Making a Difference
I had the opportunity
This year, I had the opportunity to serve as a
mentor for one of the Youth Leadership Task
Groups. Working with the high school students
provided me with a unique insight to the Youth
program and I was energized by their passion and
enthusiasm.
to go through Leadership South Bend / Mishawaka
in 2003 and to this day, it has been one of the
best things I have done both personally and
professionally. I continue to build on my
experience as a member of the board of directors
and alumni association.
Amy Hill, Class 29

Amy Hill. Amy is Director of Marketing and Community
Partnerships for the South Bend Silver Hawks.
Looking Back. Looking Forward.
Each adult and youth
class brings fresh enthusiasm, new insights, and their
own unique perspective to discussions about the
strengths, challenges and opportunities that exist in our
community. The 2009-10 classes were no exception
and the enthusiasm generated carried forward into a
very eventful and fruitful year!

In October we celebrated 35 years of Leadership
South Bend/Mishawaka with an anniversary luncheon
at the Palais Royale attended by over 225 people. We
also launched our first new executive community
orientation program and are looking forward to the next
session that will be held on April 19 and 26, 2011.

Continuing the momentum, in late March, the first
phase of the Community Leadership Program Impact
Study conducted by Walden University was launched.
The first phase included an online survey to alumni.
The second phase includes a more in-depth survey to
recent graduates of the program and focus groups of
alumni and community stakeholders. This study will
greatly improve our ability to measure and quantify the
overall impact of Leadership South Bend/Mishawaka
on our community. A special thank you to all who
participated in Phase One of the study.
This past year was truly incredible and I look forward
to watching our graduates hone in on their passions
and make a difference in their life and the lives of
others in our community!

Challenge
Leadership Day
During one of the most popular youth program days, Chuck Roach, of Challenge Leadership - Indianapolis, spends the day
putting Youth Leadership participants through a variety of fast paced, and challenging high energy activities.
Students are
required as a group,
to raise the Hoola
Hoop from the floor
to over their heads
without it falling,
using only 2 fingers!
Each team uses
materials to build
a bridge strong
enough to get the
truck over the bridge
without collapsing!

Arts & Culture
The Arts and Culture project group held an Art Show at the
Century Center to showcase the art from four local high
schools. Over 100 pieces of student art were featured. A silent
auction and bake sale raised $300 which was donated to Arts
Everywhere in support of area school art programs.
Diverse Neighborhoods
Partnering with the Near Northwest Neighborhood Association,
this team helped residents prepare the neighborhood gardens
for spring. They also cleared away litter along Portage Avenue.
Education
The team conducted a book drive which yielded twenty boxes of
books. The books were then donated to The Center for Homeless,
El Campito, Books & Blankets and Xavier School of Excellence.
Environment
Potawatomi Park was the recipient of this team’s work in
cleaning the park for the summer season.
Quality of Life
This team focused on donations for St. Vincent de Paul. The
group “stuffed a truck” with the clothing and food items they
collected. A total of 400 pounds of donations were collected.
