WHEN SHOULD I ARRIVE AT UNT?
Students are advised to get airline reservations far in advance to avoid difficulties. We especially
recommend direct flights from the home country to Dallas/Ft. Worth International Airport (DFW), as
there are fewer problems with delays, etc. For British students, direct flights are available from
London/Gatwick, but good connections through Chicago are also available from Glasgow and
Manchester. French students may wish to come direct from Paris. German students can fly direct
from Frankfurt. Japanese students can come direct from Tokyo. We do recommend that students
avoid flights that go through New York City/JFK International before coming to Dallas because of
frequent delays and problems.
Arrival days are Saturday, August 22 and Sunday, August 23, at Dallas/Ft. Worth Airport. Please
arrange if possible to arrive on Sunday. Students arriving on Saturday and Sunday between
10:00AM and 9:00 PM will be met at baggage claim and taken to UNT. If you wish to be picked up
on Saturday or Sunday, please notify the Center for Global Learning with the enclosed Airport
Pickup Form by August 7, 2009 by mail, telephone or fax.
Students should not arrive before Saturday as the residence halls do not open until Sunday. If you do
arrive before Saturday, you should contact the Airport Shuttle at (940) 565-9936 one week in advance
of arrival. Give the shuttle the following information: airline, flight number, and time of arrival. The
shuttle will notify you of the pickup locations at the D/FW Airport. The approximate cost is $60 in
cash (U.S. dollars) to the shuttle driver for the trip to the UNT campus. Taxi fare from D/FW is about
$50-$70!!
UNT halls open in the Fall on Sunday at 10:00am, & in the Spring on Wednesday at 2:00pm.
Students arriving before the dorms open should also plan to stay in a local hotel until the residence
halls open. The Royal Hotel Suites (940) 383-2007 is close to campus and charges about $45 (plus
tax) for a room.
2
Students must not arrive after Orientation Week has started.
WHAT KIND OF VISA WILL I HAVE?
Exchange students come to UNT on F-1 (student) visas that are issued by the U.S. Government.
The UNT International Student and Scholar Office processes the necessary forms and prints the I-20
forms which are used to apply for the F-1 at the U.S. Embassy in the home country. In this packet
are the application form and Certification of Financial Resources form. Both forms must be sent
back to us in order for the I-20 to be issued. It will be sent to you about two weeks from the date we
receive these forms. After processing by the U.S. Embassy in your country, the I-20 must be taken
along with the F-1 visa to be presented upon arrival in the U.S. Immigration officials will stamp the F1 visa in your passport upon entry in the U.S.
The Certification of Finances form verifies your financial ability to study and support yourself while at
UNT. It should be filled in by you, your parents or anyone else who is paying for your study, and
signed and stamped by your bank. Included are both one semester and two semester forms.
Please fill out the one appropriate for your study period, as the money requirements are different.
*Please note that ISEP students obtain their visas directly from ISEP and should follow the
procedures outlined by ISEP.
British students who would like to use local authority grant letters to partially satisfy this financial
requirement are welcome to submit an official copy of that grant letter.
WHAT KIND OF ORIENTATION WILL I RECEIVE?
The exchange student orientation will begin at 9:00 A.M. on Monday in the Fall & on Thursday at 9:00
A.M. in the Spring. During this time, we will give you a tour of the campus and Denton, take you
shopping, help you open a bank account, get a long-distance telephone card, a post office box (about
$45 per semester; a post office box is mandatory for all students living in the dorm), a student ID card,
and complete your registration for classes and sort out any problems that may occur. This orientation
is very important for all exchange students!
WHERE CAN I SEND MAIL/PACKAGES/LUGGAGE?
You may initially send all mail and small packages to the above mailing address of the Center for
Global Learning. After you rent a post office box, you can receive mail in your own name. For
delivery of large packages or luggage you wish to ship in advance, use our street address. Students
usually carry all the luggage they need and buy items here as needed.
HOW SHOULD I BRING MONEY TO TEXAS?
For students paying their accommodations directly at UNT, we recommend at least $1000 in U.S.
dollar travelers checks, as they can be replaced if lost or stolen and can be used immediately upon
arrival to pay for housing, food, and personal expenses. The remainder of funds should be brought in
a bank draft or check payable to yourself. This bank draft can be deposited when opening a bank
account in Denton. Note that funds cannot be withdrawn from a new account made with a bank draft
for two to four weeks.
3
You will be able to choose a savings account or a checking account and get an ATM (automated
teller machine) withdrawal card. The Wells Fargo Bank of Denton has a branch in the Student Union
Building.
WHERE WILL I LIVE AT UNT? WHO WILL I LIVE WITH?
Exchange students are strongly advised to live in residence halls during the entire period of their
study at UNT. All students can be accommodated in the halls, and usually in those reserved for third
and fourth year students. All rooms are air-conditioned and double-occupancy, and are equipped
with twin beds, closets, desks, and telephones. Most rooms also have in-room sinks and cable TV
hookups. Some rooms share a private lavatory and shower with the adjacent room and some have
communal lavatories and showers on the wing.
