G.W. HEWLETT HIGH SCHOOL

Dear Parent/Guardian:
Transitioning from high school to college is challenging for most anyone, but for a student with a
learning disability it can be far more so. Below are a few important points that can help you
approach this very important transition period.
1. If your child has been receiving helpful support services during high school (i.e., resource
room, ICT instruction or test modifications), it is important that you seek to these similar
supports while in college.
2. It is important that your child brings all education related documentation (i.e., IEP, updated
psychological) with you when visiting prospective colleges. You will see that depending on
your child’s needs, some schools may be better choices than others for their continued
education.
3. YOU CHILD MUST BE HIS/HER OWN ADVOCATE! If test modifications are needed, it is
important to bring this information to the attention each professor.
While little is offered without asking, many colleges have extensive programs designed for students
with learning disabilities. But, remember that these programs are as different as the colleges
themselves. With this in mind, it is imperative that you visit these programs (schools) and interview
them as to the make-up of the learning disability program. You may find that a particular college’s
program caters to the specific needs of your child more so than that of another school. Additionally,
some schools charge for these extra services (i.e., Adelphi), while others, such as Nassau
Community College, offer free support service programs.
4. Do not forget to sign release forms to have a ACCESS case opened for your child prior to
their starting college. ACCESS offers free vocational counseling for individuals with special
needs to assist them in accomplishing their career goals.
Included in this booklet are colleges across the country with services and programs for students
with disabilities. It is important to know that colleges vary with accommodations for students with
disabilities. Structure programs offer comprehensive support. Also included are a series of
articles and documents that offer information concerning a number a college programs designed
for students with special needs. In addition, Naviance, the Internet, the school and HewlettWoodmere Libraries are also valuable resources to help identify the “right” college to meet specific
your needs.
The choices are many, the opportunities are limitless, and the success you can reach is within your
grasp as long as you prepare. If you have any questions concerning the transition from high school
to college, please contact your guidance counselor.
Sincerely,
Elizabth Ruiz-Quintana
