Lyn Roberta Goldman
Lyn Goldman was born and raised in Regina to parents who placed great value on education and community
service. She has exemplified both values throughout her life. When Lyn was six, her mother Dorothy sent her
and her older sister Barbara to elocution lessons and children’s theater, where Lyn discovered that while on
stage she was no longer a shy little girl but graceful and confident. That discovery has served her well ever
since.
Lyn began studying for an Arts degree at Queen’s University, but left for a secretarial job at a TV production
company in Toronto, followed by a similar job at Columbia Pictures in Hollywood. Her love of travel called
and she left for Europe, living on odd jobs for almost a year. She then returned to Regina, where she was a
writer-producer at CKCK-TV. With five years experience on her resumé Lyn discovered that, in 1962, no
one in Toronto would hire a female producer, so she spent time in Europe before coming home to serve as the
performing arts officer for the Saskatchewan Centennial Corporation.
Lyn’s first job with the University of Saskatchewan (Regina Campus) was as publicity and information
director in 1968. Given the opportunity to take one course each semester, she became an adult student,
eventually earning her BA Hons and master’s degrees in English. While working toward her degrees she
served in several capacities at the University of Regina, including coordinating a feasibility study for the
School of Journalism and Communications, as well as serving as communications and programming officer
for University Extension, Public Relations coordinator, and head of Certificate Programs. After formal
retirement in 1989 Lyn taught introductory English night courses for several years.
Throughout her life Lyn has been involved with numerous local, provincial, and national professional and
cultural organizations. She is the deserving recipient of many awards, including the Golden Jubilee Award
(2002), YWCA Woman of the Year Award, and the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal (2005).

PRESENTATION OF CANDIDATE FOR HONORARY DEGREE
Presented by Jennifer Tupper, PhD – Dean of Education
Norman John (Jack) MacKenzie
Growing up in the small community of Franklin, Manitoba, Jack MacKenzie recalls living outdoors all
summer and skating on sloughs and ponds in winter. If those experiences had not already set the direction for
his life and career, four summers as a university student conducting geodetic surveys in the Yukon, and
another working as a counselor and guide at two summer camps in northern Ontario confirmed it. Jack has
had a distinguished career in physical and outdoor education as a teacher, administrator, innovator and
volunteer.
During his career Jack earned six university degrees and began his teaching career at Swan River, Manitoba.
He was appointed physical education consultant for Regina Public Schools (RPS) in 1956. Over his 30-year
career with RPS he introduced several innovations to the system’s physical education curriculum, including
outdoor education. Most notably, Jack co-founded Saskairie, an outdoor camp and environmental education
centre located near Carlyle, at the edge of Moose Mountain Provincial Park.
Through canoe trips in northern Saskatchewan Jack encouraged children from southern Saskatchewan and
Aboriginal children from the north to come together on outdoor expeditions. He also invited Elders and
others from White Bear First Nation to come to Saskairie to share their skills and their stories with students.
Jack is a regular visitor to the Regina school named in his honour. A sculpture he commissioned, called The
Joy of Effort, encourages students to get involved. A corresponding award recognizes the student who best
exhibits the good feeling and satisfaction that comes from doing one’s best. He also provided seed money for
a Random Acts of Kindness Fund that provides opportunities to students at the school to initiate and
implement projects to help needy individuals or groups, or environmental causes.
During his career Jack has provided leadership to a number of local, provincial and national organizations.
He has received several awards for his work in advancing physical and outdoor education, and the
Saskatchewan Order of Merit for his commitment to teaching and volunteer service.

