VOLUNTEER MEETING Thursday, February 26th 7:30pm in the School Gym Everyone interested in volunteering to help with our Parish St. Patrick’s Day Party is asked to meet in the School Gym on Thursday, February 26th at 7:30pm. As we have been unable to meet before now due to weather, this meeting is very important. The Party Volunteers meeting is being held directly after the Parish Events Steering Committee meeting so that members of the Steering Committee who are volunteering for the Party can attend both meetings. PARTY RESERVATION FORMS can be found enclosed in this week’s bulletin as well as in the back of the Church and in the Rectory office. IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND THE PARTY, PLEASE MAKE YOUR RESERVATION NOW. This is a dinner dance, so seating is limited... WE EXPECT THE PARTY TO SELL-OUT. Seating requests will be accommodated when possible. Later reservations will be seated at tables where openings are available. FLOCKNOTE is a great communication tool for parishes. In addition to offering parishioners an easy way to remain updated on the groups and ministries in the parish that are most important to them, it allows the parish to quickly let parishioners know about unplanned circumstances (i.e. meeting cancellation, parking lot condition etc.) and send important reminders such as Holyday reminders and schedules. We were very pleased to be able to send out a simple Flocknote this past week that gave our parishioners the Ash Distribution Schedule for our North Yonkers Cluster of Churches. When you sign-up for FLOCKNOTE, in addition to the rare, parish-wide update we just mentioned, you can choose to receive periodic updates (via email or text message) from the various ministries and groups in our parish. CHRISTtheKING PARISH EVENTS STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 26th 7:00PM IN THE FACULTY ROOM Please be on time - the meeting will begin promptly at 7:00pm to enable any committee members who are interested in Volunteering for our Parish Saint Patrick’s Day Party to attend both meetings. 2015 CARDINAL’S APPEAL Christ the King Parish #566 Our Parish Goal is $34,000 Pledges (as of 2/13) $12,515 Our sincere thanks to all who have pledged! It is quickly proving to be a very useful service, but it will only be effective if we can actually reach our parishioners - which means we really need everyone to sign-up for Flocknote and at least give this a try. If you don’t like Flocknote you can unsubscribe from the service at any time. The best way to sign-up is to visit our page online. Just type the following into your address bar: flocknote.com/ctkyonkers IMPORTANT: DO NOT type www. or https:// before flocknote Enter the text exactly as shown above and you should arrive at our sign-up page. Please enter your name and your email address and cellphone number (not a landline). Choosing a password when signing up is optional, but you will need to pick one if you revisit the site. LENTEN REGULATIONS In the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy it is stated, "The two elements which are especially characteristic of Lent – the recalling of baptism or the preparation for it, and penance – should be given greater emphasis in the liturgy and liturgical catechesis. It is by means of them that the Church prepares the faithful for the celebration of Easter, while they hear God's word more frequently and devote more time to prayer." (109) "During Lent, penance should be not only internal but also external and social. The practice of penance should be encouraged in ways suited to the present day, to different regions, and to individual circumstances." (110) A principal means of promoting penance and renewal is the celebration of the Sacrament of Penance. THE RITE OF PENANCE states that "The season of Lent is most appropriate for celebrating the Sacrament of Penance… to be reconciled with God and neighbor and so be able to celebrate the paschal mystery in the Easter triduum with renewed hearts." (no. 13) Lenten penitential practices should also include intensified prayer, fasting, almsgiving and performing the works of mercy. The Code of Canon Law reflects this view of penance. Canon 1249 urges all the Christian faithful to offer special prayers, to perform works of piety and charity, and to mortify themselves by fulfilling their responsibilities more faithfully. They are likewise encouraged to perform acts of fast and abstinence. ASH WEDNESDAY & GOOD FRIDAY are days of FAST AND ABSTINENCE FROM MEAT ALL FRIDAYS IN LENT are days of ABSTINENCE FROM MEAT FASTING prescribes that only one full meal a day be taken. Two smaller meals may be taken to maintain strength but these taken together should not equal another full meal. Fasting obliges from the 18th to the 59th birthday. Those not specifically obliged to fast ar e encour aged to join in the discipline of fasting to the extent that they are able. ABSTINENCE prohibits the eating of meat. Abstinence obliges from the 14th birthday on. There is a serious obligation to observe these penitential practices in a substantial way. Those whose work or health would be impaired are excused from fast and abstinence. Individual conscience should decide proper cause for excuse. A more serious excuse is required to excuse oneself from Ash Wednesday and Good Friday fast and abstinence.
