Este 23 de septiembre es el
día Nacional de Registro de
Votantes (National Voter Registration Day) y se espera que más
latinos se registren y voten en las
próximas elecciones.
Para lograrlo, una campaña de
compromiso público se anunció
el jueves pasado en Main Plaza,
en donde líderes de organizaciones cívicas nacionales y locales
hablaron sobre la importancia
de incrementar el registro de
votantes en la comunidad.
El propósito es cautivar la
atención de las personas que no
votan y de los latinos propensos
a no votar en San Antonio en las
próximas elecciones.
“Nuestra comunidad necesita
saber cuáles son las propuestas
que sus candidatos tienen para
ellos. Tenemos que sacar el voto
de participación cívica”, explicó
Ben Monterroso, director de la
fundación educativa Mi Familia
Vota.
Monterroso asegura que el
futuro de la comunidad tejana
se encuentra en las manos de
los latinos.
“Quiero pedir a la comunidad
que tome enserio su futuro y
que conozcan a sus candidatos
y sus propuestas”, comentó
Monterroso.

Texting while driving is already
illegal, talking on a cell phone
while rolling on the streets of San
Antonio could also be a big no-no
in coming months.
District 10 Councilman Mike
Gallagher is pushing for a revision
on the current cell phone ordinance
that would include a ban on dial-
ing or talking on the phone while
driving.
“This is basically a safety issue
and that’s what I’m really concerned about,” Gallagher told La
Prensa. “Everyone I’ve talked to
says when they’re driving down
the road to work someone unbearably almost pushes them off the
road and when they look up it’s
someone on their cell phone not
paying attention.”
According to the Texas De-
partment of Transportation, one
in four crashes involves driver
distraction. The department also
states drivers who use cell phones
in their vehicles have a higher risk
of collision than drivers who don’t,
whether holding the phone or using a hand-free device.
“In speaking with my fellow
colleagues, every one of them
wants [the ban] to happen as well,”
Gallagher said, adding that they’ve
all had a negative experience with
a distracted driver almost pushing
them off the road.
According to Gallagher, councilmembers aren’t the only ones in
support of the proposed ban.
“We’ve received exceptional
support from people who have
been calling us and telling us at
meetings to please get this passed
as soon as we can,” Gallagher said.

Para celebrar Constitution Day
and Citizenship, teniendo como
marco la Misión de El Álamo, el
miércoles pasado 250 residentes
de San Antonio y ciudades del sur
de Texas se convirtieron en ciudadanos de este país en una cere­
monia de ciudadanía presidida
por el juez federal John Primomo.

Police and fire healthcare debate not over yet

The healthcare debate between
The City of San Antonio and
union organizations representing
San Antonio police officers and
firefighters has been ongoing for
the past year.
The San Antonio Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce has joined
the fray and has some input in the
matter, stating that uniformed
personnel should ante up and pay
for some of their health insurance.
The chamber made five recommendations for the unions and
city to negotiate, including care
plans reflective of other city employees and fund reserves.
Currently, uniformed personnel pay nothing on insurance
premiums.
After six months of study, the
chamber released results showing
that insurance for uniform personnel costs the city double, compared to other city employees.
The city’s Public Safety budget
is 66.5 percent of the city’s General Fund budget. If the safety
budget continues, it will “outpace” the rest of budget resources,
according to the chamber’s study.
The only way to remedy the issue
is if uniformed staff pays some of
their insurance costs.
“We believe they are fair, and
will be in the best interest of our
uniform personnel, and the financial stability of our cities budget,”
Patricia Pliego Stout, chairman of
the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.
Both unions have yet to agree
on anything. Mike Helle, president of the San Antonio Police
Officers Association (SAPOA)
stated that the union is open to
negotiation of a “fair and equitable contract.”

Nuestro error: no tener un Plan B Tier 1 time for UTSA
El dilema
pa­ra los inmigrantes indocu­
mentados es
este: el presidente Barack
Obama ha roto
Jorge Ramos ya dos promesas para legali­
zarlos y ha deportado a más de
dos millones de extranjeros. Sin
embargo, él es el único socio
que tienen y su única esperanza
a corto plazo. No hay más.
Obama tiene un problema
de credibilidad con los latinos.
El pasado 30 de junio –ante el
bloqueo de la reforma migratoria
por parte de los republicanos en
el Congreso– el presidente prometió en un enérgico discurso en
la Casa Blanca que antes del fin
del verano tomaría una “decisión
ejecutiva” para ayudar a millones
de indocumentados. Bueno, esa
promesa no se cumplió. Pospuso
la decisión hasta fin de año por
pura politiquería: No quería
afectar negativamente a los candidatos del Partido Demócrata
en las elecciones de noviembre.
Así son los juegos del poder.
Entiendo el razonamiento pero
no lo justifico. La Casa Blanca
insiste en que es solo un proble­
ma de tiempos y que lo importante es que el presidente sí
cumplirá, pero más tarde. Ojalá.
El problema es que, hasta el
momento, el presidente no ha
sido un socio efectivo para los
inmigrantes latinos. No cuestiono sus buenas intenciones,
pero sí su estrategia y la falta
de resultados. Les falló al incumplir su promesa de presentar
una reforma migratoria en su
primer año de gobierno. Luego,
ha deportado a más inmigrantes y separado a más familias
que cualquier otro presidente
norteamericano. Y ahora vuelve
a romper su palabra al retrasar
medidas migratorias urgentes.
Tenemos que reconocer dos
cosas. La primera es que los
verdaderos enemigos de una
reforma migratoria han sido los
republicanos, y en particular
el temeroso y pasivo líder de
la Cámara de Representantes,
John Boehner. Los Republicanos
entenderán muy tarde, y solo
con derrotas electorales, que
no pueden ser un partido antiinmigrante y, al mismo tiempo,
conseguir el creciente y vital
voto latino. Si siguen así, las
votaciones del 2016 van a ser una
pesadilla para los republicanos.
La segunda cosa que debemos
reconocer es que los hispanos no
teníamos un Plan B para lograr
la reforma migratoria. Fuimos
muy ingenuos. Poner toda la
confianza en la Casa Blanca y
en algunos demócratas no fue
suficiente. Debimos de haber
aprendido de la historia de otros
grupos para crear coaliciones bipartidistas y promover acciones
concretas para lograr acuerdos
realistas. Ese es nuestro error
y ahora estamos pagando las
consecuencias: dependemos de
la voluntad y buena fe de una
sola persona. Ninguna causa
importante puede tener éxito así
a largo plazo.
Ahora dependemos de que el
presidente Obama quiera ayudar
a millones de indocumentados,
igual que tan valientemente hizo
con más de medio millón de
Dreamers, o estudiantes indocumentados. Obama podría ser,
todavía, nuestro mejor aliado.
Pero ¿qué pasa si en lugar de
beneficiar a millones –con un
permiso de trabajo y evitando
su deportación– decide tímidamente ayudar a muchos menos?
¿Qué pasaría si una crisis internacional o un acto terrorista cambia, retrasa aún más o elimina la
posible decisión presidencial?
No podríamos hacer nada.
Incluso, si a pesar de todo
Obama actúa (en noviembre, en
diciembre o cuando él quiera),
cualquier decisión que tome
sería temporal, cuestionada legalmente por los republicanos
y pudiera ser revocada por el
próximo presidente en el 2017.
Por eso necesitamos un Plan B.
La reforma migratoria y el
progreso de la comunidad latina no deben depender de que
alguien nos haga un favor. Ya
estamos muy grandecitos para
eso. Tenemos que aprender de
este fracaso, porque es un gran
fracaso, no hay otra forma de
llamarlo.
Afortunadamente tenemos dos
grandes ejemplos a seguir: el
líder de los campesinos, César
Chávez y los Dreamers. Ellos nunca se dieron por vencidos, lucharon contra el miedo,
actuaron con creatividad, se
enfrentaron cara a cara con
los poderosos, argumentaron
inteligentemente sus ideas y
explicaron con claridad que su
triunfo era, también, un triunfo
para todo el país.
Esta vez perdimos y hay que
reconocer nuestro error. No le
podemos echar la culpa a nadie
más. Sin embargo, estoy absolutamente seguro que Estados
Unidos, tarde o temprano, tratará
a otros inmigrantes con la misma
generosidad con que me ha trata­
do a mí. Esta es mi convicción
muy personal. Pero el cambio lo
tenemos que generar nosotros.
Nadie más lo hará.

