Breeders’

crowned
It seems reasonable, if not logical that a horse named Ghostzapper running in a field of 13 horses
would win any race the day before
Halloween. However, Ghostzapper
and his jockey, Javier Castellano,
had a lot more than silly superstition
and chance on their side.

Stronach
Park, Ghostzapper took an
early lead and held it all the way to
the finish line. Horse and jockey set
a Breeders’ Cup Classic record, finishing the mile and a quarter run in
1:59:02. Three lengths behind, Roses in May came in second. Pleasantly Perfect, the 2003 Breeder’s Cup
winner, followed in third place.
Frank Stronach, Ghostzapper’s
owner and breeder, spoke about the
race during the Press Breakfast at
the track Sunday morning.
“Of course, I am very pleased
and very proud of Ghostzapper and
his sire,” Stronach said. “This is the
first time a Breeders’ Cup Classic
winner has sired another Breeders’
Cup Classic winner. I am feeling
very blessed.”

Scholarship will help soldier’s memory to live on
On Oct 14, 2004, Josiah Vandertulip, an Irving High School graduate and a specialist in the U.S. Army
became the first Irving resident to give
his life in Iraq. Irving High School, the
Greater Irving/Las Colinas Chamber
of Commerce and the Irving Schools
Foundation will honor Spec. Josiah
Vandertulip’s courage and sacrifice with
an endowed scholarship in his name.
The scholarship will be dedicated 1:30
p.m. at Irving High School on Veteran’s
Day, Nov 11.
During the Veteran’s Day ceremony,
a proclamation from the city of Irving
will be presented. The Irving ROTC
will present a special flag ceremony.
Congressman Pete Sessions and State
Representative Linda Harper Brown
have indicated they will attend; several
other public officials have also been
invited.
Josiah’s family agreed that an endowed scholarship benefiting another Ir-
ving student would be a fitting tribute to
Josiah. Every year, Josiah’s parents will
be invited to attend the Irving Schools
Foundation “Breakfast With The Stars”
where the scholarship will be awarded.
Mr. and Mrs. Vandertulip will sit with
the student receiving the scholarship in
their son’s name.
An endowed scholarship requires
support from the entire community.
Carolyn Dowler, principal at Irving
High, has taken the lead in cooperation
with the Greater Irving Las Colinas
Chamber of Commerce and the Irving
Schools Foundation to seek donations
from businesses, service organizations,
and Irving residents.
“He was an all around awesome
guy – Everyone loved him,” Jennifer
Pickerell, friend of Josiah’s who has
raised $300 for a scholarship in Josiah’s
name, said.
Individuals can make a contribution to the Josiah Vandertulip Scholarship Fund by calling the Irving Schools
Foundation at 972.215.5006. Mr. and
Mrs. Vandertulip will be informed of all
contributors for their son’s scholarship.
Irving voters select representatives in large election turnout
Irving voters did their part in one of

