2014 Austin Aztex Media Guide
About the Austin Aztex
General Information
Austin Aztex Vision
The Austin Aztex are a franchise in the USL founded
in 2011 to reestablish a team in Austin after the original
Aztex team moved to Orlando. The team plays an exciting
brand of soccer featuring elite local and national players.
In the first year of competition in 2012, the team made
the playoffs, representing the Mid South Division.
The 2013 season culminated to the PDL
Championship game, in which the Aztex defeated the
Thunder Bay Chill in front of 4,253 fans at House Park.
The Aztex finished the 2013 season with one of the top
records in the league as well as individual accolades,
including Coach of the Year (Paul Dalglish), PDL Most
Valuable Player (Kris Tyrpak), and PDL Championship MVP
(Sito Seoane). The Aztex finished the 2013 campaign with
five consecutive single-game attendance records and
were among the top ten highest-drawing teams in the
league.
A priority for any minor-league franchise is to
develop players who will be promoted to higher levels of
the sport. While the Aztex field a team that can compete
for championships, it is a higher priority to cultivate
player talent by providing an experienced coaching staff,
a professional environment, and high-level competition.
In doing so, the Aztex were excited to have three 2012
players chosen in the first 11 picks of MLS SuperDraft. The
following draft, five Aztex players were selected while
Sito Seoane was added to Houston Dynamo’s preseason
roster, giving the Aztex nine total players in two years
who were claimed by an MLS squad.
The franchise is owned and operated by ATX SOCCER
LLC, chaired by Rene Van De Zande, President and CEO
of Emergo Group and founder David Markley, VP of
Technology Development for Fallbrook Technologies.
Provide High-Level Soccer to the Austin Area: The
Aztex endeavor to provide local soccer fans with quality
soccer entertainment through our own games and by
supporting exhibition matches featuring professional
teams from other leagues. A supporting goal is to
provide financial stability to ensure a long term presence
in the Austin community. With this in mind, the franchise
will focus on building a strong foundation within the local
business community and with soccer supporters groups.
We will also work with community leaders to be a catalyst
for a soccer specific stadium, but first we will establish the
economic viability of our franchise to support this future
goal.
Develop Elite Players and Prepare Them to Play
at the Next Level: A priority for any minor-league
franchise is to develop players who will be promoted to
higher levels of the sport. While we will field a team that
can compete for championships, it is more important
to cultivate their talent by providing an experienced
coaching staff, a professional environment, and high-level
competition.
Serve as a Resource within the Austin Soccer
Community: As Austin’s soccer team, the Aztex intend
to support youth clubs, school and university teams, and
adult leagues by offering additional programs. Initial
services include providing clinics for high school coaches,
partnering with referees to provide training for highlevel matches, and working with our medical partners to
educate coaches and participants on sports medicine.
Long term goals include leveraging our position to
support the development of additional soccer fields and
provide opportunities for participants that face economic
challenges.
Develop Strong Local Partnerships: The Aztex will
conduct business operations in a professional manner
to foster long-term relationships with businesses and
organizations. It is our desire to partner with Austinowned businesses as sponsors, and buy locally for our
organization when possible.
Austin Aztex Mission Statement
The Austin Aztex are committed to being Austin’s
professional soccer team, while providing a winning and
entertaining style of soccer. We will represent Austin
by building strong local partnerships, developing local
players, and serving as a resource to the local soccer
community.

2014 U.S. Open Cup Information
For the second consecutive year, the Austin Aztex have
qualified to participate in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
Dating back to 1914, the U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup
competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in
the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams
in the United States, the annual U.S. Open Cup is a 101-year-old
single-elimination tournament.
In a nutshell, the U.S. Open Cup is very similar to domestic
cup competitions popular throughout Europe, South America
and the rest of the world. Cup competitions, which usually run
concurrent with a country’s league season, are open in the
early stages to any club that can qualify, giving local amateur
teams a chance to compete against the best teams a country
has to offer.
In leagues like the Premier League in England, the Serie
A in Italy and the Bundesliga in Germany, cup competitions
are prestigious tournaments waged between countries’
strongest teams like Manchester United, AC Milan and Bayern
Munich, and smaller teams like the amateur French side Calais
that made it to the finals of the 2000 French Cup only to fall
to defending champions Nantes on an injury time penalty
kick. Watford F.C. in England, was another small-time club
that hit it big in 1984 by making it all the way to the F.A. Cup
Final. Unfashionable Chesterfield of the Second Division (the
third flight in England) advanced to the semifinals of the
1997 F.A. Cup in England before finally losing. The winner
of each country’s domestic cup competition, in addition to
taking home the prize money, is automatically placed into a
tournament to compete against neighboring countries’ cup
winners.
In 1999, the U.S. Open Cup was renamed the Lamar Hunt
U.S. Open Cup to honor the long-time soccer supporter and
pioneer. Hunt, who died in 2006, was one of the sport’s first
major ownership figures and is a member of the National
Soccer Hall of Fame. His family continues to operate FC Dallas
and the Columbus Crew in Major League Soccer.
The winning team of the U.S. Open Cup has their name
engraved on the Dewar Challenge Trophy, which has been
permanently retired and remains at U.S. Soccer House in
Chicago.
Tournament Format and Match Dates
The 2014 U.S. Open Cup will be conducted on a singleelimination, one-game-knockout basis utilizing a tiered-bracket
format. Teams will be paired geographically. In the event that
three or more teams are from the same proximity, pairings for
these teams will be made by random selection. Pairings will
be arranged to prevent the possibility of a lower division team
playing a parent club (e.g. Portland Timbers U-23s [PDL] will
not be pitted against the Portland Timbers [MLS], should both
teams be in the competition in the same round) except for the
Final.
First Round—May 7 (16 amateur teams: 5 PDL, 4 USASA
regional qualifiers, 5 NPSL, 1 US Club Soccer, 1 USSSA): Teams
from the same qualifying pool cannot be paired with each
other.
Second Round—May 14 (8 First Round winners, 26
remaining amateur teams [14 PDL, 6 USASA regional qualifiers,
6 NPSL], and 14 Division III [USL] clubs): Teams from the same
qualifying pool cannot be paired with each other.
Third Round—May 28 (24 Second Round winners and 8
Division II [NASL] clubs): Each Division II team will be matched
geographically to play the winner of a specific Second Round
pairing. The winners of the 16 remaining Second Round
matches not paired with a Division II side will play each other.
Fourth Round—June 10-18 (16 Third Round winners vs.
Division I [MLS] clubs): Each Division I team will be matched
geographically to play the winner of a specific Third Round
pairing. The exact date for each match will be determined by
Aztex History in the U.S. Open Cup
the club selected as the home team from among those dates

About the United Soccer Leagues
About the Premier Development League
United States Soccer Federation League System
Soccer League, a league that was formed in 2009, but
did not debut until 2011. The only sanctioned Division III
league is USL Pro.
Amateur leagues sanctioned through organization
members of the United States Soccer Federation are
ranked into two divisions: Division IV, and Division V.
In Division IV, the USL Premier Development League
takes place during the summer months, and the
player pool is drawn mainly from NCAA college
soccer players seeking to continue playing
high level soccer during their summer
break, while still maintaining their college
eligibility. The National Premier Soccer
League is similar to the USL Premier
Development League and also attracts
top amateur talent from around the
United States. NPSL does not have
any age limits or restrictions,
thus incorporating both
college players and former
professional players alike.
USL has become the largest organization of elitelevel soccer leagues in North America by building on
the vision, commitment, and passion of players, fans
and investors. Now in its third decade of operation, USL
continues to be a driving force in the growth of soccer in
the United States, Canada and Caribbean. USL provides
a clearly defined path for the progression of male and
female soccer players beginning at the youth level (Super
Y-League/NextGen), continuing through the amateur
level (PDL/W-League/Super-20/W-20) and up to the
professional level, both outdoor and indoor (USL PRO/
MISL). A platform for players to reach for their dreams
each year, USL is devoted to developing the sport at the
grassroots level in every community across the region.
Unlike many countries’ soccer league systems, in
the United States, no professional league uses meritbased promotion and relegation to allow teams to move
between divisions. The country’s governing body for the
sport, the United States Soccer Federation (also known
as the USSF or US Soccer), oversees the system and
is responsible for sanctioning professional leagues,
and the leagues themselves are responsible for
admitting and administering individual teams.
In the United States, professional men’s
outdoor soccer leagues are ranked by the
United States Soccer Federation into one
of three divisions: Division I, Division
II, and Division III. Since 1996, Major
League Soccer has been the only
USSF Division I men’s outdoor
soccer league in the United States.
The only currently recognized
Division II men’s outdoor soccer
league is the North American

