ANNUAL REPORT 2014 | 2015 Saint John Regional Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Always on. Always awake. Here, for You. 2 Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation A letter from our Chair & CEO We are very proud to share the highlights of another tremendous year at the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation. Over and over, you have shown that your generosity plays a critical role in the success of health care in our region. As you read the stories and information on the following pages, please know YOU made this happen. And your investment in health care couldn’t come at a more critical time. Our community is aware of the challenges facing our health care system. However, as individuals, we are also aware of the stories of incredible care provided by the health care professionals here at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Just like you, both of our families have had our share of broken bones, babies who arrived too early, heart by-pass surgery and, unfortunately, cancer diagnosis and treatment. Our parents, children, wives and friends have been touched by the care of the New Brunswick Heart Centre, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Emergency Department, the Outpatient Clinic, the Oncology Department and the list goes on. We are both incredibly grateful to have a hospital that is: “Always on. Always awake. Here, for you.” The fact that this hospital has impacted both of our lives so personally just adds additional fuel to our resolve of growing and shaping the Foundation – YOUR Foundation – to ensure that you can continue to enhance this great hospital through philanthropy. Although on the surface you may have recognized some changes at our Foundation, our purpose remains the same. We’re here because of your generosity – just as we always have been. Together, we will continue to transform local health care. With sincere gratitude, Jason Downey, Chair Jeff McAloon, CEO 2014 | 2015 Annual Report 3 Our Board of Directors Jason Downey – Chair Steve Titus – Vice Chair A heart-felt thank you goes out to our dedicated board of directors, who continue to lead the work of our Foundation with vision and generosity. When you donate to the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation, your dollars go directly to caring for your family, friends and neighbours. Your money stays here in New Brunswick and is directed to the area of health care that is most important to you. You can direct your gift to a particular hospital department or program that’s close to your heart. Or, you can choose to let us direct your gift to the area of highest and most urgent need. Your gifts touch lives and bring our patients comfort when they are most vulnerable. Help ensure our hospital is always here for you and your family. sjrhf.ca 2014 | 2015 Annual Report 5 So many reasons to GIVE The GIVE campaign is our annual province-wide fundraising effort to support excellence and innovation in health care equipment, mental health, research, education and patient comfort at the Saint John Regional Hospital. While past campaigns focused on fundraising for one particular area of the hospital or equipment investments, we are now excited to tell the story of how support from donors impacts all areas of care at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Each year, donations help: • Purchase urgently needed medical equipment • Fund research that directly affects patient care •Ensure doctors and clinical staff are up to date on the most important advances in medicine and patient care •Fund mental health programs and research across the province • Provide patients with better comfort Help make sure our hospital is always on, always awake – here for you when you need it most Over the years, we’ve heard countless stories from grateful patients, who have received world-class – and often life-saving – treatment at our Saint John Regional Hospital. Support from our donors makes this high quality care possible. Thank you for your generosity. How has our hospital been here for you? Are you a grateful patient? Tell us your story. Share your story on our Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation Facebook page or write to us at SJRH.Foundation@HorizonNB.ca. We’d love to hear how our hospital was here for you. theGIVE.ca Dr. Todd Chedore, Anesthesiologist 6 Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation 2014-2015 campaign highlights Personalized medicine – it’s about time Capital Equipment A community rally toward faster cancer test results, targeted care & better patient outcomes In February 2014, our Foundation launched the GIVE 2014 – Personalized Medicine, a campaign to raise and donate $900,000 for state-of-theart equipment that will allow our hospital’s laboratory to identify and diagnose cancers on-site. Many of our current cancer pathology tests are sent off-site. This new equipment will lower costs and reduce delays in diagnosis and treatment, saving patients precious time. We received donations from all over the province, and thanks to the generosity of our great community of donors, the GIVE 2014 surpassed the $900,000 target. We’d like to extend a very special note of thanks to the John T. McMillan Jr. Memorial Foundation, the Dowd Family and Dowd Roofing, and our campaign hero Gwenn Bartlett and her family for their generous support of the GIVE 2014. The laboratory is often the unsung hero of the hospital. At the Saint John Regional Hospital, more than 200 laboratory doctors and technologists work behind-the-scenes to provide the information needed to treat patients. The molecular medicine program at the Saint John Regional Hospital has been in development since 2005. It’s crucial work. And it needs our support. Hospital Home Lottery We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the thousands of New Brunswickers who