Opinion
Choose to be a part of the solution
President John F. Kennedy declared:
“If you are not part of the solution, you
are part of the problem.” In an increasingly contentious environment, it is both
inspirational and practical to realize
there are many among us who prefer to
be part of the solution.
President Kennedy’s statement is
meaningful in a society of seemingly
endless problems. Although some view
diversity as threatening and uncomfortable, others see it as a natural component of an ever-changing community.
Although some dismiss health and financial problems by blaming them on
poor choices, and those who simply fail
to realize there are problems; others provide constructive responses. Although
some believe our school systems are
falling apart, and our city is becoming
uninhabitable; others daily make profound efforts to ensure neither occurs.
Indeed, in Irving those who are
working together produce lasting effects
on the lives of Irving’s people. Rather
than criticism, they offer creativity;
rather than condemnation, compassion;
and rather than sink into despair and
negativity, they encourage us by their
examples.
Sergio Mantassa leads Mission Min-
istries at Oakview Baptist Church. From
off-site services for the un-churched,
to ESL classes, to meals for the needy
and lonely at Thanksgiving, this group
of volunteers makes such difference in
the lives of people. A recent Saturday
event involving these ministries saw
over 2000 people fill a City park for an
afternoon of diversion, creating a circle
of community support and friendship.
The Islamic Center of Irving is often viewed with curiosity and even suspicion. Knowing this, the Islamic Center nevertheless involved its people in
Irving’s recent election. In part because
of religious teaching, but more so out of
a belief they were protecting large segments of their City’s neighborhoods.
These men and women volunteered
their time, gave money to their cause,
and brought friends and family out to
vote-worthy activities on behalf of one’s
position regardless of the issue.
Local realtor and former Irving city
councilman Jack Spurlock has so focused his attention on a once obscure
project of Ambucs that this project has
received national acclaim. Increased
visibility has increased opportunities
for disabled and ill children to receive a
specially-made vehicle that allows them
The Irving Rambler
mobility, exercise and increases the optimism that aids in recovery.
In August of this year, the Irving
Women’s Network provided over $2,000
in school supplies to children whose
families could not. Elvia Wallace-Martinez and Debes Creer En Ti, a program
to aid recent immigrants with assimilation into US culture, continue to address
potential problems with real solutions.
All over Irving there are those who
labor without fanfare to lift up instead of
tear down. As we look at our community
and assess problems, we can learn valuable lessons from these whose positivity is always challenged by reality; yet
they don’t give up. One lesson is this:
Identifying the problem is less important than identifying the goal in addressing the problem. The choice is always
ours to make. We can allow ourselves to
be diminished by the problems we see
around us; or we can do as many of our
neighbors have done, the Elvia’s and
Jack’s and Sergio’s of our city. We can
look at each other in the bright light of
our common humanity and see the solutions, and be a part of them.

You have heard of pitchers hitting batters with baseballs. But on Sept. 13th Texas
Ranger relief pitcher Frank Francisco made
national headlines for another kind of errant
throw. He hurled a folding chair that broke
the nose of 41 year old housewife and Oakland A’s fan, Jennie Bueno.
Apparently, Ms. Bueno was part of a
group of fans sitting behind the bullpen who
had been mercilessly heckling the Ranger
relievers. Francisco faces criminal charges
of aggravated assault and a 16 game suspension from Major League Baseball.
Unfortunately for Francisco (who was
the American League rookie of the month
for August ) – the most remembered pitch
of his career may be the result of an angry
split-second decision to throw a chair. Revenge, while it feels right in the moment,
always bears bitter consequences.

Winners make‘Casino Nite!’
a special event to remember
More than 170 members of the local
business community attended the Greater
Irving – Las Colinas Chamber of Commerce, hosted “It’s Vegas Baby, Casino
Nite!” at the Embassy Suites on Oct 23.
The annual Casino Nite! fundraiser
helps the Chamber provide free and low
cost advertising and marketing services to
Irving’s small businesses.
Casino Nite! featured a fully equipped
casino complete with craps, roulette, blackjack, slots and Vegas style showgirls. A
poker tournament allowed the high rollers
to test their skills. By the end of the evening, Art Tedeschi took home the poker
tournament’s first place, which included a
trip to Las Vegas. Those not interested in
cards could try their luck in the slot tournament. Mila Clayton’s luck brought her
the slot tournament trophy and a Visa gift
card. The Big Spender Raffle’s grand prize,
a Visa gift card, went to Paul Oldham.
Tournaments, raffles and prizes aside,
the evening’s biggest winner by far was
Jackson Sample. Seven-year old Jackson
volunteered to take care of Bogar, a white
Sheppard/Yellow lab mix puppy, being
auctioned at the end of the night. Jackson
walked Bogar, played with him and introduced him to potential bidders before tearfully giving Bogar to the auctioneer.
STUDENT
OF THE MONTH
Casino Nite’s big winners Jackson Sample
and Bogar are reunited – together forever.
When the “puppy package” bid opened
at $450, young Jackson’s hand shot into
the air and stayed there. No one challenged
Jackson’s bid. After the auctioneer closed
the bid, Jackson rushed toward the stage to
retrieve Bogar.