The proven developmental leader in North American
soccer’s evolving tiered structure, the PDL features 64
teams within four conferences throughout the United
States and Canada, including 12 teams affiliated with USL

to be an important stepping-stone for top professionals
now playing throughout the world, with 70 percent of
all MLS draftees having PDL experience. The PDL season
consists of 14 regular season matches for each team,
seven home and seven away, and provides elite collegiate
players the opportunity to taste a higher level of
competition while maintaining their eligibility. In addition
to league play, PDL teams compete in the Lamar Hunt

Austin aztex to join usl pro in 2015
The Austin Aztex are pleased to announce the
addition of professional soccer to the sports landscape in
Austin, Texas. As Austin’s soccer team, the Aztex will join
USL PRO to begin play in the 2015 season.
“After two very successful seasons on the field in the
USL Premier Development League — which included a
2013 national championship and a steadily growing fan
base — we are ready to move to the USL PRO level,” said
Austin Aztex owner Rene van de Zande. “We have a clear
vision for what we want to achieve with our club in Austin
and joining USL PRO is part of this. The recent formation
of a strong Aztex owners group allows us to continue
building our franchise in a city that deserves professional
soccer at the highest levels. Our ambition is to turn the
Austin Aztex into a ‘house of excellence’ geared towards
nurturing and developing the best professional players
on and off the field.”
Additionally, Austin-area soccer advocates Bobby
Epstein and Paul Thornton have joined ATX Soccer
LLC, the ownership group of the Austin Aztex, to
aid the franchise’s growth into a premier sports and
entertainment property in the United States. The
new additions create an Aztex ownership group that
combines an intimate knowledge of Austin soccer with
the experience of organizing and producing global
sporting events and concerts including Formula 1, USGP
and ESPN X Games.
“By bringing together friends and families, sports
unite communities and dissolve boundaries,” Epstein said.
“I’m excited to be a part of taking the Austin Aztex and
their championship brand of soccer to the next level.”
Mr. Thornton will play an active role and utilize his
background in marketing, fan experience, and revenue
generation to help the business development of the
Aztex organization, while fueling his passion for the sport
of soccer.
”I am thrilled to join this team that has already
achieved such great success, and do what I can to help
the organization succeed at the next level,” Thornton said.
”The sport of soccer plays a major role in our family as
we love this game. My oldest, Cole, is heading off to play
striker in college next year, and Jaxson plays goalkeeper
at an elite club level. To be part of introducing a pro
soccer team in Austin has had our house buzzing.”
The Austin Aztex are the fourth USL PRO expansion
team announced for 2015, joining Colorado Springs
Switchbacks FC, Tulsa Roughnecks FC, and St Louis FC.
The addition of the Aztex grows the league’s membership
to 18 clubs for 2015.
USL PRO is the strongest U.S. men’s professional
soccer league on and off the field below and in support
6
of Major League Soccer (MLS). Focused on league stability
and franchise performance longevity, USL PRO features
14 teams in 2014, including expansion teams in Los
Angeles, Oklahoma City and Sacramento. In January
2013 USL PRO entered into a groundbreaking, multiyear partnership with MLS that features individual team
affiliations, inter-league play, and the opportunity for MLS
clubs to field a second team in USL PRO.
“Since the day we founded ATX Soccer LLC in 2011,
we have been building a foundation for professional
soccer in Austin,” noted Aztex founder and co-owner
David Markley. “We took a grass-roots approach and did
not rush the process. We took the time to form the right
local ownership group and build a solid infrastructure to
ensure the future success of Austin’s soccer team. Our
current team has already produced eight players drafted
by MLS teams in two years, and the relationship between
USL PRO and MLS provides a unique opportunity to
partner with an MLS affiliate who would place at least
four players on our roster. The decision to join USL PRO
at this time provides professional soccer to local fans next
season, a platform for year-round training and player
development, and an added catalyst as we continue
to work with community leaders in pursuit of a future
soccer-specific stadium in which we will play.”
The Austin Aztex currently play at House Park, a
5,500 seat stadium located near downtown Austin. The
Aztex enjoy a strong home field advantage at House
Park, where more than 4,250 fans attended the USL PDL
Championship game in 2013.
About Bobby Epstein
Bobby Epstein is the managing general partner of
Prophet Capital Management as well as the co-founder
and chairman of the Circuit of the Americas (COTA).
Epstein has been at the forefront of bringing major
sporting events to Austin including Formula 1 USGP and
ESPN X Games.
About Paul Thornton
Paul Thornton was the founder and president of
Bravo Entertainment, a leading live entertainment
promoter, and is currently president of TAG Presents.
He is a 20 year veteran of producing large scale events
including concerts, sporting events, and festivals. Since
moving to the Austin area he has produced the concerts
at the Austin360 Amphitheater, the Formula 1 USGP
entertainment, the Austin Fan Fest, RedFest, and the
ESPN X Games Festival.

There was no better option for a home field
advantage than Our House. The Austin Aztex and the
loud local support provided for an intimidating venue
in the USL PDL as the Aztex held home field advantage
during their march to the league championship in 2013.
House Park has served as the home of prior soccer
teams in Austin’s history and—considering the central
location and nearby pubs—serves as the de facto soccer
hub of the city. The 6,000-capacity stadium is a short
walking distance from local pubs, Shoal Creek, Austin’s
famous 6th Street, Zilker Park, a skate park, the Austin
Recreation Center and The University of Texas at Austin.
House Park has been a significant venue for sports
in Austin. The playing surface is covered with FieldTurf
for all-purpose and year round use. It hosts high school
soccer and football and games for Austin, Anderson,
McCallum and Lanier High Schools.
House Park is named for Colonel E.M. House, a
national political leader from Austin who served as a
principal advisor to President Woodrow Wilson. Colonel
House donated the land of his horse pasture to the City of
Austin for public use. The East Stands were built in 1937
and the facility opened in 1939.

AZTEX claim 2013 pdl Championship
The Austin Aztex claimed their first championship
as they rallied from an early deficit to defeat the Thunder
Bay Chill 3-1 in front of a crowd of 4,253 fans at House
Park in the 2013 PDL Championship Game presented by
Nike. Sito Seoane capped an outstanding postseason,
and claimed Most Valuable Player honors, as he scored
twice and added an assist to lead the Aztex’s victory,
while Thunder Bay was forced to play most of the game
with 10 men as goalkeeper Stephen Paterson was sent off
early in the contest.
Seoane had five goals in four games in the PDL
Playoffs, including the game-winning goal in each of the
Aztex’s four victories on the way to the championship. He
pulled the Aztex even from the penalty spot following
Pedro Adan’s early goal had given the Chill the lead.
Seoane then added a second midway through the first
half before assisting on Khiry Shelton’s finish just before
the break.
“It’s unbelievable,” Seoane said. “Thanks to my
teammates, they were supporting me the whole
season, and without them I couldn’t have done this. It’s
unbelievable, to win a championship in front of all of your
fans. There are no words.”
The game got off to a flying start, with Thunder Bay
taking the lead in just the second minute. After a long
throw-in from the left by Paul Dillon was half-cleared by
the Aztex, the ball came to Zetroy Robertson 20 yards
from goal. His long-range shot was redirected on frame in
front, and parried away by Austin goalkeeper Devin Cook,
only for Adan to be on hand to blast home the rebound.
Austin responded immediately, and momentum
swung in their direction two minutes later as Tony Rocha
slid a pass through the Thunder Bay defense that allowed
Kris Tyrpak to break in on goal. Paterson came out to
challenge, but brought down Tyrpak just inside the
penalty area, which earned not only a penalty kick but
also a red card for the goalkeeper. Daniel Alvarado came
on to face Seoane’s penalty kick, but went the wrong way
as Seoane’s shot went into the upper-left corner for his
fourth goal of the playoffs.
“When they scored, we were like, ‘we’re here, we’re
in the national championship, we’ve got to step it up,
we’ve got to come back and get one back as fast as we
can’,” Tyrpak said. “That run that I did, me and Tony have
been working on that all year, we worked on it every day
in practice, and we just made eye contact and he put it
where I needed to be. Unfortunately for the goalie, he
came out, caught my foot and we tied it up.”
With a man advantage, the Aztex tried to drive home
their advantage quickly as Shelton threatened twice on
the left side. Austin was able to take the lead in the 22nd
22
minute as Zack Pope overlapped and sent in a low, nearpost cross from the left side that Tyrpak beat his man to.
The ball deflected perfectly to Seoane eight yards out,
who lashed home a finish into the roof of the net from
just outside the left corner of the six-yard box.
Thunder Bay’s best chances to get back on level
terms mostly came from set pieces, with Dillon’s long
throw-ins a consistent threat. The Chill came close in the
45th minute as a header by Axel Sjoberg went straight at
Cook, but saw the hill they had to climb get steeper in the
first minute of stoppage time as Seoane played a pass to
Shelton in the right channel, and the rangy forward rifled
a low shot into the left corner for a 3-1 halftime lead.
The Chill came out aggressively to start the second
half, and were offered an avenue back into the game in
the 54th minute as Sullivan Silva was brought down in
the penalty area by Aaron Guillen. Dillon stepped up to
take the kick, but sent his shot wide of the left post as
the Aztex held onto their two-goal lead. The Chill were
able to continue to generate chances from set pieces,
Nolan Intermoia’s header forcing a save from Cook in the
58th minute, but as the second half wore on, the chances
became fewer as playing down a man took its toll.
Austin did have chances to add to its lead, the best
coming to Tucker Hume as he was played into the left
side of the penalty area in the 66th minute, only for
Alvarado to come off his line quickly and make a fine
save. Jesus Cortes also had a pair of opportunities, both
of which missed the target, but they were academic
as the Aztex sent their fans, led by Eberly’s Army, into
massive celebrations as the final whistle went.