We recommend these choices of halls, due to their central location: Crumley, Kerr, Maple, Bruce.
Please note that the UNT Housing Contract is a legal document, and once you sign it, you are
committing yourself to live in the UNT halls for the selected period: Fall and Spring semesters or
Spring or Fall semester only.
Students making payments at UNT for accommodations are asked to make payments according to
the schedule published by the Housing Office. Deadline dates and amounts will be discussed during
an orientation session.
Your roommate will be another UNT student, likely a student from Texas! You will not be placed with
a student who smokes unless you indicate your willingness on the housing contract. U.S. students
typically furnish their rooms with televisions and refrigerators, and occasionally with microwave ovens
and telephone answering machines. Most UNT students also have cars for trips home or to Dallas
for weekend fun.
Upon arrival, each exchange student may borrow from the CLE a pillow, pillow case, top and bottom
sheets to fit the residence hall beds and a blanket and towels. A shopping trip is arranged during the
first few days after students arrive.
Exchange students are permitted to live off-campus in the neighborhoods adjacent to campus, but it
is extremely difficult to find such private housing before the Fall or Spring semesters begin. In
addition, off-campus living can be significantly more expensive since students will have to provide
deposits for electricity and other municipal services, for telephone usage and other start-up costs,
and may need to purchase or lease a car, which would make life off campus even more expensive!
If a student decides to live off-campus rather than in a residence halls, he or she must notify the GLE
of that decision and plan to come to Denton up to one week earlier in order to search for the desired
accommodations. GLE personnel are unable to assist the student in this search or in any
negotiations with the leasing agent or owner of private accommodations.
WHAT ABOUT MEALS?
Living on campus requires you to purchase a meal plan, as you sign one contract for room and board.
You may select a 5-day (Monday-Friday) or 7-day (Monday-Sunday dinner) meal plan. The only
exception is at College Inn, where most rooms are self-catering. Please note that College Inn is on a
4
far edge of campus!
Cafeterias are located in Bruce, Clark, Kerr, Maple, Victory, and West Halls. Vegetarian fare is
available in Bruce Cafeteria.
Having paid for a meal plan, you may choose from any of the cafeterias and may have all you care to
eat.
WILL I BE ABLE TO MAKE LONG-DISTANCE TELEPHONE CALLS FROM MY ROOM?
Students will be able to make long-distance calls from their rooms as soon as they obtain a calling
card from one of the long-distance carriers. Students can apply during orientation week from the
Center for Global Learning or from many offers on campus in the first week. Local calls are free from
the phones in dorm rooms. There are also many pay telephones located around campus.
WHICH CLASSES WILL I BE ABLE TO TAKE AT UNT?
You are welcome to choose a full schedule of courses from the UNT catalog and the appropriate
semester’s Schedule of Classes, available at the exchange/study abroad office at your university and
on the UNT WWW page. Students usually take 12-18 credit hours per semester. Enrollment in a
minimum of 12 hours (usually four classes per semester) is a visa requirement. Most classes are 3credit, although some areas of study have 1, 2, or 4-credit classes. You should email or fax the UNT
Study Abroad Advisor a list of UNT classes selected in conjunction with your home institution
academic advisor for the semesters which you plan to attend, and we will attempt to place you in
each of the classes you request.
The Ctr. for Global Learning will set up advising sessions for all in-coming exchange students with
the various departmental advisors and register you for classes from our office. Your grades will be
reported to our office and then forwarded to your home university.
HOW MUCH WILL TEXTBOOKS AND STUDY MATERIALS COST?
UNT estimates that an average student spends approximately $800 on textbooks and study materials
each academic year. Although some textbooks are in the library, most must be purchased. Used
textbooks are available for purchase at the university bookstores, but they tend to sell out rather
quickly. Textbooks can be sold back to the bookstores for a percentage of the price paid.
WHAT SHOULD I WEAR AT UNT?
Plan on wearing very light clothing upon arrival in Texas during August. The summer daily
temperature is usually between 95 and 100 Fahrenheit (35-38 Celsius)! Most students wear shorts,
t-shirts, sandals, and sunglasses during the hot days. Good walking shoes are a must as you will
walk a lot on campus. The autumn months are warm, but cooler in October and November.
December through March is colder and you will need warm clothing (sweaters, coats, etc.). It warms
up again in the spring months and is in the 80s and 90s by May.
SHOULD I PLAN TO TRAVEL DURING HOLIDAYS?
5
Absolutely! Texas is centrally located in the United States, so students often travel to the East or
West coasts (or both) during their stay at UNT. Students frequently enjoy Spring Break on the Texas
Riviera at Padre Island on the Gulf of Mexico. Some students even return home during the holidays.
There is a travel agency in the Student Union that can help you plan any trips you wish to take.
Students often stay with roommates or friends over holidays as well.
WHAT ABOUT HEALTH INSURANCE?
Exchange students must either bring health insurance coverage with them, or purchase the UNT
health insurance policy. If you plan to bring your own insurance, be sure to bring a detailed
description of the policy so that you will receive a waiver from the UNT health insurance requirement.
