President’s Prattle
Greetings all,
I hope you are enjoying the fabulous autumn weather we are having
at the moment and are managing to get out and about in your Mini.
I was fortunate to have been invited recently to a get together for
some of the earlier members of the Club. I had a very enjoyable evening meeting some of the clubs previous members, hearing stories
about what they used to get up to and learning about things the Club
did years ago. Mike and Jone Denison hosted the evening and they
put together a display of Mini memorabilia and items from the earlier
days of the club which were of interest.
It was also a great pleasure to travel there in style in Bob and Glenys‟
recently restored 850 Mini. Part of the adventure was spending a little bit of time on the way there in a driveway of a business on the
outskirts of Adelaide waiting for the Mini‟s engine to cool down after it started running out of power when the engine got hot. Fortunately after a few minutes and about 3 litres of water into the radiator
it was running fine again.
It was very strange to not be wearing a seat belt and it made me think
about the way things were back in the 60‟s when the Mini was released in Australia. There are so many things we take for granted
now and I felt that the more refined everyday things become the less
of an adventure things like a trip to Gawler are.
The club has planned to have a get together for all members and former members at our 50th Birthday celebrations in July. I think there is
great potential at an event like that for everyone to find out more
about the club and what things have happened over the last 50 years.
I hope to see you at the next Club meeting, there is a show and tell
theme so please bring along an item of interest. I intend to bring a
couple of things that were on display at the Denison‟s and I look forward to sharing them with you all.
Safe Mini motoring,
Mathew.

EAST WEST NEWS APRIL 2012
COMPETITION CORNER
G‟day all and sundry! And welcome once again to the little publication that is
way more highly regarded than the entire Queensland Labor party!
Well this is it folks a new comp year has kicked off! It is time to look in the mirror, then look in the shed, then back to the mirror, (then back to the shed, and
back to the mirror) and ask yourself, “What am I going to do with my self this
year? And what am I going to do with that Mini or Moke in the shed?” (or in fact
any other type of car) and if your answer is, “well I am pretty busy this year” or
I‟m not sure about this year but next year will be better” then go back to the mirror, and give yourself a kick in the bum. Carp Diem! Seize the day! You are living your life right now! Not next year! Send more time on your hobbies and
loves! They will never be totally convenient, so if you spend your whole life sitting around waiting for the right time, there is a pretty good chance you‟ll miss
out all together! All that preachy stuff being said, lets hop on over to the competition report!
Round 1 of the MCSA Super Series (a super sprint at Mallala) has been run
and won! MCSA Member Garth Pennington was out and about in his beautiful
Mini and has grabbed the lead in the tussle for the MCSA Race driver award.
Congratulations Garth! We have also had round one of the State Motorkhana
Series at Monarto, of which I haven‟t heard any tales back yet but I‟m sure
there is some to tell!!
But gazing into the official MCSA crystal ball, I see round 1 of the State Rally
championship, the Wattle range rally being held in Millicent creeping up slowly
(actually quite quickly!)
Where: Millicent and surrounds
When:
Friday and Saturday the 13th and 14th of April
I am desperately hunting (and narrowing in on a car, so hopefully I‟ll have it in
time and be there with bells on! All are welcome! And officials are always
needed!
Just behind the rally we have round 2 of the hill climb series (winter cup). This
one doesn‟t contribute to our Super Series but is great fun and good practice!
Of course you‟ll still get points toward the race driver title.
Where:
Collingrove just out of Angaston
When:
April 22
Then off in May we have round 2 of the State Rally Championship which will be
the Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally. This is always well attended, so even if you
don‟t have a rally car, but are interested in watching some great motorsport not
that far from home, get along and see it!
Where: Southern Adelaide Hills
When: 18 to 20 May
This is followed up in May by round 2 of the Mini Club SA Super Series!!! This
one is the tarmac Motorkhana at Monarto. So if you “stuff” is apart, get it together!!!
Cheers