tional TV, God forbids all retribution. Paul
writes “Do not take revenge, my friends, but
leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written:
“It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the
Lord.” Rom. 12:9
Mortals, especially Christians, get into
all kinds of trouble performing jobs reserved
for God. Those who deal in vengeance most
often verify the Boomerang Principle. What
one attempts to throw at others often comes
back around to leave a knot on one’s own
head. When we seek vengeance, the person
we hurt most is us.
So the next time you are on the receiving end of slander, unfair criticism or gossip, stay seated in your chair. Chairs are for
sitting and vengeance is God’s job.
Margaret’s Corner
City blessed to have great
group of elected officials
Hi Irving!
My Goodness, what an election.
My candidates? Yes, most of them won.
Our hearts are humbled along with our
great president. Yeah, I know what the
news is saying – provisional votes!?!
Well, why do they think they are “provisional”? I guess I need to tell them,
folks they were not registered, their
may be some, very few, might count,
that’s a big might.
I got to bed by 2:30 a.m. when I
went to sleep I slept so well, knowing
that President George Bush won. Pete
Sessions won among many others, Kenny Marchant. I couldn’t fight back tears
as I hugged and congratulated them last
night at our huge Victory party at the
Raddison. I’ve known these guys for so
many years, so the joy and excitement
is overwhelming.
On Monday night, I stood on the
front roll and listened to president
Bush. As I stood there praying, at times
out loud for him, some people around
me would comment, “We are praying
for him too!”
There are so many people, pastors,
etc. that get really involved with prayer
and support and voted! We truly made a
difference. I always say, “Good always
wins over bad.”
I am so very thankful. Many more
of our candidates won, our State Representative in Dist. 105 won. Wow is
Irving blessed, there isn’t anyone more
qualified and honest than our very own
Linda Harper-Brown. Irving and Texas
is in better shape because of this great
lady.
Unfortunately, we did lose some
excellent judges in our county. I’m not
happy about that. Although I did want
our republican candidate to win Sheriff for Dallas County, I’m not surprised
about that race.
Next Saturday evening Carol Van
Luik is having her kick off party at the
Four Seasons; I promised to be there.
Carol is going to be my candidate for
mayor of Irving – can’t wait. And the
beat goes on. Who ever thinks the political process ends, is sadly mistaken.
We need to stay involved, informed and
in prayer all year round, now more than
ever.
We had over 20,000 early voters at
city hall. Irving is on a roll, keep up the
involvement and responsibility. It’s so
important. Every person’s vote is important.
If you are not receiving The Irving
Rambler delivered to your mailbox
– do it now. Call me at 972-570-8322.
I’ll sell you a subscription. Why should
you buy one? Well because I want you
to be among the folks to make history
with this great paper. I am so excited;
we now publish it weekly. Thirty-five
dollars a year for a weekly good, positive and informative paper; it is a bargain.
Attend Church Sunday!
God bless you!

Registration on for New Therapeutic Program
This fall, Parks and Recreation’s Lively Pointe, 900
O’Connor St., will introduce a new Therapeutic Program
for persons 18 and up, who have mental and physical
disabilities.
Therapeutic sessions will be provided on Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each
session last 8-weeks. Pre-registration is required, and
the program fee is $50.00 per month.
Program fees includes class supplies, field trips,
drinks and a morning and afternoon snack. Initially,
class registration will be limited to 20 persons.
Program Schedule for the New Therapeutic Program is as
follows:
Session I*
November 1 - December 31
Session II
January 10 - March 5
Session III
March 21 – May 14
Session IV
September 5 – October 29
The purpose of the program is to provide individuals
with structured and supervised activities that will
improve social and recreational skills. Using a variety
of techniques, including arts and crafts, animals, sports,
games, dance and movement, drama, music, and
community outing, trained therapeutic specialists will
work to maintain the physical, mental, and emotional
well-being of participants.
Assistance with developing basic life skills will
also be reinforced. Instructors will integrate physically
challenged students into the community by teaching
hem how to use community resources and recreational
activities.
This first-time program is an effort of the Parks &
Recreation Department to serve all populations with the
city of Irving. “We always want each recreation facility
to be maximized to its full utilization potential,” stated
Recreation Superintendent Dwight Pinnix.
Lively Pointe will maintain its operating hours
for teen activity. Teens are encouraged to participate
in a variety of recreation programs Monday through
Friday 4 p.m. – 9 p.m. and Saturday 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
“Since facility usage for teens is after school and on
weekends, our goal was to create new services, during
the day, for another target market. The new therapeutic
program opens the doors of Lively Pointe to another
population and allows us an opportunity to expand our
services for the citizens of Irving,” said Pinnix.
The program will include a wide range of
programs and activities. For information, call 972.