helped make our 2014 Hospital Home Lottery another successful sell out. Our 3rd Annual Love Your Hospital Radiothon raised $179,980 for the GIVE 2014 Proceeds from our 2014 lottery were over $1,000,000 and are directed to the area of highest and most urgent need within our hospital to support the health and well-being of all New Brunswickers. Employee Giving A big thank you to the many generous hospital staff that support our Foundation. Our health care staff value our hospital, and want to ensure it continues to deliver leading-edge care to our entire province. That’s why many have chosen to make regular contributions to our Foundation through payroll deduction. Together, we all support excellence and innovation in all areas of health care. Moira O’Shea, Medical Laboratory Assistant theGIVE.ca 2014 | 2015 Annual Report 7 Support for those who need it most – in body and mind The impact of a breast cancer diagnosis reaches far beyond the physical. During treatment, so much of a patient’s energy is focused on their physical health that their mental and spiritual needs can be overlooked. That’s why Horizon Health Network created a 12-week Breast Cancer Survivorship Program, a multi-disciplinary program that increases awareness of breast cancer patients’ mental health as they move through treatment phases. Dr. Margot Burnell is the Clinical Department Head of our hospital’s Oncology Department. She says the survivorship program takes a holistic approach to addressing patients’ needs by providing educational sessions on nutrition, physiotherapy, spirituality, sexuality and psychological discussions about the impact of malignancy – all areas that patients and their advocates indicate are gaps in the treatment process. “Survivorship begins the moment a patient is diagnosed and is an ongoing process from that day forward,” she said. “Diagnosis not only impacts the lives of patients, but also those around them – family, friends, colleagues, care providers – due to changes in roles and routines, as well as their anxiety and concern for their loved ones.” Dr. Burnell explained that for patients dealing with breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, it can be difficult to get back to a normal lifestyle. And that’s exactly what this program aims to help them do. “For patients, the stress is extreme,” she said. “They’re not only concerned about how they will physically respond to their treatments, but also a number of practical, everyday necessities like child care, house cleaning, missed work, out-of-pocket expenses and more. Psychologically, they are no longer as independent as they were before the diagnosis – partners and family members must step up to care for them. They’re dealing with a change of body image – potentially losing hair and going through a mastectomy – it’s a very emotional time.” The program also involves a screening process to assess what tools can be used to address patients’ mental health needs. Next, because studies have shown that many patients who undergo physiotherapy during treatments benefit from the physical activity and feel better, the program involves a physiotherapy component through the YMCA. Learn more at sjrhf.ca/mental-wellness. Mental Wellness “The feedback to date has been excellent,” Dr. Burnell said. “What began as a pilot program for breast cancer patients is now being rolled out to other oncology patients.” Thanks to $107,000 in funding from MindCare, they’re now collecting the results they need to make the program sustainable. Dr. Burnell thanks MindCare for helping to take the program to the next level. “I’ve been in this business for a long time and it’s very rewarding to see how patients are reacting to this program,” she said. “These patients are very courageous and brave. Sometimes they just need help with the next step of their treatment, so it means a lot if we can be a part of providing that support.” Healthy minds. Healthy lives. This year, our Foundation’s MindCare New Brunswick granted a total of $357,000 in funding for mental health programing throughout the province of New Brunswick. •Professional Development - $100,000 •Breast Health Survivorship Program – $107,000 •10 Therapeutic Programs in Saint John, Fredericton, Moncton and Sussex totaling – $150,000 MindCare is a committee of the Board of Directors of the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation and is a major funder of provincial mental health initiatives in New Brunswick. Dr. Margot Burnell 8 Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation Our “Journey to Becoming Truly Patient Centered” Supporting professional and personal development for those at the heart of health care A nurse’s job is multi-faceted. They are both the lead clinical caregiver and the main point of contact for families and caregivers. It’s a fundamental and challenging role – one that often goes uncelebrated. But thanks to the support of our Foundation and a committed team of volunteers, 170 nurses from the Saint John Regional Hospital came together for two days of networking and learning about one of our hospital’s new strategic directions: the journey toward patient centered care. Brenda Kinney is Executive Director of the Saint John Area with Horizon Health Network. “Patient centered care is one of Horizon’s strategic directions over the next five years,” Brenda said. “We as nurses think that we provide patient centered care, and that we’re advocates for patients, but we’re in a different climate now with different expectations from patients and families. A lot of our processes are actually provider centered, so there are certainly things we can do to further incorporate the patient and their family into the care.” Sue Ness has a long history with Horizon Health Network, once serving as Executive Director of Region 2 in Moncton. Education She was hired as lead facilitator of the “Our Journey to Becoming Truly Patient Centered” conference. “One participant in the conference said it best in their evaluation: that patient centered care is not a project – it’s a way of being,” Sue said. “When you’re a professional providing care, you’re busy with lots of tasks – from documentation to procedures and treatments – so we tried to increase the understanding of what it looks like from the other side of the bed rest.” Sue says that part of the new reality nurses face is the abundance of information now available to patients, largely thanks to technology and the internet. “Health care providers are expected to be on top of best practices, and translating all of that information and research into how we care for patients is a new expectation,” she said. Of the conference’s 120 participants who completed the post-conference survey, 100% gave a positive response. 