Prodrive team
reveals podium
hopes
The new Prodrive WRC Team will break cover on Vodafone
Rally de Portugal this week with team principal Dave Wilcock
convinced that a podium finish is a strong possibility for the
British squad's lead driver Dani Sordo.
Previously run as the MINI WRC Team, the outfit will consist of the same personnel including number one pilot Sordo - that helped to secure three world championship podiums from seven starts for the Anglo-German make‟s John Cooper Works WRC. Prodrive
also oversaw Subaru‟s trio of WRC drivers‟ and manufacturers‟ titles previously.
While Sordo‟s MINI will be similar in appearance to the car he drove on Rally Sweden
last month, albeit with increased BP branding as part of an extended partnership with the
firm, more than 100 modifications have been made since then as part of a major homologation programme.
These include a three per cent increase in engine power; a tweaked front bumper to improve cooling and aerodynamic performance; enhanced Ohlins gravel dampers; and some
significant weight savings primarily due to the use of a lithium ion battery for the first
time.
“The newly homologated parts make a significant improvement to the car and should we
run error free, I would certainly hope that Dani could be up there fighting for a podium,”
said Wilcock. “However, the competition does have the significant advantage of having
already competed on gravel this year in Mexico, but Dani certainly knows the Portuguese
event well and has achieved podium finishes here on his last three outings.”
Sordo didn‟t compete in Portugal last year and also skipped Rally Guanajuato Mexico
earlier this month. However, he has conducted extensive testing in his uprated MINI and
has a strong record on the Algarve-based event.
“The new car felt really, really good,” said Spaniard Sordo. “The team at Prodrive have
done a great job. The new car feels like a big step forward and I could immediately feel
the difference. I have been on the podium the last three times I have been at Portugal and
I will be fighting hard to get MINI‟s first podium on a gravel event.”
Patrik Sandell, from Sweden, will line up in a second Prodrive WRC Team entry.
Armindo Araujo and Paulo Nobre will also pilot Prodrive-developed MINIs in Portugal.

Historic Registration
The following information is also available on our website; miniclubsa.asn.au.
The conditions of Historic Registration:
Werner Sturm is our Historic Registration officer and can be contacted for specific details
regarding the eligibility for a vehicle to be placed on Historic Registration. His contact details are on the back page of this magazine.
Historic Registration is open to vehicles that are at least 30 years old and have little or no
modifications. Once the vehicle has been inspected and the paperwork done, you are issued
with a log book that has to be filled out before you drive your car each time. Historic Registration allows you to drive your car 90 days per year.
You must maintain your financial membership with the club. The club is obliged to notify
the authorities if you have let your membership lapse. This will disqualify your historic
registration regardless of how long you have paid your registration fee for.
How to get Historic Registration:
1. Become a member of the club
2. Have your car inspected by the Historic Registration officer for eligibility. This is usually done at the Monthly General Meetings. Please contact Werner if you need to have this
done but are unable to attend the meeting.
3. Once your vehicle has passed the inspection, you will be presented with a log book and
paperwork. There is a small fee to cover the cost of the log book. You will need to take the
paperwork into the Motor Vehicle Registration office for processing.
* It is a good idea to ask for the „insurance extension‟ when you present the paperwork to
the Motor Vehicle Registration office. It doesn‟t cost you anything but allows you to move
your vehicle onto the road if having to shift vehicles in your driveway without having to fill
out the log book.
How to maintain your Historic Registration:
You must remain a financial member of the club for each year that you have your
vehicle on historic registration.

Your log book must be stamped by the Historic Registration Officer before 31st December each year. It is a good opportunity to do this when you are renewing your
membership.

Your Certificate of Registration (middle section of registration papers that has the
transfer details on the back) needs to be stamped by the Historic Registration Officer whenever you are commencing Historic Registration or paying your renewal.

You must fill out your log book whenever you are going to drive it, before you get
on the road.
If you fail to do any of these 3 points, you will be technically driving an unregistered vehicle and risk receiving a penalty.
