Reading Counts is Kicking Off! Valencia Elementary School’s motivational reading program, will officially kick-off in October. The program is designed to encourage our 2nd through 6th grade students to read at their own pace and be rewarded for their efforts. Our PTA fully sponsors this program, which is run by Valencia’s LMRC (Library Media Resource Center) staff and the PTA LMRC Committee. How Reading Counts Works Parents: This is your introduction packet to Reading Counts 2014-2015! Reading Counts starts in October or sooner. All students and parents must read, sign the Reading Counts Rules & Honer Code on pages 3 & 4 and return Student Honor Code. For a complete list of Reading Counts quizzes, please go to the Quiz List Interactive link located in the LMRC Tab of the Valencia School website. The Reading Counts Prize week schedule will be posted at a later date. Identify a reward level your child can realistically attain. If you’re not sure, talk with your child’s teacher. Valencia has over 53,000 titles in its Reading Counts database. After Reading one of these books, the student will take a short quiz at LMRC to verify their comprehension. Before taking a quiz the Reading Log is required to be completed and signed by the Teachers. The student must pass the quiz to earn points. If the student doesn’t pass, he or she may retake the quiz up to two more times. Classroom computers also have access to Reading Counts, so students may take quizzes in class as teachers and time permit. For each quiz passed, students earn points based on the point value of the book they read. The point values of books are listed on the Quiz List Interactive link located in the LMRC Tab of the Valencia School Website. As students earn more points, they receive rewards when a Reading Counts point milestone is reached. Prizes are awarded to students once per trimester during Reading Counts Prize Week at the students’ library times. Those who reach the top level for their grade by the deadline in May, are invited to the Reading Counts Awards ceremony to be held in June, where they receive recognition for their efforts. Finding a Reading Counts Book Reading Counts books are identified in the Valencia School Library with a red dot on the book spine. Students can search for books by title, author and lexile, a measurement of reading comprehension, from the Quiz List Interactive site, which can be accessed from the LMRC as well as from home. While all the titles listed in Quiz List Interactive are in our quiz database, our library may not have the book in its inventory. We encourage students to visit their local public library to seek appropriate titles. Guidelines to Student Success Reading Counts is a long-term “assignment” to encourage our students to read. It is not a competition. We recommend students read regularly and at their own pace. We discourage students waiting Reading Logs are provided for your signature until the last month to try and “cram” for prizes. It rarely works and is not fun for the student or the parent. We ask that parents and to all students, so make students carefully read the rules for the Reading Counts program on sure your child uses it! It’s a great tool to monitor page 3 of this packet. Parents and students must also read and sign your child’s progress! the Reading Counts Student Honor Code before students are allowed to participate in the program. Students who violate the Honor Code Happy Reading! will be held accountable for their actions. Page 2
