VEDIC SOLIDS The leading point of this research project in the visual arts field is the idea that THE NUMBER can lead to the birth of SHAPE. Our research subject comes from the Indian culture and is called The Vedic Square; it represents a square shaped table containing numbers. In the traditional Indian culture, the Vedic Square represented, beyond its mathematical worth, an instrument through which planet relationships, geometrical diagrams, specific sonic vibrations, colors and even human moods were measured by using The Number. By extrapolating the construction of the algorithm that corresponds to each number in the Vedic Square to a cubic numeric matrix and tracing the locations of those numbers we can obtain three-dimensional geometric structures. The same shapes, built by the same rules, but this time in the sound field become audio sequences. By rotating the shapes either to the left or to the right, both the polar aspect of numbers and the depth of information stored within the Vedic Square become visible. From this perspective we can refer to the behavior of some main particles of matter, which scientists describe as having a rotational spin. The evolution of the piece of work towards a kinetic ensemble is imposed as a necessity. Video projection as a means of materializing objects has the chance of being more than a technical support for the visualization of the image, through its character; it can become an element with symbolic value. The projection of light on a dark screen was what led Plato to formulating his cave myth. A direct reference to the platonic way of thinking can be found in the title, Vedic Solids, because they are meant to be a reply to the Platonic Solids. The plastic composition, approached here through the perspective of a logic that involves the presence of the number, tends to reach the Platonic aesthetic ideal which states that the purpose of art should attempt to reach the pure essence of the real, not simply be an imitative act of nature.