ebrate diez
y seis, Mexico’s Independence
Day from Spain. Since those of
Hispanic origin are the majority
population in the Alamo City it
is only logical we remember that
rich Hispanic heritage.
Those who studied Texas history know that Father Miguel
Hidalgo y Costilla’s called for
the end of the Spanish rule in
Mexico, Sept. 16, 1810. That
same day in 1825, the Republic
of Mexico officially declared
Sept. 16 to commemorate its
freedom from Spain.
For 167 years the Alamo City
has celebrated that declaration of
freedom complete with parades
and various festivities. I have
participated in the annual Diez y
Seis Parade for years. As a councilman in Balcones Heights, I
rode on a Balcones Heights float
a number of years.
This year San Antonio’s celebration of diez y seis coincided
with the 40th birthday of its
favorite sons HUD Secretary
Julian Castro & twin brother
Congressman Joaquin Castro.
Born one minute before his
younger sibling, Joaquin, Julian
recently was sworn in by Vice
President Joe Biden last month
as the youngest HUD Secretary
in history.
This past week over 500 San
Antonio residents, well-wishers,
friends and former classmates,
gathered at the Tobin Center for
the Performing Arts to celebrate
the brother’s birthday. Along
with the brothers were Julian’s
wife Erica, and daughter Carina,
and Joaquin’s wife Anna and
daughter Andrea, and mother
Rosie Castro, a long time civil
rights activist.
Certainly not the first public
birthday celebration of the brothers over the years, but it was a
milestone now that both are serving in Washington D.C. I have
covered numerous of their joint
birthday parties for a few years
since they entered public service.
The party included mariachi
singers, elected officials, dignitaries, various people of all
ages to wish the duo a diez y seis
“Happy Birthday.”
As San Antonio Mayor and
proportion of OTMs apprehended
at the Southwest Border went
from 14% to 27% after which it
rose to 36% in FY 2013 and to
over 50% in 2014. Overall, apprehensions in this region increased
about 50% over this period. I will
show that US policy changes in
2012 and 2013 go some way
towards explaining monthly apprehension shifts; but I will also
argue that US policies twenty
and thirty years ago set the stage
for the surge. (2) The (lower)
Rio Grande Valley— the closest
land border for Central Americans
crossing through Mexico— has
been the epicenter of the surge.
Why is this significant? Migration
theory tells us that push factors
(negative forces at the origin) predominate migrants will seek the
path of least resistance and that
they will be negatively selected
(of lower social status and more
desperate). Indeed, news accounts
suggest that these migrants are
more similar to refugees than to
economic migrants. (3) Honduras
accounted for almost three-fifths
of the Central American and
Mexican families apprehended in
2014. Coincidentally, Honduras
suffers the highest homicide rate
in the world. I will show that
recent homicide statistics at the
departmental level in Honduras
closely match US migration
(child apprehension) rates from
these same departments (Frances
Robles previously suggested
this). (4) Finally, news coverage notwithstanding, the most
pronounced surge has been in
family units, not unaccompanied
children (a fivefold vs. a twofold
increase, respectively, between
2013 and 2014). I will argue that
US policies again played a role
in this, but also that the decision
to cross with family represents a
deeper uprooting from the society
of origin in the face of intolerable
conditions at home.
Did this surge (for it is now
diminished) represent a crisis for
the United States? No, it did not.
Prior to the Great Recession of
2007-2009, undocumented apprehensions were twice those of
today, with a Border Patrol agent
force half as strong. Historically,
the US has been able to absorb
proportionately larger numbers
of immigrants than represented by
the Central American surge— Cubans and Salvadorans in the early
1980s, Haitians in the mid-1990s,
and a century ago, much larger
numbers of southern and eastern
Europeans. As Rumbaut and
Saenz pointed out in their Opinion
piece in the Express-News on August 31, immigrants are (and long
have been) less involved in crime
than people born in the United
States. Furthermore, the Central
Americans are actually turning
themselves in— and understandably so given a 2008 act that puts
them in a special adjudication category. Still, Governor Perry sent
in the National Guard to “protect
our citizens.” Never mind that
border residents do not see the
need for this protection— despite
City Councilman, Julian served
nearly three terms as mayor after
three terms as District 7 Councilman. His brother Joaquin served
three terms as a state representative covering the same area in the
legislature before his current two
terms as congressman.
The reader may remember
former Mayor Julian Castro was
the keynote speaker at the 2012
National Democratic Convention. That was a San Antonio
celebration in itself.
Now that diez y seis is history,
we can anticipate and look to
next year’s celebration with San
Antonio’s two favorite sons,
Julian and Joaquin.

The Central American Surge:
The short and long view

I have followed this story since
early this year— the turning
up of young Central American
bodies in the South Texas brush
country; the “onslaught” of child
crossers and families seeking
asylum; attribution of blame for
the “crisis” (was it US policy
changes and their perception by
Central Americans, or was it
crime and poverty in their countries of origin?); conditions along
the border and in countries of
origin; conditions in the shelters
in San Antonio and Oklahoma;
the closing of these shelters and
transfer of apprehendees to giant
detention facilities in Artesia
(NM) and Karnes City (TX) to
facilitate expedited case review
and deportation; lawsuits against
the US government by the ACLU
and lawyer groups for the lack of
due process in such procedures;
the recent decline in apprehensions; and over the entire period,
political posturing based loosely
on, but not constrained by, the
facts.
Newspapers and television
operate in real time and must
present issues in an evocative way
to maintain interest. My task as
an academic is different— to try
to answer more definitively the
questions raised by the media,
with the perspective of time.
I begin with these observations:
(1) The surge predates 2014. Between FY 2011 and FY 2012 the
continuing immigration, crime
rates in US border cities are the
lowest in years. In a recent open
meeting of the Kendall County
Commissioners on August 11,
citizens expressed concern about
“tuberculosis, smallpox, scabies,
and other maladies” from migrant
youth that might come to their
area. Never mind that the last human smallpox case was recorded
in 1977. Visitors to migrant
shelters have consistently found
migrant children and adults well
attended to and posing no health
risk to the general population.
Did the surge represent a crisis
for the migrants themselves? Yes,
it did — and still does. The lawlessness that persists in Honduras,
El Salvador, and Guatemala, and
its impacts on children and families, is well documented. Governments in all three countries still
have ties to military regimes of
the recent past— regimes noted
for their inefficiency, corruption,
and human rights violations. Ironically, mano duro (strong-arm,
zero tolerance) tactics against
gangs over the past decade have
backfired; wrongful incarcerations and killings of civilians have
alienated the population and left
a void into which gangs and drug
interests have entered to command the minds and allegiance
of disenchanted youth.

Lost somewhere in the debate
over police and fire department
health benefits and the buzz surrounding District 10 Councilman
Mike Gallagher’s cellphone ban
while driving, was a city council
consideration request filed by District 8’s Ron Nirenberg and District
5’s Shirley Gonzales.
The pair has asked council to consider an overlay zoning district that
would allow three proposed areas,
UTSA Main Campus, the UTSA
Downtown Campus and the Park
West athletics complex, to establish
an overlay zoning district.
An overlay zoning district would
allow the city to establish alternative
land development requirements,
which could allow development
suitable to create a type of “university business strip” or district similar
to Austin’s Guadalupe Street or
Texas State’s “The Square.”
The obvious choice for this take
place at would be near the UTSA
Main Campus and Park West athletics complex where most students
live.
If city council chooses to move
ahead with a similar plan it could
elevate UTSA’s status of becoming
a Tier 1 university like neighboring
universities The University of Texas
at Austin, Texas A&M University
and Rice University, the only three
Texas universities who hold the
distinction.
A university business district
could help shed UTSA’s label as a
commuter school and attract more
students looking for an all-inclusive
college experience. This, in turn,
would, hopefully, boost the school’s
enrollment and better its rank among
universities.
UTSA is “getting closer every
day” according to their website and
has a detailed plan in place with “A
Shared Vision UTSA 2016” that
has outlined goals to become a Tier
1 university.
Nierenberg and Gonzales’ consideration request could certainly aid
that vision in many areas. UTSA’s
Main Campus desperately needs
something to solidify the area as a
place for the most gifted students
athletically and academically so
that they would want to come to the
university.
Most of the development the past
decade off campus—specifically
on UTSA Boulevard — has been
housing development with at least
six apartment complexes built or
currently being developed during
that time. Not much by way of commerce has been added with the exception of the popular hangout The
Block, which serves as an outdoor
bar and food truck park.
A few other businesses have
opened up on Hausman Road and
the 1604 access road that surrounds
UTSA, but it’s mostly bars and
fast-food restaurants. The Shops at
La Cantera do provide convenient
access to shopping, but is not the
quintessential place for college students looking to avoid parent-types.
UTSA students need something
they can identify with and call their
own, so the university can shed its
commuter label and create more of
a resident-type college experience.
A university business district
could do just that.

Esta semana aprendí a manejar
mi cuerpo y
a escucharlo,
pues, aunque
Ana Cristina suene fuera de

este mundo,
nuestro cuerpo nos dice muchas cosas cuando hacemos
ejercicio, cuando comemos, cuando dormimos y hasta cuando
estamos estresados.
Estoy a punto de cumplir un
mes en Bikram yoga, un tipo de
Hatha yoga que se realiza en un
cuarto caliente durante 60 o 90
minutos. Esta semana definitivamente me sentí diferente,
y es que durante las noches
no podía dormir del dolor tan
fuerte que sentía en mis piernas.
No sabía si era dolor muscular o si era un dolor en los
huesos, pero lo que sí sé es que
era muy fuerte y no me dejaba
descansar. Le eché la culpa a
mi clase y sentí que mi clase
de yoga no era lo mejor que
podía hacer para mantenerme
saludable, pues solo pensaba
en que cómo era posible que me
doliera tanto mi cuerpo y de una
manera tan incómoda.
En fin, decidí regresar a mi
clase y platicarle a uno de mis
instructores lo que me había
sucedido.
Fue precisamente ahí que
me enteré de lo mal que estaba
haciendo las cosas, y, entre los
instructores y mis compañeras,
aprendí que no podemos dejar
pasar por desapercibido lo que
nuestro cuerpo nos pide.
“Ana Cristina, no te esfuerces
tanto, deja que tu cuerpo te diga
hasta dónde puedes llegar”, me
dijo una compañera de clase
que lleva 12 años en Bikram
yoga.
Entré a mi clase, seguí las
instrucciones de mi instructora
pero esta vez mucho menos
tensa, más relajada y además
sin presionar a mi cuerpo a
hacer posiciones que solo me
iban a lastimar.
Me di cuenta de que muchas
veces solo buscamos competir
contra nosotros mismos y retarnos para demostrarnos que
podemos con eso y con más.
Pero nuestro cuerpo no habla,
entonces tenemos que aprender
a escucharlo por medio del
dolor o de la incomodidad que
vayan surgiendo.
Si sentimos que nos estamos
esforzando demasiado, entonces sin importar la edad que
tengamos, debemos de bajar
el ritmo y el esfuerzo que le
ponemos al cuerpo.
Del mismo modo levantando
pesas, corriendo, nadando o
practicando cualquier deporte,
si nos sentimos comprometidos
y con un ritmo cardiaco anormal, entonces lo mejor es bajar
la intensidad de nuestro trabajo
y aprender que si nos sobre
esforzamos podemos dañarnos.
Cuando hagas ejercicio ¡no
te quieras comer el mundo a
mordidas! Siempre hay tiempo
para avanzar y para llegar a tu
meta. Lleva tu vida con calma,
ten paciencia y haz las cosas a
su debido tiempo.