Cup: Ghostzapper wins Classic at
Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie
Continued from Page 1
His remarkable year and Breeders’
Cup Classic victory makes Ghostzapper
a contender for U.S. Horse of the Year.
His main competition for the title will
be Smarty Jones, who won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness.
More than 53,000 people attended
the 21st Breeders’ Cup Classic, the
largest race ever hosted by Lone Star
Park. The Classic is the final race of
the Breeders’ Cup that includes a day
of eight thoroughbred races totaling $14
million in purses.
Run in Texas for the first time, the
Breeders’ Cup brought a miniature economic boom to the area. In preparation
for the Breeders’ Cup, Lone Star Park
spent roughly $8 million to improve and
expand its facilities. The race itself is
estimated to have an economic impact
of more than $30 million.

Irving’s longest running festival, the
Main Street Arts and Crafts Festival, celebrated its 27th year on Oct. 30.
The festival filled Heritage Park with
arts & crafts booths, pony rides, civic
groups and food. Children’s activities included a costume contest, pumpkin painting, and a rock-climbing wall. Blues music
played live in the park added a new twist to
the day.

A two-way, dual-language pilot program at Brandenburg Elementary School
reported its successes and findings to the
Board of Trustees. The program, in which
students alternate between Spanish-only and
English-only instruction every other day, is
unique in the district. Classes are composed
of half Spanish-speaking and half Englishspeaking students. Lessons are not repeated,
so students are forced to learn material the
first time it is presented, whether in English
or Spanish.
After one year of implementation in
two kindergarten classes, Brandenburg fac-
ulty had results to report from no less than
eight assessment tools. In most cases, students exited their dual-language kindergarten class fluent in their native language, and
four students reached fluency in both languages. Parent surveys revealed that 92 percent of parents of students in the program
were extremely satisfied with their child’s
learning and 100 percent reported that their
child achieved or exceeded their expectations.
Lee Recycling Program
Lee Elementary School students have
invited parents and neighbors to their campus to recycle. From 7:15 to 7:45 a.m. every Monday, students on Lee’s Green Team
help visitors unload carloads of cardboard
and newspaper into the school’s recycling
dumpster. The service is free and open to
the public.

