A Message from the Administrator
Forensics
By Dr. Polek
Do you have “glossophobia” – the fear of public speaking? May people do!
Research into this area indicates that some people fear public speaking even
more than they fear death. The ability to articulate ideas in front of others is an
incredibly important skill for all of life.
Kohl’s Wild Theatre……...Page 3
We are happy to offer a program to help our students with public speaking.
Our first through fifth grade students will have the opportunity to present a
speech or interpretive reading in their classroom. Then six students from each
room can move on to the Elementary Forensics East Division competition to be
held Saturday, April 25, from 8:30-12:00, at Big Foot High School.
Field Trips………………….Page 4
Here are the types of speeches students can choose to do:

Declamation: Humorous or Serious – 2-4 minutes – This is a speech highlighting an interpretation of literature.
Four-Minute Speech: 3-4 minutes – This is an original speech about a topic,
personal adventure, historical event, persuasion or a humorous event.
Demonstration Speech: 3-5 minutes – The purpose of this speech is to demonstrate a skill or process. This demonstration must have a finished product including the states of development. Sorry, no live animals.
Prepared Storytelling: 3-5 minutes – This is the retelling of a children’s story.
It is not memorized, but is a prepared presentation told in the student’s own
words. The story may be based on literature.
Prose or Poetry: 2-4 minutes – This is expressive reading of prose or poetry
and it may be a long piece or several short pieces of work with a common
theme.
How can you help? Feel free to help your child with the speech selection. Your
child’s classroom teacher will also be helping. We will offer some after-school
practice sessions. You could help in the classroom or after school listening to
speeches. Reek School is hosting this event at Big Foot High School. We will
need volunteers that morning to check people in, give directions, offer snacks,
etc. Please call Ronda at 248-4120 if you can help that morning. We look forward to developing great speakers!
Our Middle School Forensics Team completed their season and did a great job!

Pennies for Patients is a fundraiser that helps support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. For the first 3 weeks of March,
Reek School is participating in this fundraiser. Classrooms are competing against one another to see who can raise the most
money. The winning classroom will receive a pizza party! There are many events scheduled over the course of the fundraiser to
help students stay focused and excited about our mission. Check this calendar for dates about dress up days, wrist band sales,
open gym nights, ice cream sales, and the Shamrock Hop! Donating online is also an option this year. You can log on to our
school website and find the link along the left hand side. Once at the main page, look to the right where you will see "See the
School Reek Elementary School." From there you can click on the classroom you would like to help support.
We would like to thank you for your help in supporting this wonderful cause!
