OPTIONS FOR INDEPENDENCE JOB DESCRIPTION INDEPENDENT LIVING COORDINATOR FOR OLDER PEOPLE WITH VISUAL DISABILITIES JOB CONDITIONS LOCATION: WORK AREA: TIME: SALARY: Headquartered in Logan, Utah Box Elder, Cache and Rich Counties 40 hours a week (1.00 FTE) $22,000 per year plus 27% benefits RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Offers independent living skills training, peer support, and individual and systems advocacy to people 55 and older with visual disabilities. 2. Leads advocacy activities to remove barriers. 3. Provides information and referral on blindness and low vision. 4. Assists with Assistive Technology services including need assessment, funding acquisition, usage training and follow-up. 5. Assists with modifications of living areas to increase independence. 6. Counsels people and their families in disability rights and adapting to visual disabilities. 7. Organizes and facilitates support groups. 8. Acquaints people with other community resources. 9. Maintains records and compiles progress reports. 10. Travels throughout the service area. 11. Performs other related duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS 1. Bachelor’s Degree in a related field or four years of directly related work experience. 2. Excellent interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to relate well to a broad spectrum of people particularly older people. 3. Excellent communication skills (oral & written). 4. Knowledge of and experience with basic computer programs, i.e., Word, Word Perfect, Internet & email. 5. Knowledge of and experience with keeping records, i.e., data collection, analysis, interpretation and reporting. 6. Ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision. 7. Knowledge of and commitment to Independent Living Philosophy and concepts is preferred. 8. Willingness and ability to use own transportation for work related duties as needed (with reimbursement). 9. Willing to submit to a background check. 10. Willing to attend low vision training in Salt Lake City for a full week, preferably staying overnight with expenses paid. 11. Personal experience with a disability preferred.
