INFORMATION REPORT 10 – M/2012 – Page 1 OSTEOPATHIC INTERNATIONAL ALLIANCE Johannes Mayer, MD, DOM (DE), Chair This report reflects the activities of the OIA Board of Directors from July 2011 to February 2012. 2011 Potsdam Annual Conference and General Meeting The OIA held their 2011 Annual Conference and General Meeting September 29-30, in Potsdam, Brandenburg, Germany. The OIA partnered with the Osteopathic European Academic Network (OsEAN) to present “Teaching Palpation,” which was part of the larger “Thorax – Movement, Breathing, Life” conference, hosted by the German Osteopathic Association (VOD) and German Association for Osteopathic Physicians (DGOM). In attendance at the OIA-OsEAN conference were more than 140 osteopathic registrants from Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Luxemburg, New Zealand, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The full conference had more than 500 attendees. The OIA’s business meeting closed the conference, where the Full membership elected three representatives to the Board of Directors. Peter Ajluni, DO, was re-elected to the Board, where he currently serves as the Secretary-Treasurer. Jane Carreiro, DO, who was nominated by and represents the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO), was elected to her first term on the Board. Karen Nichols, DO, who was nominated by and represents the AOA, was elected by acclamation to her first term on the Board. The OIA Board of Directors is composed of nine directors currently representing six organizations, plus one lay member, from five countries. All seats are three-year terms. 2012 Midyear Meeting – March 24-25, at the AAO Convocation The OIA Board will hold their midyear meeting at the Galt House, as part of the AAO’s Convocation. This meeting will include normal Board business, a strategic planning session and a special meeting of the membership to consider several bylaws changes. OIA Status Report on Osteopathy Document Following the OIA’s meeting with World Health Organization (WHO) representatives in April, the OIA Status Report on Osteopathy Task Force worked to develop Stage 1 of the report, which focuses on the current state of the profession, including education, training and regulation. The Stage 1 Report was sent to members for comment and was part of the discussion at the Potsdam Conference. The Task Force has now begun work on Stage 2, which will include background on the profession and prove the efficacy of OMT. Representatives from the Board will meet with WHO staff in February to ensure that the document is being developed properly to fit in with the WHO’s new strategy and timeline to fit in with their 2014 strategic plan. OIA Newsletters The OIA is now providing a quarterly newsletter to their members, which highlights member benefits and services, recaps and previews official meetings, showcases new members and provides a listing of upcoming member meetings.
