Title: Career Research Report
Time Requirement: 110 minutes +
(The time for the student to conduct his/her interview; and to complete the draft and final copy of the
Career Research Report has not been included)
Description of the Task:
Using a variety of print and non-print resources and various research strategies, the student will
acquire knowledge of post-secondary education/training requirements connected to his/her
occupational career choice. In addition, the student will gain insight into the duties, competencies,
interests and characteristics associated with this occupation, the knowledge and skills valued by
employers, job prospects and how career development involves changes, transitions and lifelong
learning.

Introduction
The teacher:

introduces the Career Research Report by reviewing the focus of the assignment to gain further insight into their potential career choice and to acquire knowledge
of post-secondary education/training requirements connected to his/her
occupational career choice;

reviews and discusses the components and criteria of the Career Research Report
with the student.
Information Interview
The teacher:

reviews the aspects of the Information Interview and brainstorms with the student
various human resources which may be considered for the interview;
T
brainstorms some examples of interview questions with the student;
T
provides the student with the assessment rubric (Career Research Plan and
Information Interview) and reviews the criteria for assessing the interview
questions.
The student:

individually compiles a list of questions to ask an adult in his/her occupational
career choice which pertain to the criteria for the Career Research Report (Data
Collection Chart and the Detailed Report);

submits the completed list of questions for formative assessment.
The teacher:

refers to the Career Research Report and explains to student that a plan must be
developed in order to outline suitable research possibilities;

brainstorms with the student the various print and non-print sources available as
well as the strategies for researching the information required to complete the
report;

refers student to the assessment rubric (Career Research Plan and Information
Interview) and reviews the criteria for assessing the career research plan;

has student begin to devise a plan for research sources and strategies.

CAREER RESEARCH REPORT
Using a variety of sources such as, interviews, supervisors, guidance counsellors,
employees, career literature, Internet, and computer-related software, you will research
information in your chosen career to be compiled in a report.
The career research report is comprised of the following three components: Information
Interview Summary, Data Collection Chart, and Detailed Report.

INFORMATION INTERVIEW
You are required to make arrangements for an interview with an individual working in
your chosen career in order to gain further insight into the occupation, including how
career development involves changes, transitions and lifelong learning.
The interview will be conducted individually based on a list of questions that you have
compiled prior to the interview. The information gathered during this interview will assist
you in completing the Data Collection Chart and the Detailed Report.
As this individual is considered a source, the name of the individual(s), telephone number
or e-mail address as well as the method of contact must be documented.

The following criteria must be recorded on a spreadsheet, or in a word-processing format
of your choice:

Name of the course or program that offers the educational component of your
potential career choice.
List and provide the contact name and mailing address of three educational
institutions in Canada that offer the educational course, program or training.
Determine the admission requirements for the course, program or training for
each educational institution.
List the diplomas, degrees or certificates of qualification which are granted upon
completion of the program.
Describe the course content and the duration of the course, program or training for
each educational institution.

DETAILED REPORT
The report must be written in essay format and must include the following criteria:

Discuss the attributes that are required for your career choice and how they are
related to your personal competencies, interests, and characteristics;
The knowledge and skills valued by employers;
Review the potential job prospects for the short term (next five years) and the long
term (twenty-five years);
Name and describe at least three other career-related occupations that may occur as
a result of you qualifying for this particular career choice;
Discuss career advancement opportunities over the short and long term of your
potential employment in the career choice which you are investigating;
Describe how changes, transitions and lifelong learning would be a part of this
particular career choice;
Write a job description outlining the duties and responsibilities of a new potential
employee. Include information about working conditions (e.g. shift work, hours,
vacation, salary, benefits, etc.)