The Irving Rambler
Matt Mungle interview with Hayden Panettiere
By MATT MUNGLE
Irving Rambler Contributor
Matt Mungle - So how many of these
(interviews) have you done today?
Hayden Panettiere - This is the first!
MM -You are out on the east coast right
now?
HP - We are. We are in Miami.
MM -Are you doing a lot of traveling
for The Dust Factory?
HP - We are. I am filming a movie up
in Calgary. A Lifetime Film, so I had to fly
down from Calgary to Miami, from Miami
to Dallas, from Dallas to LA. Then back to
Calgary.
MM - Does it ever get boring or old hat
for you to do all this traveling? Is there ever
a time when you just want to crash at home
and stay there for a while?
HP - Yeah, there are those times when
you just wanna be home. But honestly
I would never give up traveling. It is
awesome. Especially Miami is beautiful.
Mm - I’m looking at your credentials
and all the things you have done and it reads
like someone who should be like 30 or 40.
You have Grammy nominations, over 50
Mini biography
Hayden Leslie Panettiere was born
on 21st August 1989 in Palisades,
New York. She has starred in numerous TV shows and commercials;
and she was the voice of Dot in Bugs
Life. Hayden is best known for her
role as Sheryl Yoast in Remember
the Titans. Her new movie The Dust
Factory is now in theaters.
commercials, Soap Opera magazine Star of
the week, a string of movies. Where do you
go from here? What is on the horizon?
HP - (laughs) I would love to do some
serious drama, some action films. There
are always new things coming out. I think
the biggest thing is that I’ve sort of felt like
stuck a little because of the age I am at. I
usually wind up playing 17, 18 years old so
its sort of hard to get really good material
for my age range. But I would really love
to do some, just real cool films. Like Tomb
Raider type stuff. (laughs) maybe some horror movie, there’s always new things and
new characters to play.
MM - So you would like to go in and do
this whole kick butt, action girl, saving the
world type thing?
HP - Yeah! That would be one of them
but there is room for everything else.
MM - Good for you. Some people get
stagnant in one type of character.
HP-Yeah.
MM - Now is that something you think
happens because of what you’re reading
or Hollywood itself kind of puts people in
these boxes?
HP- Its Hollywood, they always…I call
it they... they always judge you by the last
film you’ve done. So if you do one where
you are playing the popular blonde cheerleader type, then you will wind up getting
scripts that are geared toward playing that
same role. Most if the time you have to nix
a lot of them because whether you like the
script or not you can’t play that role again
because you get stuck in that category. It’s
hard. You have to go back and forth…
MM - Using that as a comparison, how does
the role of Melanie in The Dust Factory
compare to stuff you have done in the past
and was that something that led you to this
because it was a different style character?
HP - Um, it was a totally different style
not like any other film I had seen before.
So imaginative, creative and I think it had
a really great message to it and it was a real
blast to film.
MM - When you choose something like
this do you have 100% control or do you go
to people that you trust like family members
to help you decide which roles to take?
HP - My mom always helps me decide
what roles. She usually reads the script
first and if it’s a good read, and worth
my time and stuff then I will read it. We will
discuss it, discuss the possibility of doing it,
and go from there. But she usually reads it
and tells me whether she likes it or not.
MM - Mom sort of knows what she is
doing too. She has had you in front of the
camera since you where what, 11 months
old?
HP - Yeah, at 8 months old I started doing some prints and then at 11 months old I
did commercials then I did a soap opera for
a while.
MM - See dude I am such a slacker. I
didn’t get my first job until I was like 19.
Man, I’m a loser.
HP - (Laughs)
.... To be continued...
Movie Review
Jamie Foxx’s performance makes ‘Ray’ a must-see movie
First and foremost, Ray is an intriguing illustration of
Ray Charles’ life. Ray was raised in poverty by his hardworking, single mother (Sharon Warren). She had the wisdom to empower Ray to live a complete and independent
life despite his losing his sight as a boy. After his mother’s
death, Ray crossed the country ending up in Seattle and
began making a name for himself.
As the movie depicts Ray’s life, it pulls no punches.
From early trauma, to drug abuse, to adulterous affairs and
illegitimate children, the story does not seek to idealize
Ray or sanctify him. Behind the strong, distinctive voice of
Ray Charles lies a story that would be impossible to make
up.
Secondly, the quality of the acting makes Ray a must
see movie. Jamie Foxx portrays an adult Ray with a sym-
pathy and understanding that creates a completely believable illusion that Ray Charles is on the screen. Sharon Warren, Ray’s mother, plays her part with a perfect portrayal of
tough no-nonsense love. Kerry Washington as Ray’s wife
Della and Regina King as Ray’s mistress are both convincing as strong women in love with a cheating man.
The movie’s weakness is its length, two and a half
hours. At times, the movie seems to repeat itself, and near
the middle the pace slows noticeably.
In the end, this is the story of a completely blind young,
black man raised in object poverty who battled drug abuse
and became one the music industries most successful and
daring artists. When leaving the theater, audience members
are compelled to asked themselves, ‘What have I done
lately?’.

