CLARENDON TO BENEFIT FROM FURTHER EXPANSION

IN WATER SUPPLY

Today (December 4, 2015) the National Water Commission along with the Minister of Water,

Land, Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Robert Pickersgill, signed yet another contract to improve water supply in the island.

This contract signing was for the third and final phase of the Mason River/Kellits/Sandy River

Water Supply Project which will provide for the extension of piped water supply to sections of

Clarendon, significantly improving the level of service in that parish.

NWC Chairman in welcoming all who were present reminded the gathering that, “the National

Water Commission takes its mandate and mission of ‘contributing positively to national development by providing high quality potable water and sewerage services’ very seriously.”

According to him, the project represents “another demonstration of our commitment to fixing our problems and improving our service to the more than 2 million Jamaicans who depend on our service daily.” An excited Horace Dalley, Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for

Northern Clarendon was quite pleased that the contract for the pipeline construction was now being signed as these works will signal the completion of the overall project. He was especially grateful for the value of the investment under the contract.

“This is the largest single investment in that section of Clarendon since I have been Member of

Parliament,” he said.

Minister of Pickersgill told the audience that two contracts for the project have already been completed. “In August this year,” Mr. Pickersgill said, “I broke ground for the construction of the 100,000 gallon concrete tank for the water treatment plant to serve the Mason River,

Kellits, Sandy River, Rhoden Hall, Elbow Corner, Douglas Castle and Mcknie communities.”

The activities under the newly signed 26-weeks contract will therefore join all the other components already constructed to complete the overall project. Valued at approximately J$70 million, this segment will consist of the construction of four kilometres of 200 millimetre PVC pipeline, nine kilometres of 100 millimetre pipeline and two kilometres of 50 millimetre PVC pipeline within the Mason River and Shooters area.

Minister Pickersgill further stated that his administration is making significant investments in water supply, particularly to rural communities, and “in addition to the Mason River Water

Supply Scheme, we have several projects at various stages of development and completion.”

Mr. Harford of Champion Industrial Equipment and Supplies Limited, contractors on the project promised to complete the project within budget and on time.
