This prayer was first uttered in 1990. Twenty-two years later ordinary young people have generated an extraordinary $70 + million for soup kitchens, food banks and other charities in communities across the country. The offering on Souper Bowl of Caring today, February 5th, will help support the Food Pantry and Operation Engage. A few lines my friends... to say welcome to Scottish Heritage Sunday, 2012. It will be a great day as we celebrate our rich history as Highland Presbyterian, organized in 1911. The Cape Fear region of the Carolinas was settled by the Scots as early as the late 18th Century. Coming from Scotland in search of a new land and freedom to pursue life, liberty and happiness as well as religious freedom many of them settled in what became Cross Creek and Campbellton landing, later to be Fayetteville. On April 13, 1911, a number of Haymount residents, weary of making the horse-drawn buggy trip one-and-a-quarter miles down unpaved, and sometimes swampy Hay Street to First Presbyterian Church, requested that the Presbytery, meeting in Laurinburg, appoint a commission to inquire into starting a new Presbyterian Church on Haymount Hill. The Commission met on June 5, 1911, in the Graded School Building on Hay Street, and 39 residents of the Haymount neighborhood signed a petition asking that the new church be organized. The church was first called Haymount Presbyterian Church, but the name changed in April of 1912 to Highland Presbyterian to honor the Highland Scots. On Sunday, September 7, 1913, an enthusiastic congregation processed from Graded School (Buieville Academy) to the new church on Hay Street for it’s first church service in that building. At the conclusion of our Scottish Heritage worship we will convene on the front lawn of the church where we will bury the Centennial Time Capsule marking 100 years of faithful service to Christ and His church. This milestone event will properly note this historic event for future generations. It is a joy serving with you in ministry as we enter this second century of service together.