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of
Canada (NSERC) Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate
Scholarship – Doctoral Program (CGS D), as well as a
NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship – Michael Smith
Foreign Study Supplement (CGS MSFSS), and the Shen Kuo
Travel Bursary.
Ryan’s thesis, “Lineup Composition Effects on Eyewitness
Identification” was highly regarded by external examiner Dr.
D. Stephen Lindsay of the University of Victoria. Dr. Lindsay
noted that “although there is prior research in this area, the
meta-analysis and two experiments reported here add
significantly to understanding.” Dr. Oriet further praises
Ryan’s work by noting that “the strength of his dissertation is
evident in the fact that two of its chapters have already been
published in high visibility forensic psychology journals.”
Ryan has an exceptional publication record. In just five
years, he has produced nine high-quality publications,
including two meta-analyses worthy of special mention.
Additionally, he was accepted for publication in the
prestigious Psychological Bulletin, the fourth-highest ranked
of all 564 psychology journals indexed in the ThomsonReuters Journal Citation Reports.
The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research is pleased
to have Dr. Ryan Fitzgerald as an alumnus and congratulates
him on receiving one of its most distinguished awards, the
President’s Distinguished Graduate Student Award.
University Prize in Science
The University Prize in Science is awarded at Fall
Convocation to the most distinguished student graduating
with a first degree from the Faculty of Science. Courtney
Helene Mish is this year’s recipient. A Campion College
student, Courtney is graduating with a Bachelor of Science
degree majoring in Biology and with a minor in Psychology,
achieving Distinction with a CGPA and PGPA of 84.70%.
Courtney graduated from Melville Comprehensive School
in June 2011. While studying at the University of Regina, she
has received many scholarships in recognition of her
academic achievements, including the Reverend Isidore
Gorski Scholarship (Campion College), Centennial Merit Plus
Scholarship, Cougar Women’s Hockey Athletic Award
(member of the team in 2012/2013), Academic All Canadian
Scholarship (2012 Fall, 2013 Winter, 2013 Fall, 2014
Winter), Academic Silver Scholarship. Courtney has been on
the Dean of Science’s Honours List in 2012 Winter, 2014
Winter and 2014 Fall).
The Faculty of Science congratulates Courtney on her
accomplishments and wishes her the best of luck with her
future endeavours.
University Prize in Social Work
The University Prize in Social Work is awarded to the
most distinguished graduate of the Faculty of Social Work
receiving a first degree at Fall Convocation. This year’s
recipient is Cara Lee Custead.
Throughout her studies at the Saskatoon campus of the
University of Regina, Cara absorbed from her instructors deep
knowledge of social justice, including in-depth studies of
community development, project development, empowerment, dignity, equality, oppression, diversity, harm reduction,
ideologies fuelling social policy, autonomy, etc. She desired
to apply all she had learned to combat a specific social
injustice throughout her social work career, but initially was
uncertain about the particular injustice she wished to focus on.
Cara holds a strong conviction that she was meant to
dedicate her life to the service of others, especially to those
experiencing marginalization. Cara started her own non-profit
organization called Project Oaks, which seeks to tell the
stories of individuals with mental illness as a means to reduce
the stigma and exclusion these people face daily.
She believes her Social Work education has empowered
her to dismantle the stigma and oppression of individuals who
have experienced mental illness in Saskatchewan and Alberta.
In turn, her faith and the support of her family are
fundamental in believing in the possible redemption of both
her suffering and that of others. Now living in Edmonton with
her husband Gavin Taylor, Cara hopes to obtain a MSW and
do clinical Social Work in the mental health field.
The Faculty of Social Work wishes Cara the best in her
future studies.
President’s Medal
The University of Regina President’s Medal is awarded at
each Spring and Fall Convocation to a student receiving a first
degree who has shown academic excellence as well as major
leadership and commitment to extra-curricular activities while
a student.
This fall, the medal is awarded to Ms Sara Lynn
Illerbrun of the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies.
Ms Illerbrun’s program of study was the Bachelor of
Kinesiology, majoring in Human Kinetics. Her graduating
and cumulative average is an outstanding 94.02%.
Sara’s academic career at the University of Regina began in
September 2011, as a graduate of Shaunavon School,
Shaunavon, SK. Sara is part of the first cohort of the U of R
Circle of Scholars program and received this scholarship and
recognition each of her undergraduate years. Sara was on the
Dean’s List every semester she attended classes as a full time
student. In addition, Sara has received the following
scholarships: Academic Gold Prize (twice), Dr. Robert
McCulloch Scholarship, and the John Spencer Middleton &
Jack Spencer Gordon Middleton Scholarship. Sara also
President’s Distinguished Graduate Student Award
The President’s Distinguished Graduate Student Award is

received the Saskatchewan Physical Education Association
(SPEA) Book Prize on two separate occasions.
Sara’s academic achievements have been a joy for her
home Faculty, most notably her first 100%, a very first for the
professor, in Human Anatomy in her second semester.
During her studies at the University of Regina, Sara received
three additional course grades of 100%, and earned grades of
95% or higher in twenty courses. Sara completed her
Fieldwork at the LifeMark Health Centre in Saskatoon. Her
Fieldwork supervisor wrote: “Sara is very organized and
strives for high achievement personally and professionally.
She is very knowledgeable, intelligent and is able comfortably
to put theory into practical applications.”
One of Sara’s professors stated, “While Sara's academic
achievements are impressive, for some it is her demeanour
that will leave a lasting impression. She excelled in her ability
to develop rapport while working alongside youth and adults
experiencing disability. Through adapted physical activity
courses in which she enrolled, she aimed to address health
and wellness disparities in urban and rural communities. Her
initiative to propose and/or facilitate inclusive and meaningful
physical activity opportunities was altruistic in nature. One
project in particular caught the attention of a manager within
the Ministry of Social Services. Sara and her project
colleagues were invited to collaborate with the Ministry office
to move their innovative idea for community inclusion from
paper to reality.”
Sara embodies the motto “As one who serves” through her
volunteer work as a UR Ambassador, and as a UR Guarantee
mentor, and in the community. The Faculty of Kinesiology &
Health Studies, along with the University of Regina, is proud
of assisting with the development of this remarkable student.
(For more information about Sara’s accomplishments, see

