SPRING 2011 The A Edge NEWSLETTER OF THE NBSTSA New Year’s Resolution You Can Achieve A new year has always been a time for reflection. More importantly, it is a time in which we can make positive changes in our personal lives. For many of us, we continue to make the same resolutions year after year, with marginal success. Have you ever thought about making a resolution regarding your professional credentials? I challenge all of you who are not certified as either a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or a Certified Surgical First Assistant (CSFA) to become certified in your area by the end of this year. For those of you who are certified, take the necessary steps to maintain your certification. List your obstacles to certification and seek ways to overcome them. I heard one of the major reasons for not being certified is by not having the financial resources for either taking the exam or maintaining the Continuing Education (CE) credits. I ask you, how can you not afford it? Certification can lead to increased salary, job security, marketability, advancement in the profession, feelings of personal accomplishment, professional growth, and credibility to you as a professional from your peers and other surgical team members. Perhaps most importantly, it lends itself to a higher level of competency in the surgical field. Examine your personal expenses and see where you can save money for your certification or CE credits. Investigate if your employer will reimburse you for certification or for CE credits. Another common obstacle is test anxiety. There are many study guides that are available. If you do not have the financial resources to purchase one, then borrow one from a peer, go to a library, or look to purchase a used study guide. Form a study group with others who have decided to make certification their resolution as well. In addition, the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) offer practice exams for a nominal fee. The more prepared you are the more successful you will be. Not having the time to study for the exam or attend CE credit seminars is another obstacle frequently cited. Evaluate your time. Can you study during work breaks? If you take public transportation, can you study on the train or bus? Ask your family and friends for their support in assisting you with studying. Develop flashcards and have them ask you questions. Have you explored any online CE credit programs approved by the Association of Surgical Technologists (AST)? Does your facility offer in-services where you could earn CE credits? If you are a member of AST, often there are free CE credits that can be applied to maintaining your certification. If you have the time and resources, I encourage you to attend the AST national conference. Don’t let these or any other obstacles become the reason(s) why you do not become certi- In This Issue President’s Message CEO’s Corner From Your Surgical Colleague 1 2 3 News Specific to Our CSFA Community 4 NBSTSA Nuggets 4 Students Speak Out 5 School Recognition 8 Volunteer Recognition 11 fied. Look for ways in which you can obtain or maintain certification rather than being satisfied with reasons why you cannot. You owe it to yourself as well as to the surgical patients you serve. I am making a commitment to anyone who takes on the resolution to become or maintain certification, that if he/she has an obstacle and needs assistance in finding ways to overcome them, I will assist you in achieving your goal. While I cannot guarantee success in overcoming every obstacle that may be presented to me, I will make every effort to assist each and every one of you who reach out to me. You can correspond with me by contacting the NBSTSA. I also challenge all of you who are certified that if someone asks for your assistance with their resolution, please take the time to assist them. Obtaining and maintaining your National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certification is both personally and professionally rewarding. Successful achievement of these New Year’s resolutions is well within your reach. Wishing you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year. (As a side note, NBSTSA stands ready in 2011 to visit more states upon request. Have your state Board of Directors call the NBSTSA to schedule.) However, I digress from what I wanted to talk about, so I’ll get started. Nope, not true that the NBSTSA Board of Directors write the examinations while having pizza with each other on Saturday nights. Many of the people I met at those meetings said the same thing to me after the presentation. They said, “I had no idea what went into the development of the CST or CSFA examination”. That got me thinking. Why not spread the word, share how we come up with the examinations with as many of our CSTs and CSFAs as possible? One of the most rewarding parts of my job at the NBSTSA is the opportunity to meet our CSTs and CSFAs at various meetings throughout the year. In 2010, I had the privilege of not only attending the AST Annual Conference held in Grapevine, Texas, but a number of state assembly meetings as well. Many thanks to the Board of Directors of the great states of California, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Texas for inviting NBSTSA to attend and/or speak at their state meetings in 2010. What a great opportunity to meet a lot of terrific people while at the same time talking about a terrific subject, the importance of certification in the work- Nope, not true that the NBSTSA Board of Directors write the examinations while having pizza with each other on Saturday nights. Examination development is a long and protracted process to assure that the CST and CSFA examinations are true reflections of surgical practice, literally involving thousands of individuals. In short they are you, our CSTs and CSFAs. NBSTSA examination programs are fully accredited through the National Commission for Certifying Agencies, or NCCA. The NCCA is a standardsdriven organization that accredits examination programs (like the CST and CSFA) in organizations that meet the established standards of the NCCA. Standards are dealt with every day in the operating room. The instruments used, the implants going into your patients, medications