL'S CORNER Dear Falcons: It’s hard to believe there are only 5 more weeks in this quarter, but the time has arrived. By now, many of you have already taken the written portion of the FCAT and in just two weeks the remainder of the test will be here. I cannot stress to you enough how important it is for you to do well on this test. Not just for us here at “The Hill” but for yourselves. Passing the FCAT is required for graduation and can also determine your electives for next year. Since we’re talking about schedules I’d like to talk about the late start for next year. Three years ago I developed a schedule that would start school at 8:30am and would have students leaving school only 15 minutes later than now. That is the extent of the changes I have proposed. That would still allow ample time for after school clubs, sports, and jobs. Because of the recent decision by the School Forest Hill High School District to pilot the late start school day at both here and Boca Raton High we will now be allowed to look at this proposal and see if it works. I wish all of you the best of luck with the upcoming test. I know that the wonderful teachers we have here at Forest Hill have done an amazing job in preparing you. I can’t think of another school where the teachers are better qualified to get you ready not only for the FCAT, but for life after high school. Sincerely, Mayra Stafford. minor was due to the painful procedure that came along with getting even a simple marking (since the punctures were all done by hand) but thankfully, Samuel O’Reilly patented the first electric tattooing machine in 1891. loud and obvious. Tattoos can be just meaningless designs of body art or as in ancient times, they can represent significant events in a person’s life. Many people get tattoos in memory of a relative, friend, or idol that has died, whereas other tattoos can be of animals, zodiac signs, names, and pretty much anything one can think of. In general it’s all about preference and style. Though the one thing that all inked-up people have in common is the fact that 50 years from now, their tattoos won’t look as awesome as they do today, but at least they all get to express their individuality in a unique and original way. One grows out of that kind of belief when Santa Claus or the Easter Bunny is no longer real to them. But what if fairies do exist? What if they’re not just a childhood fantasy? If fairies didn’t exist, how would we know so much about them, and if one person made them all up they have a very good imagination. Many people believe in fairies. It is a belief that they are magical creatures that live in forest trees in a world parallel to our own, they don’t like to be seen by mortals and can become invisible when humans are nearby. You may be thinking, “Fairies aren’t real,” think what you want, it doesn’t change what others believe. Some might think that fairies are not real because they can’t see them. Well, we can’t see the wind, so does that mean it’s not there? NO. THE CASE OF THE COTTINGLEY FAIRIES In 1916, Frances Griffiths and Elsie Wright, two young girls living in Cottingley, produced the most famous fairy pictures in Britain which are still talked about today. The first picture showed Frances with the fairies. Many people teased them about their story of seeing the fairies. So they wanted to get more proof. Elsie borrowed her father’s camera and they went back to where they saw the fairies. When they returned, they had more proof of their existence. But still nobody believed them. Elsie’s father considered them to be pranks. To make a long story short, the photographs continue to mystify and fascinate the world. They mystery still lives on with many people still believing that the Cottingley fairies existed. You can actually see the pictures that these girls took if you go online and look up The Case of the Cottingley Fairies. This which is a true story is proof that fairies in fact do exist. If you haven’t met Mr. Winkler yet, you will eventually. He teaches health, which is a required course to graduate. He has also taught health and Drivers Education. He was born on April 10th, 1945 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (in a hospital). He has taught at Forest Hill all his life except for summers and when he was a kid. He attended the University of Florida and received a Master’s degree in Physical Education and Health. Before college, he went to Forest Hill High School. That's right, he's a native Falcon. He is married, but has no children. However, he has 3 dogs and 2 cats which he says is equivalent to at least 4 one child. He loves his job and wouldn’t change it even if he could. He loves helping people and enjoys it everyday. He says the best thing about teaching is being able to help better kids’ lives. The craziest thing that has ever happened to him while teaching was about 13 years ago when the portable next to his burned half down to the ground during school. In his past, he was in the Olympics for team handball (see last month's Talon for more information about his Olympic experience), he was a scuba diver, and a marathon runner. Since he hurt his back in 1984, he hasn’t been able to do any of those things. Instead, he has become a gardener and has his own vegetable garden. He has been to 32 different countries, but has never gone out of his mind. “Germany has good beer, they all have good cheese, and I could eat my way around the world!” 