The Austin Aztex faced stiff opposition from Oklahoma City in the USL PDL
season opener Saturday night, but were able to score two late goals in a 2-1
victory.
Westlake High School’s Tucker Hume sealed the victory for the Aztex in the
88th minute when the 6-foot-5-inch defender sent a looping headed shot into
the far side of the opponent’s goal. Justin Franz, from Cedar Park, provided the
assist with a long throw in.
The Aztex faced tremendous pressure from Oklahoma City FC, who were
playing their first home game in their inaugural season. The Aztex were able to
maintain ball possession in their defensive half, but could not connect passes
and create scoring chances early on.
Meanwhile, Oklahoma City FC capitalized on an Aztex foul. Oklahoma
City’s Adam Black scored for the home team when he kicked a left-footed free
kick that curved around the Aztex wall and into the goal.
The Aztex were forced to make early adjustments, sending Tucker Hume in
at forward for Jacob Powell to add height to the Aztex attack.
“Paul (Dalglish) told me to establish a physical presence at the top,” Hume
said. “My job was to lay the ball the ball off to my teammates, help win the
second ball, and lay it off to Andres Cuero and then get into position to score.”
Trailing by a goal at halftime, the Aztex retooled the attack to target Hume
up top as a target striker. The adjustment allowed the team to play the ball
through the air. Near the 60th minute, the Aztex switched their formation with
Kris Tyrpak moving up front into a 4-4-2.The adjustment allowed the Aztex to
build momentum in their attack. Late substitutions, including Walker Hume
and Oumar Djiba, gave the Aztex a tall, physical presence for any ball fought in
the air.
The second half adjustments for the Aztex paid off as they were able
to maintain possession and connect on short passes to create dangerous
attacking opportunities. The Aztex found the game-tying goal in the 77th
minute when Tony Rocha’s free kick deflected off of a defender and found the
back of the net.
“I didn’t even see it go into goal, I just saw the net move,” Rocha said. “ I was
aiming for the right post to see if someone could come in and flick it in. I saw
my teammates celebrate so I started celebrating.”
The goal eased the pressure off the Aztex to find the equalizer. With that
pressure off of the Aztex, they mounted the attack and had Oklahoma City FC
on their heels.
Hume’s goal ten minutes later sealed the victory for the Aztex. The play
started along the sideline when Justin Franz tossed in a long throw in. Tucker
Hume was able to get into position and hit a looping header into the far side
netting of the opponent’s goal.

The Austin Aztex defense held strong and needed only one goal from
defender Aaron Guillen to secure the 1-0 win over the Houston Dutch Lions
Saturday evening at House Park. The win and three points allow for the Aztex
to remain on top of the Mid South division with six points, two points ahead of
the Laredo Heat.
“It was a really hard game,” Aztex defender Aaron Guillen said. “Obviously
they were going to try and come in here, take the three points from us and at
least get a tie. Fortunately we got three points, we are in first place now. We
have got to keep working.”
The Aztex defense stole the show as the defenders were able to deflect
pressure from the Dutch Lions attack throughout the game. At one point
during the match, the Aztex had as many as eight players who played defense
for their respective college teams to hold the lead.
The Houston Dutch Lions proved to be a physical side that looked to
challenge the Aztex, with both teams matching up in 4-2-3-1 formations.
“We thought they were going to play a 4-3-3,” Aztex Head Coach Paul
Dalglish said. “So we prepared as if they were going to play a 4-3-3 but when
they came out in a 4-2-3-1 we had to change a little bit, change the game plan.
The players managed to adapt and grind out a gritty win.”
Chuy Cortes provided dangerous attacking runs into the middle of the
attacking half and nearly scored in the 19th minute when he ripped a shot
that carried just wide of the goal. Cortes played with great determination to
create opportunities and showed creativity with the ball to give his teammates
scoring chances, much to the pleasure of the home crowd of 1,205 who
watched the team’s league home opener.
“It was exciting to be back and have all the fans supporting us,” Cortes said.
”It is definitely an advantage that we have on the field when we are playing. It
gives me an extra boost on the field because it gives you adrenaline that you
need when you play.”
A pair of defenders came through to deliver the lone goal of the game in
the 32nd minute. Aztex midfielder Sito Seoane sent a corner into the penalty
area for Westlake High graduate and Aztex defender Walker Hume, whose
6-foot-5-inch frame helped head the ball across goal to fellow defender Guillen,
who headed the ball into the back of the net.
“We have been practicing the corners,” Guillen said on the scoring play.
“When the ball comes off the corner, we can look for the big boys and I just get
the trash out in front. I saw the ball in front of me and I put it in.”
After the goal, the Aztex solidified the defense to protect the lead. At one
point in the second half, the Aztex had as many as eight players on the field
who played on the back line for their respective collegiate teams.
The home town squad calmly deflected any Dutch Lions attack. Making
their Austin Aztex debut Saturday evening were Damian Rosales, Robbie
Derschang, and Alesi Osorio.

The Austin Aztex (3-0-0) needed only one goal and the defense took care
of the rest in a 1-0 victory over the Laredo Heat (1-1-1) Saturday evening at
House Park. The lone goal came on a free kick from Seth Casiple, who was
subbed on merely a few seconds earlier in the 58th minute.
“It was a great win against a top side,” Aztex Head Coach Paul Dalglish said.
“Anytime we can get three points against Laredo it is a great achievement. “
The Aztex were able to maintain possession throughout extended periods
of the game, working their way into attacking opportunities from all parts of
the field. The Aztex outshot the Heat 13 to 3 in the game.
The Aztex defense recovered from adversity early in the first half when
defender Leone Cruz had to leave the game due to injury. Michael King
stepped in as a substitute for his debut and was able to stifle the Heat’s
attacking players.
In the 56th minute, Heat defender Omar Lopez received a caution after
a hard foul on Chuy Cortes near the edge of the penalty area. With a free
kick opportunity, Dalglish called in the reinforcements for a rare three-player
substitution.
The Aztex, who now have all players in town from their college seasons,
were able to utilize their depth. This was most evident in the 57th minute, when
Dalglish made three substitutions at once to revitalize the front line of attack
in one swift move. Seth Casiple, Eddy Campbell, and Tucker Hume entered the
game for Chuy Cortes, Andres Cuero, and Sito Seoane.
Casiple would steal the show a few seconds later on the free kick.
Casiple had as strong a debut as anyone could ask for with the Aztex when
he stepped onto the field and was immediately asked to take the shot on a
free kick from just outside the penalty area. Casiple’s shot flew past diving Heat
goalkeeper Emmanuel Frias.
Later in the second half, the University of Maryland duo of Dan Metzger
and Mikey Ambrose stepped onto the field to help the Aztex defense protect
the lead against the mounting Laredo Heat attack. The Aztex were able to
dispatch the Heat attack and maintain control of midfield, thus controlling the
game to the final whistle.
Aztex goalkeeper Devin Cook was quiet for most of the game, but came
through in a big way in the 75th minute. A Heat attacker broke down the
right side of the field and sent in a quick pass across the middle of the field,
where the Heat forward was ready to shoot. Cook pounced on the pass for
the interception and his sure hands secured the ball to eliminate the threat.
Securing the ball was important, as Heat goalkeeper Emmanuel Frias frequently
bobbled the ball, which was slippery from the rain-soaked field.
With the victory, the Aztex remain tied for first place in the USL PDL Mid
South Division with Oklahoma City FC, who have nine points, but have played
an extra game than the Aztex.

