® Benevilla Annual Report 2013 Cultivating Caring Communities “When tended the right way, beauty multiplies.” — Shannon Wiersbitzky 2013 was a wonderful year and it’s all thanks to you — our volunteers, donors, and friends. With your help, we’ve managed to change lives, grow community, and bring the generations together! Highlights from 2013 include being awarded the 2013 Golden Rule Award Service Award for having a model intergenerational day center as well as for our care and support of individuals with chronic challenges and their families. Benevilla also hosted acclaimed poet Gary Glazner, founder and Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Poetry project, at the first interactive Memory Arts Bistro presented by Benevilla and the West Valley Arts Council. Benevilla’s Helping Partners Program (HPP) Special Olympics athletes competed in the Special Olympics Area Competition, winning multiple gold medals. Benevilla received accreditation from CARF International (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) for Benevilla’s Adult Day and Dementia Care programs. Benevilla scored a perfect 100 in 24 benchmark categories. And, Benevilla’s events — Benevilla Goes to Broadway and the fifth annual Benevilla Festival of Cheer — attracted over 5,500 people. Each of these successes was made possible by you and your support of Benevilla programs. With your help we look forward to making 2014 another great year. Thank you. 2 Michelle Dionisio President & CEO Larry Vering 2014 Board Chair Thanks to You our Community is Changing in Amazing Ways! 4 About Benevilla 6 Our Volunteers 8 A Donor Story 10 11 Sources of Support How Funds Were Used 12 17 Thank you to our Donors 2013 Service Statistics Benevilla “With understanding, those we love will certainly flower.” — Thich Nhat Hanh Cultivating Caring Communities By cultivating a caring community of neighbors helping neighbors, Benevilla is able to provide extensive adult social, health and support services for older adults, adults with disabilities, children, and the families who care for them. Benevilla was created as a not-for-profit organization in 1981 by citizens of the Sun Cities area out of concern that local services were not readily available to the community’s residents. Their mission was to promote health and independence by providing supportive services to their neighbors. Today Benevilla provides day programs for seniors at four centers located in Surprise, Sun City, and Peoria and has two day centers located in Sun City and Peoria that are for intellectually disabled adults. Benevilla is also home to a family friendly, intergenerational learning environment through Wirtzie's Preschool and Child Care as well as a Family Resource Center that supported nearly 20,000 parents and grandparents in 2013. Benevilla also provides in-home help for seniors and homebound adults with the assistance of our 900+ volunteers who provide home delivered meals on wheels, grocery shopping, errands, transportation to vital appointments, and basic handyman services. 4 { Our Mission Enhancing the experience of life for people of all ages. } Benevilla Programs • 4 Adult Day Centers • 2 Helping Partners Centers for Intellectually Disabled Adults • Wirtzies Preschool and Child Care with Daily Intergenerational Activities • Family Resource Center with Support for Grandparents Raising Grandchildren • Birt’s Bistro & Catering — a Social Enterprise Business Model • Information and Resource Services • Meals on Wheels • Caregiver Support Groups • Emergency Response System • Pet Therapy • Community Garden • Community Arts • A Multitude of In Home Services Including: Grocery Shopping, Handyman Services, Transportation, Business Assistance, Friendly Visitors, Phone Pals, and more! “In almost every garden, the land is made better and so is the gardener.” -Robert Rodale 5 Benevilla Volunteers 290 new volunteers began their service with Benevilla in 2013, bringing the total number to just under 1000 34,914 hours & $760,800 34,914 hours — or the equivalent of over $760,800 — were contributed by volunteers in 2013. These contributions helped save Arizona taxpayers money by decreasing the need for public assistance in our community. 2,610 groceries 2,610 groceries were delivered to neighbors in need by Benevilla volunteers, ensuring that homebound individuals had easy access to food and sundries. 3 volunteers 20 years Benevilla honored three volunteers who have been with the agency more than twenty years and seven volunteers with more than 15 years of service. Twentytwo volunteers with 10-14 years of service were also recognized. 6 { Ellen Reed } Companion Planting The belief that two plants growing near each other produce mutual benefits. In 2013, Ellen Reed received the agency’s highest volunteer recognition, the Muriel Rose Award, as volunteer of the year for her loyalty, commitment, and caring attitude at Benevilla’s Sun City Restorative Care (SCRC) Adult Day Center. Ellen Reed has volunteered three days a week since February of 2007. Her duties involve the preparation and service of the participants’ lunch after which she cleans up the kitchen, freeing up time for staff to be able to assist those participants needing extra help. Ellen is always quick with a smile and a kind word, and she practices what we call Person Centered Care, putting the person before the task or, as she calls it, “human kindness.” Ellen ensures all participants are getting a meal that they want and always treats the participants with respect and dignity. She doesn’t miss a beat, even if someone changes their food order two or three times before lunch is served, and she will always take time to make a special sandwich or make a plate look just right. Ellen is also a Benevilla ambassador in the community, recommending our services to those whom she believes may benefit. In addition to the three days that she volunteers at SCRC, Ellen will take food to Benevilla employees when they are ill and offers to work at other special events that Benevilla may be holding. Ellen’s husband now attends SCRC three days a week as a participant. As Ellen’s role as a caregiver is changing, her commitment to Benevilla and other community organizations, like the hospital for which she also volunteers, has not changed. Ellen Reed is a Benevilla volunteer who, like all of our 900+ volunteers, is changing lives and creating hope — one act of service at a time. 7 { Ed Malmstrom Everblooming } A flower that produces a continual supply of blooms throughout a season . Ed Malmstrom was born in Sweden in 1919 and came to the United States a year later with his parents. He was raised by his uncle and other extended family, and he grew up in a poor rural farmland area of South Dakota during the Depression. As a youngster, he had a difficult time in school. He did not do well in English and sometimes got into trouble with the other students. In high school Ed played on the school football team. His coach recognized the young man’s interest in math and suggested he go to college for the subject. It was there, at South Dakota State College, that Ed met the first joy of his life, Elda. They were married for 51 years and have one daughter, three grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. They moved to Sun City, Arizona in 1980 and lived a good life. In 1987, Elda was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. She became a regular participant at Benevilla’s Adult Day Center (then Interfaith Community Care), and Ed became Elda’s full time caregiver. He was by her side caring for her in their home for almost 10 years before she passed away in 1997. Ed was very fortunate — he found love a second time around. Both he and Elda had been good friends with Arlyne Groth from their college days. After the passing of their spouses, Ed and Arlyne married on Valentine’s Day in 1998 at 78 years of age. In her later years Arlyne also developed Alzheimer’s Disease, and Ed served as her caregiver too. She passed away in 2012; they had been married for 15 years. Ed has been a dedicated contributor to Benevilla for over 30 years and truly understands the benefit of Benevilla’s services first hand. “Benevilla’s help enhances the quality of life for everyone involved. I just couldn’t manage without Benevilla.” 8 We have so many donors like Ed Malmstrom who generously support Benevilla throughout the years as well as utilize our services. We are honored to pay tribute to him as our Highlighted Donor for 2013.