I hope everyone had a very safe Halloween and now here comes our Fall Showers…welcome even though late.
Like spring, fall showers bring your
fall flowers. We all now and love the pansies snaps and dianthus, but I’m referring to
flowering house plants that grace your personal space – your home and office – and
brighten your day. You may have received
these plants as a gift or bought a plant to
splurge: fun.
Cyclamen are beautiful heart shaped
leaves with butterfly flowers in shades
of pinks, white, reads and purples hovering above the leaves. Cyclamen require a
bright location, yet no direct sun and prefer
cooler temps, but not drafty. The cyclamen
is a corm – a type of bulb – which will hold
some water so be careful not to keep the
soil soggy. A definite 5 green thumbs in my
book for enjoyment and easy growth.
We cannot dismiss the heritage and
soft beauty of African violets. Even though
history shows that the violets are ‘purple’,
there are many new varieties of colors to
grace your table. I’ve often heard ‘they are
so heard to grow’. Yet in speaking and finding out more information from the customers, the problem lies in the culture, usually
watering habits.
Violets love a bright location. If grown
in a dark area, supplement the lighting with
a ‘cool’ fluorescent light source. And water
the plant from the top – not the bottom
this will minimize a build up of salts in the
soil. African violets ‘hate’ to get any water
on their leaves or at the center – so be careful when watering. Water on the edges only.
Optimum temp for violets is 70 degrees.
Violets are a definite three green thumbs.
Bromeliad, a very sturdy and versatile
plant that is overlooked for its blooming
capability and attractiveness. One of the
most common bromeliads is the silver vase
with its pink flower that can last up to six
months.
The culture of the silver vase is water when dry but keep the vase filled with
rain water, or ROwater. The ‘mother’ plant
will die after blooming, but the pups can
be sepaerated for new plants. A five green
thumbs.
Happy growing! Grow onwards and
Upwards!

The Irving Rambler
Police take on firefighters
in charity game for PAL
Umpire, Chris Judkins, and Police catcher, Anthony Bell, watch as Firefighter Lavernzo Chavez hits a foul
ball.
A charity baseball game pitted the Irving police against the Irving firefighters on the Irving High
School baseball field, Oct 30.
The police started strong despite the wet field and unusually
hot, bright afternoon. But the firefighters rallied for a five to four
win.
Door prizes were awarded to
spectators and youngsters played
in bounce houses throughout the
game.
All of the funds generated by
the day’s game will support the Irving Police Athletic League (PAL)
programs. PAL helps more than
400 kids eight-years to 18 years old
develop self-esteem, discipline and
sportsmanship through physical fitness each month free of charge. For
more information on PAL’s programs, call the PAL Gym 972-2544659.

iCity Tech Council Luncheon
Tuesday, November 9, 2004 / 11:30 am – 1
pm, join the iCity Tech Council for a dynamic program on “ Venture After the Bubble
”, presented by Charles B. Humphreyson,
General Partner, HO2 Partners at the Four
Seasons Resort & Club, 4150 N. MacArthur
Blvd., Irving. HO2 Partners provides technology venture capital, accompanied by a
personal commitment, to help D/FW-area
entrepreneurs launch large, successful businesses. HO2 Partners’ first fund launched
in December 1999 with committed capital
of $33.7 million. HO2.1 Fund made investments in a total of eight ventures and currently has five growing, well-funded, wellmanaged companies in its portfolio. HO2 is
in the process of raising HO2.2 Fund, which
will close with a targeted size of $100 million.
“Venture After the Bubble” is a program
on the heyday of the Internet bubble, when
it seemed as though anyone with an idea for
using the Internet in their business was getting funded and getting rich. Now that the
bubble has burst, who is getting funded and
is anyone getting rich? What is the status
of venture investing, what are the markets
VC’s are looking to fund, and what role can
North Texas play?
Humphreyson has over two decades of
experience in the PC industry, both selling
hardware and developing software. He was
a founding executive of Contact Software
International, Inc., the developers and marketers of ACT! Contact Management Software, which became the international leader
in its category.
Make plans now to attend this informative luncheon. Cost: $30 / person for Tech