The Austin Aztex (4-0-0) and Oklahoma City FC (3-3-0) met at House Park
Saturday evening looking to make a statement to the USL PDL and the Mid
South Division. Austin’s statement rang louder.
The Aztex scored late in the first half, added two more goals in the second
half, and held off a OKC FC rally to win 3-2. The win gives the Aztex sole
possession of the division lead with 12 points and adds padding to the rest of
the competition.
The Aztex attack was relentless from the beginning of the game, forcing
multiple corners, outshooting their opponent 11 to 1 throughout the first
half. Eddy Campbell and Kris Tyrpak formed a fearsome duo on the flanks, and
nearly connected for multiple scoring opportunities.
The Aztex high pressure defending continues to subdue opponents. From
the forwards to the back line, the Aztex allow very little time and space for the
opposition to play. The midfield trio of Dan Metzger, Zachary Garcia, and Tony
Rocha highlight that work ethic.
The Aztex were unable to score until the waning seconds during stoppage
time of the first half. Seoane took the loose ball from the middle of the field
and navigated his way through the OKC FC defense. Once clear in front of goal,
Seoane shot left past OKC FC goalkeeper Ray Clark.
The Aztex were able to score quickly once the second half began. Kris
Tyrpak received the ball along the right side of the field and worked his way
toward the middle. He then proceeded to rip a left-footed shot from about 23
yards away for the second goal of the evening.
OKC FC would not go down without a fight, and answered back with a goal
of their own two minutes later when Niall Crick hit a volleyed shot past Aztex
goalkeeper Devin Cook.
The Aztex third goal would not have happened without the hustle of
Tyrpak. Campbell maneuvered his way into space along the left side of the field
and sent a cross to the middle of the field. However, nobody was near the ball
and all players gave up on the ball to let it roll out of bounds. Except Tyrpak.
Tyrpak hustled to the ball and was able to move down the line, forcing a
shot that was parried out of bounds.
Tyrpak would score the game-winning goal in the 60th minute on the
ensuing corner kick. Seoane sent the corner kick into the near post and Tyrpak
connected for a strong headed shot. Oklahoma City FC pulled the game back
within one goal when Black scored in the 73rd minute, but were unable to pull
the game even.
OKC FC’s Adam Black put his team back within one goal when he headed a
ball past Aztex goalkeeper Devin Cook. However, the Aztex were able to buckle
down for the final minutes of the game to secure the win.

The Austin Aztex (5-0-0) needed two goals at the closing minutes of the
game Saturday evening to win 2-1, keeping their undefeated record intact as
they dispatched the Houston Dutch Lions (2-3-1).
Aztex defender Leone Cruz started the rally in the 82nd minute when
he converted a penalty kick and Tucker Hume finished the comeback with a
last-second diving header in stoppage time to silent Woodforest National Bank
Stadium.
Both teams fought hard throughout the entire match, as players from both
squads worked tirelessly to get to the ball. The Aztex tested the Dutch Lions by
maintaining possession for long periods of the game. The Dutch Lions’ attacks
came through counterattacks involving the attacking duo Jelle van Kruijssen
and Thomas Verhaar.
Aztex midfielder Tony Rocha nearly scored in the 29th minute when he
took the ball through the middle of the field and fired a shot with pace from
about 20 yards away from goal. Dutch Lions goalkeeper Jaimy Schaap stretched
out to punch the ball over the crossbar.
The Dutch Lions were able to open the scoring in the 40th minute when
Jelle van Kruijssen intercepted a clearance from the Aztex defense and slid the
ball past Aztex goalkeeper Devin Cook.
Dalglish made an adjustment at halftime and decided to put an extra
man in the middle to disrupt Houston’s 4-4-2 formation. Meanwhile, the Aztex
continued to test the Dutch Lions defense through attacking runs from out
wide by Chuy Cortes, Kris Tyrpak, Max Gunderson and Mikey Ambrose.
However, it seemed for a span that the Dutch Lions had the Aztex against
the ropes. In the 68th minute, Verhaar worked his way to the right side of
the area and ripped a low shot that rattled off of the near post. Minutes later,
Verhaar gave it another go when he took a shot from the top of the penalty
area. Aztex goalkeeper Devin Cook had to make an acrobatic diving save in
order to keep the Aztex within one goal.
In the 70th minute, still down by a goal, Dalglish brought in Eddy Campbell
and Tucker Hume to continue the attack. Tucker Hume proved to have a critical
role as a spark to the Aztex rally.
The Aztex were able to tie the game in the 82nd minute when the referee
awarded a penalty kick to the Aztex after Tucker Hume was held by his
defender while going for a ball in the penalty area.
Aztex defender Leone Cruz took the penalty kick and sent a low, driven
shot to the left past Dutch Lions goalkeeper Schaap.
However, the Aztex continued to press and would not settle for just a tie.
Their hard work paid off during stoppage time when Tony Rocha was able to
send a cross in front of goal. Tucker Hume scored with a diving header.
The Austin Aztex (6-0-0) set a franchise record with eight goals scored as
they remain undefeated on the season after they defeated the El Paso Patriots
(1-6-1).
“It was an excellent performance,” Aztex Head Coach Paul Dalglish said. “It
was a good time to catch El Paso as they were tired from yesterday’s game. It
was still a very clinical performance from our guys. We’ve worked very hard at
practice to work towards that level of performance that we played today.”
From the beginning of the game, the Aztex midfield trio of Tony Rocha,
Daniel Metzger, and Leone Cruz were able to control the middle of the field.
By moving the ball quickly and methodically, the Aztex were able to create
chances early and often.
The Aztex scoring outburst started in the 16th minute when Patriots
defender Pablo Rodriguez was called for a hand ball in the penalty area,
rewarding the Aztex with a penalty kick. Aztex forward Andres Cuero took the
penalty kick and hit the ball low and to the right of Patriots goalkeeper Agustin
Rey.
With the early lead, the Aztex were able to remain patient offensively. The
team worked tirelessly throughout the week on ball circulation – keeping the
ball and making the opponent chase it.
Cuero and the Aztex continued to mount pressure on the Patriots defense,
adding two more goals in the first half. Cuero broke free down the left side of
the field and sent in a cross which was headed home by Kris Tyrpak in the 22nd
minute. In the 32nd minute, Cuero got his chance to score his second goal of
the game when he headed in a pass from Aztex defender Mikey Ambrose.
The Aztex continued to put the pedal to the metal in the second half with
five more goals.
Sito Seoane and Tucker Hume would add two goals apiece while Ambrose
scored his first goal of the season. However, even with the offensive outburst,
the Aztex defense worked to contain the Patriots to only three shots while the
Aztex fired away with 22 shots.
Still, the eight goals is an extra sweet spot for the team. With the barrage,
the Aztex set a new record of goals scored, which was originally set in a 7-0
victory over the Texas Dutch Lions in 2012.
“It’s always nice to score eight goals, but it is about the way we did it,”
Aztex defender and team captain Zack Pope said. “A lot of people were getting
involved, keeping possession for majority of the game.”

The Austin Aztex (7-0-0) maintained control throughout the game
and were able to defeat the Houston Dutch Lions 3-0 Tuesday evening at
WoodForest National Bank Stadium.
The effort was a complete performance for the Aztex, who extend their
franchise-record winning streak to seven games to tie the Thunder Bay Chill
with the best record in the USL PDL.
“Our goal is to keep winning each individual game,” Aztex Head Coach Paul
Dalglish said. “If we win and achieve our goal most weeks, we will achieve our
big goal.”
In the first half, the Aztex maintained possession for extended periods of
the half. The Aztex were able to progress the ball forward into the Dutch Lions
goal area, but were unable to capitalize on their chances.
The Dutch Lions nearly jumped out to an early lead in the eighth minute
when Jelle van Kruijssen was able to get his foot on a cross in front of the Aztex
goal. However, his touch was off target as the ball rolled just wide of the far
post.
The Aztex answered back with a chance of their own in the ninth minute
when Aztex forward Sito Seoane took an attempt on goal on a free kick 28
yards out. Dutch Lions goalkeeper Jaimy Schaap needed to make a sprawling
dive to punch the ball out of bounds for a corner.
Three minutes later, Campbell stole the ball from a defender for a
breakaway, but the determined Dutch Lions defense were able to recover and
prevent Campbell from getting a clean shot attempt.
The Dutch Lions opened the game in a 4-4-2 formation. To help counter
the formation, the Aztex utilized Zachary Garcia to fall back deeper to receive
the ball and create space in the midfield. The flexibility of the Aztex formation
allowed the players to adapt quickly to changes.
The Aztex were able to break the scoreless deadlock early in the second
half when forward Andres Cuero was able to collect the ball from an errant
Dutch Lions clearance. Cuero, at the top of the Dutch Lions’ own penalty area,
was able to make the turn and fire a shot past Schaap.
Five minutes later, Campbell made up for his failed attempt in the first
half when he muscled his way into space down the right side of the line for a
breakaway. The speedy forward was able to race the ball down and send in a
pass to Aztex forward Kris Tyrpak. Tyrpak calmly touched the ball into the back
of the net for the second goal.
The Aztex attack continued with a third goal in the 70th minute when
Seoane sent a lead pass into the middle of the Dutch Lions’ defensive half.
Campbell beat his defender to the ball for a one-on-one with Schaap. Campbell
shot the ball past the Dutch Lions goalkeeper.
The Aztex currently lead the USL PDL Mid South Division with 21 points,
and are six points clear of OKC FC with a game in hand.