5 The Falco ENGLISH Tuesdays at the Hill Continues in Februrary for all our Forest Hill parents and guardians who wish to reinforce their children’s education and learning skills. Teen pregnancy is every parents worst nightmare become reality. It’s no secret that the average teen has sex on their mind. Even though not every teen is having sex and becoming pregnant at a young age, but two out of every five American teen is becoming pregnant before the age of 18. Yes, having a baby is wonderful but should children really be raising children? The answer is no. Teens should not have to worry about waking up in the middle of the night because their baby is screaming at the top of their lungs the day before a final exam. We should worry about going to Homecoming, or worry about what you’re going to wear for Prom; worrying about how your two-year old is going to be potty trained before their third birthday shouldn’t be something on your mind ( well not yet at least). The average age of American teens to start having sex is 16. We all know that kids as young as 13 are having sex. How can we stop teens from getting pregnant? We can’t stop a teenager from having sex or getting pregnant because if we are determined enough to have sex, we eventually will no matter what rules are put on us. If you honestly think about it not every girl by the time they turn 16 can be put on birth control. For Hispanic Americans three out of five teens are having children before the age of 18. That’s 60 percent of the Hispanic population that are having kids and they aren’t even old enough to drink yet. With the high rates of teen pregnancy is also causing for an even higher drop out rate in high school students. Some teens see their parents fault for getting pregnant but their parents fault, the media’s fault and the school’s fault. Every high school student in America takes health as a class because it’s a requirement for graduation. Do the health classes in high school really inform us about teen pregnancy? Not really, they are more focused on informing us about how we can avoid contracting an STD or HIV/AIDS. Yes, being well informed about STD’s and HIV/ AIDS is important but why are the schools so quiet when it comes to teen pregnancy? We should all know that having a baby isn’t just about dressing them up in cute outfits but it’s mostly about being their for your child when they need you wether it’s because they fell and scraped their knee or if they just need help with their homework. Just having your High School Diploma isn’t going to get you a job with benefits but it can get you a job that can help you and your child survive. There are a lot of people out there that don’t have kids but they have a High School Diploma and it’s not easy for them. Think about it like this babies aren’t toys that you can throw away when your bored or or parent try and keep a home together and their job and its hard for them and they are twice our age, so imagine how difficult it is for a teen to go to school have a parttime job, and have a baby all at the sam time. It sounds almost impossible but there are a lot of girls and guys out there that don’t have any help from their parents or the child’s other parent. On the Lifetime Network they always have a movie about teen pregnancy. They are just movies but believe it or not some of our peers in FHHS are going through that hardship right now as you read this article. Some adults that don’t have any children frown upon their peers who have a daughter that is pregnant, or even have a son who got their girlfriend pregnant. If a 15 year old girl is pregnant of course we are going to pass some sort of judgement on her, but why is it because she is only 15 and knows absolutely nothing about raising baby or is it because a part of us feels bad for her knowing that it is going to be that much harder for her to get through life. So far only the girl is being mentioned as the one to blame for getting pregnant but what about the guy, obviously without him she wouldn’t be in this particular situation but shouldn’t he get blamed just as much as she is? In our society if a guy gets a girl pregnant his life isn’t “over” like her’s is but why is that? I guess it’s because he doesn’t have to worry about waking up in the middle of the night to change the baby’s diaper or to feed the baby. Some guys do take on a lot of responsibility and the girl is the