Youth Sunday School High School Sunday School in the library. Genesis – First Gospel Text -- Genesis 3:1-24. Word Definitions: Sin ‘Missing the mark’; rebellion directed against God; violation of what God’s glory and holiness demands (Romans 3:23) Death alienation from God (Ephesians 2:1-3) Quotes and meditations for the Week: The story presupposes that primitive man was in a state of ignorance, not of intellectual or moral perfection, and it tells how that ignorant innocence came to pass into conscious sin. Alexander Maclaren Book of Genesis p.6 These are ever the methods of Satan. He first suggests that restriction is unkind. That is the very spirit of the thinking of men today. They are advised to break through all bonds and bars and limitations, in the measure in which they are restricted. G. Campbell Morgan Great Chapters of the Bible p.23 The incredulous tone – “So God has actually said …?” – is both disturbing and flattering: it smuggles in the assumption that God’s word is subject to our judgment. … the first doctrine to be denied is judgment. If modern denials of it are very differently motivated, they are equally at odds with revelation. … The pattern of sin runs right through the act, for Eve listened to a creature instead of the Creator, followed her impressions against her instructions, and made selffulfillment her goal. Derek Kidner Genesis pp.67,68 [bold emphasis added] We also see what is the cause of death, namely alienation from God. … Wherefore the question is superfluous, how it was that God threatened death to Adam on the day in which he should touch the fruit, when he long deferred the punishment? For then was Adam consigned to death and death began its reign in him, until supervening grace should bring a remedy. No matter how discouraged he must have become at many reversals he experienced, we never see Joseph doing less than his best. In moments of crisis we see him choosing to do what is right. Rather than being eaten up with bitterness against his brothers, or returning hatred for hatred, Joseph looks beyond them to see the hand of God. And he remains sure that God’s hand is on him ‘for good’. How often we look at our tragedies as injustice, or as punishment for some unknown fault. We need more of Joseph’s trust in the loving goodness of God. L.O. Richards Teacher’s Commentary p.69 Welcome to our Church We have nursery (up to 18 months) and Toddler facilities (ages 18 months to 3 years old) Any of the attendants or greeters will be glad to show you where they are located. Behind the dim unknown Standeth God within the shadows, Keeping watch upon His own.’ James Russell Lowell, 1819-1891 Are there sin management courses? Joseph had done his best to avoid temptation. ... Peril, moral as well as physical, can often be located, anticipated, and in consequence avoided. It is folly not to do so. ... He never cherished sin and prepared the way for moral catastrophe. “How can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?” had been his answer. There is no other. ... Observe that Joseph called sin by its proper name. There is the prime requirement of holiness. He also stated that a sin against another person is a sin against God. So did the Prodigal Son when he ‘came to himself’ (Luke 15:17). Sin thrives on soft terminology and avoids the issues of plain truth. Let us be accurate in definition. E.M. Blaiklock Handbook of Bible Characters p.50 He knew his life was an open book before God. By now in his life Joseph’s God had become more real to him than anything or anyone else on earth. Charles Swindoll Joseph p.28 To a certain extent, society sanctions sin in everyone. Our civilization fosters vanity, wantonness, and sensuality under the pseudonyms of ease, elegance, and gaiety. Instead of exciting abhorrence, they endear us to the persons by whom they are indulged. Many want no restraint but justify the grossest immoralities – they call drunkenness conviviality, whoredom youthful indiscretion. Thus they commit sin without fear, persist in it without remorse, and even glory in their shame. Only by the power of the Holy Spirit can we be holy. Lord, may we share Thine attitude toward sin.