The Austin Aztex (7-0-1) and Oklahoma City FC (5-3-1) gave each other
their best shot, but both teams had to settle for their first draw of the season
after a scoreless match Saturday evening in Oklahoma City.
While the Aztex were unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunities,
they were able to extend their opponent’s scoreless streak to 318 minutes and
have not allowed a goal since June 8 versus the Houston Dutch Lions.
Holding OKC FC, who have the PDL’s leading goal scorer in Adam Black, to
a scoreless result was no easy task for the Aztex. However, Zachary Garcia was
up to the task and limited Black to only one shot.
“He is an attacking player and it just happened we were matched
up throughout the game,” Garcia said. “Obviously coming in we knew he
was a good player so I try to do all I can to shut him down and hopefully I
accomplished that with zero goals allowed today.”
The Aztex carried the advantage through the first half. In the first 15
minutes, both teams fought to establish dominance in the midfield. The Aztex
were able to attack wide for a quick barrage of attacks, forcing five corner kicks.
As the half wore on, the Aztex worked to maintain possession.
The best opportunity for the Aztex to score came early in the first half
when forward Kris Tyrpak received a lead pass for a breakaway. OKC FC
goalkeeper Bryan Byars was able to get off his line and block Tyrpak’s shot.
Minutes later, Tyrpak was able to take a strong volleyed shot in front of goal,
but Byars was able to contain the shot attempt.
The Aztex defense continued to fluster OKC FC’s offense. Garcia helped
keep the left-footed Black to his right side, while center backs Leone Cruz
and Walker Hume communicated to the team throughout the match. OKC FC
tried to beat the Aztex out wide, but strong one-on-one defending from Max
Gunderson and Robbie Dershang thwarted their attempts.
The Aztex were able to hold off a furious volley of shots at the end of the
game. OKC FC believed they had the game-winning goal on the last play of the
game when OKC FC forward Danny Gibson hit the crossbar after a corner kick.
In the play, OKC FC had a corner kick after Gunderson made a strong play
to clear the ball out of bounds. OKC FC sent in a good clearance to the far post
and the ball was headed across the box. The ball fell to OKC FC midfielder
Danny Gibson, who ripped a shot that bounced straight down off of the
crossbar and out of bounds.
The ball bounced straight down and was kicked out of bounds.
“I looked behind me after the shot and there was three four of my guys
back there so I had faith that it wasn’t going in,” Aztex goalkeeper Devin Cook
said. “When it hit the post, my heart stopped.”
The scoreless draw is the first such result in franchise history for the Aztex
and the first scoreless draw among all competitions in the USL PDL Mid South
Division in 2013.

The Austin Aztex (8-0-1) remained undefeated on the season and inched
closer to a playoff spot when they defeated the Houston Dutch Lions (2-7-1) 4-0
Saturday night at House Park.
The win allowed for the Aztex to sweep the Dutch Lions after four matches
and extend their defensive shutout streak to 409 minutes, not having allowed a
goal since June 8.
The Aztex maintained control of the game since the opening whistle. The
team maintained possession as they looked to build their attack. The Dutch
Lions decided to sit back defensively, giving Aztex defenders Leone Cruz and
Aaron Guillen ample time to choose their passing target and move the ball
forward.
Aztex midfielders Tony Rocha and Zachary Garcia were able to take control
of midfield and switch the ball out wide. The Aztex utilized their speed out
on the left side of the field with Chuy Cortes and Robbie Derschang when
attacking, creating many scoring chances. The midfielders and attacking four
paired well with the timing of their runs and navigating the passing lanes.
Sito Seoane nearly scored for the Aztex in the seventh minute when he saw
Jaimy Schaap out of position during a breakaway. Seoane sent a long-ranged
blast that caromed off of the crossbar.
The team’s strategy paid off in the 33rd minute. Rocha lobbed a through
ball to Cortes, who worked his way into the middle of the field from the left
flank and set up Cuero. Cuero shot the ball past Dutch Lions goalkeeper Schaap
for the opening goal.
Tyrpak provided insurance with the second goal in the 40th minute after
Cuero collected the ball in front of goal after a scrum from a free kick. Cuero
saw Tyrpak make an early run and flicked the ball to Tyrpak, who hammered the
ball past Schaap.
The Aztex scored again in the final seconds of the first half when Seoane
sent in a long free kick 40 yards from goal. Cuero helped free Tyrpak during the
run in, causing two defenders to pursue Tyrpak while giving Cuero space in
front of goal. Cuero was able to get to the ball and flicked it into the net.
The Dutch Lions tried to get back into the second half with three
substitutions at halftime. However, the Aztex defense was able to contain their
efforts.
The Dutch Lions had their opportunities after rare turnovers from the
Aztex backline. However, goalkeeper Devin Cook appeared to have a personal
mission to keep the shutout streak intact and made several plays to disrupt the
Dutch Lions attack. Cook finished the game with three saves.
The Aztex added their fourth goal in the 81st minute when Aaron Guillen
headed the ball in from a corner kick from Seth Casiple.

The Austin Aztex (8-1-1) were unable to mount a comeback and were
defeated 1-0 at the hands of the four time Mid South Division champion Laredo
Heat (6-2-2) Wednesday night in Laredo.
The win ends the nine game unbeaten streak the Aztex had to begin their
league campaign. While still in first place, the game brought the Heat to within
five points of the Aztex for first place in the division with four games remaining.
With the strong playoff implications heading into the game, both squads
looked to control possession by pressing high and playing with urgency.
The Aztex had chances in the first half when they tried to thread the ball
to Kris Tyrpak through the Heat backline. However, Heat goalkeeper Emmanuel
Frias was quick to jump off his line and beat the Aztex to the ball.
The Aztex had their best opportunity in the first half when Tony Rocha
forced a turnover in the 34th minute and ran free on a breakaway. Once in the
penalty area Rocha unleashed a shot low and to the left, but Frias was able to
push the ball out of bounds.
Seven minutes later, the Heat scored what would prove to the only goal
of the game. Aztex defender Robbie Dershang made a tackle to force the ball
out of bounds on the right side of the field. The Heat were quick to throw the
ball back in down the right sideline to Juan Ibarra-Trevino. Ibarra crossed the
ball to the far post where Francisco Lara was able to shoot the ball past Aztex
goalkeeper Devin Cook.
The goal ended the Aztex shutout streak of 449 consecutive minutes.
The Aztex worked to get back into the game and made halftime
adjustments by sending in Walker and Tucker Hume, Jeff Harwell, and Zack
Pope to pressure the Heat defense.
The Aztex comeback took an uphill climb in the 69th minute when Tucker
Hume received a straight red card and was ejected after a collision with Felipe
Souza. The red card forced the Aztex to play the rest of the game with only ten
players.
Aztex goalkeer Devin Cook kept the team within one goal with a standout
effort in goal. With the Aztex pressing high and down a man, the Heat were
able to get opportunities and shots on goal. Cook stood tall and denied the
Heat from obtaining the insurance goal. Cook finished the evening with six
saves.
After the ejection, the Aztex switched to a three-man backline to help
maintain the numbers up front. Zack Pope and Aaron Guillen were able to send
the ball into the box, but were unable to find the touch to bring them even.

