Various relevant handouts, readings and video clips will be provided by the instructor.
Historic films and documentaries will be shown throughout the course, some in full and others as clips. The parental ratings on these will run up through PG-13. Videos shown will be of historical importance and may contain culturally relevant nudity. Parents and students will be notified of any films which exceed the afore mentioned rating and given the choice to opt-out for an alternative assignment.
Clean Clips
Creative Writing
Students will be shown a variety of so-called “Clean Clips” from historical films. Clean clips are scenes from movies that are historically relevant and help to illustrate key concepts to students. An example of this may be a short overhead scene that shows the complexity of trench warfare in WWI.
These clips are interspersed throughout the course and may come from movies that are rated R, but do not contain the nudity or violence that cause the film to receive this rating.
The instructor retains the right to add historically relevant clips without notice.

These clips are interspersed throughout the course and may come from movies that are rated R, but do not contain the nudity or violence that cause the film to receive this rating.

Textbook Resources
Introduction to Science
Current events in the news (topics may include abortion rights, gun control, and marriage equality), the Federalist,
Constitutional resources from the Annenberg Foundation, selected readings from Noam Chomsky on media, projectcensored.org, other news media, newscasts and shows, the NYTimes, and other relevant resources.
Additional Resources and Activities:
Current Events: Current events are a crucial part of making the study of U.S. Government and American political systems relative. They connect to our history and everyday lives.
Each week, students will be required to submit a short analysis of a news event that is relevant to the topic we are covering at that time. Students must be able to describe why the event is important and how it relates to government. Students will have opportunities to present their findings periodically throughout the year.
Issue Analysis: In order to foster analytical skills and political dialogue, students will be asked to read and discuss opposing viewpoints on various topics germane to each unit. Each of these 2-day sessions will begin with an inquirybased examination of a leading issue in American politics and government, such as “Should the Senate filibuster be abolished?” Students will either compare and contrast various perspectives, or divide into groups and work together to support one side or another. In this way, students will have an opportunity to consider and analyze critical questions surrounding American government.
Graphs, Maps, and Charts: Students will be tested on their understanding of quantitative and visually presented information (maps and graphs) at regular intervals in the quizzes and exams. Students will also be presented with various charts in lectures and supplemental readings and will be assessed at frequent intervals.
AP Supplemental Materials: Students will be given photocopies of Free Response Questions (FRQs) and Multiple
Choice Questions from prior AP exams or similar to those found the on the AP exams.
