Math Facts and Flashcards In first and second grade the math concepts of addition and subtraction of numbers through twenty are developed. A strong emphasis is placed on helping children memorize the basic facts. Therefore, it will be beneficial to practice with a set of addition and subtraction flashcards with you child. Tuesday through Thursday flashcard practice will be assigned for homework. Ten to fifteen minutes of practice should be sufficient practice time. Show the child the fact cards, one at a time. Put the ones answered correctly in an enveloped labeled “Facts I Know”. Put the ones answered incorrectly in an envelop “Facts I Need To Learn”. During the next practice session continue to have your child study the facts he/she needs to learn. In class on Wednesday and Friday a fact speed test will be given. Second grade has 90 seconds and first grade has 2 minutes to complete 25 problems. One hundred percent accuracy is expected before the next set of facts can be studied. Watch for the results of these tests to come on every Wed. and Fri. When your child passes a test an award will be given. On the award is a list of the next set of facts to be studied. Pull only these facts cards from your set of flashcards for study. The first test includes all the addition facts with zero as an addend (example: 0+1, 0+2, 0+3 etc.) It will be very easy to pass this test. Attached you will find the progression of addition and subtraction facts to be studied this year.