The Austin Aztex (9-1-1) needed two second half goals from Andres Cuero
to finish a rally and win 2-1 versus the Midland-Odessa Sockers (3-6-2).
Midland-Odessa needed to secure three points in order to keep their
playoff chances alive. With the loss, the Sockers were eliminated from
postseason contention while the Aztex continued their march toward the
Southern Conference Final Four.
The Aztex were unable to figure out the Sockers throughout the first half
as Midland-Odessa pressured the Aztex defenders and collapsed the midfield,
not allowing the Aztex to play freely. Midland-Odessa midfielder Kal Herbert
disrupted the Aztex early, forcing three shots in the opening period of the
match.
The Aztex would find themselves in a hole just a few minutes later.
In the 28th minute, the Sockers capitalized in a counter attack. Sockers
midfielder Andres Maldonaldo received a cross and had to jump up to attempt
a volley shot, but Aztex defender Aaron Guillen jumped to the ball and got
it out from beneath Maldonado. The referee called a foul on the play and
Maldonado buried the penalty kick low and to the left past Aztex goalkeeper
Devin Cook.
The game took a tumultuous tone at the end of the first half when Aztex
goalkeeper Devin Cook jumped off of his line to prevent Sockers forward Juan
Nava from getting off a shot attempt. Cook laid out to block the ball, but was
struck in the head by Nava. Cook remained down during play with an apparent
head injury, while Midland-Odessa tried to capitalize on the open goal until the
referee stopped play roughly 15 seconds later.
The play started a series of events which led to a five minute stoppage of
play. The referees issued a second yellow card to Juan Nava, forcing MidlandOdessa to finish the game with 10 players.
The Aztex regained their composure at halftime and prepared their plan
of attack. With a man advantage and needing to finds two goals in the second
half, the Aztex were patient and methodical with their passing, waiting for the
wide players to get open and create dangerous attacking plays.
The strategy paid off. While the Aztex had only five shots in the first half,
they had 16 shots in the second half.
The Aztex capitalized with a goal in the 59th minute when Chuy Cortes
sent a curling free kick from the left side of the field into the penalty area. Aztex
forward Andres Cuero leaped in front of his defender and headed the ball into
the back of the next for the equalizing goal.
After the goal, the Aztex had complete momentum in the match. The
Aztex found the game-winning goal in the 86th minute when Danny Riley
chased down a pass from Aztex midfielder Tony Rocha. Riley flicked the ball
across goal, where Cuero headed in the ball for his second goal of the evening.

The Austin Aztex (10-1-1) clinched the Mid South Division Championship
and booked their ticket to the playoffs after a 4-0 win over Oklahoma City FC
(7-4-2) Saturday night at House Park.
The match was the final home game of the regular season for the Aztex,
who finished with a perfect 7-0-0 record at House Park with 22 goals scored
while allowing only three.
“We wanted to perform well in front of our fans for our final home game,”
Aztex defender and team captain Zack Pope said. “We have prepared well this
week and all season. We put ourselves in a good position be successful and
hopefully we win these two remaining games.”
The Aztex immediately pounced on OKC FC after the opening whistle
when Aztex midfielder Tony Rocha intercepted a pass and then sent a forward
pass to Kris Tyrpak. Tyrpak navigated his way through the OKC FC defense and
shot the ball past goalkeeper Brian Byars after just 16 seconds.
Tony Rocha scored the second goal of the game in the 17th minute when
he collected the ball in front of OKC FC’s goal after Sito Seoane’s shot was
deflected. Rocha chipped the ball past Byars.
Defensively, the Aztex worked to contain Adam Black and OKC FC’s attack.
The Aztex continued with a high work rate to press OKC FC when they had
possession to make sure they would not get comfortable with the ball.
OKC FC came out of halftime revitalized and looking to climb back into the
game. For the first 25 minutes of the second half, the Aztex absorbed a flurry of
long throw ins and corner kicks from OKC FC.
Tyrpak collected his second goal of the game and the third goal for the
Aztex in the 70th minute when he re-directed Eddie Campbell’s deflected shot
in front of OKC FC’s goal, into the back of the net. Tyrpak finished his hat trick
with his third goal in the 89th minute when he received a pass from Westlake
High School alumnus Tucker Hume and hit the ball into the net.
It is the second time in the team’s first two seasons in which Tyrpak has
scored a hat trick in the team’s regular season home finale. Tyrpak received loud
applause from the crowd when he was substituted off during stoppage time.
“It felt amazing,” Tyrpak said. It was fantastic to score in front of all the fans.
It was the perfect way to end the home finale and was a great way to give back
to the fans.”
The shutout continues Devin Cook’s reign as one of the top goalkeepers in
the USL PDL. Cook is among the league leaders with eight wins, six shutouts,
and a goals against average of less than 0.500.

The Austin Aztex (11-1-1) netted five goals in the first half and cruised to
their 11th win of the season with a 6-0 win versus the Midland-Odessa Sockers
(3-8-2) Thursday evening in Midland. Six different Aztex players contributed to
the scoreline during the barrage.
Aztex head coach Paul Dalglish told the team before the game that the
ability to beat teams that had winning or losing records either home or away, is
the test of a team with championship mettle. Dalglish left the Aztex to task and
the squad made a point to give the squad a quick advantage.
The Aztex scored the first goal in the 12th minute with strong build up play
in the midfield. Aztex midfielder Tony Rocha got the ball and sent a through
ball to Kris Tyrpak. Tyrpak beat the Sockers defenders on the back line and had
a one-on-one with Sockers goalkeeper Robin Allard. Tyrpak hit the ball past
Allard for the first goal.
The Sockers almost came back with an early response when Sockers
forward Joe Munoz received a cross that dropped in between center backs
Walker Hume and Aaron Guillen. Munoz was free for a one-on-one with
goalkeeper Devin Cook, but Cook made the save as the ball sailed straight up
in the air. It appeared the Sockers would get the ball in off the rebound, but
Guillen was able to clear the ball away with an overhead kick.
Rocha added the second goal of the game in the 28th minute when he
worked his way along the baseline and hit a precise shot that caromed off the
bottom of the crossbar and bounced in the goal.
Aztex midfielder Chuy Cortes, playing in defense Thursday night, scored
the third goal in the 30th minute when his free kick glanced off of a Sockers
defender while on its way to goal. Cortes contributed to the fourth goal of the
game in the 34th minute when he worked his way along the right flank and
sent in a cross to the middle of the penalty area. Aztex forward Khiry Shelton
hammered the ball with a right-footed volley into the back of the Sockers net.
Shelton’s goal came in his 2013 debut for the Aztex.
The Aztex fifth goal came courtesy of Sito Seoane, who received a pass
from Kris Tyrpak and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper for the fifth goal of
the half. In the 78th minute, Rocha set up Walker Hume for the sixth goal of the
game.
The Aztex defense absorbed the pressure from the Sockers in the second
half for their second consecutive shutout.
With Thursday night’s win, the Aztex are assured to have at least a share of
the best record in the USL PDL Southern Conference at season’s end.

The Austin Aztex (11-1-2) faced stiff competition from the El Paso Patriots
and had to settle for a 2-2 draw Saturday night at Patriot Stadium in El Paso.
With the game, the Aztex end their regular season campaign as the top seed in
the USL PDL Southern Conference.
The Patriots, who sat at the bottom of the division table throughout the
season, looked to close out their season on a high note and stepped up to the
challenge versus the Aztex.
The Patriots were able to jump to an early lead in the 12th minute when
the referee awarded the Patriots a penalty kick after Aztex defender Leone
Cruz appeared to foul their opponent. Patriots midfielder Enrique Cervantes
took the penalty kick and shot the ball to the left past Aztex goalkeeper John
Kaschak.
The Aztex were able to come back with a quick response in the 23rd
minute when forward Khiry Shelton cut toward the middle of the field and
curled a shot past diving Patriots goalkeeper Agustin Rey.
Leone Cruz put the Aztex ahead before halftime. Aztex midfielder Jeff
Harwell sent a free kick into the Patriots area. Aztex defender Aaron Guillen was
able to get a glancing header on the ball to redirect the ball. Rey pounced on
the ball but then bobbled the ball and it sprang loose. Leone Cruz hustled to
the ball and slammed it into the back of the net for the second goal.
The comeback gave the Aztex the 2-1 lead heading into halftime.
The Patriots were able to answer back in the second half when Patriots
midfielder Jose Moreno collected the rebound following a sensational reaction
save Kaschak. Moreno then slid the ball past Kaschak. The Aztex would press
the Patriots for much of the remainder of the game, but neither team was able
to find the elusive winning goal.
The Aztex nearly escaped with a goal at the end of the game when the
Aztex kicked the ball deep into the Patriots area. Two Patriot defenders eased
off the ball for Rey to get the ball and Shelton hustled to the ball and took the
ball from the Patriots. With an open goal, Shelton fired away for the open goal
but a Patriot defender was able to scramble back for an off-the-line save.
The Aztex finished the regular season with 35 points through 14 games, an
improvement over the 29 points through 16 games from the squads inaugural
2012 regular season. Once again, the Aztex were among the league leaders in
goals scored whole a leader in defense.
“I am very proud of the team and the entire club,” Cruz said. “It is good to
be part of an organization to do that for the first time and to bring the playoffs
back to Austin. That is very important to us that we accomplished our goals but
we are not done yet.”

