Dfadsfds HERRON HIGH SCHOOL The Indianapolis Classical High School Newsletter for September 26, 2015 Celebrating 10 Years of Excellence! Dear Students, Parents/Guardians, and Friends of Herron High School, I hope that you and your family are having a safe and restful weekend. Please support Herron High School Donate online now Finding a Great College Junior Parent College Night: October 8 While my purpose in writing this letter is to help your student and your family with decisions surrounding choosing a college, I feel I would be less than honest if I didn’t talk about Friday night’s violence. One of the young men who was killed is the brother of one of our former students. It isn’t my place to give out names, but the violence that we read about each weekend hit relatively close to home last night. As we as a Herron High School community work together, I hope that we keep inspiring our young people and the greater Indianapolis community to curtail and ultimately end this violence that is tearing apart neighborhoods and families. Deep Breath! Parent Roundtable October 13 From the moment our students arrive on our campus up until the day they walk across that our graduation stage, getting into college with scholarship dollars is the goal. Our curriculum is built around college preparedness. Our teachers, college advisors, and administration remind students every day that if they will just do their part to keep up their grades, their futures will be bright. Upcoming College Admission Reps at Herron HS Still, there are many anxieties that come with choosing a college. First of all, the remaining words in this newsletter are primarily my opinion. There is not an absolute formula or philosophy about finding the right college, but here are my thoughts. Benchmark Exams October 8-13 New Spirit Wear available now in the bookstore The Odyssey October 2-4 Follow us on Twitter @HerronHighIndy When my own children were choosing a college, we did not have unlimited funds. Our family goal was for our children to leave their undergraduate education debt free. I still believe that this is a great way to start thinking about a college choice. While our economy is coming out of a recession, college graduates are still struggling to find jobs in their chosen areas of study. Many of our students at Herron High School graduate with anywhere from nine to thirty two college credits. They earned these by taking a few of our dual-credit options and taking full advantage of our Advanced Placement courses. These high school opportunities allow our families to save a lot of money, and they send a strong message to colleges that our students are ready for college-level work. These courses are rigorous and take commitment and perseverance from our students as well as a strong commitment from their families. Too many students in Indiana and throughout our country graduate college with crippling debt. Their ability to pay rent, purchase a car, start a family, or take the low-paying job that might lead to their dream job are all inhibited by student loans. Planned carefully, a great college education can be affordable, especially with an academic record of achievement that earns those important scholarship dollars. I encourage families and students to work together to research to find the best fit for college. This site, Finding Your College Fit, is a great starting point. Deans Corner: This week’s question: “What is the policy on IDs and lanyards?” Each week Amanda Roberts, Dean of Student Development, will answer your questions. This week she will clarify the policy on IDS and lanyards. If you would like to submit a question to appear in an upcoming newsletter, please email Mrs. Roberts directly at aroberts2@herronhighschool.org It started small: First there was a key. Then there were key chains. Soon there were bottles of hand sanitizer and even a stuffed animal. These were some of the items that students began to hang on their lanyards with their IDs. The lanyards were covered in buttons, and the IDs themselves were obscured with miscellanea. IDs began to break off of the lanyards due to the weight of the other items, so we had to make a change. School IDs are an important safety element. Students were advised on both Tuesday and Wednesday this week that all Herron lanyards must only contain their Herron ID. Students are welcome to wear an additional lanyard containing keys, keychains, etc., but it must be tucked into their polo shirt or Herron outerwear so it is not visible. The additional lanyard itself may be any style, color, or design since it will not be visible. Plain black lanyards are for sale in the bookstore for only $1. The bookstore is located in the basement of the Main building across from the Resource room. The bookstore is open before school and also during all lunch periods. Cash, checks (made payable to Herron High School), and credit cards are accepted. This is now part of our uniform policy, and students will be logged for non-compliance. If you have questions related to the ID and lanyard policy or would like to submit a question to appear in an upcoming newsletter, please contact Mrs. Roberts at (317) 231-0010 ext 1122 or via email at aroberts2@herronhighschool.org Junior Parent College Night Parents and Guardians of 11th Grade Students: You are invited to Junior Parent College Night to hear important information about the college preparation and application process.