Alibaba debuts on NYSE; shares up

Friday on the New York Stock
Exchange at $92.70 per share, up
36.3 percent from the issue price
of its initial public offering, the
largest in Wall Street’s history.
Alibaba raised nearly $21.8
billion on Thursday after setting
its IPO price at $68 a share, at the
top of end of the company’s previously declared range of between
$66 and $68.
The company’s shares, which
began trading on the NYSE just
before noon, opened at $92.70,
lifting Alibaba’s market capitalization to around $230 billion,
behind only Apple, at $609 billion; and Google, $400 billion;
and ahead of rival Amazon, $151
billion.
The stock price subsequently
rose to nearly $100 a share but had
fallen back to below $94 a share
in late afternoon trading.
Alibaba’s founder and CEO,
Jack Ma, was on hand Friday for
the opening bell ceremony at the
NYSE, although he allowed a
group of eight long-time customers to do the honors.
Ma told financial news network
CNBC shortly after the trading
day kicked off that he was “honored” that his company had gone
public in New York.
He added that he hopes that
over time the company will help
change the world and become

Para asegurar una oportunidad completa para que el público
haga comentarios, el Sistema del Aeropuerto Internacional
de San Antonio (SAAS por su siglas en inglés) conducirá
una reunión pública el martes, 21 de octubre de 2014 para
presentar los resultados de la actualización del Mapa de
Exposición al Ruido (NEM por sus siglas en inglés) para el
Aeropuerto de San Antonio. El estudio del NEM examina las
actuales operaciones del aeropuerto y el pronóstico para los
próximos cinco años así como el estado actual del Programa
para la Compatibilidad con el Ruido para poder actualizar el
NEM para que refleja las condiciones actuales y anticipados
en el futuro. El NEM se usa, entre otros usos, para determinar los áreas alrededor del aeropuerto que potencialmente
serán aptos para mitigación del ruido, así como el Programa
de Tratamiento Acústico Residencial (RATP por sus siglas
en inglés) administrado actualmente por el SAAS. Adicionalmente, SAAS está modificando dos medidas de mitigación
dentro de su Programa para la Compatibilidad con el Ruido

Two of San Antonio’s finest
women to be honored

Local supporters of women in
politics and the arts will gather
at the Red, White and Pink Fiesta to be held on Sept. 27 from
6 p.m. – 10 p.m. at the Hill
Country Hyatt in San Antonio.
Art, dinner and the politics of
women will be the focal point
of the evening with a live, local
band, C-Rock from 8 p.m. – 10
p.m. The event will highlight the
outstanding accomplishments of
two conservative, Republican
women in San Antonio -- Judge
Lois White and artist Kathy
Sosa.
These successful women will
receive the first-ever Red, White
and Pink Leadership Award.
They epitomize the outstanding
grassroots leadership and work
of the Republican Party of Bexar
County.
The Honorable Judge Lois
White will be one of two award
recipients. Judge White is a
former Justice of the Peace,
Precinct 4, and the first AfricanAmerican woman to hold office
as Justice of the Peace in Bexar
County. She is a retired SAISD
educator who earned a master’s
degree in English at the age
of 24 from the University of
Minnesota. She also served in
the English Department of San
Antonio College for over 24

years and retired as an adjunct
professor at St. Phillips College
in 1994.
A life-long Republican, Judge
White ran for state legislature
in 1966, but was unsuccessful.
She served in several Republican administrations as well as
on national, state, local boards
and commissions. Additionally,
she has served as Republican
Precinct Chair since 1962.
Artist Kathy Sosa, the other
award recipient, was influenced
by the rich cultural region along
the Texas and Mexico border.
It was within this beautiful,
diverse and convergent life experience that she wove her two
remarkable careers of advertising/political media in the arts.
Sosa’s career involved work
on more than 20 political campaigns. This included George
W. Bush gubernatorial re-election campaign, as well as Bush’s
presidential election campaigns
in 2000 and 2004.
Sosa picked up a brush for
the first time at the age of 45
and quickly began studying
with renowned portrait artist,
Nelson Shanks. In 2006, Sosa
was commissioned for a portrait
of Martha Stewart by the Texas
Conference for Women in San
Antonio.
Her work, “Huipiles, A Celebration”, was also displayed
in the Smithsonian/Mexican
Cultural Institute and in The
Museo Alameda in San Antonio.
In addition, The Galleria Ortiz
Contemporary in San Antonio
highlighted her in a Two Woman Show: “Sosa/Prida Otravez”
in 2008.
The Red, White, and Pink Fiesta is being planned by the Republican Party of Bexar County
(RPBC) and the Greater San
Antonio Area Council (GSAC)
of the Texas Federation of Republican Women (TFRW).
“This is a celebration of
strong, conservative, Texas
women who are role models
within our Republican Party,”
stated Besa Martin, President
of GSAC.
This event celebrates that,
“Women are More,” who care
about all political, societal and
fiscal issues such as job growth,

de EE.UU. reconoce que todavía
hay mucho por hacer ante la crisis
de los menores centroamericanos
indocumentados que llegan solos
a la frontera, expertos y activistas
afirmaron hoy que más pronto
que tarde se registrará una nueva
entrada masiva de estos niños.
“La situación en Centroamérica
se ha mantenido igual, tenemos los
mismos problemas de inseguridad
y de violencia, la falta de capacidad en gobernabilidad continúa y
el tema laboral se mantiene, no
hay trabajo para jóvenes que son
miembros de carteles o maras”,
dijo a Efe Carl Meacham, director
del Programa de las Américas del
Centro para Estrategias y Estudios
Internacionales (CSIS),

“El presidente no ha actuado, el
congreso no ha actuado y no han
cambiado la circunstancias de la
situación. No habido ningún tipo
de legislación o cambio desde el
brazo Ejecutivo para frenar las
causas por las cuales vienen estos
niños a Estados Unidos”, comentó
Meacham.
“Si los padres se ven obligados a
mandar a traer a sus hijos para que
estén sanos y salvos fuera del país
es porque la situación debe ser tan
mala que no ven otra opción”, dijo.
A 31 de agosto, la cifra de menores que han cruzado solos la frontera, en su mayoría centroamericanos, supera los 66,000 en lo que va
del año fiscal 2014, que comenzó
el 1 de octubre de 2013.
A pesar de los esfuerzos que el
Gobierno estadounidense ha reali­
zado para detener el flujo masivo de
menores, que cruzan por territorio
mexicano para llegar a EE.UU.,
ellos continuarán emigrando de sus
países, porque, según el activista,
Robín Hoover, las campañas fueron
acciones temporales.
“Hablé con amigos en Tapachulas, Chiapas (México), y me dijeron
que los números (de inmigrantes
cruzando) van en aumento. Nosotros pensamos que los esfuerzos
de México para detener que los
inmigrantes no se suban al tren
(que lleva migrantes) fue solo
para mostrar a Estados Unidos que
estaban haciendo algo”, dijo hoy a
Efe Hoover.
El activista coincidió con
Meacham en que es muy posible
que en pocas semanas se comience
a ver el incremento en los números
de detenciones de menores en la
frontera, después de que bajen las
altas temperaturas que se viven en
el desierto durante el verano.
El número de menores sin un
acompañante adulto que fueron
aprehendidos en la frontera con
México se redujo notablemente
en julio y agosto pasado, hasta los
5,501 y 3,141 casos, frente a los
más de 10,000 de mayo y junio,
según datos del Departamento
de Seguridad Nacional (DHS, en
inglés).
Por su parte, el Gobierno de Estados Unidos considera que todavía
no es el momento de cantar victoria
en el tema de la crisis que desató la
llegada de miles de menores solos.
“Sería prematuro declarar victoria y decir que los problemas
han quedado atrás, porque no lo
sabemos. Lo que hemos alcanzado
es un enorme progreso”, dijo el
subsecretario de Seguridad Nacional (DHS en inglés), Alejandro
Mayorkas, en conferencia de prensa
el pasado martes.
Mayorkas aseguró que la solución permanente y duradera
con respecto a la reciente ola de
menores no acompañados radica en
“disminuir la violencia en los países
de origen” y crear incentivos para
que los jóvenes decidan no emigrar.
Situación que para el director ejecutivo de la organización
Homies Unidos, Alex Sánchez, está
lejos de ocurrir, porque esa lucha
la tienen perdida los gobiernos de
Centroamérica.
“Los gobiernos no se están enfocando en crear una infraestructura
para que los ciudadanos no tengan
que emigrar. Esta ola de niños que
se vinieron no es algo reciente,
porque esto ha sucedido por años y
va a continuar, porque no hay alternativas para sobrevivir”, comentó
hoy a Efe Sánchez.
Según el activista, las iniciativas
para erradicar la violencia de las
pandillas han estado en vigencia
por más de diez años sin logros.
“Ha sido un total fracaso, entonces cómo van a detener que los
niños se vengan, si muchos están
huyendo de esta violencia, vamos
a seguir viendo cada día que más
niños va a emigrar y las cifras irán
en aumento”, agregó.

cumplen un doble propósito, ya
que impulsan la imaginación y
el conocimiento y refuerzan en
estos jóvenes lectores su sentido
de identidad cultural.
Según Adriana Domínguez,
agente literaria y experta en lite­
ratura infantil multicultural, la
lectura es una de las herramientas más útiles que tenemos para
fomentar la herencia cultural en
los niños.
“Los libros infantiles en español y bilingües en muchos casos
nos ofrecen la oportunidad de
compartir con nuestros hijos los
juegos, rimas, canciones e historias con las que crecimos, creando
así una línea directa entre ellos y
sus antepasados”, dijo Domínguez a Efe.
Otro valor que ofrecen los libros para niños es la oportunidad
de compartir el acto mismo de la
lectura.
“Los expertos han comprobado que leerles a nuestros niños
ayuda a reforzar nuestro vínculo afectuoso con ellos”, señaló
Domínguez. “Y, por supuesto,
leer material que asociamos con
nuestra propia niñez sirve aún
más para unirnos a ellos”.
Según los expertos, el hábito
de la lectura es probablemente
el factor más significativo para
predecir el éxito escolar.
Para los padres, el promover la
lectura puede parecer un esfuerzo
monumental, pero no tiene por
qué serlo.
Según Domínguez, el simple
acto de ponerle un libro entre las
manos a un niño, ya comienza a
prepararlos para tener éxito en la
escuela.
“Léeles a los pequeños antes
de acostarlos por las noches y
regálale libros en todas las ocasiones posibles a los más grandes”,
recalcó.
Domínguez también exhorta
a los padres a que exploren las
bibliotecas y, sobretodo, que
los ayuden a encontrar material
de lectura con el que se puedan
identificar.
“No importa si los libros son
en español o en inglés,” añadió,
“procura que sean buenos y que
de alguna manera reflejen su
realidad”.
Los libros para niños protagonizados por personajes que comparten su herencia cultural tienen
un gran impacto en sus jóvenes
lectores, al reafirmar valores,
lenguaje y costumbres en común.
Según Laura Lacámara, autora
e ilustradora de libros para niños,
los jóvenes lectores que se ven
reflejados en los libros que leen
sienten un mayor aprecio por su
cultura.
“De niña, yo no veía a nadie
que se pareciera a mí en nuestro
vecindario, y mucho menos en
los libros que leía”, recuerda
Lacámara.
“Hoy día, cuando llevo mis
libros a las escuelas de Los Ángeles, puedo ver por mis propios
ojos lo importante que es para
los niños verse reflejados en sus
libros”, indicó.
Lacámara recuerda a una estudiante que fue a hablar con
ella después de una presentación
escolar: “La niña se me acercó
y me susurró al oído, como si
guardáramos el mismo secreto:
‘La Anita de tu libro ¡se parece
a mí!”.
En su libro más reciente, “El
cabello maravilloso de Dalia”
Lacámara celebra la importancia
cultural del cabello en un relato
lleno de magia y ensueño.
Ilustrado con gracia y fantasía
por la misma autora, el libro
incluye también un glosario de
plantas y animales nativos de
Cuba e instrucciones de cómo
hacer tu propio jardín de mariposas.
Las biografías ilustradas para
niños ofrecen una ventana especial hacia la cultura hispana.
En este género destacan los
libros de Mónica Brown, con
biografías para niños de persona­
jes tan célebres como los poetas
Gabriela Mistral y Pablo Neruda,
la cantante Celia Cruz y el futbolista Pelé.
Para los jóvenes, el sello Piñata
de la editorial Arte Público ofrece
una selección de libros en formato
“flip” bilingüe, donde al darle
la vuelta al libro encontrará su
versión en español.
Esta colección de cuentos
presenta situaciones con las que
muchos adolescentes se pueden
identificar: desilusiones amorosas, conflictos entre amigos,
juegos peligrosos y sus consecuencias.
En el cuento “Mi lengua torcida”, un cliente en guayabera
se acerca a una joven ninfa y le
pregunta por qué no habla español cuando evidentemente es
latina. Esta pregunta le impacta
tanto que confronta a sus padres
sobre el por qué no le enseñaron
su idioma.
“Pero sí te enseñamos”, le
responde su mamá. “Hablabas
solamente español hasta que
cumpliste 4 años”.
Su padre, sin embargo, le explica que si después insistieron
en que solo hablara inglés fue con
la intención de que pudiera tener
éxito en este país.
Gonzales maneja el tema con
delicadeza, navegando pasajes
difíciles que, de seguro, muchos
jóvenes latinos han atravesado
sin dirección.

