The real story of the 12 days
of Christmas
Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church
AS WE GATHER— “The Real Story of the 12 Days of Christmas”
Who would have thought there was any connection between the song, “The
Twelve Days of Christmas” and a Christian worship service? How could a song
with supposed nonsensical words have anything to do with the birth of Jesus?
But such is truly the case! Sadly, the dust of many, many Christmases has
covered the original meaning of this song, a meaning seated deeply in the
teachings of the Christian Church. The significance of this song carries with it
some startling truths. It includes such teachings as the four Gospels, the five
books of Moses, the eleven apostles, the nine fruits of the spirit, the ten
Commandments, the eight Beatitudes, the six days of creation, and more. Once
we discover that the twelve days of Christmas are in no ways leading up to
Christmas, but instead the twelve days between Christmas and Epiphany, the
symbolism begins to take shape.
+ Introduction +
Processional “O Come Little Children” (Congregation & Children)
West Bloomfield, WI
Children’s Christmas Program
December 24th, 2015
O come little children, O come, one and all,
To Bethlehem haste, to the manger so small
God’s Son for a gift has been sent you this night
To be your Redeemer, your Joy and delight
1
He’s born in a stable for you and for me,
Draw near by the bright-gleaming starlight to see
In swaddling clothes lying so meek and so mild,
And purer than angels-the Heavenly Child.
See Mary and Joseph, with love-beaming eyes
Are gazing upon the rude bed where he lies;
The shepherds are kneeling, with hearts full of love,
While angels sing loud alleluias above.
Kneel down and adore Him with shepherds today
Lift up little hands now and praise Him as they
Rejoice that a Savior from sin you can boast
And join in the song of the heavenly host.
Invocation
Pastor: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, + and of the Holy Spirit.
People: Amen
Pastor’s Introduction
Prayer
Pastor: Dear Savior, once more we thank You that we have had the blessed
privilege of celebrating Your birth, and singing Your praises. May our
hymns, prayers, and all our service find ready acceptance with You. Take up
Your abode in the hearts of the many millions who these holidays are seeking
to glorify Your most holy name. Give us all a deeper, fuller love of You, our
Lord and King, who first loved us and became our Brother by taking on our
human flesh as a little baby born in Bethlehem. To You alone be all the
honor and glory, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns
forever. Amen.

Offering/Prayers/Benediction
Prayers of the Church (Please stand)
Pastor: On this holy night on which Christ was born, let us pray to the Lord
on behalf of His people and for all people in Jesus’ name.
Pastor: Dear Father, in Jesus, You have given us a gift whose worth is
beyond all telling. Help us in the busyness of this holiday season to
not overlook or pass Him by, but rather help us to pause and kneel
quietly before His manger and discover true joy through beholding
Your Son as Christ our Lord. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: Hear our prayer.
Pastor: Dear Father, for all who face this Christmas overwhelmed by loss,
pain, suffering, hunger, or loneliness, we ask Your kindness and the
presence of Your Holy Spirit. In beholding Jesus as the light of the
world, ignite the spark of hope in the hearts of all who are in need.
Lord, in Your mercy,
7
People: Hear our prayer.
Pastor: Dear Father, for Your people around the world who gather this night
in remembrance of Your gift for us in Jesus, we pray Your blessing
and peace. May all who proclaim the good news of Jesus this
Christmas do so with great joy that becomes infectious within all
who hear Your Word. Lord, in Your mercy,
People: Hear our prayer.
Pastor: Dear Father, wherever the good news of the Savior’s birth is
repressed and those who tell it are persecuted, we ask You to turn the
hearts of those responsible, including people in positions of civil
authority. Grant to all earthly leaders humble receptivity and
willingness to carry out Your will for the well-being of all citizens.
Lord, in Your mercy,
People: Hear our prayer.

trusting in Your mercy, through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.

kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give
us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we
forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Benediction
Pastor: The LORD bless you and keep you.
The LORD make His face shine on you and be gracious to you.
The LORD look upon you with favor and  give you peace. Numbers
