What is Crime Prevention

• Crime Prevention is the technique of reducing or eliminating opportunities for crime.

• It is easy to learn and to apply .

• It can be your second nature .

Police takes a proactive approach towards crime prevention.

Rationale: prevention is always better than cure .

Crime is preventable as many crimes are opportunistic in nature and attributable to victim’s negligence or carelessness.

Police cannot prevent crime alone. Therefore the community has the shared responsibility of crime prevention.

 Acts as a government official or salesman to gain entry into homes

 Confronting victims who are about to enter or leave home

 Enter or force in through unsecured doors or other entrance

 Keep the grille gates locked at all times

 Never open the door to strangers

 Identify visitors through the door viewer

 Keep the chain latch of the door fastened when talking to the visitor

 Check the stranger’s particulars

 Call the Police if in doubt call “999”

HOW IT HAPPENS

‰ Loitering at lift landings to ambush the victim.

‰ Using distraction methods of

‰ Accusing victims of staring, causing annoyance, or starting a quarrel.

‰ claiming to be a relative or friend before bringing them to a secluded place to rob them of their valuables.

‰ Asking for road directions, time, assistance, and taking the opportunity to rob you.

‰ Directing your attention to stains or dirt

(such as ketchup or ice-cream stains) on your clothes and taking the opportunity to rob you.

‰ Plan your route and avoid dark and deserted places.

‰ Be wary of strangers following you or loitering at the lift landing and void decks.

‰ Avoid taking the lift with any suspicious stranger. Arrange for someone to escort you when returning home late.

‰ When taking the lift alone, stand beside the lift control panel.

Press the “DOOR OPEN” button to exit if any stranger rushes in.

‰ Avoid wearing excessive jewellery or carrying large amounts of cash.

‰ If confronted, surrender your valuables on demand one at a time and try to remember any distinct features of the culprit.

~ Stand close to the button panel. Press “DO” when a stranger rushes in as the door is closing and step out immediately.

~ Let the stranger take the lift and you wait for the next one

~ Do not nap or sleep when using public transport

~ Alert other passengers or seek help from driver if you are disturbed by someone