BiblioTech isn’t just getting a
thumbs up from local librarians.
Wolff told La Prensa BiblioTech has been invited to give a
keynote address at the World Library Association in England and
received one of the top innovator
awards from the Government of
Technology.
But more importantly, it’s
proved that people are using it.
In the first year 66,000 e-books
and 6,000 e-readers were checked
out and a total of 103,000 people
visited the bookless library.
BiblioTech hopes to garner in
more visitors by making it accessible to all local schools.
The 1,000 e-reader donation
is a part of the BiblioTech EDU
Project, funded by the nonprofit
Hidalgo Foundation.
The smell of old books and
dog-eared pages may not be so
common anymore.
One year after its inauguration, Bexar County’s all-digital
BiblioTech is not only redefining
what a public library is, but also
bringing school libraries into the
21st century.
Bexar County Judge Nelson
Wolff and BiblioTech staff will
deliver 1,000 free e-readers to local school libraries in the coming
months and South San Antonio
Independent School District was
the first recipient.
A total of 10 e-readers were
allocated to each of the district’s
four middle schools and 10 were
given to South San Antonio High
School.
The school district was so
excited about the 50 e-readers
that they decided to purchase an
additional 150 e-readers in order
to reach elementary schools and
increase the number of e-readers
in all schools.
“We feel really strongly that
the use of electronic instructional
material is the future not only
for us, but really everywhere in
education,” South San Antonio
ISD Superintendent Abelardo
Saavedra said. “Here at South
San, we want to be able to keep
up with that.”
Students across the school
district will be able to use the ereader in their school library and
will have the opportunity to check
BiblioTech distributed 50 free e-readers to South San ISD librarone out and take it home.

Colleges in 23rd District of Texas get $1.7M

Gallego (D-Alpine) announced
today that three institutions of
higher learning in the 23rd District
of Texas received federal grants
totaling $1,724,893.
The federal grants are made
available through the U.S. Department of Education to help
Hispanic students earn post baccalaureate degrees and to improve or
add graduate degrees and courses.
St. Mary’s University in San
Antonio will receive $574,962.
Sul Ross State University in Alpine will receive $574,998, and
Sul Ross State University-Rio
Grande Campus in Uvalde, Del
Rio and Eagle Pass will receive
$574,933.
“Earning a post graduate degree
means having more opportunities,” U.S. Rep. Gallego said. “As
the federal representative for the
area, I am determined to make
more opportunities available to
anyone wanting to pursue higher
education in the 23rd District of
Texas. We must do everything
possible to make sure our kids
have access to resources and tools

generations will be well prepared

Local credit Accion Texas receives $2M grant

regional awards

Cornerstone Credit Union League
Dora Maxwell Award for Social
Responsibility Community Service for credit unions with assets
over $1 billion for its work with
Girls Inc. on its Empowerment
Conference for teenage girls.
Now in its second year, the
conference, organized and underwritten by SSFCU, brought
together successful women from a
variety of large San Antonio area
corporations to share on topics
designed to help girls relate to
others in their community, build
confidence, understand the importance of making ethical choices
and choose healthy lifestyles. A
total of 168 girls attended this
year.
In addition, SSFCU was recognized with a second place
Accion Texas Inc. – a nonprofit multi-state small business
lender that manages the nation’s
largest microloan portfolio –
has been awarded a $2 million
Financial Assistance Grant
from the U.S Department of
Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions
Fund (CDFI Fund).
The CDFI funds allow ATI to

footprint. In fact, as we approach the end of August, we’ve

point of the year and we expect
to break all previous annual
lending figures by the close of
2014,” she said.
In announcing the CDFI Fund
grants for 2014, U.S. Treasury
Deputy Assistant Secretary Jessica Milano stressed that CDFIs
play a crucial role in the nation’s
economy.
“CDFIs and Native CDFIs
are important community partners providing critically needed
financing that generates economic growth and revitalizes
America’s low-income and economically distressed communities,” she said. “The awards we
announce today will help these
CDFIs and Native CDFIs build
their capacity in order to better
meet the investment needs of the
communities they serve.”

Some of the amendments to the
ban in Austin include being able
to dial 9-1-1 during an emergency
and using hands-free devices to
talk on the phone. Additionally,
drivers will be able to use their
hand-held device while they’re
stopped, whether it’s at the side of
the road or at a stop light.
Councilman Gallagher said that
could still be an issue because once
the light turns green, odds are the
driver will still be distracted.
The ban was on the agenda for
the council’s Governance Meeting
this week, but they ran out of the
time and did not get to the issue.
The issue has been redirected to
the council’s Public Safety Committee.
“That’s an important step because they will go through the
wording on the ordinance to make
sure it’s OK,” Gallagher said.
“We’ll talk to Chief McManus
and other experts so once it gets
through and it gets passed then it’ll
be on the council.”
The Public Safety Committee is
scheduled to meet Oct. 1.

Teen HOPES provides young
mothers guidance and support

Parenting is a tough job and
parenting at a young age can pose
even more challenges. Teens are
still navigating their place in the
world, thinking about their future
after high school, and often balancing extracurricular activities
and/or jobs. Teen parents now

this reason, The
Children’s
Shelter
launched,
T e e n
HOPES, a new program under
the iParent SA program.
Teen HOPES was developed
to work with teen mothers who
are 13-19 years
old. Teen mothers should have
at least one child
delivered within
the previous 24
months or be more than 29 weeks
pregnant. The program pairs a
young mother with an educated
and caring parent educator to
receive services for one year or
more. The parent educator pro-

educator is able to observe the
mother and child bond as well
as help provide resources for the
family to be successful.
In addition to providing
resources, the program offers opportunities for the
young mothers to come
together for monthly support groups. Young mothers have a safe place to talk about
issues that matter to them. Teen
HOPES also offers free mental
health counseling for the teen and
their family.
The parent educator and teen
mother will build
a special bond and
be able to have
honest conversations about parenting, their future, and more.
Home visits are about 1 to 1
½ hours and provided weekly,
bi-weekly, or monthly depending on the need. Parent educators are always
just a phone,
text, or email
away and readily available to
help their teens.
Teen HOPES
staff includes
five parent educators and one
program manager. Together,
we hope to serve
125 teen mothers this year. We
also have bilingual staff available to assist teens, grandparents,
and parents participate in the
program.

It is important to note: if you
are providing minimal or extensive care to a family member,
or just starting it is important to
have a plan in place to aid in the
process. Here are a few ideas to
help you begin this conversation with your family.
Steps
1. Communicate with family members and discuss any
concerns regarding the family
member, and do not forget to
include the person needing care
in the conversation. (This is often overlooked and families do
not begin discussions till there
is a crisis.) I want to stress the
importance of communicating EARLY in the caregiving
process. I can assure you this
will not be the only time you
will need to meet with family
members. Use a video to record
the meeting.
• Consider-who is the best
person to take the lead in this
process. Everyone can decide
together.
• Prioritize- the needs of
the person you are caring for,
determine what is needed and
prioritize them in order of importance.
• Legal Assistance- Begin
discussions early address and
identify the person(s) who will
assist with financial and medical decision-making. This may
require legal consultation with
an elder law attorney.
• Are you prepared? What
can you do or not do? Be honest; let everyone hear what your
abilities include. RememberDo not do it all by yourself!
2. Involve- as many family
members or friend s that you
can in the process. Do not take
this on by yourself. Keep local
resources in mind!
• Be prepared- for resistance. The person you are
caring for may believe its “not

Is it time to replace Tony Romo?
In the midst of Tony Romo's
magical rise as the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys
in 2006, a lot of folks wanted his
head coach Bill Parcells to loosen
the reins. There was a "Let Tony
be Tony" movement afoot, but
Parcells probably knew best.
Wade Phillips and Jason Garrett
have been far more willing to defer
to Romo through the years, with
mixed results. But in Sunday's 2610 win over the Tennessee Titans,
the Cowboys relied heavily on
running back DeMarco Murray.
Romo still looked shaky on several throws, but he did a nice job
managing the game. Suddenly, the
man with a $108 million contract is
being viewed as a complementary
piece. Owner/general manager
Jerry Jones was so taken by Sunday's outcome that he's talking
about Romo like he's a caretaker
quarterback.
"When you can have that balance, and that's a word that's overused, balance, and the other day
we had more of a lean toward the
run, and we'll take it," Jones said
on his weekly show on The Fan.
"That offensive line played lights
out for us. But when you can have
more of a balance, which means
that you're not sitting there with
a high ratio of passes by Romo,
then I think we're seeing you have
a better chance for your defense to
be more effective, play less plays,
better field position.
"All of it works together. So the
way we played Romo the other day
fits me just fine and fits him just
fine. It's called winning, and that's
what we're here for."
I love it when Jerry gets cocky.
He wins one game in Nashville and
he's suddenly delivering speeches
on winning. If anyone actually
believes Romo can morph into
a caretaker quarterback, you've
probably been sampling Jerry's
favored drink, Johnnie Walker
Blue. I do think Romo's much
more interested in wins than statistics at this point in his career,
but this team's defense is going to
give up a lot more than 10 points
most Sundays. Teams such as this
Sunday's opponent, St. Louis, will
load up to stop the run.
Romo was once capable of put-
ting this offense on his shoulders,
but that's no longer the case. It's
pretty obvious he doesn't have the
same velocity on his throws since
he underwent back surgery. All
this talk from Romo and Jones
about how his footwork and body
position is causing errant throws
is make believe. The guy doesn't
have as much zip on the ball
because he's not right physically.
He may shake off the rust in the
coming weeks, but this doesn't
have anything to do with improper
footwork.
The biggest worry for the Cowboys is that Romo no longer seems
capable of escaping trouble in the
pocket. His ability to extend plays
is what made him a unique player.
It's startling to see him basically
dive to the ground when a defen-
sive linemen starts to close in.
I don't think Romo's lost his
instincts, but it's safe to say his
athleticism has fallen off significantly. He talked Sunday about
how the Cowboys played a style
of football Sunday similar to what
has made the Seattle Seahawks
successful. That may have been
true for one afternoon, but there's
nothing to suggest the Cowboys
can do this on a weekly basis.
Romo will be called upon Sunday
to be more than a complementary
piece. I don't know if he'll be up
to the task.
I do know that Jones didn't pay
Romo to be a complementary
player. And one win and some
tough-guy comments on local
radio isn't going to change that
one bit.