graduates’ gowns are scarlet with royal blue around the collar,
down the front and around the sleeves. Students graduating
from the University of Regina who have been registered
through a federated college wear the following: red gowns for
Campion College students, sky blue gowns for First Nations
University students, and royal blue gowns for Luther College
students. Serving members of the Canadian Forces may wear
their dress uniform without an academic gown, and wear a
hood corresponding to the degree they are receiving.
At today’s ceremony, students are formally hooded by the
Dean of their respective Faculty. The University of Regina
also permits members of the platform party to hood graduates
of their immediate family.
ACADEMIC REGALIA
The academic regalia worn by the graduates and the
members of the platform procession may consist of a gown, a
hood or stole (worn over the shoulders), and a hat or
mortarboard. All universities have distinctive academic dress
for each degree conferred and, at times, for the disciplines in
which the degree is awarded. Thus the colourful variety of
academic dress worn by members of the platform procession,
who have graduated from dozens of Canadian and
international universities, and represent particular groups.
With the exception of students graduating with a PhD and
federated college students, graduates wear black gowns. PhD

On June 6, 2004, at a Special Convocation ceremony held to
confer an honorary degree on Her Royal Highness The
Princess Royal, the University of Regina began the tradition
of having the honorary degree recipients sign an Honorary
Degrees Register. Made of dark green leather embossed in
gold with the University of Regina crest and lettering, the
book was designed by Brenda Righetti and Bev Liski, and
was handcrafted by J.L. Perkins Bookbinder Ltd.
ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE OF THE UNIVERSITY
The University of Regina operates under the terms of The
University of Regina Act. Convocation is composed of the
Chancellor, the Senate, all graduates of the University of
Regina, all graduates of the University of Saskatchewan at
Regina, and such other classes of persons as the Senate may
from time to time determine. Graduates of the University of
Saskatchewan, as defined by The University Act, 1968, may
become members of Convocation of the University of Regina
by notifying the Secretary in writing. Convocation meets
twice annually, in June and October, unless there are
extraordinary circumstances.
The Chancellor is elected by the members of Senate, holds
office for three years, presides over Convocation, confers
degrees and is ex officio Chair of the Senate and a member of
the Board of Governors.
Senate is the University’s “window on the world.” It is
concerned with the academic welfare of the institution and
has a variety of duties and powers. Most of the broader issues
of academic policy within the University are reserved for
Senate’s approval. In another role, it acts as an ultimate court
in academic affairs. The membership of Senate includes
persons, ex officio, by virtue of their offices. Convocation
elects another fourteen members of Convocation to the
Senate. Students registered in the university elect six students
of the University to Senate. In addition, any professional
society, group or organization in the province that Senate
believes contributes in a significant way to the social,
economic and cultural welfare of the province may be
represented on Senate.
The Board of Governors consists of eleven members and
is responsible for overseeing the administrative and business
affairs of the University. It ultimately has authority in all
matters related to the raising and spending of University
funds, and the acquisition and management of University
property.
Council is the senior legislative body on academic matters.
Its membership includes administrative officers, all Deans and
directors of academic programs, all members of the teaching
staff except sessional lecturers, and a number of student
representatives. All matters of substance related to the
academic affairs of the University must be considered and

The Executive of the University of Regina Council
(Executive of Council) has been empowered by Council to

of this University.
Disciplines that are related to one another in the broader
areas of teaching are, for purposes of administrative and
academic planning, brought together into Faculties, of which
there are currently ten. Each Faculty is headed by a Dean;
formal membership includes the Dean and the teaching
members of the various associated disciplines. The Deans
arerecognized by The University of Regina Act as being the
chief executive officers of their respective Faculties and are
directly responsible to the President, through the Provost and
Vice-President (Academic). Subject to the statutes of the
Senate and the University of Regina Council, each Faculty
has charge of all matters of scholarship in its disciplines and

UNIVERSITY OF REGINA ALUMNI
ASSOCIATION
As graduates of the University of Regina,
students belong to a family now numbering more
than 65,000 alumni. Membership in the
University of Regina Alumni Association is automatic upon
convocation from the University of Regina or if written
permission has been granted by the Alumni Board.
Formed in 1974, the Alumni Association, a non-profit
charitable organization, is governed by a volunteer board of
directors. The association promotes the accomplishments and
supports the future development of the University of Regina,
its students and alumni. This is reflected in the Alumni
Association’s vision statement: “We are the leading
proponent of our University and our alumni throughout the
world.”
Through fundraising and partnerships, the Alumni
Association has established a number of scholarships and also
supports campus activities, academic accomplishments, and
student development.
Annually, the Alumni Association hosts a gala event, the
Alumni Crowning Achievement Awards, which honours
alumni in the following categories: Lifetime Achievement,
Young Alumni, Professional Achievement, Humanitarian and
Community Service, and Outstanding (Volunteer) Service.
Nominations of these awards are processed through the
Alumni Relations office.
The office of Alumni Relations is located in the External
Relations Department and works in partnership with the
Association on joint initiatives which further the positive
reputation of the University of Regina, its alumni, students,
faculty, and staff.
The Alumni board of directors schedules meetings bimonthly, and holds its Annual General Meeting in June. Any
alumnus or alumna interested in becoming a board member
should contact Alumni Relations at uralumni@uregina.ca.
