MATHEMATICS 100 — All sections
Spring 2012 COURSE OUTLINE
Welcome to Math 100: Calculus I. In this course we will learn a few tools from calculus that will be useful in
your future career in math, engineering, economics, physics, or any other science. Thank you, and we wish you a
productive and rewarding term.

Instructors
There are two instructors in this course. For math-related questions, you are welcome to talk to any of us; you are
not restricted only to your lecturer. If you cannot make our office hours, the Math and Stats Assistance Centre is a
fantastic resource and of course you can talk to us at the end of a lecture. We are always happy to talk to students!

Tuesdays 9:30-11:15
Prerequisites:
Minimum grade of B in one of Principles of Mathematics 12, Pre-calculus 12, or equivalent, or a passing grade in
Math 120, or passing the Placement Test.
Course Content:
See Section 5.
Course site:
Go to http://moodle.uvic.ca and sign in with your Netlink ID. All course announcements, including homework
assignments and instructions for midterms, will be posted there. We expect you to check the site regularly.
Textbook:
Calculus Early Transcendentals, 7th Edition, Edwards and Penney, published by Pearson/Prentice Hall. It is stocked
by the Campus Bookstore. SUBtext, a student-run used book store located in the Student Union Building, may also
have used copies. There is an instructor solution manual which contains full solutions to almost all problems in the
textbook. There are copies of it in the Reserve Reading Room of the Library and in the Math Assistance Centres.
In addition, you can access an online version of this manual at MathXL. For instructions on how to access it, see
http://www.math.uvic.ca/~alfonso/Math100/MathXL2011.pdf
Math 100 vs Math 102:
Math 100 and Math 102 are similar courses. Math 100 requires a greater facility with algebra and trigonometry,
and will prepare you to take further courses in calculus. It is mostly intended for students in mathematics, the
physical sciences, and engineering. Math 102 is a course for students who will not require any further calculus
courses afterwards, mostly in business and the social sciences. You cannot receive credit for both Math 100 and
Math 102.

Lectures and tutorials
There are twelve sections for this course. Please check on http://fast.uvic.ca/FASTPORTAL/ to make sure you are
enrolled in the correct section and to find out your room and schedule. Each section has three hours of lectures
and one hour of tutorial per week, which are all required. If you would prefer to attend a different section,
you are welcome to do so, but you need to change your enrollment first.
3
Evaluation
We will compute the final mark in this course as follows:
• Homework - 10%.
• First midterm, on Thursday, February 2nd, 18:15-19:45pm — 20%.
• Second midterm, on Friday, March 9th, 18:15-19:45pm — 20%.
• Final Exam — 50%.
Homework
There will be 5 homework assignments. Assignments are due at the beginning of tutorials in the weeks as indicated
in the lecture schedule, and you have to turn them in at the tutorial in which you are enrolled. We will not accept
any late homework assignments. For the specific dates on which they are due, see section 5.
Midterms
All twelve sections will have common midterms on a Thursday or Friday evening (see dates above). Locations and
material covered will be announced on the moodle site. If you miss a midterm for a justified reason (illness, accident,
or family affliction) we can excuse it, but we will need proper documentation. In that case, please contact your
instructor as soon as you are able to do so.
Final Exam
The final exam will be in April on a date to be determined by the University.

We will post the homework assignments on the moodle site. These assignments will be marked and returned to
you. In addition, we expect you to work on all the practice problems in Section 6. Without the experience you will
earn by doing them you will be very unlikely to succeed in this course.

Practice problems
In addition to the problems that you will turn in and be marked on, we expect that you will solve all the practice
problems below. These problems will not be turned in or marked, but will provide you with the amount of practice
you need to perform well on tests. When you have questions (and you will!) come see us during office hours or visit
the Math Assistance Centre.
We have divided the problems into two categories: core problems (the ones that we expect everybody to do) and
suggested problems (to give you more practice if you are not confident enough after solving the core problems). You
can also see full solutions to all of them in the instruction solution manual at MathXL (see section 1).

Appendix B - Departmental policies
Final Examination Off-schedule final examinations (i.e., deferred examinations) are given only in accordance with
the university policy as outlined in the Calendar. If you are unable to write a final examination due to illness,
accident or family affliction, please refer to the following webpages for detailed instructions how to proceed:
http://web.uvic.ca/calendar2011/FACS/UnIn/UARe/AcCo.html and
http://web.uvic.ca/calendar2011/FACS/UnIn/UARe/DeSt.html
Guidelines on Religious Observances
1. Where classes or examinations are scheduled on the holy days of a religion, students may notify their instructors,
at least two weeks in advance, of their intention to observe the holy day(s) by absenting themselves from classes or
examinations.
2. Instructors will provide reasonable opportunities for such students to make up work or missed examinations.
3. Students will cooperate by accepting the provision of reasonable opportunities for making up work or missed
examinations.
4. The University Secretary’s Office will distribute a multi-faith calendar to each academic unit annually.
Commitment to Inclusivity and Diversity
The University of Victoria is committed to promoting, providing and protecting a positive, supportive and safe
learning and working environment for all its members.
Academic Integrity
Cheating, plagiarism and other forms of academic fraud are taken very seriously by both the University and the
Department. The University’s policy on academic integrity can be found at http://web.uvic.ca/calendar2011/
FACS/UnIn/UARe/PoAcI.html.
Attendance
The university Calendar states ’Students are expected to attend all classes in which they are enrolled.’ (see
http://web.uvic.ca/calendar2011/FACS/UnIn/UARe/index.html). The courses in the Department of Mathematics are conducted on that basis. If you miss an announcement (information concerning midterms, corrections to
assignment, etc.) because you did not attend class, you must accept the consequences of not having learned of the
change.
Math and Stats Assistance Centre
Experts are available to help you at the Math and Stats Assistance Centre. For hours and locations visit http:
//www.math.uvic.ca/~msassist/. This is a free service where you can go to work, on your own or in groups, and to
discuss math and stats problems. The Centre is staffed with talented Teaching Assistants who are happy to discuss
primarily first and second year course material with you. The Department of Mathematics and Statistics also has a
list of private tutors available from our main office SSM A425.
Calculators
If a calculator is allowed in tests and examinations in a course offered by the Department, then the only acceptable
calculator is the Sharp EL-510R. It may be purchased at the UVic Bookstore or elsewhere for about $10. In some
courses, calculators are not allowed.