In the wake of the scandal involving the Vikings running back
and his indictment for alleged child
abuse, Nike has decided to pull all
Peterson merchandise out of their
stores in the Twin Cities area. So,
if you're in Minneapolis or St. Paul,
you're out of luck.
"An eye-opening development:
Nike stores in Twin Cities have
pulled all Adrian Peterson merch
from shelves. Nike," Jon Crawczynski of The Associated Press
tweeted this week.
People still will be able to buy
Peterson merchandise online.
Public pressure has been building for sponsors to react in the wake
of several ugly incidents that have
gone down in the NFL, from Ray
Rice's domestic violence issues to
Peterson. Hotel chain Radisson
temporarily suspended its sponsorship deal with the Vikings, and
beer manufacturer AnheuserBusch expressed concern over
the league's handling of domestic
violence and child abuse.
On early Wednesday morning,
the Minnesota Vikings owners
announced in a statement to the
media that they are following the
recommendation of the NFL and
placing Peterson on the exempt /
commissioner's permission list,
which bars Peterson from all team
activities.
"This is the best possible outcome given the circumstances,"
Peterson's agent, Ben Dogra, told
The Associated Press. "Adrian
understands the gravity of the
situation and this enables him to
take care of his personal situation.
We fully support Adrian and he
looks forward to watching his
teammates and coaches being
successful during his absence."

Big 12 pregame huddle: Week 4

No player in the Big 12 has
made more dramatic improvement from 2013 to 2014 than
West Virginia quarterback Clint
Trickett.
Last season, he completed
just 52 percent of his passes.
He topped 300 yards twice and
threw multiple touchdown passes
in just two games.. In 2014, he's
completed 75 percent of his
passes and has yet to throw for
fewer than 348 yards in a game,
including a matchup against
No. 2 Alabama. He's thrown
seven touchdowns to just one
interception and his 511-yard,
four-touchdown day on Saturday
against Maryland was the secondbest in school history, behind
only Geno Smith.
Why? Well, the absence of
searing pain in his shoulder has
helped. Getting settled into the
grooves of West Virginia's program has made an impact, too.
He will have a major say in
whether West Virginia upsets No.
4 Oklahoma on Saturday night in
Morgantown.
Trickett didn't begin practicing with the team until preseason
camp in August after transferring
to West Virginia from Florida
State.
"At the beginning of the year, I
didn't understand what (coaches)
wanted or why," Trickett told
Fox Sports Southwest this week.
"By the end of the year, I started
to understand a little bit of what
they wanted."
He played sparingly in West
Virginia's first four games, but
made his debut in a 30-21 upset
of preseason Big 12 favorite
Oklahoma State.
"He didn't really have a relationship with the coaching staff or
the players, which makes it tough
at that position where you're
naturally put into a leadership
role," West Virginia coach Dana
Holgorsen said.
Trickett suffered a shoulder
injury in the win over Oklahoma
State that required postseason
surgery to repair his rotator cuff
and labrum and sentenced him to
a season playing through pain.
"It was excruciating," he said,
estimating he played at about 60
percent for much of the season.
The pain was constant and made
daily life difficult off the field while
forcing him to alter his throwing
mechanics and accuracy on the field.
During the spring, sidelined by
a recovering shoulder, Trickett developed a deeper relationship with
coaches while watching practice
from the sideline and began to understand the "why" along with the
"what" of what made Holgorsen's
offense run.
This fall, he's taken to sitting in on
coaches meetings, which was a big
no-no under Jimbo Fisher.
"You don't do that at Florida
State. That's coach's time," Trickett
said. "It took me awhile to grasp
that here."
He's got a death grip on it now,
stopping by the facilities in between
classes and mostly observing, but
offering his input when its asked on
things like which plays he's most
comfortable running.
Situations like that are where the
laid-back atmosphere in Holgorsen's
program pays off.
Trickett's older brother, Travis, is
the offensive coordinator at Samford
and another brother, Chance, is a
recruiting assistant at Florida State
where the boys' father, longtime
OL coaching legend Rick Trickett,
serves on Fisher's staff.
"My plan has always been to play
as long as I can and then go into
coaching," Trickett said.
Holgorsen called Trickett's leadership "off the charts" this week,
and he's already got a head start
on sounding like a coach. Who
cares about 511 yards and four
touchdowns in the rain?
"There's a lot I could have done
that I didn't," Trickett said. "I
didn't think I played that well."

Dez Bryant's X is quickly becoming one of the most popular
touchdown celebrations in the
NFL. After every score, the Dallas Cowboys' star receiver looks
at the crowd, pauses and makes
an X by crossing his arms.
What does the symbol mean?
"The X is for all of the defenses," Bryant said recently
during an interview with NFL
Network's Michael Silver. "I'm
the guy to watch."
Silver followed up by asking
Bryant what he's X-ing out?
"All of the bad, all of the
negativity that ever came that
approached me," Bryant said.
"People don't understand me;
they paint their own pictures of
me. I look at them as they're just
negative, they want to bring me
down I'll show them. The biggest
joy I can ever get is me proving a
doubter wrong. I love it. I love it."
Bryant believes he's already
proved a lot of people wrong.
Growing up around family members who did drugs and a mother
he had to visit in jail, Bryant understands the odds were stacked
against him.
"We knew even when we drafted Dez that there may be some
weaknesses, but there was no
wickedness," former Cowboys
star receiver Michael Irvin said
recently on the NFL Network.
"He is a good kid, he has a good
heart and Dez wears it on his
sleeve."
One of Irvin's co-workers at
the NFL Network, Hall of Fame
defensive tackle Warren Sapp,
has become a fan of how Bryant
"plays the game with a purpose."
"I love how he ferociously
goes after the ball," Sapp said. "It
doesn't matter, when he catches it
he is getting ready to run. He is
running like a running back trying to get a third-and-1. He plays
the game like it is supposed to be
played, like it is your last chance
to ever touch a football."
While that type of aggressive
style has been there since Bryant
was drafted by the Cowboys in
2010, his play wasn't always consistent. He'd have big numbers
early in games and then disappear
in the fourth quarter.
Coming off his first Pro Bowl
appearance, Bryant continues to
establish himself as one of the
league's best wide receivers. But
he's far from satisfied.
He's striving for that consistency.
"All the young Dez knew was,
'Hey, just get through it the best
way that you possibly can.' Really never was told to do much
just go," Bryant said. "Every day
after practice coach [Jason] Garrett writes on this piece of paper.
I don't know what he writes on
the paper but it's consistent, and
it kind of struck me.
"It was hard for me and all I
knew was somehow, someway I
have to learn how to be consistent.
It was hard. Very, very, very hard."

one, and it was hard to do any
more. Marc attempted to keep
up with Valentino and Jorge but
eventually he crashed trying-they
were very strong here. This race
also saw many problems for us
with the front and rear, so there
was little that we could do. From
the opening laps I lost a lot of
time in traffic, and that affected
my entire race. I tried to do the
best I could and still had difficulty
sticking with Dovizioso, because
he also lapped very quickly;
eventually we were going as fast
as the Valentino and Jorge. Now
we have to take the positives from
this weekend and hope that for the
next race at Aragon, which is a
track that I like, we have a better
feeling and have a better race,”
said Dani Pedrosa.
“I’m happy with how the race
went, despite the crash due to
my first mistake of the season,
because I did not think that I
would be capable of sticking with
Valentino and Jorge. They had a
little bit more pace, and we were
able to get fairy close to them.
I saw the possibility of fighting
with Valentino for the victory,
but that was not possible in the
end because of the mistake. I
was riding over the inside of the
rumble strip and that meant that I
lost the front. Luckly I was able
to rejoin the race, continue with a
good pace and score a point that
could always come in handy in the
future,” Marquez added.
In the 2014 MotoGP World
Championship Round 13 held at
the Gran Premio di San Marino e

Dani dropped back to seventh
from his fifth spot on the grid,
but also made his way through
the traffic and was up to fourth
by lap eight. However, as Marc
pushed to try and stay with race
leader Valentino, he made a small
mistake and lost the front in turn
four at a fairly low speed, with the
bike spinning out. He was able to
pick the bike up but had trouble
getting it started again.
Finally race marshals arrive
and managed to bump start him,
but by this point the pack had
disappeared. Marc pushed hard
to catch the back markers and

con futuro) se agenció la victoria
con pizarra de 4 a 1 carreras, con
derrota para Keith Vázquez, quien
al final de temporada se agenció
el título de campeón lanzador
con 7 victorias por 1 derrota, por
lo que recibirá precioso anillo
conmemorativo en honor a su
esfuerzo para ubicar a Tecolotes
en el segundo lugar en la zona sur,
donde Astros finalizó en cuarto
lugar.