Students without insurance (or students without a detailed description of their home-country policy)
will be required to buy the UNT insurance for $1300 for an academic year (semester plans are also
available for around $700). ISEP students obtain their insurance form ISEP and simply need to show
receipt of payment for this coverage upon arrival.
The coverage level of UNT insurance is the absolute minimum anyone should have! It provides for a
total of a $10,000 payout per injury, illness, etc. To receive a waiver from the UNT requirement, you
must demonstrate that your policy has a payout of at least $10,000.
Most of your medical needs will be taken care of at the UNT Student Health Center. Students can be
examined by a doctor for no charge, although some procedures (X-rays, some tests, drug
prescriptions and subsequent visits) do carry a charge. UNT insurance requires that all students
needing referral to other medical services receive that referral at the Student Health Center.
Additional information will be provided during Orientation.
WILL I BE ABLE TO WORK IN TEXAS DURING MY STAY?
You are permitted to work on the UNT campus during your stay at UNT. Working off campus is
forbidden by the U.S. Government! Campus jobs include office and cafeteria work, sometimes
even a bit of tutoring! Office jobs typically require typing which you can learn here at UNT during your
stay! Interested students should visit the Student Employment Office in the Student Union during
Orientation Week. (Campus jobs pay about $5-6 per hour, and you are permitted to work up to 20
hours per week.)
Services Provided to International Exchange Students
6
The UNT Ctr. for Global Learning & Experience (GLE) provides specialized assistance to all international exchange
students in keeping with UNT's strong commitment to international education and its institutional partners abroad.
Exchange students receive a special Orientation Program which includes personalized settling-in assistance and academic
advising and counseling.
Personalized Settling-In Assistance
GLE staff provides transportation to campus from the Dallas/Ft.Worth International Airport for all in-coming exchange
students on the scheduled arrival date by appointment.
The GLE assists the exchange student in moving into reserved campus dormitory accommodation, in acquiring a bank
account, UNT identification card, post office box, Social Security card, long-distance telephone credit card, and work
permission on the UNT campus. Students are assisted in making informed decisions concerning the purchase of required
health/accident insurance. Shopping trips are arranged during the Orientation Program.
The GLE distributes all mail received for the student, and serves as a temporary mailing address for newly arrived
students. A student is telephoned whenever a faxed message arrives. Transportation is provided in emergency situations
at any time during the student's stay at UNT.
The Director and staff maintain contact with the home institution to ensure that the needs of the institution and the student
are being met. The GLE welcomes telephone calls, faxed letters, email messages, and personal visits to the campus by
home-institution faculty and administrators.
Academic Advising and Personal Counseling
The Assistant Director of the Center for Global Learning personally advises the exchange student during his or her stay at
UNT. This advisement includes general academic requirements and routine, course selection and placement, textbook
purchase, computer and electronic mail access, visa status, campus employment, etc.
Each student also meets with an academic advisor in the major department. If a question arises as to the selection of
courses, the student is assisted in contacting the home department to decide appropriate courses.
At the end of each semester, the Assistant Director collects and records the course grades, and reports them both to the
home institution and the student. The final grade report is the formal report of the student's academic efforts and results.

Exchange Benefits: Housing, Meals, and Holiday Accommodations
International exchange students may stay in campus dormitories in double-occupancy rooms, or in off-campus lodgings by their own arrangement,
except for ISEP students. Dormitory students share bathroom facilities with students in an adjoining room, or with students in a larger facility on the
same dormitory floor. Meals are provided in dormitory cafeterias on an "all you care to eat" basis. (Individual cooking facilities are available only
in the College Inn dormitory.) Students may bring their own linen, or purchase new bed sheets, pillow and pillowcase from the GLE. Towels are
not provided and must be brought from home or purchased separately by the student. Coin-operated laundry facilities are available in each
dormitory.
Under most exchange agreements, the exchange student pays his/her own UNT meal costs for either the 5 day (15-meal) or 7 day (20-meal without
Sunday supper) cafeteria plan at a cost of approximately $2932 (for the 5 day plan) or $3110, (for the 7 day plan) per semester for both room and
board.
Campus dormitories are closed for four days during the fall semester at Thanksgiving, for three weeks at Christmas and New Year's, and for one
week at Spring Break in mid-March. (Two dormitories will remain open during these holiday periods, but cafeteria service is not available.)
Some exchange agreements include the exchange of meal and holiday accommodation benefits.
Students choosing to live in off-campus lodgings must arrive early in Denton to make the necessary arrangements. The "start-up costs" of offcampus living are significant and should be carefully considered.
Estimated Annual Personal Expenses
UNT estimates that an exchange student should expect to spend at least $1300 for personal expenses, and $1000 for books, study materials and
supplies during an exchange year of two semesters at UNT.
Additional funds will be required to travel around the United States during vacation periods. Students are eligible to work up to 20 hours per week
(at approximately $5-6 per hour) on campus during the exchange period.
