The United States), T-chart transparency, ISN, Final Draft paper for RAFT Hook: With a partner brainstorm and record any differences you can think of between the northern and southern colonies/states? Line: (T-chart drawn here and information recorded.) Sinker: Rough Draft of RAFT Instructions: 1. Students will need their ISN and a writing utensil to start. 2. Students should be set-up in partners. 3. Have students brainstorm and record the “Hook” question with their partner and record their information in their ISN. (4 min.) 4. Debrief possible answers with students and clarify when necessary. 5. Show the T-chart transparency on the overhead and have students copy it down on the “Line” side of their spiral. 6. Show Transparency 13B and have students use the picture to complete the first category of the T-chart. (More information can be found on p. 174-175 of the History Alive! The United States textbook and p. 359371 of their History of the United States textbook.) 7. Repeat the process with Transparency 13E “Society” (HA! text p. 184-185), Transparency 13D “Transportation” (HA! text p. 180-181), and Transparency 13C “Economy” (HA! text p. 176-178). 8. Debrief with the T-chart transparency and fill in important information that the students need to have. Have the students write down any information that they missed onto their chart. Use Transparency 13A as an overall summary transparency. 9. Have students work individually to complete the following R.A.F.T. The “Sinker” will be their Rough Draft of the R.A. F.T. R=An immigrant looking for a good life for himself and his family A=Family back in Europe F=Letter T=Convince your European family that you have chosen the best place to settle (North OR South) Responses should support a position based on the information in the chart.