The Austin Aztex (12-1-2) continued their strong form at House Park and
defeated the Panama City Beach Pirates 4-0 Friday evening in front of 2,481
fans.
The Aztex advance to face their division rival Laredo Heat to decide the
Southern Conference Champion on Saturday, July 27. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. at
House Park. Laredo advanced to the title game earlier in the afternoon with a
2-0 victory over Southeast Division Champion Ocala Stampede.
The Aztex were quick to jump to a lead in the ninth minute after Aztex
forward Sito Seoane collected a rebound from midfielder Tony Rocha’s shot and
slid the ball past Pirates goalkeeper Sean Lewis.
Aztex forward Khiry Shelton added the second goal of the first half in the
37th minute. Aztex forward Kris Tyrpak received the ball along the right side
in midfield and sent in a curling cross toward the middle of the field toward
Seoane. Seoane, in an offside position, let the ball glide past him, which
allowed Shelton to race past his defender to get to the ball. Shelton was alone
for a one-on-one with Lewis and he juked by Lewis and emphatically hit the
ball into the empty net from point blank range.
“I have to thank Paul (Dalglish) a lot,” Shelton said on his performance with
the team. “He has had patience with me. It’s different because he is having us
play a certain way. I want to thank him for giving me that opportunity. “
Eager to get back into the game after halftime, the Pirates made two
halftime subs. However, the Aztex defense was able to calmly retain possession
of the ball and absorb the attack from the Pirates.
The Aztex put the game out of reach with their third goal in the 51st
minute. This time, Shelton came up with the assist when he sent a pass toward
Aztex forward Andres Cuero, who launched a powerful shot about 15 yards
from goal after a strong sequence of consecutive passes.
Austin collected their fourth goal after Aztex forward Tucker Hume was
pulled down for a foul in the penalty area. Aztex defender Leone Cruz calmly hit
the penalty kick into the net for the goal in the 89th minute.
Austin is currently 8-0 in PDL play at House Park this season. The Aztex
defeated the Laredo Heat 1-0 in their only matchup at House Park this season
on May 25, but the Heat defeated Austin 1-0 later in the season in Laredo for
the Aztex only loss of the season on July 3.
“It’s going to be a tough game,” Aztex forward Sito Seoane said. “They have
a really good team, but both teams will be playing on back to back days. We are
playing at home and we need to keep working as hard as we are.”
The Austin Aztex (13-1-2) defense remained stingy and two goals
were enough to dispatch the Laredo Heat to win the Southern Conference
Championship Saturday evening in front of a franchise record 2,673 fans at
House Park.
“It’s amazing,” Aztex forward Khiry Shelton said. “Everybody’s been working
hard not just to get here but to keep going.”
Laredo had a quick start to their match as they pressed Austin’s defenders
into early turnovers as they attempted to build their attack from the back.
However, the Aztex defenders were able to get on track and stifled Laredo’s
attack.
The Aztex jumped to a lead in the 25th minute when defender Leone Cruz
sent a perfect long ball from the back line to break forward Khiry Shelton free
for a one-on-one with Heat goalkeeper Emmanuel Frias. Frias was able to steer
Shelton away from goal, leaving the Heat goal exposed. Shelton turned and
sent a pass back to Sito Seoane, who smashed the ball in for the first goal.
“We were trying different things and I noticed that Khiry had a little bit of
space,” Cruz said. “I told myself from the time before that if I could get it to him
it would get us maybe an opportunity to score. Khiry was on the same page.”
Shelton remained the difference maker throughout the game. Shelton’s
size and speed created mismatches throughout the game as Laredo tried to
come up with a solution to the tall forward.
Shelton clinched the game for the Aztex in the 86th minute when Austin
connected a series of passes to find Tucker Hume open in front of goal. Hume
made the unselfish play to pass the ball to Shelton, who hammered the ball
home.
The Aztex move on to the USL PDL League Championships, where they
will face the winners of the remaining conference champions in a singleelimination final four tournament. The location will be held at one of the four
cities. Austin has submitted their bid to host the tournament.
“Preparation,” Cruz said on what was next for the Aztex. “We don’t know
what’s going to happen or where we are going to be playing. We know that
there is going to be another game so we are going to treat it like any other
game and be focused.”

The Austin Aztex (14-1-2) needed only one goal from Sito Seoane and
allowed their defense to continue to shut down their opponents to advance to
the USL PDL Championship game Sunday, Aug. 2 at House Park.
The game took a physical start through the first half as the Aztex looked to
maintain possession of the ball and dictate their pace to the game. However,
the Nor’easters were quick to knock the Aztex off of the ball and not allow the
Aztex to get comfortable at their home field.
The Aztex defense were also able to contain Ocean City’s attack
throughout the opening thirty minutes. Ocean City had their first chance to
score when Nor’easter forward Zoncher Dennis beat an offside trap and was
alone for a one-on-one with Aztex goalkeeper Devin Cook. Cook was quick off
of his line and was able to thwart the scoring attempt by Dennis.
The save was the beginning of a series of acrobatic and clutch saves for
Cook, a USL PDL finalist for Young (U21) Player of the Year and also Goalkeeper
of the Year. Cook finished the evening with six saves and pushed his season
shutout total to 11.
The Aztex scored the lone goal of the game in the 52nd minute when Zack
Pope made a penetrating run along the left side of Ocean City’s penalty area. A
defender knocked the ball out of bounds and Pope, the Aztex captain, had the
presence of mind to make a quick throw in to Sito Seoane in the middle of the
area. Seoane took a first touch that hit the ball straight up and then blasted a
left-footed a full volley. The ball caromed off the inside part of the far post and
into the back of the net.
“The ball was bouncing, but I didn’t doubt it,” Seoane said. “It’s awesome,
tonight we’re going to enjoy it, but it’s not over, we’ve got one more game.
Thunder Bay is a really good team, so we’re going to have to be ready.”
Seoane chose a fortuitous time to be the hero for the Aztex – not only was
it the league semifinal, but the organization was giving out Seoane trading
cards at the front gate. The goal was Seoane’s third for the Aztex during
postseason play.
The Aztex advance to the USL League Championship match, where they
will face the regular season champion Thunder Bay Chill (15-1-1) from Ontario.
The Chill advanced to the title game after they defeated Victoria Highlanders
FC 2-0 earlier Friday afternoon.
“We’re excited,” Aztex midfielder Tony Rocha said. “We have never been in
this situation before and we want to bring a championship to this great city.”

The Austin Aztex claimed their first championship as they rallied from an
early deficit to defeat the Thunder Bay Chill 3-1 in the 2013 PDL Championship
Game presented by Nike on Sunday night. Sito Seoane capped an outstanding
postseason, and claimed Most Valuable Player honors, as he scored twice and
added an assist to lead the Aztex’s victory, while Thunder Bay was forced to
play most of the game with 10 men as goalkeeper Stephen Paterson was sent
off early in the contest.
Seoane had five goals in four games in the PDL Playoffs. He pulled the
Aztex even from the penalty spot following Pedro Adan’s early goal had given
the Chill the lead. Seoane then added a second midway through the first half
before assisting on Khiry Shelton’s finish just before the break.
The game got off to a flying start, with Thunder Bay taking the lead in
just the second minute. After a long throw-in from the left by Paul Dillon was
half-cleared by the Aztex, the ball came to Zetroy Robertson 20 yards from
goal. His long-range shot was redirected on frame in front, and parried away by
Austin goalkeeper Devin Cook, only for Adan to be on hand to blast home the
rebound.
Austin responded immediately, and momentum swung in their direction
two minutes later as Tony Rocha slid a pass through the Thunder Bay defense
that allowed Kris Tyrpak to break in on goal. Paterson came out to challenge,
but brought down Tyrpak just inside the penalty area, which earned not only a
penalty kick but also a red card for the goalkeeper. Daniel Alvarado came on to
face Seoane’s penalty kick, but went the wrong way as Seoane’s shot went into
the upper-left corner for his fourth goal of the playoffs.
With a man advantage, the Aztex tried to drive home their advantage
quickly as Shelton threatened twice on the left side. Austin was able to take the
lead in the 22nd minute as Zack Pope overlapped and sent in a low, near-post
cross from the left side that Tyrpak beat his man to. The ball deflected perfectly
to Seoane eight yards out, who lashed home a finish into the roof of the net
from just outside the left corner of the six-yard box.
The Chill came close in the 45th minute as a header by Axel Sjoberg
went straight at Cook, but saw the hill they had to climb get steeper in the
first minute of stoppage time as Seoane played a pass to Shelton in the right
channel, and the rangy forward rifled a low shot into the left corner for a 3-1
halftime lead.
The Chill were able to continue to generate chances from set pieces, Nolan
Intermoia’s header forcing a save from Cook in the 58th minute, but as the
second half wore on, the chances became fewer as playing down a man took
its toll.

