General Engineering Orientation Academic Advising & Class Registration TODAY’S GOALS • What is academic advising and who is responsible • Discuss the importance of your VT email • Review – Orientation packet – Hokie Spa – Unofficial Transcript – English Placement • Work on your fall class schedule – Curriculum for Liberal Education (CLE) – First-Year Engineering Requirements ACADEMIC ADVISOR & STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES • Academic Advising at Virginia Tech is a collaborative process between student and advisor leading to the exchange of information that encourages the individual student to make responsible academic and career decisions. • It is YOUR responsibility to be aware of all major, degree, college, and graduation requirements necessary to complete your degree. • As an academic advisor, it is MY responsibility to help you interpret the requirements, but you the student must bring any questions you have to me or your future advisor. VT EMAIL REMINDER • We have been emailing your VT and non_VT emails through out the summer. From this point forward we will only email you and you should only email me from your VT account. • Check and read your VT email on a daily basis—you will be sent notifications from university officials, advisors, and professors regarding upcoming events, deadlines, and etc. • “I didn’t get that e-mail” or “I didn’t read that e-mail” is not an acceptable excuse for missing a deadline. Always email university officials from your VT email account. Please include a greeting and full name in the email body. • • ORIENTATION PACKET • EngE undergraduate homepage – www.enge.vt.edu – Click undergraduate on the left bar • Orientation • Review Information Packet FIRST YEAR COURSES Spring Semester Fall Semester Course Title Credits Course Title Credits ENGE 1215 Foundations of Engineering 2 ENGE 1216 Foundations of Engineering 2 Free-Time CRN: 80018 Free-Time CRN: 80016 ENGL 1105 First Year Writing 3 ENGL 1106 First Year Writing 3 MATH 1225 Calculus of a Single Variable 4 MATH 1226 Calculus of a Single Variable 4 CHEM 1035 General Chemistry 3 PHYS 2305 Foundations of Physics 4 CHEM 1045 General Chemistry Lab 1 CLE Course (Area 2, 3, or 7) 3 PHYS 2305 Foundations of Physics Lab CHEM 1045 General Chemistry Lab Major Requirement or CLE Course Total Credit Hours 16 Total Credit Hours 0 1 2-3 15-17 DECLARING A DEGREE-GRANTING ENGINEERING MAJOR • Admission to each degree-granting engineering major is competitive based on overall Virginia Tech GPA and Engineering Index GPA. • The Overall GPA is calculated based on all courses taken at Virginia Tech • The Engineering Index GPA is calculated based on courses taken at Virginia Tech which include: – all courses in bold on the previous slide – courses with the following prefixes • From the College of Engineering: AOE, BMES, BSE, CEE, CHE, CNST, CS, ECE, ENGE, ENGR, ESM, ISE, MSE, ME, MINE, NSEG • From the College of Science: BCHM, BIOL, BMVS, CHEM, CMDA, GEOS, ISC, MATH, NANO, PHYS, STAT • Exceptions include those courses which appear on the College of Engineering’s Non-Degree list • A minimum 3.0 overall Virginia Tech GPA and 3.0 Engineering Index GPA will guarantee students their first choice engineering major. • Complete list of Change of Major Requirements and Policies HOKIE SPA: GENERAL STUDENT INFORMATION WWW.HOKIESPA.VT.EDU FOREIGN LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT • Two (2) years of a single foreign language in high school will satisfy the Engineering Foreign Language Requirement. • Students can view their Foreign Language requirement under View your General Student Information in Hokie Spa. • Hokie Spa will be updated in October.
