Harry Robinson (1900-1990), a respected Okanagan storyteller, produced three
books of stories. One story, "Coyote Makes a Deal with the King of England,"
focuses on the long struggle for justice with respect to unceded Indigenous land
in BC. A famous visit of BC Indigenous leaders to King Edward VII is certainly one inspiration for the story; another is the amendment of the Indian Act
in 1927 to prevent the hiring of lawyers to litigate on cases to do with land.

Musqueam - Community Notice
Phase 2 Environmental Site Assessment
In 2009, a Phase 1 Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) was carried out to
identify if any of our lands may have become contaminated in the past.
Musqueam has hired Teranis Consulting Ltd. to collect soil, sediment and
water samples from our lands where the previous Phase 1 ESA identified the
possibility of contamination. Teranis has a lot of experience working on
similar projects with Nations located throughout the lower Mainland and BC
and will only work on our lands alongside Musqueam members.
This is an important opportunity for our Nation to identify the location of
contamination on our land, so that these issues can be fully assessed and
addressed by Canada in the near future and to protect our children, land and
resources.
Teranis will be collecting a lot of samples throughout Musqueam IR#2 and #4 and will
use a drill rig to collect soil and water samples deep below the ground surface. Teranis
will be working in the following general areas:

Lots that have received soil (Fill) of unknown
quality, such as near the Cultural Pavilion).

The former Muck Bog near Stautlo Ave, Si Lu
Drive and Hum Lu Sum Drive.

Investigating the Highbury Tunnel.

Fraser River, sediment and surface water
sampling.

Former household garbage burning areas.

Houses that previously had heating oil tanks.

Vehicle and boat repair areas.

Duck hunting areas (looking for lead).
Please Note; Teranis will be working throughout
the reserve. Should you have any questions or
concerns about the proposed Phase 2 ESA, if it will
affect your property or if you have any information
regarding other environmental issues on our lands,
please do not hesitate to contact Kim Guerin.
We are also looking for members who are
interested in working with Teranis field personnel
during the Site Investigation. If you have wet
weather clothing and safety boots we would like to
hear from you.