Library reminds everyone to add a SAPL Library Card to back to school list

September means school is
back in full swing, and that
it’s time to equip every child
with one of the most important
school supplies of all, their
library card.
For children, a San Antonio
Public Library (SAPL) card
provides access to a multitude
of programming and resources. Select branches feature
Early Learning Stations- touch
screen, kid-sized computers
pre-loaded with educational
games for children up to third
grade. Teachers and parents
are invited to take advantage
of free tutorials on utilizing
Library services like children’s
databases, BookFlix and TrueFlix, Live Homework help and
eBook downloads.
Children also have access
to traveling iPads, pre-loaded
with select apps used during inbranch early literacy and tween
programs. Other Children’s
services include story time,
come & go crafts, Little Read
Wagon, Every Child Ready to
Read and more!
Teens can utilize their SAPL
cards to experiment with code
and html, build gadgets and robots, or have fun with Lego robotics and 3-D printing. Some
branch locations are equipped
with green screens where teens
can produce YouTube and other
videos, and others offer the opportunity to produce podcasts.
Participants in the Teen Leadership Councils also take part in
producing blogs- from book
reviews to other programs taking place at their branch. Additional Teen Services include
tutoring, digital programming
and creative design and social
events- gaming, clubs and music lessons (Eclectic Electric),
just to name a few.
Adults are also encouraged
to sign up for a SAPL card for
access to programming, events
and services to facilitate adult
learning, self-education and entertainment. A variety of training opportunities are available
for help with eReaders, using
the library's digital downloads
services, computer skills, MS
Office education, and online
job search and résumé assistance. Guests can also checkout laptops and tablets for use
within the branch. WiFi access
and WiFi printing make it easy
for patrons to access online
resources. Other system-wide
programs include events presented by the Lifelong Learning Series and Live Well/Age
Smart (seniors) committees.

Morningside Ministries wins $350K grant

Morningside Ministries, San
Antonio's oldest and largest notfor-profit, faith-based senior care
organization, is the recipient of
the inaugural $350,000 Humana
Communities Benefit grant in San
Antonio, which is funded by the
Humana Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Humana Inc.
Morningside Ministries currently provides residential care
to more than 800 older adults
in the greater San Antonio community and extensive training
services for their caregivers.
Using the $350,000 Humana
Communities Benefit grant,
Morningside Ministries will expand its web-based training program, a nationally-recognized
website that provides support
and educational training to caregivers of seniors.
The e-learning website will
provide caregivers an all-encompassing support system with
educational videos on nutrition
and medication management
programs, mental illness, senior
exercise routines, caregiver
health and other valuable resources.
The role of a caregiver can
be difficult with little resources
available that address the physical, emotional and spiritual
needs of older adults in their
care, said Alvin A. Loewenberg,
president and CEO
of Morningside Ministries.
Thanks to the generous grant
from Humana, countless families
suddenly finding themselves in
the role of caregiver will finally
find the training and support they
need to provide the best possible
care to their loved ones, as well
as for their own needs.
In its inaugural year in San Antonio, the Humana Communities
Benefit charitable giving program
provided 501(c)(3) organizations
in Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar,
Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall,
Medina and Wilson counties the
opportunity to apply for this year's
grant. The Humana Communities
Benefit program awards nonprofit
501(c)(3) organizations a total of
$350,000, provided in three installments over a three-year period.
“Morningside Ministries proposal to create a sustainable and
life-changing support system for
seniors and their caregivers exemplifies the goals of the Humana
Communities Benefit program,”
said Pattie Dale Tye, vice president, Humana. “Humana has had
a presence in San Antonio for
more than three decades and we’re
thrilled to help such a deserving
nonprofit improve the quality of life
for countless caregivers throughout
the greater community.”
The San Antonio Food Bank,
an organization that provides food
and grocery products throughout
Southwest Texas, and ChildSafe,
a children's advocacy center that
provides hope, healing and support
to children and their
families who have been traumatized by abuse, were the other two
finalists.
The three organizations participated in the inaugural online
community vote hosted on HumanaHCBVote.com.
One of this year’s many new
features, the online vote gave the
public the opportunity to weigh in
on which organization it felt was
most deserving of the Humana
Communities Benefit grant.
The public's results were included during the final round of
judging, which included formal
presentations to a panel of community leaders and business
representatives, which decided
the winning nonprofit in each city.

La archivera Elizabeth Cruces
preserva y difunde el legado hispano
EFEUSA - La curiosidad por
entender sus raíces y la herencia
cultural de sus padres mexicanos
fue fundamental para que Elizabeth
"Lisa" Cruces, nacida en Kerville
(Texas), se interese por estudiar
historia para preservar y difundir el
legado de los hispanos.
Hoy, a sus 28 años, Cruces
es archivera de la Colección de
Estudios Hispanos de la Universidad
de Houston (UH) y se encarga de
adquirir antologías y documentos
físicos y digitales que tengan que ver
con la crónica de relatos, memorias
y leyendas de la comunidad latina
de la región.
"Me siento mexicana por mi
familia, por como crecí y vi el
mundo, y siempre tuve curiosidad
por la historia y los materiales
que forman parte de ella y que
muchas veces no están en su lugar
de origen sino a miles de millas de
distancia en una biblioteca al otro
lado del mundo", expresó Cruces
en entrevista con Efe.
"Aunque actualmente tenemos
solo ocho colecciones en nuestros
archivos, la meta es aumentar ese
número", agregó, aunque, para ello,
necesitan identificar "organizaciones
y particulares de importancia
que tienen archivos personales
importantes sobre la cultura local".
Antes de llegar a Houston,
Cruces colaboró en la Universidad
de Notre Dame y también en la
Universidad de Indiana South Bend,
así como en el Centro de Historia
Latinoamericana de la Universidad
de Texas en Austin.
Su corta carrera también incluye
trabajo en el Centro Theodore
Roosevelt de la Universidad de
Dickinson y el análisis comparativo
de los lugares de Latinoamérica
y EE.UU. donde se mantienen
físicamente los archivos generales,
realizado en la ciudad de Panamá
(Panamá).
"Siempre tuve interés en los
archivos y en la profesión de
archivero porque administras
material muy sensible", recalcó
Cruces, quien también tiene la tarea
de recopilar archivos sobre otras
regiones de Latinoamérica pero
que se encuentran en colecciones
privadas en el sureste del estado
de Texas.
Otras de sus labores principales es
expandir y promulgar la información
que se halla concentrada en las
colecciones de UH a través de
charlas informativas ya sea en las
diferentes facultades del recinto
universitario o en presentaciones
públicas.
Para poder identificar un archivo
antes que forme parte de una
colección hay varios elementos
a tomar en cuenta, según cuenta
Cruces, como conocer la razón
por la cual esa persona o artista
o material es relevante para la
comunidad.
"Entonces, cuando cumple
esa y otra de las cualidades que
necesitamos, se organiza una
descripción donde se incluye los
datos importantes como las fechas,
la historia del autor y los tipos
de materiales como fotografías,
cartas, manuscritos y hasta material
digital", indicó.
Los archivos de la Colección de
Estudios Hispanos de UH incluyen
manuscritos y obras pertenecientes
a Arte Público Press, la casa editora
textos hispanos más antigua en
EE.UU.
En ella se incluye al proyecto de
Herencia de la Literatura Hispana de
EE.UU. con miles de documentos
digitalizados que mantiene desde
antes de que existiera Estados
Unidos como nación.
Para Cruces, preservar un
documento o archivar un sinnúmero
de colecciones tiene un solo
significado: conocer el legado
de nuestros antecesores, siempre
con la importancia de tomar una
información y los estudios previos de
un documento que narra y encierra
parte importante de una cultura
para tomar mejores decisiones en
el futuro.
"Los estudiantes y los nuevos
profesionales hispanos deben
reconocer y entender que su éxito
se lo deben a sus padres y a sus
abuelos", dijo Cruces.
"Pero más importante es
comprender que debido al
entusiasmo de una persona o una
comunidad que se interesó en
detallar una parte de su historia en
un formato determinado podemos
entender por qué sufrieron o los
asesinaron o simplemente se
desvanecieron. En definitiva, para
no olvidar", culminó.
La curiosidad por entender sus raíces y la herencia cultural de

ClergyAgainstAlzheimer’s calls on religious
leaders to mark world Alzheimer’s Day

The ClergyAgainstAlzheimer’s
Network, a diverse, multi-faith,
national network of clergy working to focus our nation’s attention
on Alzheimer’s disease, is calling
on religious leaders and clergy to
mark World Alzheimer’s Day in
their congregations’ sermons and
addresses during the weekend of
Sept. 19-21, 2014.
September is globally designated as World Alzheimer’s Month –
an international campaign to raise
dementia awareness and challenge
the stigma so often associated with
Alzheimer’s – and Sunday, Sept.
21 is World Alzheimer’s Day.
“We are appealing to you as a
religious and community leader to
mark World Alzheimer’s Day in
your congregations’ sermons and
addresses during the weekend of
Sept. 19-21,” said the founders
of ClergyAgainstAlzheimer’s
in a letter to Presbyterian, Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran, Jewish,
Muslim, Methodist and Episcopal
religious leaders. “This will send
a powerful message of love and
support to those in your faith
community who are living with
dementia, and their families.”
The letter, dated September 12,
continues, “The mission of ClergyAgainstAlzheimer’s is to promote dignity, compassionate care
and quality of life for individuals

diagnosis and medical and social

living with dementia, a disease
which knows no social, economic
or geographic boundaries – a truly
silent epidemic.

with Alzheimer’s, eldercare issues,
hospice care and the dementia
friendly communities movement
– all with a focus on the broader
subject of spirituality and aging.

founders are also educators, authors
and recognized public speakers. A

The group will publish a first-ofits-kind interfaith book of meditations for caregivers this fall titled,
“Seasons of Caring: Meditations
for Alzheimer’s and Dementia
Caregivers.” The volume will address the unique challenges faced
by Alzheimer’s caregivers and send
a strong message about the breadth
of faith leaders who are united in
the struggle against Alzheimer’s.
The book will have original selections by clergy from all faiths,
offering hope, encouragement,
empathy and understanding.
In Memoriam
William Guardia
April 10, 1929
September 5, 2014
William Guardia age 85 of San Antonio passed away peacefully on
September 5, 2014. He was born in Eagle Pass, Texas. He served as U.S
Navy corpsman attached to the U.S marines in Korea. Mr. Guardia was
awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Mary’s University and a
Master’s Degree in Counseling from Our Lady of the Lake University.
He was also a Fulbright Scholar sent to the Middle East for studies.
Mr. Guardia was a passionate about education and spent most of his
career teaching, counseling, and finally in administration in the San
Antonio Independent School District. He touched the lives of countless
young people, wanting each one to have the best possible education.
William was a long time principal of Ira Ogden Elementary School. He
was a proponent of bilingual education and was sent to Washington, D.C.
for the National Education Association in support of bilingual education.
In his retirement, he was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, where he was an active member of the book committee. Mr.
Guardia served as a volunteer photographer covering special events for
the SAISD. Over the past years, Mr. Guardia was an avid supporter of
La Prensa Foundation and the scholarship program.
Mr. Guardia was preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Olivia
Guardia, sister, Olga Villanueva, and brother Thomas Guardia, Jr. He
is survived by his sister Zulema G. Reina and husband Ben of Houston,
Texas; nieces and nephews: Dolores Hamilton, Roland Villanueva, Geri
Balleza, Tom Villanueva, and Thomas J. Guardia III, of San Antonio,
Texas; Cindy Porras of Sugarland, Texas; Diane Reina and Michael
Reina of Houston, Texas; and Francine LaFon of Friendswood, Texas.
Mr. Guardia’s family wishes to thank the staff of Autumn Grove Cottage
for their devoted care during his illness.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made
to the Alzheimer’s Association, 7400 Louis Pasteur Dr., San Antonio,
Texas 78229.

