About us:
Word Up! were the first learning disability newspaper in the UK and the only
newspaper owned and controlled by disabled people. Word Up! is a volunteer led
project and keeps striving towards their aim, to be a leading disability charity in
Wandsworth.
We are now expanding through going online and the new interactive website will be
a new platform to reach a wider audience and represent a wider spectrum of people.
Empowering individuals with learning difficulties, in Wandsworth and beyond to have
a voice, and speak up about things that concern them.
The new online news site can be used as a tool to help people with learning
difficulties to learn or become more confident in using the internet and interact with
others, through training and sharing experiences with their peers.
This role would be suitable for someone who shares the same values of
empowerment and respect for vulnerable adults, particularly with learning difficulties
and disabilities. You will be sensitive to the online needs of people with learning
difficulties and disabilities.
Role Description:
We have an immediate need for a Project Co-ordinator to assist the Word Up! team.
You will need to have good communication skills and the ability to organise and host
meetings, take notes when required and ensure that any actions set are met. You
will also be responsible for co-ordinating stories for the website, checking emails,
sending and replying to emails.
Skills required:
A genuine interest and awareness of working with people with learning difficulties
and disabilities. Good communication and planning skills to ensure the project is
clearly co-ordinated and deadlines that are set and met.
Duration: Ongoing, but a minimum of 3 months commitment.

Main Duties:












Excellent communication, writing and organisational skills.
Support people with learning disabilities to write up stories, edit articles for the
website.
Responsibility for setting up meetings, preparing agenda’s and note taking
when required.
Type up minutes and add pictures. Email notes and send via post to the
editorial team.
Liaise with website volunteer to ensure online news and articles are uploaded
on set deadlines.
Source and arrange IT training for volunteers.
Update and maintain volunteer and members database.
Build links with other organisations and increase membership of Friends of
Word Up!
Organise fundraising events, book venue and invite guests.
Ability to prioritise work to meet deadlines and organise own work load
efficiently.
Given the nature of the individuals you will be working with, this role requires
complete commitment to the project.
Undertake any other tasks that may be required.
Please note that this is an unpaid position. The volunteer must be available to
volunteer for a minimum of 1 day per week; although this position is unpaid we offer
excellent references upon the successful completion of your assignment.
