Supported by The Essentials of Air Conditioning HVAC systems can be in place for up to 30 years and can consume up to 60% of a buildings energy and 30% of its water. Employing good design and selecting the right components at day one makes both economic and environmental sense. This course is ideal for: Graduate design engineers The ‘Essentials of Air conditioning’ series delivers the vital information needed to work confidently on HVAC projects. Contractors/installers Day 1: Psychrometric Theory & Psychrometric Processes Psychrometrics is the engineering of physical and thermodynamic properties of gas-vapor mixtures. Do you rely on your computer output for this information? How do you know it’s right? Understanding psychrometrics and its application is a crucial component of HVAC design. Psychrometric Theory Introduces the topic of psychrometrics and the theory behind the chart. It covers the physical properties of moist air and teaches you to plot your own chart from the relevant data. You will learn how human comfort fits in with the psychrometric chart, how to read the chart, how to plot basic air conditioning processes and calculate supply air quantities and temperatures. Psychrometric Processes Working with the psychrometric chart to understand a range of air conditioning processes and considerations including equipment heat gains, mixing air streams, sensible heat ratios and more in-depth calculations for typical air conditioning systems. The Essentials of Air Conditioning series has nine topics: Psychrometric - Theory Cooling towers - selection Psychrometric - Processes Air Filters Cooling tower – installation, operation and maintenance Fans Pumps – general characteristics Duct sizing Pumps – selection and applications. Day 2: Filters, Fans & Duct Sizing Sales engineers Engineering students Energy efficiency is becoming increasingly important. Filters, fans and sizing of ductwork systems can all impact efficiency as well as quality of the indoor environment. These sessions will give an understanding of the key elements and how to stop problems before they show up. Facility managers Filters The essentials for selecting and installing air filters. Covers identifying different types of air filters and their uses, selecting the appropriate air filter for an application, and how to interpret air filter test reports. Fans Select fans and design for their use in air conditioning systems. The course will cover fan types and characteristics, fan control strategies, noise issues and gives an overview of pressure measurements. Duct Sizing An introduction to efficient sizing and laying out of ductwork systems. Looks at factors affecting ductwork system design, pressure loss calculation, pressure loss of fittings and procedures for sizing duct systems. Course dates and locations Melbourne 1-2 July, 2009 Presenter Andrew Pang Andrew has more than 30 years experience in refrigeration and air conditioning and has been teaching in the field for almost the same amount of time. Project work has included responsibility for the design, installation and commissioning of a range of projects including cooling machines for open-heart surgery, beverage-chilling equipment and environmental testing chambers as well as a variety of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment at a state-of-the-art pharmaceutical facility. Andrew also taught at RMIT University for many years, and for the last 10 years he has delivered various courses for AIRAH.