The Austin Aztex stood their ground and defeated the NTX Rayados 3-0
to advance to the Second Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup despite
playing 65 minutes with a 10-man squad. With the win, the Aztex will host USL
Pro team the Wilmington Hammerheads at House Park on Tuesday, May 21 at
7:30 p.m. for their Second Round matchup.
The Aztex returned to familiar grounds at House Park and to the boisterous
chants of the home crowd. With a game under their belts before kickoff
combined with being at home, the team played fluidly through the opening
moments, involving overlapping attacking runs from defense.
The Aztex took an aggressive start against their USASA opponents. Kris
Tyrpak nearly scored in the third minute after Tony Rocha sent a cross. Andres
Cuero found the pass first, but laid off for Tyrpak to take the shot, but the
forward’s shot violently bounced off of the crossbar. Just three minutes later,
Sito Seoane was able to get in a shot opportunity, but the ball went wide.
The Aztex scored early in the first half when Cuero, a Westlake High School
graduate, collected a rebound in front of goal from Sito Seoane’s shot attempt
flicked the ball toward goal. NTX Rayados goalkeeper made a diving attempt to
save the shot, but it was ruled that the ball had already crossed the goal line for
the opening goal.
The one goal lead early in the game was fortunate as the Aztex would find
themselves with a number disadvantage after Aztex defender Aaron Guillen
was issues a straight red card for a foul on NTX Rayados goalkeeper Raul
Herrera. Aztex Head Coach Paul Dalglish quickly adjusted for the loss of his
defender by pulling midfielder Chuy Cortes out of the game for Westlake High
graduate Walker Hume.
“When we got reduced to ten men, we had to adapt the way we play a
little bit,” Dalglish said.
With the goal in hand, the 10-man Aztex were able to be patient
defensively, causing the NTX Rayados attack to try and press to take advantage
of the extra attacker, but the Rayados were frequently dispossessed.
The Aztex added to the lead in the 32nd minute when Tyrpak received a
pass along the right side of the penalty area and had an opening. Tyrpak’s shot
was deflected off of Rayados defender Clifford Spence, which redirected the
shot to squeeze by the near post for an own goal.
With the insurance goal in hand and with a 10-man squad, the Aztex
maintained possession throughout the second half. The squad was able to sit
back and calmly absorb pressure from the Rayados attack and answer their
rebuttal through dangerous counter attacks. The Aztex sealed the victory with
a third goal in the 85th minute when Tony Rocha reached a blocked shot for a
second attempt and muscled the follow up shot into the back of the net.

The Austin Aztex were unable to recover from a first half play which
resulted in a one goal deficit and ultimately fell to the Wilmington
Hammerheads 2-0 Tuesday evening at House Park. The loss eliminated the
Austin Aztex from the U.S. Open Cup.
However, the players are looking up after a hard fought match and are
determined to continue the season in strong form.
The Aztex were able to penetrate the Hammerheads defense early on
during the match when forward Kris Tyrpak was able to disrupt the defenders
with strong attacking runs and defensive pressure once possession was lost.
This resulted in an early scoring chance when Tyrpak forced a turnover and had
a one-on-one with the goalie, only for his shot attempt to be blocked.
Max Gunderson broke through in the 11th minute when he glided past the
defense along the right flank. As Gunderson moved into the box, he began to
lose his footing and was tackled from the side by a Hammerheads defender in
the penalty area, but no foul was called.
For the Hammerheads, they pressured the Aztex through early set pieces.
The Hammerheads were unable to muscle past the Aztex, who had Walker
Hume and Leone Cruz ready to take on any challenges.
The Hammerheads broke through in a decisive play of the game in the
21st minute of the game. Hammerheads forward Steven Perry broke through
after he received a pass from Richard Isberner for a one-on-one with Aztex
goalkeeper Devin Cook. Cook was quick off his line and forced the shot attempt
wide, but Perry ran into Cook on his follow through. For the collision after the
shot, Cook was issued a straight-red card. Josh Mikulewicz stepped in between
the posts for the Aztex, but was unable to stop the ensuing penalty kick from
Isberner.
The Aztex were able to turn it up and had the Hammerheads on their heels
through the remainder of the opening half. The squad finished the half having
edged Wilmington eight shots to nine. Sito Seoane nearly scored in the 45th
minute when his left-footed shot found its way past the diving goalkeeper, but
the ball squeezed around the outside of the far post.
The game took a physical turn early into the second half, as Gareth Evans
and Richard Isberner each earned a caution in the 48th and 50th minutes,
respectively.
The Hammerheads delivered the final blow in the 68th minute. William
Heaney curled in a left footed free kick toward the top of the penalty area. Cruz
tried to parry off the shot with the outside of his right foot, but the ball instead
curled toward goal and into the back of the net for an own goal.
The Aztex were unable to find an answer, but still played hard through the
entire match.

Putting the ‘ATX’ Back into Aztex
Austin’s rich soccer history includes teams which have
competed in the Southwest Indoor Soccer League (SISL),
USISL, and United Soccer Leagues during 23 of the last 25
years. The first expansion team in the SISL, the Sockadillos
featured such local stars as Steve Bailey, Saeed Kadkhodaian,
Brian Monaghan, Uwe Balzis, and Chris Veselka. The tradition
continued as the Austin Lone Stars fielded new stars including
Gabe Jones, Marc Madeley, and Ben Crawley. Marcel Uriarte
earned league honors with the Austin Lightning.
2012
Austin Aztex U23s
The Austin Aztex team that competed in the PDL in 2008
was led by Coach of the Year Wolfgang Suhnholz, and included
Goalkeeper of the Year, Miguel Gallardo, and Defender of the
Year, Beto Papandrea. Twenty-one players that competed on
the 2008 and 2009 squads have gone on to play professionally,
including current MLS players, Austin da Luz (DC United) and
Matt Gold (Toronto FC).
Gallardo, Zack Pope, AJ Goldbolt, Josh Alcala, Kieron
Bernard, Wes Allen, and Jamie Watson went on to star for the
Aztex professional side, while Ryan Mirsky, Jeff Harwell, Kyle
Helton, and Kendall McFayden were pulled up to the pro roster
once their PDL duties were completed.
From Austin to the World
Most recently, Aztex U23 alums Chris Spendlove,
Andres Cuero, and Jamie Scope played with the Wilmington
Hammerheads, Chris Salvagionne was a member of the
Charlotte Eagles, and Gary Boughton played with FC New York.
Former Aztex PDL players competing overseas include Jamie
Cunningham with the Puerto Rico Islanders, Roger Da Costa
who is playing in South Africa with the Moroka Swallows, and
Euan Holden with Stockport County Football Club.

Led by Head Coach Paul Dalglish, the Austin Aztex brought
an entertaining and winning style of soccer back to the Austin
community. The Aztex entertained fans by scoring the most
goals in the conference while conceding the fewest goals. The
squad finished the 2012 season in the Elite 8 (out of 73 teams),
losing in the Southern Conference Championship shortly after
eliminating the top-seeded Ocala Stampede.
Aztex players earned accolades during and after the
season for the Aztex. Aztex players finished in the PDL Top
10 in points, goals, and assists. Austin players were named
PDL Player of the week once, Team of the Week six times, and
Honorable Mention 11 times. Three players were named to the
PDL Southern All-Conference team, the most of any team in
the conference. In addition, the Aztex created an opportunity
for our players to showcase themselves to professional leagues.
Four Aztex players were invited to train with MLS clubs, while
the Aztex played a friendly against an MLS club. Zach Garcia
signed a contract with the San Antonio Scorpions as the 2012
season closed while Kekuta Manneh, Blake Smith, and Dillon
Powers were drafted among the first 11 picks of the 2013 MLS
SuperDraft—a rare feat for a PDL club.
2013
The team won the 2013 League Championship in just their
second year in operation. The Aztex finished the 2013 season
with one of the top records in the league as well as individual
accolades, including Coach of the Year (Paul Dalglish), PDL
Most Valuable Player (Kris Tyrpak), and PDL Championship MVP
(Sito Seoane). The Aztex finished the 2013 campaign with five
consecutive single-game attendance records and were among
the top ten highest-drawing teams in the league, earning the
USL PDL Franchise of the Year award.
The Aztex success continued with the MLS SuperDraft
for the second straight year as five Aztex players (Robbie
Derschang, Kris Tyrpak, Michael Lisch, Michael Kafari, and Travis
Golden) were selected by an MLS club during the draft while
Sito Seoane joined the Houston Dynamo for a preseason trial.
