You sports camp can include access to the following AIS facilities: AIS Athletes Village The AIS Athletes village offers individuals and sporting teams the opportunity to stay on-site during your time in Canberra. It caters for groups of all sizes (with capacity for up to 250 guests) and suitable on-site accommodation also available for coaches, support crew and coach drivers. Other facilities at the AIS » AIS Visitor Centre — go on an AIS Tour or stock up on exclusive merchandise at the AIS Shop. » AIS Charlesworth or Visitor Centre Theatrette — the theatrettes are available for hire for movie and special nights. » Games Room — located within the AIS Athletes’ Village, this offers video games, a pool table and other recreational activities. » Studio One — located within the AIS Athletes’ Village, the studio is a large space suitable for activity nights and group gatherings. » Vending machines and public telephones are also available. The AIS Campus also has ample free off-street parking for vehicles and buses, and is monitored by security guards and CCTV 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Topics include training diet, food for competition, weight management and hydration. » Physiotherapy — learn about the physical therapies used by high performance athletes and gain an insight into musculoskeletal injury prevention and management. » Psychology — learn how to gain that winning psychological edge. Topics can include communication, team building, confidence, concentration, time/stress management, goal setting and pre-competition preparation. » Recovery — learn basic recovery techniques to prevent exercise aches and pains, and the various recovery techniques used by Australia’s high performance athletes to maintain optimum condition. » Skill acquisition — learn about the factors that affect the acquisition, performance and retention of sports skills. » Strength and conditioning — learn about new techniques used to improve flexibility, strength and overall performance. » Athlete presentation — join one of our athletes as they speak about their experiences training at the AIS. Take the opportunity to ask questions and learn what it is like to be one of Australia’s best. 5 Practical sessions Practical sessions by world-leading sports scientists provide a unique, hands-on experience for your team or group. Recovery Participate in a practical recovery session. The session can include techniques such as an active recovery lesson in a pool, contrast immersion using the spa and plunge pool, and contrast showers. Self-massage Be guided through the art of self-massage by an AIS physical therapist. They will teach the various methods you can use to take care of your body through massage treatment. Strength and conditioning An AIS strength and conditioning coach will take you through a practical session in the gym and explain how to design programs to meet the specific needs of your sport. Self-run training session Get active with a self-run training session on the sporting fields and courts used by Australian athletes. This is a great time for your coaches to run through skills and training specific to your sport. Trained by some of the best Take part in an interactive session run by some of Australia’s coaches or athletes in our world-class facilities. Rub shoulders with, and learn from, sports best as you go through training drills, skills and match-play exercises. Take on the locals Give your team a real test and compete against a local Canberra sporting team while in town. Our sports camps consultants can put you in contact with a variety of organisations, sporting teams and schools. Fitness classes Keep your team fit with our fun and challenging fitness classes. Whether you are after a boot camp-style class or Pilates, our fitness classes will provide a motivating and positive training regimen for your team. Biomechanics and performance analysis This session includes a presentation from a biomechanics and performance analysis staff member on how these fields have been used to develop, analyse and improve the performance of Australian athletes. Your group will be shown equipment, techniques and processes used by the biomechanics and performance analysis department to prevent injury, develop technique and improve performance. 6 7 Learning at its best At the AIS, we understand there is more to sporting success than just training and competition. That is why our athletes are constantly watching, learning and researching new ways to improve their performance. The National Sport Information Centre (NSIC) at the AIS is a focal point for athlete research and learning. More than just a library, it is Australia’s premier information resource centre for sport. Along with a comprehensive collection of sports books, magazines, videos, DVDs and images, the NSIC also provides access to sport research databases, audiovisual facilities, photocopiers and the internet. NSIC staff members are available to assist your team or group to access the collection, databases and facilities. 8 9 Stay and eat with us Stay in the AIS Athletes Village—it caters for groups of all sizes, with capacity for up to 250 guests. Guests usually stay in single-room accommodation, with communal living room and bathroom facilities. Self-contained units are also available on request. Dining Dine with the athletes training at the AIS and enjoy a full buffet of healthy, nutritious sports performance meals in the AIS Dining Hall. With a wide range of hot and cold selections at every meal, the dining hall ‘feeds athletes for today and educates them for tomorrow’. Meals vary each day, with all menus carefully designed by AIS nutritionists. Nutritional information cards are provided for each dish on the menu.