25% of participants described the experience as “very good” while 75% said it was “excellent.” Rosanne Thorne is our hospital’s Nurse Manager with Internal Medicine. “One participant said thank you for the past two days, because it reminded her why she became a nurse,” she said. “Everyone who attended those two days felt valued as a nurse, as an employee, because we had acknowledged them for what they were already bringing to the workplace. And it wouldn’t have happened without the generosity of the Foundation.” “Any nurse naturally puts the patient at the forefront,” said Patti Gallagher, a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Neurosciences. “The key part is to acknowledge that for the nurses that are present, these values are near and dear to their hearts. This conference was an opportunity for them to share and shine – it was nourishment for their nursing souls. It reinvigorated them.” Learn more at sjrhf.ca/education. Martin Latulippe delivers the closing keynote at the Our Journey to Becoming Truly Patient Centered conference To maintain a strong health care system, we need to keep the world’s top medical talent here in New Brunswick. You can help by supporting the New Brunswick Medical Education Trust, which provides young New Brunswickers with medical school scholarships. 2014 | 2015 Annual Report 9 In case of emergency, rely on world-class research The ER. One way they’ve managed to continue their work has been through funding from the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation. The Foundation recently donated funds to cover half the salary of a Research Coordinator for two years. It’s a place no one wants to visit, but at some point in our lives, nearly all of us will. Luckily, there are highly trained specialists tasked with finding ways to keep our emergency departments running as efficiently and effectively as possible, all while maintaining a focus on people. “Without that contribution, we wouldn’t have been able to get off the ground,” Dr. Atkinson said. “The Foundation was pivotal to getting this program going, and it will be pivotal to keeping it going in the future.” Dr. Paul Atkinson is one of those people. He is the Research Director at the Saint John Regional Hospital’s Department of Emergency Medicine. During his tenure at the hospital, the department has made some significant advances in its work – including the publication of more than 20 peer-reviewed articles and recognition through a handful of national and international research awards. But while the research is important, Dr. Atkinson says it’s even more important to ensure the research links back to improvements in clinical care – inside the ER itself. The Foundation has also funded the acquisition of new simulation equipment for Dr. Atkinson’s research team, which one team member used to win another national research award. Dr. Atkinson says that when someone donates to research through the Foundation, that funding supports projects that improve the skillset of physicians working in the hospital’s ER, treating that very donor’s neighbours, friends, even family. “Pretty much everyone uses the ER at some point in their life, and we’re here to make sure people get the best, most efficient and high quality care possible, every single visit.” “We’ve shown that research is relevant to the care our doctors and nurses provide. It really can improve the way they treat patients,” he said. “It doesn’t happen instantly, but we’re also not talking 20 years down the road. Real change can happen in just two or three years.” Learn more at sjrhf.ca/research. One of Dr. Atkinson’s recent projects – which he coauthored with Dalhousie Medicine New Brunswick student, James Milne – won a national award, putting the research team on the radar of the best emergency medicine researchers on the planet. Meanwhile, a difficult reality Dr. Atkinson and his research team faces is the constant search for funding to support their work. “Some of our major funding sources have dried up in recent years, so our work is threatened by budget cuts,” he said. Dr. Paul Atkinson In 2014, we awarded over $250,000 in scholarships to New Brunswick Medical Students. Our winners may study at the university of their choice, but after graduation, they will return and practice in New Brunswick. We’re investing in the future of health care in New Brunswick – one doctor at a time. Research 10 Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation Helping patients live their lives, in their space Extra Mural Program provides holistic circle of care Known by many as the “hospital without walls,” the New Brunswick Extra Mural Program (EMP) works to prevent hospitalization and, when hospitalized, helps get patients discharged and safely home. It’s a vitally important piece of our health care system, because for many patients, being able to receive treatment at home makes all the difference. Danny Jardine is Therapeutic Services Manager with the Extra Mural Program. His team covers six disciplines: social work; respiratory