used in anesthesia, are all manufactured according to standards of quality defined by any number of organizations. Standards assure quality in every aspect of surgical patient care. Why would surgical staff credentialing not be subject to the same process? There are literally thousands of credentialing examinations sponsored by an equal number of organizations in the United States, yet only a small percentage have acquired NCCA accreditation. In the professions of surgical technology and surgical first assisting for allied health professionals like you, there is only one organization that has made the commitment to standardsbased examination development. Yes, it’s true. That is the NBSTSA. Congratulations, you have committed to the best possible measurement of professional credentialing competency in your professional area. Stay tuned for the next installment of “How do they come up with this stuff?”, or the development of a professional credential. It’s heart-pounding excitement to be sure; so if you simply can’t wait for the next installment I encourage you to call me for the next chapter. I would be happy to give away the ending. By the way, Happy New Year and best wishes for a terrific 2011. I look forward to seeing all of you at your various state meetings, or better yet, at the AST national conference. Ron Kruzel, CST, MA Chief Executive Officer NBSTSA A Word From Your Surgical Colleague You are an important part of what I do... Hello. My name is Constantine Godellas, but people call me Dean, Dr. Dean, hey you, or Dad; I respond to most anything. I am the new representative to the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting from the American College of Surgeons (ACS). You probably remember Dr. Virginia (Ginny) Herrmann who served last year on the NBSTSA. I have taken Ginny’s place as the ACS representative. I’m a surgical oncologist at Loyola University in Maywood, Illinois, which is a suburb of Chicago. Born and raised in the Chicago area, I went to undergrad and medical school at Northwestern, and then did my residency in general surgery at the University of South Florida in Tampa. (I know all of you in the cold northern states right now are thinking I must be crazy for moving back to Chicago.) Then I completed a two-year fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York, and moved back to Chicago 14 years ago and have NCCA Accreditation The National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) was created in 1987 to help ensure the health, welfare, and safety of the public through the accreditation of certification programs and organizations that assess professional competence. Certification programs that receive NCCA Accreditation demonstrate compliance with the NCCA’s Standards for the Accreditation of Certification Programs, which were the first standards for professional certification programs developed by the NC The NBSTSA has the only NCCA industry. I am married to a wonderful woman named Erin. We have four great kids (OK, I am a little biased) named Helena (7.5), William (6), Christopher (4.5), and Georgia (2). So now that you know who I am, you are probably wondering why I am the new ACS representative on the NBSTSA board. Good question. About 10 years ago I became a member of the ACS Committee on Allied Health Professionals. Soon after, I was appointed to the Accreditation Review Committee on Education in Sur- It always raises eyebrows when I approach a technologist I haven’t yet met, and ask where they went to school, if they are a member of AST and if they are certified. gical Technology (ARC-ST) (currently the ARC/STSA, and by the way the NBSTSA at the time was known as the LCC-ST). I served on the ARC for consecutive threeyear terms. Although as a surgeon I was obviously familiar with surgical technologists, during my tenure on the ARC I became much more knowledgeable about their profession. Since that time, I have become a champion in my own hospital for not only surgical technologists and surgical first assistants, but also encouraged them to become certified. It always raises eyebrows when I approach a technologist I haven’t yet met, and ask where they went to school, if they are a member of AST and if they are certified. Recently, I became the Chairman of the Committee on Allied Health Professionals. This committee sends two representatives to the ARC/STSA and one to the NBSTSA. Our committee acts as a liaison between the various allied health professions (mainly surgical technologists, surgical first assistants, and physician assistants) and the ACS. We also present panels at the ACS Annual Meeting, which deals with how the allied health professions interact with surgeons, residents, and students. Over the next three years, I look forward to working with my fellow NBSTSA Board Members to maintain the highest standards set by this organization. I also welcome the opportunity to be more involved with surgical technologists and surgical first assistants. You are a very important part of what I do each and every day. I look forward to learning more about your fields from a different perspective, and contributing in any way I can. Constantine “Dean” Godellas, MD NBSTSA CST and CSFA Practice Examinations Administered through AMP, the CST and CSFA online Practice Examinations were developed using the same procedures as the actual examinations. The Practice Examinations are an excellent study tool for test candidates, credentialed practitioners, students, or anyone and everyone interested in evaluating their knowledge related to the CST and CSFA Examinations. Cost is $40. Click the Practice Examination link today (upper right corner of the Home Page on the NBSTSA website) at www.ntsbsa.org. please note Utilization of either practice examination does not guarantee a successful outcome on the National CST or CSFA Examination. The NBSTSA added 61 schools to their list of participants bringing the number of schools offering the CST exam on campus to 342 total. As the NBSTSA moves forward and continues to grow, we hope we will continue to have the opportunity to work with all of you. So to all the program directors, clinical coordinators, and deans that have helped make the on-campus CST exam a success, we send our sincerest thanks.