Pope Francis spoke on what it
means to evangelize, calling it
apostolic work born of an encounter with Christ rather than lifeless
efforts from the self-appointed
“elect.”
He also asked for prayers for
his upcoming trip to Albania on
Sept. 21, saying that his choice to
visit the country was because of
the suffering endured on account
of “a terrible atheist regime and
is now realizing peaceful coexistence among its various religious
components.”
Earlier in the morning, Pope
Francis offered catechesis to those
gathered in the square, reflecting
on the words “catholicity” and
“apostolic.”
The church, the pope said, shows
her “catholicity” — or “universality” — by speaking all languages
which is the effect of Pentecost,
when the Holy Spirit gave to the
apostles and the whole church the
gift of proclaiming the good news
of God’s salvation and love to all,
even to the ends of the earth.”
The church is also by its nature
missionary, “given to evangelization and encounter” — in other
words, apostolic.
In off-the-cuff remarks, Pope
Francis noted how today the Gospel is available in every language.
For this reason, he said, it is a good
habit to carry a copy of the Gospel
with us in our pocket or purse to
read throughout the day.
“The Gospel is available in every language,” he said in a Catholic
News Agency report, “because the
church, the message of Jesus Christ
redeemer, is in all the world.” This
is why one can say that the church
is Catholic, and universal.
To say that the church is born
Catholic, the pope said, is to say
that it is “born to go out” — “born
missionary.”
Had the apostles remained in the
Upper Room without going out to
proclaim the Gospel, he continued,
the church would have consisted
solely of the people in that city, in
the Upper Room.
“But they all went out to the
world,” he said, “from the moment of the church’s birth, from
the moment in which the Holy
Spirit came, and for this reason, the
church was born “in going out” —
that is, missionary.
Pope Francis added that those of
us living today are in “continuity”
with the Apostles who went out after having received the Holy Spirit.
The Church’s call to proclaim
the Gospel, showing the “tenderness and power of God,” the
pope continued, “flows from
Pentecost.”
He also warned against sentiments of those Christians who see
themselves as being among the
“elect,” saying that they die, first
in spirit then in body.
“Such people do not have life,”
he said, nor do they “have the capacity to generate life… they are
not apostles.”

and sisters, even those most distant

27 as part of ‘National Passport Awareness Month’
SAN ANTONIO (Sept. 10, 2014) – The City of San Antonio
Office of the City Clerk with the U.S. Department of State are
promoting September as “National Passport Awareness Month.”
The mission of this national campaign is to increase familiarity of
international travel and provide helpful information and services
to the traveling public.
To further highlight National Passport Awareness Month, the
Office of the City Clerk will host a Passport Day on Saturday,
Sept. 27, 2014 from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Municipal Archives and
Records Facility, 719 S. Santa Rosa. This Passport Day will provide
individuals and families an opportunity to apply for a passport on
a Saturday.
The Office of the City Clerk offers passport photographs at an
additional cost. The Santa Rosa location offers free parking. The
Vital Records Office, located in the same building, will also be
open during the same hours for individuals and families needing a
Certified Birth Certificate.
If you are unable to attend Passport Day, the Office of the City
Clerk can assist individuals applying for a passport or needing a
certified birth record Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Desfile por las fiestas patrias de México

En una ruta corta pero plena de
entusiasmo el Westside se volcó
el sábado 13 de septiembre para
presenciar el acostumbrado Desfile del “16 de Septiembre”, conmemorando dicha fecha en 1810,
efeméride en que se conmemora
el inicio de la independencia de
México por el Padre de la Patria,
Miguel Hidalgo, párroco de la
iglesia en el Pueblo de Dolores,
Guanajuato.
Carros alegóricos y contingentes de estudiantes y de veteranos,
sin que faltaran las bellas Adelitas
con coloridos atuendos montando
briosos corceles.
El desfile empezó a las 11 de
la mañana partiendo de la intersección de Zarzamora y Avenida
Guadalupe, continuando sobre
esta avenida para terminar en
la esquina de la avenida Brazos
en las inmediaciones de la Plaza
Guadalupe, donde continuó un
festival hasta el atardecer.

Los miles de espectadores que asistieron a los partidos de Stars de San Antonio (AT&T Center) disfrutaron
de los diversos eventos y tradicionales celebraciones, entre ellas las presentaciones de populares intérpretes,
coros musicales, escoltas militares que presentaron banderas. La gerencia general no escatimó esfuerzo
alguno presentando una enorme bandera en la ceremonia del Himno Nacional antes del partido Stars vs.
Shock. La bandera fue sostenida por la porra mixta Star Squad, la cual recibió emotiva ovación.
El Mariachi Mujer Internacional de Los Spurs, dirigido por Lucía Díaz, complació a fans y jugadores con su repertorio durante sus presentaciones en la cancha y en la sección Plaza Level del
AT&T Center durante la temporada y en los festejos del playoff. En la presentación del primer
cotejo por el campeonato del oeste entre Spurs y el visitante Thunder de Oklahoma City el mariachi
se hizo acompañar por la mascota “The Coyote”, que –para estar a tono– se vistió de charro animando el ambiente. En sus presentaciones Mariachi Internacional de Los Spurs recibió infinidad
de felicitaciones tanto en vivo como por los medios sociales. Entre sus integrantes se encuentra
nuestra compañera y reportera estrella Amanda Lozano, quien magistralmente toca el “guitarrón”.

Jacob Guerrero Alarcón, de 3 años de edad, es un fan del equipo Piratas, que lo inspira a su corta
edad a superar su estilo de bateo. Sus padres Idalia Alarcón y Daniel Guerrero (coach y jugador del
equipo Piratas) se encuentran orgullosos porque en él ven a un beisbolista con futuro. “Jacob gusta
dormirse con casco y su bate por un lado. Para él todos sus juguetes son artículos de béisbol. Estamos
sorprendidos porque a su corta edad muestra habilidad natural”, expresó el orgulloso progenitor.
El delantero Matt Bonner, quien en la espalda de su playera luce el No. 15, en su estancia con el
pentacampeón Spurs, por su carisma y servicio comunitario, se ha ganado la admiración de fans
que gustan aplaudir su actuación sobre la duela. En la foto Bonner aparece acompañado por un
pelirrojo aficionado que le da parecido a su persona, quien en cada partido local lo respalda vistiendo
la playera con el No.15. El martes 28 de octubre antes de comenzar el primer partido de la temporada 2014-15, contra el visitante Mavericks de Dallas, Bonner recibirá su primer anillo de la NBA.
El aficionado David Aparicio, con su muñeco “Chucky”, estuvo apoyando a los Spurs durante
la segunda fiesta de la gran final con el cuarto partido jugándose en la American Airlines Arena
en Miami. Dicha fiesta fue ofrecida por la cadena de supermercados H-E-B en el AT&T Center
donde miles de espectadores con entrada gratis presenciaron las acciones transmitidas por la pantalla central. Aparicio dijo que Chucky con sus “poderes” sobrenaturales ayudó a los Spurs para
consumar la victoria del cuarto partido que finalizó con marcador de 107 a 86, con lo que puso
contra la pared al autonombrado “King James”, el delantero LeBron James, que nada pudo hacer
porque el Heat retuviera su título el cual cedió a San Antonio en el quinto partido perdiendo con
pizarra de 104 a 87. Go Spurs Go!
Por el excelente trabajo que realizó en la temporada 2014, Tom Rowe, entrenador en jefe del club
de hockey profesional Rampage de San Antonio, retornará al AT&T Center para coordinar las estrategias de juego y a la vez respaldar los eventos especiales que la gerencia general estará realizando
durante la temporada que iniciará el viernes 10 de octubre contra el equipo visitante Wild de Iowa.

Cookhouse debuts in San Antonio

The dinner menu slightly
differs; veal marrow bones,
charbroiled oysters, pork cracklings, tomato artichoke cannoli
with fresh pasta, pork cutlets
with Creole tomato grits, wilted
spinach and poached pear are
among some of the goodies on
the evening menu.
Cookhouse debuted in San
Antonio on Sept. 12, and is al-
ready a hit. The restaurant, while
small, is comfy and inviting.
Candlelight at the tables made
for a romantic setting. Despite
the general chaos that befalls
all eateries on their first day, the
servers were attentive and Sypesteyn’s cooking was spot on.
One item that is definitely
worth a try is the Trout Almandine. The trout is grilled, and a
slew of green beans are piled.
The green beans, however,
are what really stood out to
me. Fresh enough to talk back,
the beans were flavored with
meuniére butter and toasted
almonds that gave the fish fillet
it’s flavor. Nutty, savory and
smooth.

mother cooks some killer green

San Antonio has a very diverse culinary scene. However,
there is one aspect that is sorely
lacking: Cajun cuisine.
Cookhouse, a new eatery in
town, is here to remedy that
shortage, and it doesn’t disappoint.
Located on 720 E. Mistletoe,
Cookhouse is in the corazón of
San Antonio’s nightlife area
near St. Mary’s and in the
former location of Carmen de
la Calle. I’ll add this: it truly
gives another aspect to the area
associated with nightlife quality
cuisine. This isn’t your average
late-night party food, though.
The cuisine may strike a
familiar chord with customers
who frequent the Alamo Street
Eat Bar because Chef Pieter
Sypesteyn truck, Where Y’at,
regularly parks there and features similar dishes.
Cookhouse specializes in New
Orleans style food. Expect to
see goodies such as fried shrimp
and catfish po’boys, dirty rice,

highlight of my visit!
For steak enthusiasts, consider trying the Hanger Steak. A
lover of rare steak can truly appreciate the beauty of this dish.
Cut up into bite sized pieces and
served with roasted red potatoes,
wilted spinach and bone marrow
butter, it is a delight. The meat
is tender and juicy, and it just
falls apart. No knife required.
The potatoes were an excellent
complement to the meat and
were crunchy, firm and savory.
The spinach brought the flavor
of the dish full circle.
Cookhouse has set the standard high for any upcoming
Cajun eateries.
Good food and nice ambience make this is an ideal place
to take a significant other and
enjoy a bottle of wine under the
candlelight.

