Using Proportions
You can solve many problems that involve equal ratios or equal rates by using proportions.
Solve, using a proportion:
1) A photocopy machine copied 50 pages in 1.5 min. At this rate, how long will the machine take to copy 90 pages?
2) Tara spent 3 hours addressing 50 wedding invitations. At this rate,
how long will it take Tara to address 125 wedding invitations?
3) Travel Rent­A­Car charges customers $135 to rent a compact car for 3 days with unlimited mileage. At this rate, what will it cost to rent a compact car for 5 days?
4) To determine the number of deer in a forest, a forest ranger tags 280 and releases them back into the forest. Later, 405 deer are caught, out of which 45 of them are tagged. Estimate how many deer are in the forest.
5) I am taking a trip to Europe and I have $125 that I would like to exchange for Euros. How much will I receive in Euros? (http://www.x­rates.com/d/USD/table.html)
6) Hurricane Katrina dropped about 14 inches of rain over a 48 hour period. How much rain is this per hour? (Round your answer to the nearest tenth.)
7) In a shipment of 400 parts, 14 are found to be defective. How many defective parts should be expected in a shipment of 1000?
