THIS PROGRAM IS FOR YOU
The Heavy Equipment Operator Certificate Program (HEO) provides you with the
knowledge and skills required to join the workforce as an entry-level heavy equipment operator.
In this hands-on 12-week program, plus a practicum, you will be trained to operate selected
pieces of equipment, which may include: compactor, loader, dozer, grader, and excavator.

Career Opportunities
Career opportunities vary with the location and type
of heavy equipment operated. As a Heavy Equipment
Operator you could be employed in the following areas:
• Construction
• Public Works
• Oil & Gas
• Logging
• Other industries requiring the use of heavy
equipment
This program is designed for the individual who
has little or no experience in heavy equipment
operation. It is a 12 week program (plus the
an additional 2 week work practicum) that
provides theory and practical training on various
pieces of heavy equipment such as compactor,
loader, excavator, dozer, and grader. This
program also covers soil structure, grades and
staking, preventative maintenance, excavation
math, blueprint reading, and construction site
fundamentals. Numerous safety tickets are
included. The program requires a 12 week
commitment to both the in classroom portion of
the program as well as the hands-on training.

Admission Requirements
• Minimum of 18 years of age upon completion of the
program
• High School Diploma or its equivalent*
• Mature students will be evaluated on an individual basis
and can apply under alternate Admissions Status
• A copy of and unrestricted Class 5 Drivers License
• A recent copy of a Driver’s Abstract (current within three
months of start of the program)
• Submit a completed personal profile
Conditions and Characteristics
Attributes of an operator include mathematical ability, excellent
vision, and a high degree of physical coordination as well as:
• Full range of body motion
• Manual and finger dexterity as well as eye, hand and food
coordination for handling and operating levers or controls
• Sitting for extensive periods of time on vibrating and/or
bouncing machinery
• Occasionally lifting and carrying items up to 50 lbs/22.5 kg
• Corrected vision and hearing within normal range
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Excellent physical condition