one that isn’t in the picture. It’s just a matter of perspective. It’s not only the teens tired of them, they are stuck with you forever and they are probably the best thing that will ever happen to you, but wouldn’t you really want to experience that wonderful feeling when you have a better understanding of who you really are as a person? Babies deserve to live a happy and carefree life for as long as possible, just like the teens who are parents now should be doing not helping their kid with their homework when they are trying to finish theirs. For the teens that haven’t been pregnant or haven’t had sex yet, think about it first. Not only do you have to worry about contracting a STD or HIV/ AIDS from your partner you also have to think about what could happen if you miss taking your pill for a day or when the condom breaks. Do you really want to be one of the teens that misses their high school prom because you were in the delivery room that night. Be smart and think about the different approaches to having a baby and the different outcomes. If you’re a girl don’t always think that your boyfriend is going to be there for you and if you’re a guy don’t always let your girlfriend do everything for that baby, you both made him/ her together so you should share the responsibilities. Happy Valentine's Day from Exchange Club Come get involved today 8 Meet Marcos By Anjuli Rivera Staff Writer Marcos Hernandez some of you may have heard of him, and some of you may not. At first I didn’t know who he was either until I heard his song If You Were Mine. This song says everything a girl want’s to hear. It’s sweet and romantic and it doesn’t hurt that the guy singing the song is gorgeous. Let me tell you a little bit about Marcos Hernandez. He’s 23yrs old, he was born in Phoenix, but he was raised in Dallas, Texas. When he was 12 his parents gave him a choice between playing football or following his music career. When he was in junior high he joined his school choir and that is where he began his vocal training. He took up vocal lessons for 5 years. He had a vocal coach and a voice teacher both taught him how to sing and what to sing. Marcos created his own style of music by listening to different styles of music and a variety of artists. Some of these different styles of music range from Mariachi because of his Latin background and the Motown artists. The Motown artists he was inspired by the most were The Temptations and The Platters. He loved to entertain people so every chance he got he would perform. With his love for the stage and the “practice” he had from performing in front of a live audience prepared him for a local radio station contest. Joining the contest he had the opportunity to join a boy band that was based in Dallas called Sons of Harmony. Even though his membership in the band only lasted two years he gained a lot of experience. He toured with artists like 98 Degrees, Jessica Simpson, Pink, and Jon Bon Jovi. Sons of Harmony also toured with Destiny’s Child and opened for them. Marcos Hernandez made a name for himself and now he has an album out "C About Me" is gaining a lot of attention, especially from young females. His hit single If You Were Mine was produced by Eliot Sloan, Robi Menace, and Wayne Stalling is go up the Billboard charts. This song is just a taste of what else is to come from this handsome and versatile artists. Marcos Hernandez is one of the artists to see in 2006. Movie Reviews By Sandra Supinger Staff Writer By Justin Eggen Staff writer “Happiness is just down the road?” Well, for the Underdog Texas Western Basketball players in “Glory Road,” happiness isn’t a choice. In the beginning, the team struggles for happiness to win games, and also for the support of the “fans.” This is why basketball today is an important sport to many fans, especially for the family of the players, but in the 1960’s, many people didn’t agree on seeing blacks and whites play on the same team. Evolution starts off right where the first movie left off, explaining the history of the war between the two brothers, Marcus, a vampire and William, a lycan. As the war between the two brothers continues for centuries, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) is on the run for the murder of the elder, Victor, from the first movie. Michael (Scott Speedman) a hybrid-half breed, lycan/vampire tags along as the only person Selene can trust. Michael, in this movie has a bigger role as one of the main characters along with Selene. Based on a true story, “Glory Road” can be a sad, yet thrilling movie, with an effective climax towards the end, making it a mustsee movie. “Glory Road” tells an inspiring, Rated-R, true story of the Texas Western basketball team, with histories first all AfricanAmerican Team. In 1966, Texas Western Coach Don Haskins (Josh*Joshua*Lucas) led the first all black and white starting lineup for the college basketball team to the NCAA National Championship, taking the Country by surprise. Josh Lucas is a passionately dedicated Coach that changed the history of basketball with his team’s victory, in the time of innocence. As a well actor, Lucas also starred in “Sweet Home Alabama,” and “A Beautiful Mind.” Three other main characters in “Glory Road”: Derek Luke, Tatyana Ali, and Austin Nicholas. It’s people like this that make basketball happen. Don’t get me wrong Falcons, you guys are great at basketball, but until you see this inspiring movie, you won’t know where basketball really came from, and how it got its true meaning. So if you want to know where basketball really came from and when it became a real sport, it was in the 1960’s. Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Directed by James Gartner, written by Christopher Cleveland, Bethna Gilnis and Gregory Allen Howard. Buena Vista Productions. So next time at a movie theater, when you’re in line thinking about what movie you should see, make sure you tell em’ “Glory Road.” You won’t regret it. 9 As the story continues it gets more in depth with Selene’s character searching for the answer for why her parents where murdered, and having flashbacks of her past. While Selene and Michael are on the run doing their own thing, Marcus awakens from the grave; he searches for the key to his brothers’ tomb to start a new race of super beings to end all humanity. Michael carries a medallion, not knowing it is in fact, the key Marcus searches for. As Marcus ruthlessly searches for the key killing whoever is in the way, he’s going to have some trouble trying to get it from Michael and Selene. As the movie progresses there’s a steamy sex scene and a lot of killing, blood, and brutality that add to this non-stop action flick. If you are a fan of Kate Beckinsale in a tight leather outfit, you must spend your well earned money to see Evolution. Having already covered the Falcon’s outlook for the season in last weeks issue, I return now to address a team poised to win about as many games as our own Falcons will. The Florida Marlins are coming off one of the largest fire sales in major league history this offseason, having jettisoned almost their entire starting lineup and pitching rotation from last years team that some experts predicted to win the National League Eastern Division at the beginning of the season. Gone are the likes of Carlos Delgado, Mike Lowell, Paul LoDuca, A.J. Burnett, Josh Beckett, and Juan Pierre. The Marlins now only return outfield/infielder Miguel Cabrera, who has been dubbed by many as the next Manny Ramirez, but with better skills in the field, and pitcher Dontrelle Willis, who was a 20 game winner and an All-Star last season. The Marlins received many top prospects in return from trading their former players, including former Red Sox top prospect, shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who could start this year for the Marlins at shortstop. In terms of the rotation, only Willis is a proven starter, as the rest of the rotation will be made up by a collection of players with little or no major league experience, or league journeymen. The lineup also looks week, with Cabrera the only one providing punch in an otherwise punch-less lineup of rookies, drifters, and no names. The most mind boggling thing about the Marlins fire sale was the fact that they traded some of their more prominent players to teams in their own division, such as Carlos Delgado now going to the Mets, who will vie for the National League Eastern Division crown this year. In response to the second fire sale of this team in under 10 years, I have renounced my allegiance to the Marlins, and now will root against them in any game. My thinking is, if they cannot show the fans of South Florida loyalty during times of hardship, then they deserve none from their fans either. This year, the Marlins will Two-time All-Star Dontrelle Willis leads a rebuilt roster into Spring Training. (Luis M. Alvarez/AP) have an entirely different look at Roger Dean Stadium, where they play their spring training games, and one wonders just how many fans will show up to support a team that has sold out on its fans not once, but TWICE, despite winning two World Series rings. In predictions this year, I see the Cardinals once again winning the National League crown and returning to the World Series, to be met not by the White Sox, but by the Boston Red Sox once again, thanks to the new additions of some former MARLINS, and the continued mashing of Manny Ramirez, possibly the strangest person in sports today. In a series of red, the Cardinals prevail this time, their potent lineup finally firing on all cylinders in the playoffs, and Mark Mulder pitching twice and shutting down the Sox. So, if you’re a Marlins fan, find another team to root for this year, because sadly, your team will be down and out of the playoffs halfway through the summer. As for me, go Tigers!