therapy; occupational therapy; physiotherapy for mobility, safety and independence; dietary needs and speech language pathology. “With our aging population and demographic shift, we’re seeing many more seniors with health issues and chronic diseases,” Danny said. “We help them manage that in their home environment instead of the hospital. And that’s important, because let’s face it, people would rather be at home.” The EMP’s standard services are funded by Horizon Health Network. But for services that go beyond the basics, there is the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation. “Technology is starting to have an impact, and that’s a big role the Foundation plays – to help us purchase key tools for staff,” Danny said. “We recently purchased a new pressure mapping system to help prevent bed sores or wounds. It’s already relieving pressure for those clients.” Patient Comfort “It’s all about helping transition people back to normal life,” Colleen said. “They are able to be in the comfort of their own home, where things are familiar. That way, their condition or treatment isn’t such a disruption in their lives.” The EMP works with numerous community partners – in social development, mental health, public health, veterans’ affairs, homecare agencies, hospital services and more. Andre Jobe-Mackenzie is another EMP team leader. She says providing this holistic approach to health care at home is not only good for the system, it’s best for the patient too. “It’s better for them health-wise to be at home,” she said. “It helps keep families and spouses together. When a spouse is missing, that feeling of safety is often missing too. It results in a less clinical, more personal type of care.” The demands on EMP services grow each year. Saint John is the biggest EMP unit in the province, with more than 100,000 cases from more than 7,000 patients in 2013. Andre says the EMP often uses funding from the Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation for education, which is crucial to the team’s ability to provide world-class service. “The staff is the heart of the program – the face and the front-line,” Andre said. “We just manage the work, but they’re the ones doing this vital work in the community,” Danny added. “They certainly deserve our support.” He says there’s also a broader cost implication, when considering the value of the EMP. “From a provincial perspective, it’s cheaper to keep people at home too,” he said. “Each dollar invested in community care goes directly into care – there’s no overhead. I’d say that’s a great impact.” Colleen Smith is a Manager with the Extra Mural Program. Learn more at sjrhf.ca/patient-comfort. Horizon Health Network’s ongoing partnership with the Foundation and strong support from our community is the key to future successes and to achieving Horizon’s vision of “Exceptional care. Every person. Every day.” This partnership is one that benefits us all. Over the years, with the support of its more than 50,000 donors, the Foundation has helped Horizon enhance the quality of care we provide to all New Brunswickers, through accomplishments such as the neonatal intensive care unit, the NB Heart Centre, neurosurgery and more. Saint John Regional Hospital donors are generous and their support allows us to enhance the patient experience. Indeed, our Foundations have and will continue to help Horizon to meet the needs of our patients, their families and our community – one dollar at a time. Horizon is fortunate to have the help of the Foundation and we sincerely thank you for your dedication to improving the lives of our patients. Foundation staff and donors are making a real impact on those who seek care at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Growing up in a family of eight children, he and his siblings were no strangers to the local hospital – and the hospital was always there for them when they needed care. As he took the reigns of his family business, Dowd Roofing Inc., Bruce saw the need to give back to the hospital – and community – that had given he and his family so much. “I think it’s an obligation for businesses to give back,” he said. “This community and our customers have been so good to us, so we want to do our little part.” Bruce says he’s impressed by the spectrum of worldclass care being provided at our hospital, but of particular interest to him is the stem cell research work of Dr. Comeau. He attended school with the physician’s father and says he wants to contribute to further building this expertise in Saint John. Bruce’s contributions to our hospital have been incredibly generous – not only in their own right, but in the way they have encouraged others to give through his habit of matching donations. This year, he helped kick-off the GIVE 2014 campaign with a leadership gift of $125,000 which was matched by the John T. McMillan Jr. Memorial Foundation. He then matched proceeds of the 3rd Annual Love Your Hospital Radiothon, bringing the day’s total to $179,980 – enough to successfully close the year’s campaign. For Bruce, a well-equipped local hospital means patients can receive the care they need without having to travel elsewhere. For many, healing near home and family is the best medicine, and he firmly believes that everyone deserves that comfort during times of illness. Bruce is humble about the difference he’s made within our hospital, and says he plans to keep giving. “We want to do what’s right, and when the time comes, we’ll be there again.” “We all live here and we all need care here,” he said. “The hospital staff have built a great facility with wonderful care and expertise here in Saint John, and we need to support it.” Jeff McAloon, Jason Downey and Bruce Dowd 14 Saint John Regional Hospital Foundation Our heartfelt thanks The following individuals and organizations generously donated $1,000 or more to our Foundation in 2014-15.
