Position: AIS Chair Term: 1 Year General Description During the Area Chair’s year term, the chair secures the meeting site. The chair assists the Pierce County AIS members in regards to interpreting the Al Anon/Alateen Service Manual and how it applies to the fellowship in Pierce County. The chair appoints coordinators and ad hoc committees in accordance with the directives of the Washington Area Handbook. ƒ Coordinates, motivates, and assist with problem solving with officers, coordinators, district representative, and other members of the AIS. ƒ Responsibilities Lead all monthly Peirce County AIS meetings, usually held the first Tuesday of each month. May attend, but does not preside over AIS committee meetings. Attends, as the AIS Liaison member, the five Washington District Meetings to give AIS report. Attends, as the AIS Liaison member, AWSC meetings. Aids treasurer in setting up a year-end statement and proposed budget. Receives email inquiries from web site and replies in a timely matter. Position Requirements and Desired/Helpful Skills ƒ Good leadership skills that demonstrate a serving attitude, rather than a dictating approach. Communication and cooperating with others is an essential key element of a good chair. ƒ Computer word processing ability, Internet access and having an email address, are necessary. Month Meetings Each Chairman has autonomy, within the provisions of the Handbook, in conducting business, specifically handling motions and voting. To maintain harmony and unity, we strive to incorporate Knowledge-Based Decision Making and to eliminate debate whenever possible in our motion/voting process. We strive for a Win-Win attitude, working together to make the wisest decision possible for the good of Al-Anon The Agenda: The Opening, Announcements, Reading of the minutes by the secretary, a Treasurer's report, short reports are given by Officers, Coordinators (and committee chairpersons, if applicable). New business includes the motions, new discussion items or motions that may come from groups, districts, Area, or from a previous Assembly Things that may come up: If an elected officer or any coordinator is not meeting the requirements of the position, it is the chairperson’s responsibility to speak with them. It is very important to keep principles above personalities in all of our endeavors, but specifically in this situation. Keep an eye on the problem, not the person. Stay focused on the solution. Though the Chairperson appoints coordinators or committee members, she/he is not expected to direct or supervise them. It is suggested the Chairperson be available for questions, problem resolution and to offer suggestions if asked or if it seems appropriate. By past practice, the Chairperson is considered a member of any Area-level committee, although not expected to attend unless the Chairperson deems it advisable Information Service Chair/ Liaison Expenses Information Service pays the AIS chair/Liaison member's expenses to Pre-Conference and Assembly a long as the prudent reserve is whole. These expenses and those incurred by attendance as the AIS Liaison to Area World Service Committee meeting are paid according to the same general guidelines as District Representatives, but the expenses are paid from the AIS budget.