through Saturday, lunch hours

más familiares, mayores índices
de consumo de ocio, más joven
y más participativa en las redes
sociales, se ha convertido en un
objetivo para las nuevas formas
de márketin, tal como analizó la
VIII Conferencia Portada sobre
Publicidad y Medios Hispanos.
Shakira acaba de entrar en el
libro Guinness de los récords
por ser la celebridad con más
seguidores en Facebook (más de
100 millones); los latinos en Estados Unidos gastan un 46 % más
que la media de los ciudadanos
del país en consumo de música,
y el 87 % tiene un teléfono inteligente, frente al 79 % general.
Es por eso que este seminario
de dos días de duración estudió
cómo las grandes marcas relacionadas con el consumo de ocio
pueden explotar una comunidad
que se ha adaptado a las redes
sociales mejor que ninguna otra
(el 52 % de los latinos del país
dan un “me gusta” en Facebook
en el perfil de una celebridad) y
que sigue utilizando los soportes
clásicos (un 93,5 % de ellos
escucha la radio con asiduidad).
“Ya se empieza a hablar de
una generación bicultural de
latinos. Son 100 % latinos y 100
% estadounidenses”, explicó en
su ponencia Courtney Jones,
vicepresidenta del departamento
de estrategia y crecimiento multicultural de Nielsen.
Su conferencia se llamó “Ra-
diografía del consumo de entretenimiento y música latinos” y no
necesitó más que cifras para dejar
claro el potencial comercial de
una comunidad que escucha 20
horas de música a la semana y que
es de las pocas que mantiene la
costumbre de ir al cine en grupos
de más de tres personas.
“Los latinos tienen un sentido
de la comunidad mayor”, expresó
Jones, al reconocer que esto funciona tanto del público hacia sus
celebridades como de las celebridades hacia su público.
Los latinos gastan una media
de 135 dólares anuales en música,
de los cuales más de la mitad (72
dólares) van destinados a conciertos en vivo.
“Pero donde tiene que trabajar
el márketin es en la radio satélite,
el único sector en el que los latinos gastan menos que la media”,
explicó Jones.
Y para canalizar todas estas
cifras en rendimiento comercial,
tres especialistas discutieron sobre cómo aplicar la mercadotecnia y las redes sociales al público
y las celebridades latinas.
Marcelo Rodríguez, del grupo
Parada, explicó cómo “no hay
normas para enfocar las campañas o los tuits en español y en
inglés”.
“Cada caso se adapta. Investigamos en Facebook o en
Google el público objetivo de

eso, decidimos qué idioma usar

U2 lead singer Bono have joined
forces to write the screenplay for
a film about Ireland’s music scene
in the 1970s, during the heyday of
the “showbands,” the Irish Independent reported on Wednesday.
Neeson, who hails from Northern Ireland, said he and Bono have
been working together on the project for the past six years.
“We chat, or with him a lot of
the time I just listen. He’s a wonderful man. He’s got an idea for
a script which we’ve been working on for the past six years,” the
62-year-old actor said.
Neeson did not offer many
details of the project, but noted
that the film revolves around the

events featuring showbands, popular in Ireland four decades ago.

Spielberg begins shooting

Bungie’s grand opus “Destiny” has been anticipated since
E3, about as much as Apple
fanboys drool over the hint of
new iPhones. This first person
shooter, if based on looks alone,
could have been a carbon copy
or sequel to “Halo,” makes itself
its own game by adding in RPG
elements and giving us all what
we love about big MMORPG’s
(massive multiplayer online roleplaying games).
“Destiny” is a graphical accomplishment on its own. Just staring
up at the sprawling sky is enough
to keep you entertained enough to
forget you didn’t buy the game to
stargaze.
The action is fast-paced with
some challenging boss battles and
great controller functionality that
is so good, in fact, that it’s hard
to remember a game that did this
well of a job. It feels like an extension of your own arm.
The open world that that reaches across a few planets and the
moon is great, but doesn’t quite
feel as open world as it could
have, only allowing you to go

into certain areas of each location.
The social element is the biggest disappointment and consequently was the one thing that
Bungie made sure to flash at E3
as one of the best parts of the
game. The ability to communicate
with players is limited and will
hopefully be ironed out in future
updates or at least in the sequel.
The main complaint I have had
as I level up my character, is that
the missions get really repetitive. Especially, when grinding
it out. Bounties are given to you
in exchange for XP and special
gear. This would be great if there
were a bigger variety of bounty
types. “Destiny’s” bounties are
limited to “go kill these guys” or
“go scan this area” or “go collect
this.” A lot of times these bounties
send you into areas that you have
already explored as well.
The important thing to remember is that this is an MMORPG
and that most likely these problems will be improved upon as the
updates come rolling out.
Overall “Destiny” is addictive
despite any of the glaring issues.
Within four days, I had already
found myself at a level cap of 20.
The good news is there are
ways to keep leveling up based
on the unique weapon and armor
combinations.
For the moment, and until the
holidays, “Destiny” is where it is
at. I could see it getting old over
time without some major updates,
but, for now, I can’t stop playing.

Brazilian actor Paulo Jose deals with
Parkinson’s, keeps working at 77
EFE - Paulo Jose, still one of the
main figures in Brazil’s film industry at 77, said in an interview with
Efe that he had no plans to leave the
stage despite a two-decade battle
with Parkinson’s disease.
The actor has had a long career
in television, but he said his two
strongest passions have always
been movies and theater.
Paulo Jose spoke with Efe after
being honored at the Vitoria Film
Festival.
“Those are the fields I like best,”
he said. “I never had anything
against television for being a product for the masses. I have worked
a lot in TV, but movies and theater
have something that is missing in
television.”
Paulo Jose was diagnosed with
Parkinson’s in 1992 and his speech
has been affected, but that did not
prevent him from joining the cast of
the “In Family” soap opera running
on Brazil’s largest TV network,
playing, what else, a Parkinson’s
patient.
The disease has also diminished
Paulo Jose’s motor abilities, but it

diversifying with the inauguration

restaurant in this San Juan suburb.
The Nabo Restaurant, Wisin told
Efe, “realizes a yearning of many
years to do something different,
to show people that I can thrive in
different areas.”

creo que va a redefinir mucho lo
que somos”, invitó Valderrama
al referirse al novedoso canal
hispano.
También, contó que acaba de
firmar un contrato con Lionsgate
y con Televisa, “para producir y
crear programas de televisión y
películas que de una manera u otra
nos puedan dar a nosotros, como
comunidad latina, una plataforma
en Hollywood”.
Así, A través de su compañía
WV Enterprises el actor, cantante y productor, está generando
nuevas ideas y realizaciones para
impulsar la imagen y las carreras
de los intérpretes latinos.
“Estamos produciendo muchas películas y creo que habrá
muchos anuncios de los editores
el próximo año, que nos van a
ayudar mucho -si Dios quiere- a
rediseñar los estereotipos en los
que no tienen en las películas y
en la televisión”, dijo.
Confesó que en los próximos días, “se va a anunciar algo
grandísimo que será un ejemplo
muy grande y positivo para la
comunidad”, aunque no quiso
dar detalles por no estar todavía
autorizado.
No obstante anunció que el
drama “To whom it may concern”,
escrita y dirigida por Manu Boyer
y que Valderrama protagoniza
junto con la actriz Dawn Olivieri,
está prevista para ser lanzada a
principios del año próximo.
Y en medio de su apretada
agenda, el actor saca tiempo para
apoyar su recién fundada obra
filantrópica ThisHelps.org, que
ayuda a los niños más necesitados,
con la simple compra de un collar
que Valderrama ayudó a diseñar.
“La idea es que cuando se compra una cadena para el cuello, el
hecho es que actualmente usted va
a ofrecer un mes de educación a
un niño”, explicó el actor al hablar
del proyecto que ya ha logrado
cerca del 15 % de la primera
meta de obtener 1000 meses de
educación.
Así, con el cine, la televisión,
la ayuda social y el voto hispano,
el actor está seguro que la comunidad latina en Estados Unidos
pronto va alcanzar el lugar que
se merece.
“Este noviembre la comunidad
latina se hará escuchar muy fuerte.
¡Póngale la firma!”, concluyó
Valderrama.

James Bond film, the 24th
installment of the popular spy
series, will begin on Dec. 6 at
Pinewood Studios near London,
Variety reported.
Sam Mendes is back to direct
the new film following his work
on the hugely successful “Skyfall” (2012).
Daniel Craig will once again
play Agent 007 in the new
installment, starring in his
fourth Bond flick after his turns
in “Casino Royale” (2006),
“Quantum of Solace” (2008)
and “Skyfall.”
Rounding out the main cast
are Ralph Fiennes as “M,”

Estoy embarazada del exnovio de
mi hermana y ya tengo tres meses.
Todo empezó cuando mi hermana
me dijo que no estaba enamorada
de su novio y que no sabía cómo
decirle que no quería estar con él.
Yo le dije que le podía ayudar a darle

era lo mejor para él. Nos quedamos
de ver en un bar y justo antes de que
le dijera lo que mi hermana me había
pedido, él me dijo que no estaba feliz

y que yo no debía decirle lo que mi
hermana pensaba. Después de un

había dejado de pensar en mí desde

y que se había limitado por respeto

Primero que nada, quiero decirte
que lo que hiciste no tiene ética.
Es una falta de respeto y además
me temo decirte que es muy probable que pierdas la confianza de tu
hermana y de tu familia. Pero para
solucionar tu problema tienes que
comenzar por partes. Primero que
nada debes hablar con tus padres y
platicarles de tu situación. Deberás
decirles los detalles así como me
los has platicado a mí. Después,
tendrás que enfrentar a tu hermana
y decirle lo que sucedió aquella
noche. El exnovio de tu hermana
también debe de saber lo que está
sucediendo, pues como padre
biológico de tu bebé, tiene derecho
a saber lo que pasa.
Es muy probable que todos terminen molestos contigo, sin embargo
esa será la única manera con la que
tú te sentirás un poco más tranquila.
Recuerda que la verdad siempre
sale a relucir, y si no lo dices ahora,
eventualmente se enterarán de la
situación. Además, los genes son
de ambos sexos por lo que existen
grandes posibilidades de que se
parezca a él.
Recuerda tomar la situación con
calma y antes de hacer cualquier
cosa, piensa en las repercusiones
tanto buenas como malas que podrían surgir.
