Adaptasi Dewey Decimal Classification dalam Nippon Decimal Classification,
Jepang
mengetahui latar belakang dilakukannya adaptasi DDC menjadi NDC.
perpustakaan Japan Library Association (JLA).
mencukupi kebutuhkan klasifikasi terbitan Jepang.

Abstract
Adaptasi Dewey Decimal Classification dalam Nippon Decimal Classification, Jepang
(Systematic and Hierarchical Overview)
Dewey Decimal Classification Adaptation in Nippon Decimal Classification, Japan
Dewey Decimal Classification is the oldest and widest system used by libraries
worldwide. In its development, the system has not been able to meet all the needs of its users.
However, the DDC system has contributed significantly to the birth of other library classification
systems. One of classification systems which is born of this classification is NDC system
(Nippon Decimal Classification). The study aims to determine the history and development of
NDC system, systematic, and the hierachy applied in NDC. Besides, this research tries to
identify the background of DDC adaptation which is applied to become NDC. The research
method used in this research is qualitative research method by collecting relevant documents,
then they are analyzed. Based on the result of the research, NDC system history and its
development are revealed. NDC system is the largest system used in Japan. NDC system is
managed by a library association (Japan Library Association (JLA)). The system does not
undergo any revision periodically as seventh annual revision on DDC. The systematics in the
NDC system is almost similar to what is applied in DDC system. Both use the tithing system
with hierarchical notation system. Based on the result of the research, the background of DDC
adaptation which is applied to become NDC, which is to meet the needs of classification issued
by Japan. Adaptation is done starting from the main class since it is considered less appropriate
and less suffice to meet the needs of classification issued by Japan.

BAB I
PENDAHULUAN
1. 1. Pendahuluan
Klasifikasi merupakan kegiatan manusia untuk mengelompokkan ilmu
pengetahuan ke dalam tata urutan yang sistematis. (Basuki, 1993:395). Penerapan
UDC (Universal Decimal Classification), the Library of Congress Classification
(LCC), the Bliss Classification (BC), dan the Colon Classification (CC).

wilayah dan sejarah. Sebagai contoh, untuk kelas bahasa;
DDC hanya mendapat penomoran 297. Pada tahun 1987, pemerintah telah
mengeluarkan keputusan bersama Menteri Agama dan Pendidikan dan
Kebudayaan RI. Nomor 159 th. 1987, Nomor 054/ C/U/1987 tentang Adaptasi
sistem DDC. Seperti halnya negara pengguna DDC yang lain, Iran pun
memberikan perhatian khusus pada kelas-kelas tertentu. Dalam mendukung dan
mengatasi masalah penggunaan notasi wilayah geografi pada sistem DDC,
Perpustakaan Nasional Republik Iran menerbitkan aturan klasifikasi untuk
geografi Persia yang berjudul Dewey Decimal Classification: Geography of Iran
(Radah bandi-I duhadih-I Diwai-I: Gusrafiya-I Irani-I). Selain itu diterbitkan pula
Dewey Decimal Classification: Iranian Language (Radah bandi-I duhadih-I
Diwai-I: Zuhaanha-I Irani-I) untuk notasi bahasa. Untuk kelas notasi sastra
diterbitkan Dewey Decimal Classification: Iranian Literature (Radah bandi-I
duhadih-I diwai-I: Adabiyat Irani-I). (Arianto, 2006:311-314)
Ahmad Tahiri Iraqi seorang pustakawan Iraq, menyusun skema klasifikasi
Islam dengan judul “Islam: Dewey Decimal Classification and Relative Index”
yang dipublikasikan oleh The Institute for Research and Planning in Science and
Education, Iran tahun 1975.
Practice in University, hlm. 159 dalam artikel M. Arianto Arianto “Islamic
Knowledge Classification Scheme”, 2006:312-314). Sejumlah 17 perpustakaan

Jepang menjadi penyebab tingginya minat baca masyarakat Jepang.
kepustakawanan
di
Jepang.
Pada
tahun
1906
untuk
pertama
kalinya
diselenggarakan konferensi seluruh perpustakaan di Jepang. Dan pada tahun 1929,
JLA menjadi anggota dari International Federation of Library Associations and
Institutions (IFLA).
Division, University Library Division, Junior College Division, School Library
Division, Special Library Division, dan the Library Education Division.2
klasifikasi, termasuk sistem NDC.

Jepang UGM, perpustakaan koleksi Jepang UI, Perpustakaan The Japan
a. Bagaimana sejarah dan perkembangan NDC di Jepang?
10
1. 4. Manfaat Penelitian
a. Menambah pengetahuan tentang sistem klasifikasi, khususnya adaptasi
Bab
I Pendahuluan, menguraikan latar belakang masalah, rumusan masalah, tujuan
penelitian, manfaat penelitian, serta sistematika penulisan. Bab II Tinjauan
memenuhi kebutuhan klasifikasi terbitan Jepang. Adaptasi kelas utama
terperinci.
5. 2. Saran
1. Pola adaptasi sistem DDC di Jepang menghasilkan sebuah sistem
klasifikasi lokal yaitu sistem NDC.
75
kebutuhan klasifikasi Jepang. Penomoran DDC yang dainggap tidak
mencukupi kebutuhan Jepang kemudian diadaptasi sehingga dapat
mengakomodasi kebutuhan klasifikasi Jepang. Pola adaptasi serupa, yakni
sistem klasifikasi.
